Forging Performance with Retro JDM: Eddie’s 1995 Mazda MX-5 Miata

“The fact is that if you want a sports car, the MX-5 is perfect. Nothing on the road will give you better value. Nothing will give you so much fun. The only reason I’m giving it five stars is because I can’t give it fourteen” – Jeremy Clarkson, Top Gear BBC

Take that perspective, from one of the world’s most renowned automotive journalist, and forge that with Eddie’s passion for the “retro JDM” style and you’re in for what you see here–a car that is the pinnacle of performance, married to custom retro aesthetics. Like many stories of enthusiasts just looking to purchase a daily driver to save on gas, this turned out to be more than what Eddie had originally bargained for.

Eddie is a fan of performance, stance, and show when it comes to modifying his car. As you can see his Miata is the perfect example of this. Out of those three choices, show is his favorite category. And as you’ll see, that was his main focus when modifying the car. This car has been through many stages, but originally he thought it was complete after lowering it and slapping on some wheels.

The car was complete with wheels and suspension. That is until Eddie hit up the local car meets and realized this was just the beginning. He sold the first set of wheels he had to pick up a set of Klutch Republik wheels.

A few months after he threw on the mesh style Klutch Repulik wheels, Eddie found some very unique JDM interior pieces, Project-G G-fusers and Gwing, which he ended up picking up from Project-G.

Wheels, to most car enthusiasts, are like shoes to people who love Jordans. There’s always something better to wear. This was the same case Eddie suffered from as he now wanted BBS RM wheels one of his friends was selling. Who could blame him, BBS wheels are iconic to both performance and show car heads. But like shoes, they get old or played out, and you need something new to make you feel fresh. So Eddie ended up SSR MK2 wheels after getting rid of the BBS RMs. Then Eddie was over those when he found his “dream set” of wheels, the Star Road Glowstars made by Work Wheels. Only time will tell how long these shoes last.

After seeing some dope interiors, Eddie had a buddy redo his interior with tan square stitching. To put the icing on the cake, he put on a tan G-string top to tie the tan interior with the montego blue paint and gold center Star Road Glowstar wheels all together. Paying close attention to detail, like any show car person would, Eddie shaved the engine bay and did a wire tuck. He picked up tons of freshly polished engine bay pieces. Going beyond the aesthetics, he decided to take the performance to another level by bolting on a Kraftwerks Rotrex Supercharger, a very rare RS*R exhaust, Mishimoto radiator, HPS silicon hoses, and Garage Star cooling panels.

This 1.8L comfortably pumps out 215hp at 10psi, weighing in at slightly over 2,000lbs. With an approximate 50/50 front/rear weight balance and sporting a sick retro JDM look it’s no surprise why Eddie describes driving this MX5 Miata as unreal.

Nice to finally see some Star Road Glowstars on a Miata. I like the seats and rear parcel shelf upholstery.

Eddie is a super nice guy with an equally nice car. I think he is planning for a v8 swap this year
