Need some help! I have a 2000 Mazda Miata special edition. It runs pretty well in dry weather, and I can even drive it in the rain. Until I hit a water puddle, then, within a few seconds the car just stops running. Can anyone help me with this situation? I have been going crazy trying to figure out what is doing this.

Does it start up after it dies?

Do you have an aftermarket air intake setup?

I can't think of what sensors are down there. Mini does the speedo thing when it is wet, I really should fix that.

It does start up after it dries out some. But what is mind boggling is I can drive it in a downpour and it is fine, unless I hit a pothole or puddle of water. Then it just shuts off.

It still has it's original intake.

I had water getting into my #1 plug well because my plug wire wasn't sealing properly. Car ran like crap in the wet until I replaced the plug wires and that spark plug.

Plug on the right (obviously) is the one I replaced.

Is your alternator submerging in the water maybe?

I don't think it is, but I will look at it the next time it does it.

My 2000 had that speedo issue and the fix is really worth it. It took maybe 20 minutes and some of that was finding my dang soldering iron!

Crank sensor. I bet there is gunk around it or you aren't running a belly tray.

Part of the belly tray was torn before we had gotten the car.

Just found out that when it is sitting in the driveway and it rains, it won't start up until something dries out.... Ugh...
