Well,

Here she is. One owner with every document of the Montego Blue's history. He has owned it for 21 years and it is in great shape. [Extremely minor things here and there that couldn't hurt the sale]

Was purchased in Bay City, Michigan. Yes, I checked for rust. Non. This was a garage queen and was well maintained as I glanced over many receipts rubberbanded together. Its been in Florida for over 10 years now and worked on by Lowes Automotive in Sarasota who specializes in Rotaries and Rx7s.

Without Further Adieu,

I am really hoping we will get a build thread for this rare bird? This has always been one of my personal dream cars growing up.

Pettit Racing down in Ft. Lauderdale, FL was a one of the big promoters of the RX-7 back when these cars came out, anything from mild to wild, maybe pay them a visit?

I will definitely be using their services in the future for any rebuilds and installations. Jeanne and I want to keep it super clean and close to a stock look without hurting the value of the car when it becomes a classic with tasteful mods. I'd love to have a real 99 speed bumper and taillights but we'll see what we can do because she said no to the spoiler already.

I just performed a fluid change for the transmission and the differential with 2.5 quarts of royal purple 75w90 in the transmissionand 1.5 in the diff.

I had documents that it was changed at 93k and the car is at 126k. The transmission fluid look clean. It might even have been done last year I'm not sure. The receipt though that I have shows 2005 is when it was performed at 93k. The differential however looks like it was never changed. It was murky unlike the transmission. All the nuts came off easy with pb blaster, wire brushing around the bolt, and tapping the 1/2 inch drive 24 mm socket with a rubber mallet. Only bolt to give me a sweat was the fill plug in the transmission. But still I was successful.

Car feels amazing now. Wow. I love gear oil.

so while i was doing the fluid change i found out that the car has a megan racing downpipe to reduce the heat soak caused by the oem catalytic converter. I also found out that the differential fluid was changed at the same time as the transmission gear oil was performed. I went through the records and confirmed.

I installed two new Mazda belts. Sucked because I did it all on no knowledge. In doing so I did break a bolt head off the airpump which we tried to extract. Made a new tap and the new bolt pattern wouldn't fit through the bracket underneath the airpump. So I said fuck it. I'll get one at pettit racing for cheap.

Not so much, it cost 100 but it was a low mileage pump. I could have deleted the pump but I'd rather do so with a powerfc so the car runs better if I did a delete without the powerfc. Anyways I got everything together and it's running perfect. I also installed a new mazda fuel filter.

Tomorrow the aluminum air separator tank will go in with a new from mazda center console bezel.

I have contributed my first "How to Thread" on a shifter rebuild.

This is what I performed this morning"

This morning I gathered the parts to rebuild the shifter top to bottom.

https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2950/15378210726_85ee363c14_c.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/pqVmhf)20140930_074513 (https://flic.kr/p/pqVmhf) by rocketeerbandit (https://www.flickr.com/people/63839450@N02/), on Flickr

I started by removing the Center Console Bezel and un-clipping the connectors to the fog lights, defroster, bulb to the ashtray etc.

There are 4 10 mm bolts for the upper dust boot.

https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2949/15214715437_96c51e5324_c.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/pbtoPX)20140930_071956 (https://flic.kr/p/pbtoPX) by rocketeerbandit (https://www.flickr.com/people/63839450@N02/), on Flickr

One of the reason why I am rebuilding the shifter is because I know how 21 years is on rubber. Especially brittle mazdas' shifts boots from my previous ownership of a 99 miata. They are very similar in design and parts. So this rebuild is very familiar to me.

https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3889/15398045961_f31690f833_c.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/psF1B4)20140930_072301 (https://flic.kr/p/psF1B4) by rocketeerbandit (https://www.flickr.com/people/63839450@N02/), on Flickr

After removing the upper boot, you can see the lower boot torn as well being held in place with 3 10mm bolts.

https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2946/15214574130_3d09964455_c.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/pbsEPC)20140930_072405 (https://flic.kr/p/pbsEPC) by rocketeerbandit (https://www.flickr.com/people/63839450@N02/), on Flickr

In the file folder of receipts that I inherited with the purchase of my rx7 last month from the one owner who saved everything, I saw that the bushings were replaced a while back but still wanted to do the job myself to have that security of knowing it is new and done in my ownership of the vehicle.

https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2946/15398048961_de95b468e2_c.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/psF2uM)20140930_072944 (https://flic.kr/p/psF2uM) by rocketeerbandit (https://www.flickr.com/people/63839450@N02/), on Flickr

The Paper Gasket that is married to the lower dust boot from factory is now stuck on the turret. I had to scrape it off carefully

https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2944/15400907962_e27374418e_c.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/psVFnU)20140930_073058 (https://flic.kr/p/psVFnU) by rocketeerbandit (https://www.flickr.com/people/63839450@N02/), on Flickr

Down in the turret you can see a bushing and underneath that is a spring washer. To get this out I need to use a hammer and a socket extension that fit perfectly to nudge that pin back.

replace the broken spring washer on the bottom of the lip first then the bushing. The cutout of the bushing should be facing where the pin will be reinserted. I used a crowbar to push the pin back in. This was the only part that I felt need attention.

https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2941/15214722897_8ff35a5235_c.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/pbtr3z)20140930_073811 (https://flic.kr/p/pbtr3z) by rocketeerbandit (https://www.flickr.com/people/63839450@N02/), on Flickr

When I removed the bushing the flex washer was broken so be careful not letting the fragmented parts fall in the turret. This is what I pulled out

https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3927/15401237595_7c0b0e0177_c.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/psXnne)20140930_074159 (https://flic.kr/p/psXnne) by rocketeerbandit (https://www.flickr.com/people/63839450@N02/), on Flickr

I reassembled the shifter with new parts and very mildly lubed the shifter to slide the lower dust boot over. Prior to doing so make sure the new bushing and clamp flexed washer is connected. You can see indention on the bushing where the washer clamps over. Be gently not to bend the clamps. The was faces up.

