revlimiter Lenses (http://revlimiter.net/store/glass.php)

High performance anti-reflective lenses for various aftermarket gauge clusters.
<2% total reflectivity, ~97% light transmission.
Double sided AR coating. This is a chemical process, not a mechanical frosting.
Lenses are shatter resistant and abrasion resistant.
Optical quality, like high quality eyeglasses for your gauges.

Hit my store (http://revlimiter.net/store/glass.php) for price and ordering info!

No photoshop trickery. This is exactly what my camera shows, sized down and watermarked. Lights are the same on both lamps.

http://revlimiter.net/store/glass/glass2.jpg
Two plain glass lenses, two revlimiter Lenses, and no glass over the oil gauge opening.

http://revlimiter.net/store/glass/glass3.jpg
This shows the performance quite well under the most harsh conditions. While there is some reflection, you can still see the scale and numbers on the right side gauges easily. The left side is totally blown out.

Graphs are awesome.

The lenses are installed in this shot.

Original post:
There was a thread not long ago about anti-reflective glass for KG Works clusters. I'm preparing to get some cut. My water jet shop gives me great rates and I have a local source for museum-quality anti-reflective UV protective glass. I thought I'd post and see what sort of interest there might be.

I've got a KGW cluster in Sharka. Joel (voteforpedro) has sent me a set of RS Refine rings to get glass made for. I'm not really interested in doing more than these two sizes at the moment. I'm also not really looking to do anything sexy with the NB KGW cluster and try to make glass for it. Sorry NB guys. Perhaps in the future.

As for pricing... I honestly have no idea. I've not even asked the water jet for a quote, but I've got a guestimate in my head. I'm hoping to be able to offer a set of glass for the $60 to $75 range. Shipping would add a few bucks on top of that. Please realize, I'm not sure if this price point is possible, but I *think* it might be.

So... please form a list below so that I can get an idea of how many might be interested.

the idea is best for the NB guys as the KGW did not come with independent glass.

Agreed, a set for NB would be nice, but not sure I want to tackle installation job, Eric or Hyper probably have more free time than me though.

As far as I know, the NB KG Works cluster IS NOT COMPATIBLE with glass in an unmodified form. It needs significant mods before it can actually take five individual pieces of glass. That's beyond the scope of this project and why I didn't want to offer it.

Please, for the time being, just limit the discussion to the two items mentioned, KGW NA glass and RS Refine glass.

Out of curiosity, what price would be too much? Keep in mind that the "OEM" option from KGW is selling for the $175 range.

I think I have a set of RS-Refine rings here somewhere, I need to dig them out now, I thought they came WITH glass?? If not then I might want to order a set too !!

Also, how are you planning to adhere the glass to the rings?

revlimiter
09-15-2014, 09:24 AM
RS Refine came with plexi. KGW came with glass. Both are very reflective. This stuff I'll produce will be as anti-reflective as current glass tech allows.

All glass that I have made will be identical size to the original and will just go in place of the original. On the KG cluster, it's sandwiched between pieces of metal. On the RS Refine, I believe the glass glues in.

I took mine apart yesterday to measure the glass. =)

1: Remove KGW gauge cluster cover from car.
2: Unscrew the four corner screws. They use a 2mm hex key.
3: Unscrew five indicator lights. You can use your fingers. You need to remove all the ones with the big chrome bezel: turn, high beam, and the two amber ones.
4: the two metal plates now separate easily. Swap the glass.
5: reinstall in reverse order.

-edit-
At least that's how mine came apart. I know KGW changed stuff over the years. Some have all metal parts. Some have a mix of metal and plastic. Some use plastic on the bottom layer. I don't think the glass was glued in on any of them. It just pressure fits.

They won't. The RS Refine glass is pretty tiny. Smaller even than the opening in the KGW rings.

I didn't get Randy's question right. Doh.

The RS Refine *rings* might not fit inside the openings on the KGW cluster. Looks like the openings are too small. The small RS-R ring is 3mm (three) larger than the opening. The large ring is .4mm (point four) larger than the opening on the KGW cluster.

If you opened up the holes, they would work.

The RSRefine rings were made to attach to the stock gauge panel - IIRC. I tried to attach them to a stock panel, and yes they do fit.
I also tried to fit them to a gauge panel that I had also has attached a Black AWD gauge panel (AWD panel overlay?) to.
RSRefine rings ALSO fit with the AWD panel installed to the factory gauge panel. The look is similar to KGW, but different, which is why I like how it looks.
(and it had the rear defroster indicator, which KGW does not) :)

Doming them would make them even MORE reflective. And that would require custom glass molding. That would be exponentially more expensive than just having glass cut.

