We also removed the exhaust mani and air box, and mapped the cold side piping. Not bad for about 3 hours.

Ps. Got this thing I gave a sneak peek to. My life would be a lot easier if people in California would just ship stuff. This made its way to Formula Drift Long Beach, then traveled in Dean Kearney's huge trailer, where it was picked up by a friend at Formula Drift Atlanta.

It's a terrible pic, and I'm not sure how I feel about it, but it was already painted to match my car.

I have never drilled a hole in an oil pan. A few years ago I wouldn't have attempted it. It was scary.

Lots of grease, a nice pilot hole, and more grease, and we have a hole.

There was a problem. We drilled too big. Drilled 1/2, when the fitting I was given was 3/8. Thankfully we found one locally at a performance shop, crisis adverted.

After some tapping and more grease.

The car has been down for about two months, and we've done a lot.

Install Torsen
Install full exhaust
Install Garage Star fender braces
Install MkTurbo kit
Install oil lines
Drill pan for drain
Swap valve covers
Add Joyfast bolts
Install boost gauge
Extend IAT wire
Install Zoom side winners
Had pipes welded and turbo ported by Wrench Masters LLC
Had hot side ceramic coated by Engine Armor Coatings
Installed Garage Star tow hook
Installed rear mud flaps
And I'm sure I'm missing stuff.

Yes, that's the next planned purchase. Just determining what I want in a fair price range.

This next purchase deserves its own post.

Five or six years ago, Scrat was one of my largest inspirations. I loved that car. But I was young and knew that a car of that quality was unattainable.

I specifically remember a post of something as small as hose clamps, but they were interesting, great looking, and highly functional. I wanted them. But it never happened.

Now that I'm building a quality Miata, I needed new clamps for my radiator install. I had looked at several options, but something sparked that 6 year old memory, and I tracked down those clamps. And now I have them.

http://i.imgur.com/OTHq2dcl.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/LEZtcCbl.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/mnK2W7ql.jpg

They are pretty nifty. They're only 9mm wide, and they are a stepless non-binding design that also has a constant tension spring, as well as locking tabs that dictate the clamp size range.

Oetiker makes them, and these are their "178" clamps.

No way they'd settle a claim. They were packed horribly. I've been waiting for the seller to offer a solution, but I'll be posting pics soon if not.

The panels were put in a cut down TV box with no additional padding whatsoever. And the door straps were included with the sale are missing.

The worst part was the door straps were nowhere to be found. The seller claimed they were in the box. But there were no signs of holes or retaping, and if those little pieces above were there I have a hard time believing the straps could have fallen out.

Well one thing I've always wanted for the Rodders was center caps. I had looked all over but never found any that worked and hadn't had time to get them custom made.

I posted a pic of my car on reddit, and someone posted their NB on Rodders. As I looked closer, I saw center caps. I immediately messaged him, to find that he made them out of aluminum. I was somehow able to talk him into making me a set. They need repainted before installing, but they look great combined with Adam's logos he made for me.

That'll do it.

I'm unsure of Mustang's correction factors, but I know others can correct to several industry standards (e.g. Standard, SAE, JIS, DIN, or EEC).

Hmm...I wonder what turbo I'll have to go to to hit 300. My previous Greddy TD04 setup dyno'd at 238hp/255 lb-ft and floated between 16-18 lbs of boost.

My end goal is a daily 300 hp on the new, built engine. I hope to be at a similiar power to weight ratio as my buddy's 2013 Corvette Grand Sport when we hit Sebring.

Just a guess. Your Grand Sport buddy likes a Shock Top and settles for Taco Bell when there are wonderful, authentic tacos out there? States all the Miati ( still sticking with this as the plural ) around him want to boost to stay in his contrail? And posts every pic he can in his Siggy as a video GIF or Avatar, except for a shot of himself.

He must think himself to be one of those Japanese condiments, too.

Actually, no. He has a 99 NB as his daily driver and a Toyota Matrix AWD for bad weather. He opted for the Corvette when he couldn't get any more out of his 370Z on the track. He's cheap and lives for monthly track days.

