Here is a combination review of a few old articles I found about the M2 Cars, thought you guys would find it interesting.

M2-INCORPORATED

"Uncompromising standards and craftsmanship are our development theme."

http://youtu.be/FzwaEYOndog

Founded in November 1991, M2, also known as "Mazda Too" was Mazda's new off-line planning, nichehouse, Research & Development company (back in the early 90's). The M2 Crew employees had noble intentions -- creating nichemobiles derived from Mazda's volume products. Although M2's basic mission involved focusing on the "soft" aspects of vehicle design in an attempt to create more specifically targeted niche variants, the changes to the off-line cars would go well beyond mere cosmetics.

Heading the M2 operation was "Masakatsu Kato", original father of the Miata (Eunos Roadster) in Japan, as well as creator of several Mazda concept vehicles. Kato-san was assisted by Hirotaka Tachibana, development engineer responsible for the superb dynamics of the FC (second-generation RX-7) and the NA Roadster (Miata MX-5). M2-Corp which was based out of Tokyo, M2 was a 100% owned subsidiary of Mazda and it was closed by Mazda in 1995, but not before creating some really sweet vehicles. Mazda kept a similar program going with Mazdaspeed, and then in the late 90's Mazdaspeed was absorbed to Mazda in the subsidiary company in Mazda Auto Tokyo.

M2-1001 "Clubman" Roadster AKA the Cafe Racer (Dec-91) Limited 1/300
M2-CORP released the M2-1001 Roadster in December 1991. It was a Limited Edition Roadster variant that was a short production run of only 300 units, in a special edition Blue/Black Mica Paint, with a base sticker price of $26,000.

Prospective buyers were required to show up in person at M2's Tokyo headquarters to "register" for a "chance" to place an order for this extremely limited Roadster.

Here is a photo of the M2 Incorporated Building in Tokyo, what a grand looking site to see this must have been, sadly no longer owned by M2 or Mazda though. The architecture on this building was just as wild as the cars that came out of here.

This upscale M2-1001 Eunos Roadster was M2's first "turn-key" race ready offering, here is a list of some of the goodies that made it so popular. In addition to the functional front airdam with integrated fog lamps, it came standard with extras like; vintage aero mirrors, 4-point rollbar, Vintage gauge cluster, Fixed Back Bucket Seats, Polished 3-Spoke MOMO Veloce Steering Wheel, stiffer suspension package with M2 Specific codes, Polished aluminum strut brace, upgraded exhaust by HKS Japan, Aftermarket Intake system, a Tuned 1.6L motor with new aggressive pistons, radical camshaft, lightweight flywheel, LSD with Cooling Intake, manual rack steering, manual windows, (A/C was optional) racing pedals, Centerless Console, with matching Shortened Radio Bezel, a retro looking aluminum gas filler cap, a more aggressive wheel & tire package (15x6 panasport rally rims) and a rear spoiler (which became standard for the R-Pkg). The performance changes made to the Roadster would bump the horsepower to 130hp @ 6500rpm, and 109ft/lb of torque @ 5500rpm. Once released it was so popular that people were paying up to $34,000 to get there hands on the M2-1001 Roadster!

M2-1002 "Vintage" Roadster (Nov-92) Limited 1/300

M2-CORP released it's second Roadster in late 1992, with a sightly different front bumper, it had all the same goodies as the previous 1001 Roadster, but offered a more unique looking interior option, the Ivory Leather interior with wood accents like Brake handle and shifter. And was also limited to 300 units produced. This one did not do as well as the 1001, so Mazda Japan got stuck with some left over interiors. Which later were later installed in the Tokyo Limited, and only 40 of those made it to the streets of Japan.

