My Miata will actually be back on the road this spring, and I need some good mountain hooning tires. Are 185/60R14 Dunlop Z2s my best bet? Are the star specs worth another $15-$20 a tire? are there other decent performance options that I may not be aware of?

I would go with the Star Specs. Just a really great tire, even in the rain. Otherwise, max hoonage in a tire that small, Nitto NT-01 or Toyo 888 (205-55-14 r-comp tires) if rain is only a minor concern.

:)

Glad to see you back!

thanks. My car's been parked for 3 years.

Rain is little concern.. The NT01Rs shure are tempting, but this car will probably never see a track besides drag strip. Will be driven on nice days only, 5k miles /year at most.

I DD'd my NA on r-comps. It was really entertaining and amazing. The compound can blast the car behind the wheel wells a little, but if you have mud flaps, no big deal. :)

If the car is gonna be used for daily too i would just go with something like the star specs or another extreme performance tire just so you wouldn't have to constantly be buying new sets of tires. Was a big deciding factor for me when I was buying tires.

EDIT: well then again i am poor and in college haha

This is true, but tires age and harden if not exercised frequently. Life is fleeting, burn rubber and enjoy the ride? ;)

I've heard very good things about the Star Specs as well! Can't wait to finally see your car on the road!

Even your BMW won't be able to catch it. Its OK, remember God still loves you (j/k - but he really does)

I can't wait either.. I think I will go with the z2s, after I fry the bald all seasons that have it rolling now :)

The BMW is slow (well it feels super fast to me since I'm used to the Miata). Isn't your car all motor? I haven't seen pictures of your car in forever! Get that thing on the road!

Another vote for the ZII Star Specs. I just upgraded from the 14" Z1 Star Specs and they are significantly better than those, which were great tires in their own right. A little bit of road noise from the tread pattern but they are impressively comfortable and have excellent grip, both a big improvement over the ZIs. They have great manners on and off the track.

Hopefully they will last as long as the ZIs did, as my tires tend to get hard before they wear out due to not driving the car all the time and the ZIs maintained their grip pretty well even after a couple years. Much better than Azenis or R-Compounds do. Also didn't really seem to heatcycle out from track use.

How's the grip and handling of the ZII Star Specs on wet roads?

Excellent. Surprising, even.
