My friend went from a 91' Miata
To a 89 Firebird
Miata was gutted, exhaust, tuned, & sound system. Firebird is stock with a 5.7L v8
Do you think it was a good even trade?

lol...you're on a Miata forum. Do you expect to get a non-biased response?
Honesty, its whatever makes him happy. Life's too short to drive a car you hate.

We all would have kept the Miata
Was it worth the thread?

Dear god no lol. Well I guess it looks manlier but I cant imagine it'll be anywere near as fun. I'd choose the miata anyday hands down.
We're here for a good time, not for a long time.

Looking at the condition just from those pics and not focusing on car bias...good trade.
You may say it's less fun...I'd say it can be just as much fun, but for different reasons. Big engine = big sound and fun in the straights. It's the muscle-car feel.
BUT I still think a Miata is better
And honestly, a Firebird may help a young kid to score some pootang. And frankly that's what life is all about!

It all depends... resale on a gutted car / modified car is going to be difficult at best since its going to be fairly niche. The Firebird has good paint and appears to be in stock condition. If he were trying to sell both, he'd likely have an easier time selling a stock Firebird over a modified miata. (My miata was "modified" by the PO. I'm still removing stuff.) From that end, and that end alone, it was a good trade on his part.
2012: Purchased Miata, Laid off 3 days later. 4th place overall (default!), NWOR SCCA (RTR)
2013: Budget RTR build, massive increase in participation, 3rd place overall, NWOR SCCA (RTR)
2014: Suspension and more active competition in STS. 3rd place overall, NWOR SCCA
2015: Time for some "form" and vintage styling (while still racing NWOR, of course).

Wouldn't say it was a bad trade, I wouldn't have done it... But to each his own. As long as your happy with it, it was a good trade.
BTW: Do you know what happened to the hood of the Firebird?
The back corners of a hood being lifted up like that are usually indicative that it's been forced to far open before. Possibly it got caught by the wind or maybe someone thought they could open it vertically? I don't see how you would bend those fat hood hinges they have though.