I put 4oz. of transmission fluid in the turret.

https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3853/15401240625_52cbb7566d_c.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/psXogt)20140930_080925 (https://flic.kr/p/psXogt) by rocketeerbandit (https://www.flickr.com/people/63839450@N02/), on Flickr

Now we need to make sure the bushing that we inserted on the side of the shifter ball is facing that Pin we talked about earlier. I used a rubber mallet to tap the shifter back in place with the bottom bushing inserting into the turret. Again, gentle.

I slipped the upper boot over the shifter with some lube so it was easy to slide over and tightend the nuts done in a star formation.

https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2946/15214645728_6796c45b4b_c.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/pbt375)20140930_082529 (https://flic.kr/p/pbt375) by rocketeerbandit (https://www.flickr.com/people/63839450@N02/), on Flickr

The top boot I received goes over the shifter and has a lip to go over the dust boot/middle boot and fits perfect

https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2946/15214730107_8fb7011ed5_c.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/pbttbT)20140930_082657 (https://flic.kr/p/pbttbT) by rocketeerbandit (https://www.flickr.com/people/63839450@N02/), on Flickr

Place the new heat shield over the shifter like so and reassemble the connectors to the center console and were done.

Thanks. The miata really prepared me for this car.

Next up will be installing a new ac meter bezel. There were only 5 in the states. I didn't want to miss out. That I believe will come tomorrow.

After that, I'll be ordering new door cups and trim on the tan door card. I'm also thinking of buying those cards new too because on my current panels, the mounts for the plastic to screw into are broken. Just depends how much they are.

I'm a little upset that the B-spec kit shine auto makes uses fender flares. I really liked the clean look until I found that out. So the 99 spec is the decision as of now.

So a few things:

Kept checking my oil levels and the oil gauge on the cluster was acting sporadic. Oil wwas decreasing but I wasn't seeing much on the ground where I parked. Just a drip. So I called Lowes automotive and brought the car in where the motor was completely rebuilt by the shop.*

Come to find out, the oil send get unit seal was leaking and it was replaced under there warranty even being the second owner. They were very helpful. Thought the motor is not a year old yet.

So I found out yesterday that the drivers side fan isn't kicking on. Checked the fuse and it's still intact. The passenger is working fine. I confirmed the malfunction turning on the ac when both fans are supposed to kick on.*

So I'm trying to find out if I should get a new oem fan motor or go after market and purchase a fan setup like spal?

Also, does anyone know of any nice gauges other aem

Phatmiata
10-10-2014, 08:36 AM
I would go with an OEM fan motor for now, you should be able to get one from any of the Mazda Dealers. If you add aftermarket fans like spal or something I think you are adding an extra headache. Just get the motor and accessories back to 100% and go aftermarket once you are more experienced and comfortable with the car later on. Really depends on your experience level too.

Greddy has some nice gauges but they are 60mm size and very expensive too

mini_fd

I took several people's advice and they seem to be on the same page. I ordered two new fan motors from mazda for a little less then 200 each. They lowered the price just above their costs which was financially helpful. They always take care of me. I will get them tomorrow and do the installation myself.

So I was pretty intimidated taking the entire front assembly of the motor apart like airbox, battery, intercooler, and upper radiayor hose but it wasn't all that bad.

Found out why my temp gauge started to creep and a burning electrical smell. It was the fan. So on Monday I'll be ordering two new fans with new hardware. I absolutely hate rust but love airplane stripper. That stuff ate up everything.

They paint on the car is still amazing for 22 years but the green is more dominant then the blue. Though I manipulated the colors a bit, you can still see hints of blue in person. All the seals will be replaced on the outside and door jams.
But we're talking after I purchase an authentic new spec 99 front end.

Autocrossed the Gal this past weekend. I'm diagnosing if I have a legit power steering leak.

What I did to remedy that was cleaning everything around the reservoir and the reservoir itself. I added dye to see if its a hose or not because the reservoir is still full. I replaced the cap for preventive cheap measures.

Need to work on that. Also the video is my best time. 49.813

There are some changes/updates that make the car a lot more reliable. Pettit Racing, sell most of those updates!

Today the car is getting the front windshield pulled to replace the moulding and stripping around the perimeter. It's curling and exposing what's underneath. I don't want a future problem with rust where water seeps in little pockets of the old adhesive. I was told that the previous owner also quite possibly tried to add a adhesive himself to fix the issue. So I'm going in there with oem seals getting the job done right.

I'm absolutely in love with this thing. The FD3S is the car that got me into cars playing Gran Turismo 2 when I was little little little. I will own one someday, maybe 10-year goal. Clean '99 will be legally importable in 2024.
We do need to talk about your damn hands though! You should be 9-3 at all times. When you shift, left hand stays at 9:00, right hand straight back after shift, sometimes banging redline is okay on course too if it's necessary. From what I've been taught by local Nats SCCA guys and some books is that your hands should stay 9-3 (insert Saab joke) unless shifting or in a hairpin. Otherwise you are putting in too much input and being slower as a result. It made me smoother, quicker and significantly more consistent so just passing on the knowledge. Car sounds amazeballs.

I'm looking into buying a racing seat for myself when I autocross. I have never bought a seat to fit my personal measurements. I looked on the seat thread but it just progressed me to ask in my thread what is suggested from experience.

I'm looking for a seat that sits a couple inches lower then stock.

I'm 6'0 with a helmet pushing 6'2

I have a 32 paint size waist.

I'm looking for something that is new and fia approved along with being light weight.

Preferably tan in color but won't steer me away completely if black.

So if anyone could direct me in a nice brand/seat lmk.

The car is going to get a paint job soon. I am going to do a S7 front end commonly known as the 99 spec oem front end. At the same time the Rx-7 Is going to have all new oem seals from mazda and Omgosh its super expensive.
Seals alone cost 1600ish along with the 10% above costs they are discounting me. Paint job is getting discounted because this is my third vehicle properly getting painted by Decaudellas. All of this because of a little bit of rust. Nonetheless, still excited.

The car is at Mazda right now. The reason is because after I installed a remanufactured alternator, it seemed one of the wires to the sensor clip that plugs in the alternator was stripped out of its connector.