M2-1028 "Street Competition" Roadster AKA Clubman-2 (FEB-94) Limited 1/300

M2-CORP released it's third Roadster in early 1994, based on the original "Jinba Ittai" concept made by Toshihiko Hirai. This was the track ready Competition Roadster. (The USA got a simpler version known as the R-Package. ) Offered in Chaste White or Brilliant Black only, this Roadster used the new 1.8L powerplant with upgraded pistons, and camshafts, and other similar goodies as the previous 1001, & 1002. However this Roadster had an output of close to 140hp!! It included 14" Eunos Factory Rims with a unique gunmetal paint with polished lip, this same lighter hollowspoke was found on some of the US-Spec Miatas. Some of the features here were a new set of lightweight side mirrors, MOMO Steering Wheel, Centerless console, Racing seats, racing tow hook, Lightweight Aluminum Shock Tower Brace, a set of front & rear lower lip spoilers, (R-Package) a newly designed (Aluminum) "Duck-Tail" trunklid with integrated spoiler (the M2-1028 trunklid was made from aluminium and weighed only 7.7-lbs. very light weight from original lid 15.5-lbs. ). Similar design used on the NB's. Also came with a 6-point rollcage, but no soft-top (instead, you got a tarp that stretched over the cage). With optional FRP Hardtop with plexiglass rear window for more weight savings coming in at only 19-lbs.

M2-1003 "Junior" Roadster

The model 1003 was a simplified and affordable version of the MX5 Roadster named the "Junior" Roadster. Similar to the Austin Healey Sprite of years past, it was put forward as a proposal to Mazda Headquarters Japan, but sadly never released as a production car. They only made 1 of these in a Dark Red Mica Paint with lots of S-Limited aka 93LE red interior bits. The 1003 Roadster was later taken back to M2-Corp HQ and transformed into the M2-1008 Roadster Coupe.

https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2899/14419781255_1783165b49_o.jpg

I managed to find this interior shot of the M2-1003 Roadster in a beat up issue of M2 Magazine, as well as the M2-1023 AWD Hatchback.

M2-1006 "CobraSter" V-6 Powered Concept Car

By far the wildest Tachibana creation was the M2-1006 "CobraSter", as it was referred to by Mazda's insiders. This was the Mazda version of the infamous Shelby Cobra of the Sixties, fitted with the Mazda 929's Quad-Camshaft, 24-Valve V6 under the hood. The rear subframe was ditched and instead M2 Engineers used the rear subframe and suspension from the Mazda RX-7 for added strength. The front tires were 225/50-16's, and the tucked under the bulging rear fenders they used 245/45-16's tires.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7087/7377257752_c88694b33c_c.jpg

The intention was to produce a "limited" run of these mini terrors using the 2.5-liter version of the Mazda V-6, and the market reaction was very good, however since there was so many modifications to this car from the standard model Mazda decided to give up on any ideas of putting this car into production.

There was only 2 of these cars ever produced by M2 Incorporated.

M2-1007 "Sedan" Roadster Concept Car

The Model 1007 was a 4-door sedan version, , this was envisioned to capture the post-MX-5/Miata Market. There was only (1) full sized car produced, and another 1/5 scale version that was produced as a model for review by Mazda.

M2-1008 "Coupe" Roadster Concept Car

Another one-off project from the M2 design team was their version of "Coupe" derivative of the original theme. This model was designed with a more rigid body, and refined aerodynamics. The exterior of this car was a more radical design than the US-Based California "M-Coupe" which remain more true to the Miata principle. The 1008 had a more "Italianesque" design with its truncated cut-off rear section. There was one one of these produced as a "running" prototype model for presentation.

This was previously the 1003 Junior roadster but that car was transformed into this coupe when M2 dropped the 1003 concept

There was also a US Version of the Coupe called the "M-Coupe" based on the NA Body, as well as a prototype made in Canada called the "F010 Coupe" based off an NA using a modified hatch from the Mazda, either RX-7 or MX-3.

Not sure, from the drawing I have, that this was really a "Roadster sedan". If anything, it had the same shape as a RX8.

Dang, I didn't realize they raised it vertically... thought it was just a flared kit (horizontal). It's like an NA and NB had a baby and they inflated it a little bit  I love it!

Love the M2 1006. I've only recently become aware of the car. I guess since there were only two of them made that makes sense. I'd love to know how it feels to drive with that 929 six cylinder.

