The Grand Canyon is a 4 hour trip (one way) from Las Vegas. The change in landscapes is amazing.

Rogue knows and has driven Route 66 more than anyone I know. I drove a little of it in Arizona. I-40 pretty much shadows it from OKC westward.

Would you recommend arriving LV through Death Valley and using 95 the last bit or straight ahead on 15?

Tempting to go visiting Grand Canyon. Its a kind in opposite direction of there we are going from LV. :)

Thanks for all the good advices. So much to see so little time.

Hmmm...I would probably just drive straight through to LV on the 15. It's a fairly long drive by freeway anyways. You will cross through valleys where the mountains on either side look close, but really aren't. Depending on the day you leave to drive for LV, traffic can be a real bear. Essentially, there is a steady stream of cars that leave LA for Vegas on Friday afternoon, then back again on Sunday night. The police patrol that stretch pretty well, so don't go too crazy on the speeding. I had a terrific drive from Vegas back to LA in my NB back in 2012. I left in late morning and the traffic was light, the top was down and the weather was about 20-24*C the entire way with sun and just a few clouds. It was in the spring so the desert was a little more green than usual. I enjoyed it.

I have made that trip a lot by car and it can be boring in spots, but I always think of the geology of the landscape as I drive through and how it was formed, settlers moving east to west during the 1800s, or people making east to west roadtrips to California and it always made me think it was a lot more interesting than people generally thought it was.

While in Vegas, a good side trip is the Shelby American HQ. They have a nice visitor's center.

On a non-car-guy subject, the High Roller is fun...if you go I suggest the "Bar Car".