The power supply cable from the alternator started to burn and melt causing a plastic burn smell. I got the car towed to Mazda from Orlando to Melbourne using AAA.

So the car is getting a new Co-harness to fix the burnt current one. The cars low beams also are not working simultaneously as this all happened. I also am getting a full inspection done because I'm driving to DGRR and afterwards taking a cross country trip in the Rx-7.

So while the car is at mazda, I'm getting brand new coil packs and in the next couple weeks having mazda replace all the bushings.

Now you think I'm crazy having the dealership work on the car and pay dealership prices but I'm receiving quality work on one special mechanic who has worked on rotaries since 1990 and I'm paying for oem parts at wholesale price.

I can't wait to get my car back.

The car is running so freaking smooth in the power band accelerating and decelerating.

I'm ordering OEM Bushings for the car. All of them and having Mazda Install them. I love that there is a paper trail on this car since it was bought and I have put all of the receipts in a binder with sheet protectors. I have also started my own binder with everything that I have done already to the Rx7. Even though its expensive to have Mazda do the work, I see it as a compensation to the extremely low prices of the parts I am purchasing. I also can show anyone in the future if the car gets sold the quality work that went into this car. A lot of do it yourselfers out there but once I pop open that binder, theyll be happy with who installed what.

Would you buy my car?

Trying to get all the bushings done and installed before Deals Gap Rotary Rally.

I got a price of both front and rear suspension done with oem bushings. The prices are fair because I'm getting the oem parts at cost what the dealer buys themso if a part for instance F131-34-200 is listed at 417, they will sell it to me for 275. Not the retail price.

I am concern and hope I am making the right decision.*

Right now it's about 4k to get the rear done by mazda and about 2100 for the front. That includes labor for about 9 hours at 115 an hour. This is upper and lower control arms complete front and back ,bushings toe links etc.*

As of right now I am getting the rear done because of the clunking and taking the bulk price of the restoration done first and then do the front in a couple months.

Okay so it's finalized.
Speaking with James from Mazda competition has been extremely pleasant. He helped me out multiple times and we together made sure what I needed.

J-auto helped me out for 40 mins on the phone for everything else Mazda competition didn't have. We went over my order from Mazda and created an order over the phone on his Web site to make sure the entire job was complete front to back.*
I purchased Mazda competition bushings. They are stiffer rubber oem bushings that are not available in the factory.*

I went with j-auto pillow balls with j auto toe links, inner/auto tie rods/ boot covers, ball joint boots, and super pro trailing arm bushing.*

After the help here online and to James and j-auto, I feel like I am making the right decision.

I got the car back from the shop. Took some time but everything got done that I asked for. I also had to pick up 2x new differential axle shaft seals because of a small leak on one side.

So, I had drained and replaced the differential fluid again in my ownership and freshen the car up with an oil change before I we head up to Deals Gap Rotary Rally on Wednesday.

The mazda competition differential bushings got installed as well in addition.

Drove the car home for 15 minutes and right away the tailing arm clunking is gone, the car feels stiffer, and I am experiencing a little bit more vibrations.

So the car did 332.5 miles on a single tank of non-ethanol 93 premium gas. That is all I try to put in the tank whenever I can locate a station. So it equals about 20.33 miles a gallon driving 83 mph with slight variations in speed.

I got the numbers after filling her up 16.35 gallons.

So I plan on purchasing ohlin's. So far I've owned tein basic's on a 02 Mazda protege, tein flex on my sold turbo 99 miata, and bc's on my 10ae miata. These will be the best set I've come to own. I can not wait to try them out autocrossing.

I am participating in a group buy for Ohlins Coilers DFV. I'll be ready for them in five to six weeks. I am super excited to finish the major components of the suspension on this car. My last comb over with it will be front and rear sway bars, links, motor mounts, and power steering bushings.

Ohlins have been shipped from sweeden.

Mazda ordered 8 turbo solenoids and all the vacuum hoses for the next job. The solenoids are 70 each and with the peace of mind that they are new comforts me a bit from reading nightmares that people were buying used ones online to fix turbo issues they had and they were malfunctioning. Better to buy new oem from the dealer.*

I also picked up an entire fuel pump assembly kit that Mazda puts together for you with new seals, hardware, and pump.

Last but not least I ordered the PRE/WG duty solenoid at 180.*

Now, I could simplify things with the rats nest but I'd like to keep some things original. I'm not looking for serious hp or even going single turbo. If I upgrade the turbos, I might consider the 99 turbos. I'm still happy with the cars power for now.

Has anyone used Evans Waterless Coolant first hand? Florida has already had 20+ 90 degree weather and if you thought your turbo miata gets hot??? The rotary is worse. I ha e everything I need to do to keep the car cool like making sure all liners are tight and installed, koyo radiator, 185* thermostat, FC Fan Switch rather then a FD, brand new FD fan motors and blades, and lastly a aftermarket non constricted downpipe to get rid of exhaust gases out of the engine bay.

I don't want a vented hood because I love the smooth oem hood so that's out of the question. So this was another way to keep engine Temps down is the Evans Waterless Coolant.

Tomorrow I will be ordering brand new oem seals for the entire car to finally get painted. I was estimated about 1600 just for the seals and weather stripping.

Now I am going to need to purchase a brand new bumper because my current one has waves in it.

I will be painting it with a high quality paint to give it a rich tone and smoothing out the rocker panels.

I haven't decided of I want oem badges for a 93/ updated badges like the s7-s8/ or go with red badges to contrast the montego blue. I don't think if I did a different set of badges it would hurt the cars authenticity.

I will be having the tail lights polished in addition to the rest of the work. Both hatch and front windshields will be removed.

Upon thinking more into this, I was contemplating having the engine pulled to paint the engine bay. While the engine was out, it would have some work done to it like clutch and flywheel, stainless steel clutch line, new slave, Mazda competition motor mounts, new radiator hoses, and possibly a turbo rebuild. We don't know what it'll cost to have to motor pulled.

Doing all of these things would be my perfect job. Well pulling the motor part and rebuilding the turbos.