And no, not too late at all. This thread is just to give me an idea of how many of each to make. I've not taken any money. Heck, I don't even know how much the final cost will be.

1 sheet of the glass might be a total loss. The other sheets are still uncut. I can try taking them to an actual glass cutting shop. I mentioned the project at the water jet shop and they said it would be no problem... which is why I started there.

I'll work on the glass some more later this week. MAYBE the water spots can be removed without destroying the anti-glare coating.

Dave737

How about a protective film on the glass during the water jet process?

revlimiter
11-14-2014, 01:52 PM
^ I had that idea last night before reading your post just now. I went to the water jet shop and covered the glass in vinyl transfer film. It's decently sticky, doesn't harm the anti-glare coating, and I have some wide rolls. I covered both sides. I'll get another sheet cut and see what happens.

Adam, you are a cool cat. The community appreciates what you do. You are taking a chance and trying to do something that no one else has done. You are out there on the edge and we dig that about you (that, and we know it is not in you to produce an inferior product). a random thought: Does anyone make an anti-glare tempered glass? (Not sure if that would be usable with a water jet though).

revlimiter
12-20-2014, 07:02 PM
I won't be using a water jet for this item in the future. I think the not-smooth edge contributed to the glass cracking. Or rather, CAUSED. I only used it because the owner was eager to cut the glass. They're a great shop and the jet is a great tool, but I don't think it's the thing for this.

Airbrush1
12-22-2014, 08:26 AM
not sure if the possibility has been mentioned, but could a film be used on the glass after cutting to not only stabilize it but also to remove glare rather than using anti-glare glass?

freedomgli
12-22-2014, 08:56 AM
A film is good for impact protection (shower door, car side window). But I believe what is needed here is real anti-glare glass that has a vapor deposited coating like Crizal and then it needs to be cut without getting stained. Finally, I think the edges need a bevel to reduce stress risers from the cutting process. Adam, seek out your local optometrist to see how they finish eyeglass lenses after being ground to the correct prescription. Therein lies the answer.

To both questions: I have no idea. I know that MINE is not anti-reflective. I hate to sound selfish, but that's honestly all I care about. I need to make glass for Sharka. It's an obsession.

And if I happen to make a few hundred other sets, that's a bonus.

It's already enough complication to deal with the KGW glass and RS-Refine NA glass. I don't want to add a possible 3rd size in there at this time, especially since I have no idea how many more failures I'll have. Once I have a successful prototype, I'll consider it.

I could have bought about 5 KGW clusters at current market rate so far... lol

revlimiter Lenses (http://revlimiter.net/store/glass.php)

High performance anti-reflective lenses for various aftermarket gauge clusters.
<2% total reflectivity, ~97% light transmission.
Double sided AR coating. This is a chemical process, not a mechanical frosting.
Lenses are shatter resistant and abrasion resistant.
Optical quality, like high quality eyeglasses for your gauges.

Hit my store (http://revlimiter.net/store/glass.php) for price and ordering info! Intro price: $59 + shipping!

Two plain glass lenses, two revlimiter Lenses, and no glass over the oil gauge opening.

This shows the performance quite well under the most harsh conditions. While there is some reflection, you can still see the scale and numbers on the right side gauges easily. The left side is totally blown out.

RS refine rings are aftermarket gauge cluster rings that were made in small quantities in Japan and will fit OEM or AWD gauge clusters.

KG works gauge cluster rings are slightly smaller than OEM / AWD / RS refine ring sizes.

None are 'preferable' so to speak, its really what you have/prefer.

Just placed my order.

A question: What are the differences between the RS and KGW clusters? Is one preferable to the other?

Thanks!

As Willywongka said. :) However, the RS Refine lenses are pretty small. Much smaller than the KGW actually.

There's also one thing - my lenses are 2mm thick. The RSR lenses are 1mm thick. I don't THINK this will be a problem, but it's untested. We'll know once a few people fit the RSR sized lenses in their clusters.

The internal area of the RSR lenses is much smaller than the OEM opening. . The outer diameter of the RSR rings is equal to the OEM gauge opening.

