After two weeks of nothing but Taco driving, today I drove the Miata to work. She complained a little (battery lost some charge due to cold local weather, some lash noice) but she started like a general.

What did you do?

(yesterday, but) I bled the brakes (they still suck), changed my slave cylinder and installed my new clutch line from 949. I also flipped the tires on my front wheels because the inside of one was real ate up. Might need to get the alignment checked.

I eventually got it by removing my brakes, disconnecting the trackrod end and giving it a good smack, 20 years old and wasnt that bad.

I fixed an interior rattle.

This extremely annoying, high pitched rattle started a few weeks ago. Between 3000 and 3200, no matter what gear or if I was accelerating or decelerating. And RIGHT in my face. I thought it was coming from the gauge area. It sounded like it. So I took Sharka apart piece by piece and test drove after every small bit. Finally, I had the gauges completely out and the rattle was still happening. I was sitting in my driveway revving while trying to find a rattle in the dash.

Then I disconnected my steering wheel for grins and the rattle stopped. Long story short, it was the horn button rattling against its own housing.

I swapped out the horn button and life is good.

I will add to the chorus of "found / fixed an annoying noise" folks... had a weird low "clunk" coming from the rear when turning, turned out one of the newly installed endlinks did not get tightened all the way down and the rear sway bar was sliding back and forth and bumping into the subframe. 5 minutes with a 14mm socket and wrench, 10 to test drive and make sure all was copacetic, done and done.

Was it an annoying ass rattle that sounded like a HT rattling and only happens on the freeway at high speeds? Because I am having this ridiculous rattle and I can't really seem to figure out what it is exactly. It's coming from the rear passenger side. I don't believe it's my HT because I have Spec Miata plates on the sides. Can't be my roll bar, that's securely bolted down. I has no clue.

Yea, it was a really fast tapping/rattling sound. It sounded like it was coming from the passenger side of the trunk. For me it happened when ever the car was in motion. Yours might be the same. Turn it on and then pop the trunk and listen for it. I just had to secure my battery down tight and the noise went away. Also check that the covers for the fuel pump and such are bolted down tight those can make the same annoying noise also.

I think I'll have Sharka on jack stands for a couple of weeks. I've got a bad alternator, so I wanna change that out. I found a coolant leak that I've been hunting for months, so I'm gonna take care of that. I might take care of an exhaust rattle. And I might install my big-pimpin' FM fan kit since I'll have the coolant system open.

Today, I put him up on the stands and removed the battery. I then spent an hour cleaning the trunk area from where the POS Mazda wet-cell battery leaked acid.

Maybe a trunk spring? Or one of the little wires in the trunk on the passenger side? Or some bolt/crud that's gotten lodged under the gas tank cover?

Just a part of my build on my '93. It'll get an extra long key made for it & when the crank bolt is torqued down it'll tie the whole assembly together so I should never have to worry about the keyway problem again.

Installed eBay coilover sleeves with Summit Racing springs (350lb front, 250lb rear)... Sleeves are a perfect fit for Bilsteins... Did a layer of duct tape in between the shock body and sleeve as an isolator, but even with just that the - no need for crappy O rings. For half the price of the Ground Control kit I'll see how it does - current plans only include pleasure drives and the occasional autox, and based on my experience with frequent rebuilds of the Tein HAs I had on my old '90 I'm not sure I want to go with a full adjustable coilover setup unless I have to.

Continued prep for paint. Got most of the chip guard off of the passenger side up to the front fender, gave the door and rear quarter a quick pass with the air sander to highlight any dings that need to be taken care of. Hoping to get it ready in time to spray during Spring Break. Have a number of subtle body mods planned that may keep me from meeting that deadline - may end up having to take another week off work around mid-April. Bummer. :P

One of the most annoying installs ever. Not looking forward to doing the driver side. I only was able to get the bottom bolt back in, not the other one, and the screw into the weatherstripping won't get tight. We'll see if it rattles when I'm driving. Might have to mess with it some more. What a pain in the ass.

^ Shoot, that looks nice, but how will water not get inside when it rains? Or cold air during the winter?

All I did today was drive my Miata in the coldest weather that the car had experienced. We had a low of 12 degrees here in Cowtown, but it was sunny so I took for a spin. My summer V rated tires felt HARD at the beginning, but even they normalize after a while. Kudos for friction!

fitftw
02-12-2012, 04:48 PM
Yeah I think I'll just sell the driver side NACA window. It does look like it would annoy the crap out of my hand during quick maneuvers. Water would only get inside if it rained horizontally. I can tape it off or put a tennis ball inside of it to block air/water during washes. My car leaks a bit anyway due to gutted doors (windows held in by clips don't seal too well against weatherstrip.) I don't mind because the interior is spartan. Easy to wipe up.

When it's below freezing I try not to drive anywhere. Makes me feel bad for the car lol :/

Ok, for the rear brakes, spin the rear wheels and turn the set screw till the caliper touches the rotor. Then turn it back 1/4 turn. It should not bind at all. Then your set. As for the Ebrake, you will have to go inside and adjust the cable at the handle.

Did you do any work to your suspension? My first thoughts are 1.) sway bar endlinks (Racing Beat tend to be loud), 2.) Drive shaft's universal joints., or 3)loose rear shocks (I have seen a couple very loose). Good luck.

It's a thud as though something's hitting the ramp/floor, and it's not consistent, it's usually if I roll off it without holding the car on the brake, hence my thoughts that it sounds as though something hitting the floor, what I ideally need is someone in a car behind to see whether anything is actually contacting. I'll have a check of those few things tomorrow though, just to be sure, thanks for the heads up.

Car got stolen five weeks ago.
Police called monday and told me they had found it! I had never thought i would ever see it again.
Went to pick it up last wednesday.

What first met me was a not-so-discrete massacre on the trunck lock.

https://img.skitch.com/20120222-drecfbhhe8k7fa532g67id4k18.jpg

The suprise that met me when we opened the trunk.

https://img.skitch.com/20120222-dwjcn14agb7wpf5qpj22sarsh3.jpg

My two extra yellow Koni's. My Koni springs and my original dampers and my tools.
A can of gas and some starter cables was the gift from the thief.

https://img.skitch.com/20120223-dhs839i5c1cqkacrykhb3tsut2.jpg

Inside they had removed the inside of the ignition, leaving it possible for me to start the car with my key.
They had stolen my head-unit and replaced it with another one (!).

All in all i'm extremely happy to have her back. The damage is minimal. A lot less than expected after beeing used for five weeks.

Nah, all kidding aside, whe are starting to have spring weather in Okieland, the problem is I have no place to put the HT, so I'll have to wait a couple of weeks when I get to rent a house, hopefully with a garage, to safely place the HT.

I wrapped my doorbars in Xpel to prevent them from getting chipped and scratched from the belts or getting in and out. It was an easy install. Xpell is like 3M clear bra or those clear covers you can buy for your smart phone. It's shinier than I wanted, but it's not a big deal. A few MTB friends recommended it.