HarryB

Pull the motor. It is a great chance to do so, it will most probably cost you less to do it now, and you will do a complete job.

mini_fd
08-21-2015, 07:39 AM
Ive decided to not pull the motor. Ill do the engine bay whenever I need to pull the motor out for work. I'd have to go through mazda to pull the motor because everywhere else that can probably do the job is over an hour away while the dealership is 15 mins from the paint booth.
Glad I got some magnets made for autocrossing. This Was absurd to tape both sides of the car

So I picked up my car yesterday and funny enough, I stalled a couple times. I love how it feels. I used to have a spec 6 puck sprung clutch with a fidanza flywheel which was very responsive and engaged harshly. Lots of people stalled that combo in my turbo Miata. But this feels fun, responsive, quick engagement, and wanting to go. The cars acceleration is amazing with the clutch and flywheel. I'm loving it.

I received the Brake ducts for the 99 front end today. In a couple days I'll be receiving the updated badges and decals front and back.

Does anyone know where I can purchase a Front License Plate for a Non USDM Frame that is Black and White lettering reading "RX-7"

I purchased for fun actual Japanese Plates that are registered to the Rx7 vehicle class code.

I picked up from Mazda a new radiator expansion tank since the bumper is so conveniently off. I want to take advantage to make the bay look cleaner while taking the older yellow tank out. I'm just upset that Mazda no longer makes the windshield wiper reservoir. I need to find a clean looking tank to replace mine. Does anyone know if the radiator reservoir and windshield wiper reservoir interchangeable and can be replaced by the other?

So if the dealership doesn't have the items that I need, I'll forever check MMS. I just like ordering from the Dealership because I pay 10 percent above cost for items and receive free shipping next day or next couple days v.s. ordering at cost plus shipping.

I went to the paint shop and its being painted today or tomorrow. Shop is backed up and there are so many people dropping off their cars, boats, etc to get done and they are starting to get overwhelmed. Luckily, I will be ready for the Miami Churrasco Meet next Saturday.

Are there any Miami Miata owners going to the Rotary Meet on the 7th at Markham Park?

As for the light bulbs I was questioning about, I'm an idiot. Since I bought OEM Turn Signal lamps, Mazda already has them inside.

Just as I was about to get the car, I seemed to have not order a few hard plastic seals to replace some old ones. I get them tomorrow and will quickly drop them off to clay. I'm so upset with myself though I know the job is done right.

I was missing the hard plastic seal that wipes the window on the outside of the door the length of the window, the top half of the window hard plastic seal outside, and a polished black triangle plastic that goes in the front corner outside of the window near the side mirror. All costing around 572.00. Astonished by the price Mazda gave me but I am already deep into the restoration and paint job that I can't go back. It wouldn't be right.

mini_fd
12-08-2015, 06:26 PM
There's an oil mixing pump "omp" that squirts oil into one of the chambers in the Rotary engine to lubricate the walls and seals. If the OMP goes bad you can say bye bye to the engine. This is a preventive cause to help prevent a rebuild. Also, if your running your rotary engine hard in autocross and track, this is highly recommended to ratio it. 1:1 when tracking and .5:1 when autorcrossing/daily driving.

I did get all 9's for the spark plugs and ripped out the magnecore wires and installed ngk tight fitted spark plug wires.

I also installed a new OEM O2 sensor because It hadn't been replaced since 93.

Pics of the spark plugs. Now I think these were new as of 01/13/15 from my records of receipts. which is no more then 13k miles in my documents.

I've driven that many miles last year and driven 19k miles since 09/01/14. I have done multiple autocross events since the last plugs were replaced. I also had ngk 7's and ngk 9's

I used Pettit Racings Premix which I've already switched over to Idemitsu's Premix.

Todays task consist of unlooping and un capping the lines that route to the Duty Valve.

The other day in doing so, I had broken the nipple off the old solenoid and I ordered a new one from Mazda. What a difference visually. The Duty Valve is the Pre/WG solenoid that controls the pressurization for both waste gates and acts like a boost controller.

Chasing down this boost leak is killing me. I'm taking the car to Pettit Racing tomorrow morning to do a boost leak test and remedy.

I just replaced the pill restrictive hoses that connect to both wastegates. Luckily in doing so, one hose that was suppose to have a pill didn't and needed to be replaced anyways. The pills act like a boost controller. Yes I could have bought two controllers but then that's more hose and two more objects in my bay. When I upgrade to the 99 twins, then I'll install boost controllers.

Thanks you guys. I believe that replacing every single bushing with Mazda motorsports competition, getting Ohlins, Re-11s and not enjoying the car would be a crime. This car feels brand new as it looks. So much that I hope Jeanne and I are taking it cross country to some National parks. That is still in its scribbles but she okd it vs paying for a rental car and paying a little over 3k for 3 weeks. We also considered a RV but I want to drive it to places I've never been before. Towards September is when we'll be going so I plan to do a full brake restoration along with everything else.

I don't want body kits or flares, aftermarket this and that. I want it clean simple and elegant as it should be. We will be getting new wheels for the car but that's probably after the RE-11s are needing replacement. We'll be getting 18s as it not only looks appropriate on the size of the car but also because of autocrossing. There are better tires then 16s and less sidewall flex. They will be bronze colored.

We did consider getting shine auto feed style skirts, shine auto tail light bill, and or 99 spec side skirts. This isn't on the top of my list to do right away.

So I developed an exhaust leak with the stock twins. It's inevitable. Especially since just about everything has been touched and replaced but the twins with 147k miles. Yes, that number is correct. I put on 22k miles in about a year 20 months on a rotary.

So, tomorrow I am checking out a set of N3G1 99 spec twins along with a HKS down pipe, and a bonez or rx7store.net midpipe. Still need to figure out what it is that's replacing my stock midpipe.

I'm hoping to get it done before autocross this weekend. We'll see.

What they look like and picked them up in Orlando. They were from the owner in Sarasota who had to commute for some work and it worked out in less then a day to be picked up.

I picked up an HKS Downpipe and the twins which seem to be either rebuilt nicely with decently clean and new hardware or its really just that they are extremely low miles.

Either way I'm happy for the secondary turbo fix I'm currently going under way. The 93 turbos are on their way out with just a coolant line and two oil lines in the way of removing the setup.