Sorry to jack the thread, but Lobo is making good numbers, especially for a stock motor.

A bunch of car with 2860 Turbos are running darn close or over 300HP, with a 1.8 engine. I don't know of anyone with a 1.6 or 1.7 making 300HP.

Glad they arrived safe and sound, Corey! :drinkto: Actually the whole kit came from Scrat, which Adam777 and brontasaurus bought and parted out.

I personally would upgrade the bulbs before installing with like some Sylvania SilverStar bulbs, kept meaning too but never got around to it. Imo, the biggest pain was getting the headlight lids adjusted. Just fyi, to remove the whole headlight frame you just need to remove the motors that are secured with x3 10mm bolts and then x4 14mm bolts that hold the frames in.

You have no idea how much time you saved by buying this setup vs new or someone else's since the harness(MUCH better than the wiring originally included from Cobalt) is pnp(just hook up the x2 12v wires to the 12v supply on the fuse box under the hood and x2 ground wires, plug in the bulbs and that is it) and the modified frames ready to bolt in.

Of course I had to modify the headlight frames, so it took me probably 2-3hrs to install. It will probably take you half that or less. If you have any questions hit me up via email or IG and I can give you my cell number for quicker/easier communication.

I really hope you enjoy them as much as I did! :D

I have the same set from Toolman's wrecked 93LE. One light bucket was slightly bent, but easily fixed. However, it didn't come with the arms or the acuating hardware, so I had to ghettofab up some of my own. Maybe now is a good time to do RevLimiter's high beam mod and fashion some better fastereners.

I have also been thinking of going to LED bulbs once I find some with the appropriate lumen output.

I ran into a pretty big wall when it came to doing the passenger side. The last bolt. My intercooler piping makes it a tight fit, and there's a lip that makes it impossible to get a straight wrench on it, and it's too tight to get a ratchet on it. Removing the pipe means removing my bumper and fender so I'm trying to avoid that.

I was able to get a gearwrench on it but it rounded. So now I'm looking to borrow a friend's EZ Red wrench in order to try it again when I'm not aggravated.

I have to give it to both CSF and Flyin' Miata. FM's kit was complete, and had great instructions. The CSF is just beautiful. The pairing is something I think would be hard to top.

Also. Turbos make jobs much harder. I had to take the turbo off the manifold to get one of the hoses off. It was such a pain. But so worth it.

Been a long time since I've updated. But I'm alive.

Lobo currently is not. But hopefully will be next week.

About 4 months ago I broke up with my ex. Unfortunately I had to live with her for a little over 3 months due to the lease. I didn't think it took a toll on me but it definitely did. I became a recluse, and withdrew myself from nearly everyone and everything.

About a month ago, I was giving a girl I was dating (now my girlfriend) a ride for the first time in Lobo, and for the first time since I've owned it, it broke down. The alternator gave up. A good friend brought a spare battery, and I limped it to his house.

And there Lobo has sat since then. I was too busy with my move to even think about working on it.

But today I went and had the reunion, and removed the culprit.

http://i.imgur.com/8VNDCHk.jpg

The alternator was dropped off at a shop to be rebuilt and will be picked up next week, and Lobo will be brought to its new home.

I must give a very late but large thank you to Peter for this great housewarming gift. Last night was my first night staying in the new house, and it was on display.

I got Lobo home. And then the next day I noticed that my driveway had a leak spot I didn't remember being there.

So I looked under and noticed something pretty not great.

http://i.imgur.com/Ya9xHpcl.jpg

I'm missing a majority of my trans bolts and clearly leaking quite bad.

Slave shows bad leaking as well.
http://i.imgur.com/54kAmbHl.jpg

So this is where Lobo sits.
http://i.imgur.com/WFwYw1kl.jpg

I've pulled out the driveshaft and exhaust. At this point it's just removing the rest of the trans bolts, the starter, slave, and PPF bolts and dropping it. I've just been busy doing other stuff.