Bruce

Thanks, Adam,

That difference is certainly not evident in the pictures. I would imagine the Artworks Dewa gauges must be even smaller given those thick rings.

Anyway, thanks again and congratulations on the strong launch!

If this Yahoo Japan listing is correct, there were two series of the KGW gauge clusters. The original, which was discontinued a few years ago, was heavier and made of more metal and glass pieces. The second, and current, series is lighter and uses more plastic.

The listing states (Google translation):

"Production end out-of-print is an ultra-scarce goods.
The current product has been used many plastic parts, initial product ramp around, texture is quite different in the metal also make the instrument panel around.
Meter glass also I feel the weight that was heavily to have to hand in hard glass. Hard glass, SUS304 hairline finish specifications, I will probably difficult to obtain.
The initial made of rare parts that are no longer apparent much current. Towards the collector looking for, to dress up around the meter, and how might it be."

http://page5.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/e154836199

This might explain the conflicting descriptions found on-line regarding whether the KGW vs. RS clusters are the same or not. Some say the current KGW clusters are the same as the RS clusters. If true, which size of Adam's panels would fit?

I ordered two sets from Adam (one of each) because I have no clue what cluster I really have or which size it will take--and Adam's lenses are 1/3 the price of the anti-glare KGW lenses AND appear to be FAR more effective in reducing glare based upon the on-line photos I have seen.

revlimiter
04-25-2015, 10:52 AM
well.... that's.... uncomfortable. The idea that my KGW glass might not fit all of the clusters? My skin is crawling.

We'll burn that bridge when we come to it I guess.

The KGW glass I have is 94.6mm on the large lenses and 50.5mm on the small ones.
The RSR lenses are 89mm and 41mm.

I don't see any harm in posting these measurements. I should put it on my store page as well.

ANYWAYS.

Thanks for all the orders everyone!!!!! Spent 2 hours packing up all the boxes this morning. And I'm almost out of Hot Wheels after all that packing. Gonna have to go hunt for more.

Bruce
04-25-2015, 11:55 AM
This is just all speculative at this point. My guess is that--at the worst--people will need to measure their gauge openings to decide which of your lenses to order.

Based SOLELY on the most recent photos I have been able to find, I am guessing that both the new KGW gauge panels and the RS panels are made by the same company but have adopted the original KGW lens sizes and gauge ring shape.

I'm now pretty sure I have the earlier RS panel with the smaller lenses.

Of course, I could be all wet:oops: in which case I will skulk away and rejoin the board under a new alias.........(j/k)/

I think you're talking about two different products here. The RS Refine Trim rings and the RS Products version of the KG Works panel.

RS Products original gauge panels have been discontinued. The gauge hole diameters for the tach and speedo are smaller on the original RS Products panel when compared to the KGW panel. The gauge panel that RS Products still sells currently on their site is the KGW panel. The RS Refine gauge rings will fit the original miata gauge panel, and will work with the AWD gauge panels that fit onto the stock gauge panel.

Here's as close to a direct comparison as I can get. The top shot was done a few months ago, the bottom was done yesterday.

The top was taken driving around in the daylight. The bottom was done parked in a dark garage with the door open. The bottom garage shot is actually a lot more contrasty lighting conditions and is making the AR lenses work harder and look worse. It's the most difficult lighting I could figure out.

On the top shot, you can just barely see any detail in the tach. It's very blown out. The bottom shot shows some blowout, but you can still see details. But the interesting stuff is happening in the speedometer and oil gauge. You can see my face and the steering wheel reflected like a mirror. That's totally absent from the anti-reflective lenses. You notice this more in real life. Instead of being able to see yourself in the gauges, all you see is a shadowy outline.

I’m in the middle of trying to install some excellent anti-glare plastic lenses from RevLimiter for my KG Works Independent Look gauge cluster cover. Unfortunately, my KG Works panel is different than the one RevLimiter used for the installation tutorial on his website.

https://revlimiter.net/store/glass.php

Instead of little jamb nuts holding the jeweled indicator lights in place, which secure the front half of the panel to the back half so that the lenses are sandwiched in between, it appears mine uses these plastic trim rings that are superglued in place?

Has anyone else ever encountered this? Any recommendations on a solution? I’m thinking I might have to destroy the jeweled indicators in order to remove them so that I can proceed with the installation of the anti-glare lenses. Does anyone have a good source to locate suitable replacements for the jeweled indicators?