Heres what the Y-pipe looks like inside. We suspect the Secondary is blowing oil.

This crack isn't bad at all. There are exhaust ports with two or multiple cracks that owners install. This set is extremely clean as be been told sharing pictures with friends.

Some people think the 99 twins are overrated and going single is the best decision if the turbo setup is already removed. But these are my thoughts:

I'm already invested in a properly working twin setup. I.E. New vacuum hoses, new solenoids, new parts all oem.
The 99 twins spool faster then the USDM and are more efficient along with adding 40+ additional hp tuned over a tuned USDM
Model.

There are BNR twin turbos which they port the housing for the wider fins. They are even better and more powerful. I would have liked to bought the BNRs but I would be spending 3k when I got a killer deal on the 99 spec turbos.

The turbos and a very expensive HKS downpipe was picked up for 800.

We wrapped tonight up at 12:30 and were finishing it the install tomorrow. I can't wait to rip it up.

mini_fd

I also purchased and installed 99 spec twin turbos since I had an exhaust gasket leak on the block to the lower exhaust manifold. I was also burning oil in the secondary(so we think)

Between the exhaust ports was cracked

Open Down pipe start up

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Djt4huaxeNc

Still didn't fix the lower boost on the secondary. The 99s pull a lot harder because they are slightly larger then the 93 usdm models. And they are more efficient. Reason is still being determined why the sequential system on the secondary is running lower boost. Boost on the primary hits hard at 12lbs. Im working on the secondary to match that same psi level to redline.

I soften the dampening on the Ohlin coilovers to help out with my oversteering issue where my tail end likes to slide a lot. This helped out a lot during autocross this weekend.
I am thinking of unhooking my rear sway bar in the future for the next event.

Replaced the hood latch release cable because it broke on the molded plastic part that creates tension. I can now see that Mazda revised the part by adding a little bit of metal overlay.

This past weekend was awesome at Nantahala Village were Rotaries on the east coast gather for a 4 day event.
Jeanne and I drove up to Atlanta late Wednesday afternoon taking back roads from the Florida Georgia line to Macon on mostly US23. We took our time sight seeing and viewing the Old towns of America like we always do for trips and enjoyed the cruise. We rather not take a Interstate to preplanned destinations if we have the time to avoid them.

The next morning was Thursday and I noticed a big decrease in power other then my slow engagement of the second turbo and low boost. This leak and power loss was affecting the entire power band and there was a big whoosh sound when I got on it. GREAT! only boosting close to 6lbs.

Dale was quick to point a finger and say, "well that doesn't look good. Your problems right there!"

I tore a nice slit in the exhaust pipe to the intercooler. I was glad it was something we can fix with ease and that it wasn't an expensive one. Dale quickly told me that Addicted Performance might have a stock pipe laying around from their work on rx7s. So I crossed my fingers and hoped the entire trip wasn't handicapped to waste gate pressure at DGRR. But I was also happy that it wasn't anything else.

That night we got to Addicted and what do you know, Dale was right. They had a spare hose that they were ready to toss out for that same very reason I had just experienced earlier that day. I paid 20 bucks and had the tools to do a quick but very hot install because we take the dragon to get there. 10 mins later and I'm back to 12lbs primary. Wahoo.

Drove home after dinner at Calhouns which is in Maryville with a group of 13 people. Dinner was good and we are exhausted from the barbecue and long day of driving. We unfortunately took the Dragon back to our lodge and it is no fun driving it at night. It is dark, the percentage of danger increased dramatically and I'm tired. We pushed on and in the middle of the run I get dizzy and somewhat get vertigo and pull to the side because I lost focused. The tree line ended and my headlights hit across the valley to the other side of the mountain and tripped my brain out. The Depth of Field like in photography played games with my sight so I pulled off. I let the other guys in the group drive ahead of me and I followed last regaining my focus. WE all made it back to the village safe and sound.

The next day the group did a run on the Cherohala Skyway. Before we headed out I wanted to know why the car was feeling so out of place and my confidence was out the window. The car didn't feel right to me. I come to find out the dampening on the front struts are at two extremes of full stiff and full soft. NO wonder. This isn't the car that feels great out on an autocross coarse pulling times right behind BSP class. So I dampened all four struts 8 clicks from full stiff. I also was too high on all four tires. I was maximizing my fuel economy up to Atlanta because we all know rotaries are excellent on mpg. Not.

I was at 45 all around and lowered it closer to my Autocross pressures which are 32 up front and 29 in rear. I had 36 up front and 32 in the rear after the deflate. After the adjustments, the car felt normal to me again. I regained my confidence and ran the rest of the day proud and confident. I can't believe how I'm starting to feel the car out and notice when something is wrong. Its taking a while this time around. We drove out to Bryson City to wash the cars off of the extermination performed on the runs and ate dinner at Pasqualianos.

On Friday, the event holds a classic meet for all the rotaries to participate in Judging for best generation RX7s and receive an award that evening. So I got my car at the site rather early. I won't say how early but it was brisk at low 40s. Got there and saw that everyone had left their cars in the lot over night. There were two unofficial parking spaces left so I pulled backwards into one. I walked back to my cabin made coffee and got ready for the day. I let Jeanne sit back on this event so she isn't overloaded with cars this cars that blah rotary brap brap. When I walked back to the main lot, everyone was already out cleaning their cars with detailer and rags of micro fiber clothe. So I began my quick clean up of the engine bay and wiped all the pollen that the Appalachian had given to me. I detailed the outside just in time and the meet was underway.

I took some pictures of other rotaries and enrolled in the car show. The meet closed at around 12 and Jeanne and I headed to Bryson City to enjoy each others company as well as eat lunch and go shopping at mom and pop venues.

We ate lunch at https://www.theeveretthotel.com/bistro.html which is a farm to table restaurant and it was FANTASTIC. Not expensive at all. It was delicious. After Lunch we walked around antique shops, stopped by the local brewery to try a flight of beers and bought a bomber to bring back home. We also discovered that the train depot in the middle of the city does rides through the mountains leaving at 10 and arriving at 3pm. It is something we might do next year. The though of riding a train along mountainside and through tunnels excites me. Its something a car can not do.

