2014 Mazda Miata - First Look
Mazda looks to pare weight from its next Miata roadster.

http://www.roadandtrack.com/future-cars/first/2014-mazda-miata/

Mazda is getting ready to overhaul the Miata with a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine and a more muscular exterior. A new 1.3-liter engine using Mazda’s fuel-saving SkyActiv technology is going to power this fourth-generation Miata roadster. The engine should be significantly lighter and more efficient than the 2.0-liter 4-cylinder that does duty in the Miata range here in the U.S.

This rendering of the 2014 Miata hints that Mazda will keep the overall proportions of the current model. Narrower headlights and a larger grille provide a modest front makeover. A sharp character line extends from the headlights back along the sides of the car, before tapering off near the door handles. It’s a clean shape, one that’s a little less delicate than before but not overwrought with details.

Back to Basics.

This represents a return to form for the simple Miata, which first went on sale more than 20 years ago. The new 2014 Miata should shed a few pounds, thanks to the use of lightweight materials in the chassis—along with that smaller engine. Mazda is making a big deal about SkyActiv, and we were impressed with the technology when fitted to the updated Mazda3 compact.

A high compression ratio, direct injection, and reduced internal friction will help endow the lighter SkyActiv-equipped Mazda3 with better power than one might initially expect, and fuel economy (when compared to the 2.0-liter inline-4) is boosted by approximately 15 percent. For the record, the Mazda3 SkyActiv sedan returns an impressive 40 mpg on the highway (EPA) when equipped with the 6-speed automatic. A 6-speed manual is also available.

Look for the 2014 Mazda Miata to offer the same gearboxes. A manual soft-top should continue, and a power-operated folding hardtop will likely join the range at some point. There is a possibility that Mazda will offer further details about this all-new 2014 Miata at the Geneva Auto Show in March.

This design works better here, IMO.

The proportions just look better to my eyes.

Notice the front end is very similar to how most of the current Mazdas look right now. So it would not surprise me if it looks similar to this design.

The front end needs to be killed with fire. They say they are getting back to their original roots ad making it lighter ... That front end and those curves look to futuristic at least for what I interpreted.

I don't care if that thing only weighs 1000lbs it still looks heavy. I for one don't think this is the ND. I really think that we won't see it until later. I think Mazda is trying to keep this a secret for a while, but I could be very wrong.

Hmmmmmmmmm, not sure about grill, gill, and led lights. Looks a little like the concept designs for the new VW scirocco.

When I saw that watermark, a wave of ease washed over me, assuring me the car wouldn't look like that.

the curves and the slashed body creases are clashing. It's the unholy offspring of a Miata and a Z4...

Nuke it from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

Kill it with fire!

We all know Mazda is gonna do what Dodge did with the new Challenger. Refine the NAs sexy good looks.

I lol'd in agreement to these.

With the NAIAS falling flat, the automotive press is looking for good stories. Mazda is gonna keep its cards close to the chest on this design and they are right to do so.

It's funny they never design for front license plates even though they're required everywhere. It's always an ugly tack-on as if it only occured to them after the car rolls off the assembly line.

Actually, the germans do a fairly good job integrating the front plates with a modular-type design.

It would be easier if there was a standard for plates, but there isn't. Look at the front fascia on modern cars, then consider the size of the tool needed to mold it. It is an expensive set of molds just for one. Now consider the variety of front plates across the world. Pricey.

Actually I just remembered that Corvettes have a molded space in the front bumper for a license plate. If a state doesn't require one, there's a nice Corvette logo'd cover in place.

I propose a new global standard of no front license plate at all.

I am so glad Georgia doesn't require front license plates! It absolutely KILLS the look of cars. I hate them!

Another Mazda designed for the European Market; looks like a BMW.
I'm sure they will sell 2 or 3 in the states and the rest will sit on dealer lots.
If that's really it, the timeless look of the NA is gone forever.
They are totally missing the retro band wagon.
I hope can only hope they do not forget the LED marker lights.

FIXED that for you

It's funny they never design for front license plates even though they're required ALMOST everywhere. ...............

Not here in Florida, or our neighbors in Georgia. haaha :fab:

You guys are missing the point on the whole front mount plate thing.

Key words in that whole article was 1.3L

For fucks sake mazda, the only acceptable 1.3 in any roadster better go brap brap brrrrrap brap brap brap

I sometimes wonder... does your insurance price rise depending on displacement? (I'd guess not when you tend to stick 5l V8s in everything)

iRoadster
01-19-2012, 04:05 PM
Not here in the states, unfortunately. Pretty much every kid here thinks they're entitled to a V8 truck as soon as they learn how to drive.

George
01-19-2012, 04:11 PM
then I get it why you can't appreciate engine, that will save you couple hundred $ a year on insurance lol

But I agree with Skinny... if it has to be a 1.3, it should better be a wankel

Im excited to see what the 1.3 turbo will kick out. It would be a shame for Mazda to all of a sudden break the tradition of the mx5 and drop a rotary in it

One thing's for sure.....insurance rates should drop for this car because only a thief on crack would steal it.

Well, I guess that's why they make vanilla and chocolate. I didn't buy a NA and I wouldn't buy a NC but I would trade my NB in on that one.

ThatWhiteNA
01-21-2012, 12:39 AM
The RX series isn't dead. Mazda said so themselves. Rotary production is on hiatus until which time as Mazda can develop a rotary engine that doesn't return 2mpg. They will be ending RX8 production after this year.

And there's nothing wrong with that.

My NA does both and still returns an average of 35mpg when I'm, you know, driving on public roads surrounded by landscape, other cars and pedestrians.

True. I guess the idea driven behind it is what I don't like. I get the lightweight sports car. But I can't even imagine the sound of a 1.3L 4 banger when you step on it. :/ The sound of a geo steppin on it, is what comes to mind. Which isn't something I look forward to.

I dont think so. I was talking to a guy at mazda about rotaries and he said their done for america since they cant meet emission regulations anymore. I know that their redesigning them in other countries tho.