Does anybody have information on the wheels? I believe they are 16" and I'm sure decently wide. I've seen a few wheels that look similar but I don't know who makes a three piece eight spoke wheel or if they are all one-off custom makes.

Problem with that M2 and my 93LE is that they are both so rare, and original it would be a shame to molest them with parts like a want to. :teehee:

Dandy

No molestation, oh no. Just thinking if you were going to have one collector car, an unmolested M2 might trump an unmolested LE. Is there any demand for a US 93LE in the motherland? The M2-1001 listed for sale above seems to be one of the nicest examples I've seen.

I know you like the fuel lid. This one comes with a roadster attached.

You don't need parts if you are not driving it. Meguire's Quick Wax and a soft towel will work on both RHD and LHD roadsters.

Is it missing a serialized data plate on the door by the side view mirror?

Well, that entire passenger door is wrong. The (dented) mirror was fitted to to the stock location, and no evidence of the more forward passenger side mirror (the reason there is a numbered plate on the doors of the M2 cars is to cover up the standard mirror location. This particular 1001 came with Dunlop track tyres, and evidence of overspray everywhere. It had been in a smash and the door replaced. The smash seems to have been bad enough to crack the frame of the bucket seat.

In Japan, the M2s seem to be a mix of barely driven garage queens and cars that have been raked around a track all their lives.

My old M2-1002 now lives in Italy, alongside the other ex-UK M2-1001 and the only roadworthy ex-UK M2-1001.....

Unfortunately, I have a sneaking suspicion who ended up with the dog of a 1001. He's not a person well respected in the MX5 community....

There is a TDR 1001R nose for sale on Yahoo Japan Auctions, and I remembered some pics that I have of the roadster itself. It was produced by D-Technique, and it was their version of what an M2 Incorporated NB would look like. There were two different style front fascia available, and the interior styling was similar to the M2 1001/1028 models. Even though D-Tech is now defunct, some of the parts are still available through Murakami Motors, and probably a few other Japanese vendors.
Although not an M2 roadster, it is still a cool looking interpretation.

That's the problem with eBay Motors vehicle auctions - they're non-binding on both parties (a few other categories are like this as well). It's basically just an advertising service not much different than AutoTrader. This worked to my advantage on one occasion where I was a serious buyer but auctionsniper had a network failure that prevented them from placing a bid for me. I contacted the seller after the auction had ended and offered them more than the winning bid (still less than my maximum bid would have been) and he agreed to sell it to me. And why not? I was local and offering more money than the eBay auction winner and there was nothing in the TOS that required the seller or high bidder honor the auction.

I found this blurb about the funky M2 building in Tokyo:

Dating from 1991 but evoking a much earlier era, the M2 building in Tokyo's Setagaya ward was designed by Kengo Kuma for M2 Incorporated (“Mazda Too”), a former niche-product R&D company owned by Mazda Motor Corporation. Perhaps they should have done some research development of what constitutes attractive design. In any case, all's well that ends well: M2 Inc closed in 1995 and the building is now used as a funeral hall.

M2(ish) 1002 knockoff(?) on Buyee. 27000 kilometers, correct color, mirrors, front bumper and badges... but center console/tombstone, gauge cluster, and other items have been swapped. I wonder if it's an actual M2, or if they've simply bolted a few bits on in an effort to pass one off as such.

Definitely looks more like a M2-1002 tribute car based on a standard NA6. Too many details are wrong, most notably the seats, door panels, carpets, dash, steering wheel, instrument panel, radio console, etc. Reproduction M2 data plates are not that difficult to obtain. Like all used car purchases, trust but verify. Pre-purchase inspection, thorough review of ownership history, records, etc. to prove the provenance.

I wonder what it would cost to freight a car from Japan? For less than the cost of a new Club model, you could buy a ~7000 mile M2-1028 with hardtop... minty fresh. If a moderator could grab the photos and save them here, might be helpful!

The caption says it was a design study, and it seems to also have been known as the Familia Sport 4 (maybe also Super 4, but could be a mistype on the article). It also seems to share a lot with the M2 1005, another Familia based car. Neither appears to have ever made it to production. Could be way off here as well, but it also seems like the 1005 was planned to be Mazda's Group B entry (or at least the homologation base for it), while the 1023 was supposed to be the road going car that you could get number plates for.