We walked back to our car and stopped by an old Soda Fountain business and had Chocolate and Vanilla malts for the ride back to the resort to meet up with the Florida crew to eat dinner at https://noc.com/places/restaurants/rivers-end-restaurant

Super delicious food and big portions. This restaurant was inspired to feed hungry hikers. Plus its on the river with locals fly fishing and kayakers. I ordered local trout tacos which was good and Jeanne ate the Sherpa. For dessert there was peach and apple cobbler. We were excited to get the blackberry cobbler but they changed it up a bit. Don't get me wrong. The apple cobbler topped with vanilla ice-cream was just as good.

So we paid our bill and head back home for the raffling prizes and awards. Jeanne and I held our tickets for the drawings and we won a long sleeve DGRR shirt, mazda iron on badge, IRPerformance Poly Urethane Motor Mounts, two adaptronic hats, Concentrated jug of rubber/vinyl cleaner, and some miscellaneous stuff. It was a good roll for us. But that didn't end the night. Awards for best car was being announced. I'm already pretty happy about the motor mounts.

So we hear the awards being named for best SA and FC with first, second, and third place. It was time for the FD awards. And what do I mistakenly hear? Third place FD goes to Heraldo!!! Now I was confused because it wasn't my name. But I've been called that in the past by friends and it couldn't be me. There were too many other good looking FD's out there with single turbo this, AERO that , Widebody, 3 piece wheels and so forth. I'm just a simple clean FD that stuck to how he wanted to share what an FD should look like for others to enjoy. And that is just that. I was a simple clean example of a car that we all love. And I received 3rd place after I was called up more then once and car was described as Montego blue.

I was super honored to receive the award and very gracious. I almost wanted to grab the megaphone and say an Academy Awards speech naming Jeanne as priority of the award.

That ended my day and my entire year of hard work getting the car to the point to where it is at right now.

As a bonus for the drive home, the car performed 342.7 miles on a tank of gas before triggering the low fuel light. I filled up 15.63 gallons which equates to 21.9257 mpg.

Remember I'm not tuned but running the base map off the PFC ecu. We also took a very nice curvy road back home that is in North Carolina. I will get that route later tonight to post it up. It was a beautiful drive with creeks alongside of the road, lakes, and falls.

Pictures follows......

This week the car is going to kilo racing so they can tinker the low secondary boost. I am experiencing a 12-4-6 pattern.

While its there I have a few things getting down.

Brand new oem tps sensor installed

IRPerformance motor mounts

Elite rotary oil pan brace ( looks like I'm leaking oil around the brace and on the oil mixing pump lines) so when they look deeper into the leak, I have a set of steel flex lines to replace the plastic lines.

Fixing the 99 fog lights. They light up connected to the battery but not when hooked up correctly to oem connector. I'm receiving power too but it's all weird.

Banzai Racing delete kit

I'm dropping off the Hks RS intake to get painted and clear coated silver along with the Hks S pipe. to have an oem look. I cleaned and have the Hks filters but I'm going to use the K&N filters instead.

I also purchased a HKS twin power.

So I got back news from Kilo Racing with and update that is upsetting but comes with opportunities.

The car wasn't leaking oil from the oil pan as I thought it was. It's leaking from a broken oil mixing pump line. Its basically severed. He offered to do a fix to it that I did not want to do but asked him to do it the right way. He offered a different fix since I'm to be Wed this September. I'm still having him install the oil pan brace to prevent future leaks from the engine flexing.

I said to him lets do it the right way because Jeanne and I drive this car a lot and I autocross it on occasion.

He hasn't fixed the secondary Turbo issue because this is a new issue.

We discussed a few things and he mentioned that in order to replace the lines he needs to remove the motor. I was apprehended by that sentence and asked to call him back. I talked to a few people to make sure there wasn't another way to do it and to have my rotary friends reassure me that this is the way to do so and the easiest.

So I called back and asked a ball park number that'll stick to let me fiance know and be prepared for with tonights dinner and opening a really nice bottle of wine thats several hundred dollars.

I am having the injectors sent to marren. The previous owner has a reciept from 2004 when he had them rebuilt. So it'll be interesting to see the differences once again.
I ordered new injector grommets since marren will more then likely provide new o-rings.

I purchased a new oem fuel pulsation dampener and new fuel pressure regulator. I was contemplating ordering the new fuel hose that connects the primary and secondary rails.

I like to get things powdercoated to look nice but today isn't the time to do it. I simply can't strain the wedding funds anymore. We still need to pay off the remaining balance to the venue, pay for the catering next Friday, and find a florists, photographer, and music. Luckily we already have the dress. Thank god.

I do need an efini y pipe. I'm going to ask kilo if he has one. Well degrease the engine bay though it's pretty clean from the view up top. I'm pretty sure it's ugly down under and inside.

I'm skipping the harness unless kilo says or recommends a new one since they are about 840.00 from my dealership and there's only one in North America.

Kilo is going to inspect the sequential system. All the solenoids and vacuum hoses are a year old now. But it'll be easier when the motor is out.

The coils are new as of 16 months ago. He is suggesting I hook up the choke again that Pettit racing deleted. Each mechanic has there own points of views. I'll just let him do so.

We will block off the air pump with the delete kit I purchased.

So the motor is pulled out and Kilo said one of the injectors is potentially leaking. Not from the diffuser or metal grate but possibly from the body. He sees stress cracks on a couple of them.

So He is installing a set of 99 injectors he knows works well. I asked him if we should take them to get cleaned and flowed and he emphasized that they are good and work well.

He also looked around the turbos and thinks some lines are not correct for the secondary turbo. Ill confirm with him tomorrow when I stop by to drop off the new emissions harness I just dished out.

He said that it is his recommendation to replace the harness since the car not only has 155k miles and is 25 years old but because a couple of clips are broken and the wires are brittle. FML

The car has been in the shop since May 2nd but because I had to order parts along the way and wait for them to arrive, is wait pushed my car back from getting fixed any faster.

