The prospects of a next-gen RX-7 has been the subject of so many rumours since production of the iconic Mazda model ceased in 2002, that you have to take every new ‘report’ with a grain of salt. But if there was ever a time to get properly excited about a future Mazda sports car, it’s on the back of the Japanese automaker’s announcement of a new concept to be shown at the Tokyo Motor Show in 30 days time.
What do we know for sure? Well, apart from the teaser image above, not a whole lot. But this excerpt from Mazda’s press release does sound promising: “The design of the sports car concept to be unveiled in Tokyo is modern but maintains a sense of lineage and authenticity, appearing almost to condense Mazda’s entire history of sports car development into a single model.”
There’s no mention of what engine might power the concept, but with Mazda confirming that a classic rotary Cosmo Sport 110S – a model than turns 50 in 2017 by the way – will be on display, it’s hard not to get just a little bit excited…

That concept photo is beautiful.
Sounds way too good to be true. It looks like they borrowed a lot of the styling from the Furai.
When they come out with a new rotary coupe, I'm first in line to the dealership

Wow, they are building the anticipation about this. They just might be serious.
With the cosmo on hand, I REALLY hope that we get something awesome by way of a 2dr grand tourer with rwd or awd. I don't even care if it's rotary or not
I imagine the unveiling will be far better than the North American debut of the ND.

Did they say anythimg about the engine? Only that it's named SkyActiv-R and it's rotary. Anything more specific?