Crazy how much M2 designed haha. I thought I knew a decent amount about M2 with just the 1001, 1002, 1006, 1028, and the 1015. But there are way more than just those apparently.

Edit: here's a good list of M2 models with basic descriptions for each in Japanese- https://blogs.yahoo.co.jp/roman_holiday417/64221200.html

and here's my translation

M2 1009 - urban SUV
M2 1010 - Front half: Familia Astina、Back half: Familia sedan based sports pickup
M2 1011 - Eunos Cosmo base
M2 1012 - MPV base

Nah, it's one of these atrocities. Why anyone would remove the original and replace it with this is beyond me.

The original 1001 is well documented in this thread. Main hoop goes down to the floor behind the seats and the support legs to through the rear shelf into the trunk. This just...sits on top of your carpet.

ALL the current M2 parts listed are repro's; the door handles, the console- it does look nice though, as well as all of chevy1982jp's stuff.
But in chevy1982jp's defense he DOES put out some cool aluminum stuff.

Either I'm missing something, or it's lacking the surround... not pictured and no mention of it. Already at $2900US. Crazy stuff.

For that much money you can have several CNC machined from billet aluminum, originality be damned.

THAT is why the prices for original M2 parts has gone up so much since things hit about the 20 year mark.

Anyone know a part # or source for the M2 1028 tombstone side plastic push-pin retainer clip thing-a-ma-jigs? There was a seller selling them on Buyee/Yahoo JP a while back, but I never picked up any, and now wish I had. Getting close to installing my 1028 console.

No, but if you find out, please let me know. I’ve never used them on mine. To be honest I thought that it used trim screws there and I didn’t want to put new holes in my dashboard so I’ve never put anything there.

Would something like this work?

I know it is not genuine but if you found a small enough push clip it would look great.

I’m sure there is. But it isn’t me. For one, I’ve never liked the idea of drilling the factory body and riveting the fuel lid base to the car. Second, I don’t think it’s unique or special enough to justify the expense. Personally, I think the Zoom Engineering and Runabout Type 1 lids offer similar visual interest for only 15% the cost. If I could acquire a carbon fiber M2-1001 style fuel lid like Morizo’s M2-1028R I’d totally do that instead.

I agree wholeheartedly about drilling a dozen holes into the bodywork above my trunk. I do really like the idea of a single gas-cap, though. If someone were to make an M2-style threaded filler cap with a Zoom-style rivet-less base, I'd pay good money for one. Not $1500, though!

Nah that was back the late 1990s to early 2000, I was saying man I could have bought an M2 fuel lid for $300 but was too expensive back then lol

but for that price would rather buy an M2 Bumper

M2 1028 mirror bases for 50,000yens. So, around another $200 for the Vitaloni mirror shells/mirrors to make a set of M2 1028 mirrors. Pricey indeed. They will probably sell though.

My original bases are and these look to be. Just a little pitted around the screw holes.

I didn't realize the bases were aluminum. I thought they were plastic :). Makes sense though, the rollbars are aluminum also. The m2 1028 half cage is so damn light!

Complete, albeit rough, M2-1028 on Buyee/Yahoo JP. I wish I had the contacts and resources, I'd scavenge all the M2 parts and ship them here. The seats, trunk and hardtop alone are worth the opening bid. The wheel, center console, gauge cluster, mirrors and hood would all just be bonus items! My guess, the body is crusty... just looking at the rust that is present in a few pictures. But, at 1/300... might be worth a body-swap.

Edit: It just occurred to me, no 3rd brake-light. The trunk is a replacement already. What's the hood?

1002 gauge cluster in excellent condition on Buyee at the moment (ends 3 Feb, 2024). At $2500US, it's a bit rich for me. But man, what a beautiful piece. I'd argue the best looking of the M2 clusters (which is why I have a RS Products overlay that's similar and a set of Revlimiter 1002 faces to install, eventually).