And its funny that David Hayes was there pulling out my motor on my car. I saw his car there when I dropped mine off and it looks fantastic.

Stress from heat cycling or duty cycle?

mini_fd
06-02-2016, 09:27 AM
@kungfujesus I'm not sure which it is. I would assume heat because of the injectors location under the manifold and the rats nest with no air flow.

Im heading over to Kilo Racing now to drop the harness off. Ill have more pictures taken once I'm there.

Kilo said he is going to pressure wash the bay and even do a light coat of paint on the inside for me.

Photos of the motor out and whats been done so far. New OMP lines, New fuel dampener, New pressure regulator, new primary to secondary fuel line, 99 injectors, New injector grommets, New oil squirters. The work continues tomorrow with the harness and the rats nest.

Everything got done as I hoped it would. I was a bit hesitant in my first year of owning the car but regret not going sooner to Kilo.

I have absolutely zero oil leaks. Hooray!!! I hope to not replace the Oil mixing pump lines ever again. Though, I took advantage of the situation being that the motor was being pulled for multiple things.

Today I installed the Hks twin power and man does it go through the power band ultra smooth. I couldn't believe it. The motor felt effortless. (could be that new harness too)

So the boost is not where I'd like it to be. It doesn't drop to 3 psi like it used to before I took it to Kilo Racing. It drops at 8psi where it should and climbs back up to .67bar

I tried to manipulate the PFC with boost levels between the turbos and percentages but I couldn't get it to .8bar

I kept blowing off couplers every time I took the car out to day on the exhaust intake side.

We'll some pictures after 7 weeks of diagnosing, ordering, and performing on the car.

Today I was let aware by the pictures I posted of coolant dripping on top of the motor mount was installed incorrectly. The red bushing, bolt, nut was supposed to be underneath the subframe with the bolt gravity fed.

I also fixed a vacuum line that I had connected with a fitting to another line to extend the length to reach a port on the manifold with new silicone 3.5mm black silicone hose. I bought 10 feet of it for future fixes. I also purchased 7 feet of 6mm silicone hoses.

I installed a new start Lev-r cap for the AST.

And today I ordered new high rated 500•F rated rubber caps from http://www.mcmaster.com/#high-temperature-caps/=12xfqnk for my new intake pipes.

I changed out the plastic fitting going into the housing that twists itself to the heater core line running on the back side of the firewall. I believe that was the cause of the leak. I also replaced the 90* elbow hose from the bottom of the throttle body as well for good faith. I also burped the radiator system and added more coolant.

So this is how I've been cooling the car down after driving it around town and park it in my garage. I see high temps when I come back to the car after going into a store but they quickly drop once I start the car. It doesn't run hot. Just sits hot at unsettling high numbers.

I have a 3 Fan set up. The 2800cfm air mover gets placed in front of the opening of the bumpers mouth, the white fan sits on the bumper mounts and in front of the intercooler while I remove the pressure chamber to the side to get air pushed under the intake manifold, then the oscillating fan to bow air to both of the other two. LOL paranoid yes. Getting the car to cool down faster, Yes.

You talk of high temps after shut-off. All cars do it. It is called super-heating. But there are ways around it.

Cooling fans are cooling the front. Meh!

Electrical water pumps that continue to circulate the coolant thru the engine until the temp. is safe.... Like a turbo-timer for your engine. M2C

I might consider a turbo timer or even this brand of coolant which David Hayes uses in his newly built Single turbo 20B rx7 and notice a significant temp drop of 11-13f

So guess what?!

It was the primary turubo oil seal that blew! Not the motor. So the motor is still pulled out of the car. Kilo says that I have a slight e shaft crank pulley wobble. Says the motor is fine for another 3-5 years. I'm sure I'll be back on this thread in 2 years saying the motor blew. We'll see.

So I just bought stage 3 BNRs for my replacement turbos. Stock setup. Flows even better then the 99 twins and 2x as much as the oem. Runs cooler and pushes out more power.

mini_fd
09-20-2016, 06:19 PM
The turbos length are longer then oem. If you noticed the y-pipe is extended for this reason.

copied:

The new BNR Stage 3's have many improvents over the factory HT12 turbochargers. The factory HT12's are not rebuildable in most cases. The stage 3's however are not remanufactured turbochargers. They have new CHRA's (Center Housing Rotating Assemblies) and the factory end housings are machined to fit the new CHRA's. The Stage 3's are not rebuilt or remanufatured.

The turbine wheels have larger inducer and exducer measurements over stock giving the turbine wheels more leverage to push the larger, more efficient compressor wheels while decreasing backpressure in the turbine housings. The turbine wheels have more blades giving it even more leverage than before and also the wheel casting is much thicker than stock. In an event of a blown apex seal, the turbine wheel (more than likely) will survive, unlike the stock turbine wheels in the stock twins or the 99 spec twins which are a very thin cast that will be heavily damaged. Apex seal damage will cause slow spool, inadequate boost, and lack of power. The shafts in the stage 3's are 1/4" in diameter compared to 5mm in diameter like the stock/99 spec twins. Also the shaft has left hand thread shaft nuts which eliminates the issues of shaft nuts shooting off like the stock turbos have a tendancy to do under high boost. It can lead to engine failure if cases are bad enough.

The thrust bearings are upgraded to a 360 degrees for proper lubrication of the rotating assemblies up to 180K rpm! This means you can run a tremendous amount of boost without killing thrust bearings. The stock thrust bearings are 270 degree bearings which aren't reliable to run over 15 psi of boost. 360 bearings are standard on BNR Stage 3's.

The stage 3 comes with an adjustable wastegate actuator. This allows you to turn up or down the boost mechanically w/o a electronic or manual boost controller. The adjustable actuator can also make the boost controllers more effective because you are working them less to turn up the boost.

sequential or non? either way, great choice!

Don't think I saw this in your thread, but since cooling is a big concern with these, are you still on the stock downpipe?

mini_fd
09-20-2016, 10:37 PM
Still sequential. I believe that it's pointless to go non sequential on twins like some owners do. If that's the case, just install a single turbo and be done with it. I couldn't tell you how many people give me crap about why I should've gone single but they all also know why I chose to stick with the twins. It's a love hate.
I integrated a product for my cooling system called Engine Ice. David Hayes has real world results of 7-8 degrees cooler temps in his single turbo 20 B that Kilo Racing witness as he performed the engine install of his car. This is after the fact that kilo did the V-mount install for his 20B!

Detonation. Caused by a few things.

Lots of heat on the irons. Cat failed.

Inside crank sensor was broken and mounted on only one bolt. Vibrated so much it sent wrong signals to computer and caused the spark to blow the apex seal and took a chunk out of the rotor.

The housing is done too.

The harness that connects the coil packs together, the trailing part of the harness tab was broken and not making a strong connection. That's why we smelled a burning electrical smell in the firewall.

The spacer at the end of the eccentric shaft was the wrong size. It was a Mazda b size which Mazda makes a,b,c,d size to either tighten the entire block or loosen it by 1000th of an inch. It was sanded down to a smaller size by the builder.

The clutch plate on the exedy was unevenly worn. Was told it could be a manufacture issue as was described by IRPERFORMANCE from his experience with them or my driving habits.

Tomorrow they are checking everything else is in spec. They said the rear housing and rotor are great.

They also said they are pulling the bnrs apart to inspect how much damage the chunk of rotor and apex seal caused if any.

Also, someone cut the baffle on the oil pan and don't know why. That angers me because there is no need to do that. I'm the second owner and the first owner might have been taken advantage of

I purchased two new crank pulley sensors, a brand new housing, brand new oil pan, and a coil harness.
I purchased a grade A rotor because a housing is more important to replace New then a rotor. Housings were 735 and rotors are 530.

The motor is in good hands. It will be in spec and measured.

What Irperformance indicated why my motor blew:

It was a complete rebuild with new housings and rotors from mazda individually. I have the receipt from the previous owner and the shop the built it in Sarasota.

Irperformance discovered that the Endplay was too loose because the rear spacer was grinder/sanded down and reused.

The Irons had too much heat and failed

The catalytic converter melted

The crank angle sensor was over sighted and the bracket was broken so it wasn't reading the trigger wheel accurately.

Ultimately the apex seal chipped from detonation.

If Irperformance wants to comment, please feel free to clarify even further.

The BNRs have minor chipping on the front turbine. They were built to withstand a apex seal shooting through them. BNR checked them out and confirmed that they are good to go and do not need a rebuild.

Out of curiosity, why keep the OMP instead of premixing? Or do you still plan to premix?

From my understanding the fuel injectors have a better spray pattern, so premixing will give better oiling.

mini_fd
04-13-2017, 09:27 PM
The oil mixing pump does a fine job lubricating the side walls of the housings. And though some people delete it, I also premix to give it superior protection in addition of it ever fails. The omp is a mechanical rotary pump. I don't want to rely on premix only because if I'm on a long distance trip and run out of premix, I'm kinda put in a pickle. Double the protection. Double wrap.

Had a blast with the car at Deals Gap Rotary Rally. We had to replace the oil restrictors though because there is a lot of blow by in both the hot and cold side of the intercooler piping collecting around the silicone couplers. I'm monitoring the car to see if the new custom oil restrictor bolts that Irp made will help out. Fingers crossed.

Just received the C's Short shifter from 1ga and greatly appreciative of his services and quality parts at competitive prices.

So, Shout out to him.

It took me a bit of time of trial and error since their are no instructions that I could find or pictures.

If anyone has any questions I'd be happy to explain the process.

I was also disappointed that the brass r-magic shifter collar didn't fit. Its too loose on both the oem and c's short shifter. I'm going to order the aluminum collar from Atkins Rotary.

The Feed Heavy weight shift knob feels amazing in my hand and shifting with the C's short shifter. Its rigid, stiff, and clicks in.

I had the ac lines remade since they were leaking freon. I also installed a brand new compressor. The lines were heated and bended to be routed around the v-mount when it was installed with lots of questionable kinks. So I took those lines to be templated for the new lines. They reused the fittings and welded it to the aluminum.

So my onslaught towards cold blowing A/C might be a bit hysterical or over the top.

I do have cold A/C but only when I'm cruising high speeds, in the rain, and when the temperature outside is below mid 80s

I don't believe the air is cooling the condenser as well as the intercooler or the radiator where the radiator fans underneath are extracting the heat at a fast 2700 cfm's combined.

I am currently installing a Spal Fan that has a true 708CFM's that I'll be mounting on top of the condenser pulling air from the main mouth of the car where the Radiator receives most of the air flow.

I am almost considering buying a second fan because it actually might fit. The condenser measures a rough 10x24 and is meeting the intercooler towards the rear at a sloped angle. It starts getting tighter towards the back so i needed a small depth fan.

Yes the hot condenser will be blowing air onto the intercooler.

My quest for my A/C to perform as efficient as possible continues with the purchase of a CoverCraft Sunshade. Parking the car while Jeanne and I are enjoying the weekend cruise and doing some historic district shopping etc.( " she's calls it antiquing" Don't judge me lol) but the car bakes in the sun. Florida parking lots have no trees to retreat underneath to.

Well, one step closer to my insanity consists of this custom cut CoverCraft UVS100 through https://www.carid.com/1993-mazda-rx-...-10095883.html Keeping the dash as ambient as possible is my goal because the A/C has to cool the dash before we can really feel the cool air. I ordered the UVS100 and waited for a month to receive the product. That wait seem to be nonexistent as I put the shade on the front windshield. I couldn't believe how nicely it fit. I mean were talking snug with little to no light protruding through the edge of the pillar. Its structure is a very thick accordion style fold board that seems to have strength since it can prop itself up without the help of the sun visors to lay it flat against the windshield. The instructions though ask for you to press them against the sunshade.

I also had the option to pick a reflective color which was Gold because I am engulfed in the Montego Blue life and Gold along with Bronze goes well with the paint.

Heres some pictures. I am also going to have installed a 3M crystalline Clear tint on the windshield to keep the dash cool while driving because the A/C is cooling the dash before it cools us.