I'm assuming when we did the clutch job, we forgot to tighten the trans since we did clutch/exhaust/oil drain/turbo/diff all in one day. And I think the vibration caused the rear main to go, and maybe my trans seal too. I won't know until I actually pull it.

But before I work on it some more I want an organized garage. So I bought some shelves.

Before:(Note I had already built and filled two smaller shelves at this point.)

Currently: (Only built the shelves, haven't organized.)

Alright. The other day I disconnected everything, and got the engine ready to pull. Just was waiting on a hoist.

I don't plan on taking this out again for a long time, so I didn't find it worth buying a hoist. So I had to wait for a friend to lend me one. I had at least 7 people willing to loan me theirs, but only one had means of delivering it to me. I also borrowed an engine stand from another friend. There's something to be said about great friends.

So as I awaited the hoist, I spent my day fishing with a friend from out of town.

https://i.imgur.com/3YFIcVLl.jpg

And then I got the magical text and headed to the garage to get things done.

All that had to be removed was the two motor mount nuts, and fuel lines. I had gotten everything else done ahead of time. It's pretty crazy how far I've come in the world of DIY mechanics. Sidenote: My grandpa passed when I was 14, just before he planned to start sharing all of his mechanic knowledge. I think he'd be proud of what I've been able to do in his absence.

Ahh ok. I always forget which one.

So I guess I had a leak from my front crank as well as my exhaust cam seal. Replaced all 3 with OEM seals, and also installed the 949 Qmax. A few steps closer to putting it back in.

Engine looks the part! What's that oil pan coating? Asking out of pure curiosity, as powder coating powders are typically polymer-based which is bad for heat dissipation

Long overdue update.

I took the alternator to a local Miata shop, and they couldn't get it out so they just replaced the front housing.

We got the engine all buttoned up and mounted the transmission. I had to get a tap set because the bottom holes on the new oil pan were all gummed up.

http://i.imgur.com/53rH1p4l.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/PTfr5JDl.jpg

We were able to drop it in and get most of it bolted up and double checked our work. I also replaced the clutch master and slave since they both showed many signs of wear.

This is where we left off. I could do the rest alone.
http://i.imgur.com/T82z06hl.jpg

The next day I added the radiator and fans, filled all the fluids, and prepared to start it.

I had it hooked to jumper cables and got ready to turn the key, and hooked up my laptop.

And then I heard a ridiculous buzzing noise and also saw fuel spraying.

Hopefully an easy fix...

Good thing you caught the fuel leak before you started it.
Last month I bought a fire extinguisher and I have a seat bracket on the way.

Do you have a fire extinguisher for your start-up?

Corifto
04-22-2018, 09:20 AM
I do not have an extinguisher, but need to get one.

So to pick up where we left off.

I got in touch with Nigel from FlowForce and he sent me new o rings. I put the injectors in without lube so I will be redoing them. But I wanted to figure out the buzzing.

I had heard that low batteries act weird, so I bought a new battery from Mazda, and cleaned all of my engine grounds and modified the trunk negative cable since it was fraying.

I unplugged the Circuit Opening Relay and the injector harness and hooked my laptop up and turned the key.

No more buzzing and TunerStudio read the MS fine, and I was able to recalibrate my TPS.

But now I had an issue with my Coolant sensor. It was bouncing from 0 to 180.

https://youtu.be/7v7mRBOnqkY

So I left for the day. I came back and verified that all of my grounds were fine and thought maybe the sensor was bad.

Due to the clearance of the reroute block, and the sensor being blocked by my hose clamp, I needed to remove the clamp. Well it's tight back there. I couldn't get a socket back there and I only had a 6mm mini wrench. I loosened it as much as I could blindly for what felt like forever and gave up in search of a 6mm gear wrench.

After searching I found Craftsman had a 6 piece set for $29 locally. I went and saw it but as I was walking out saw a 20pc GearWrench set for $49, and I even found a $10 off $50 coupon. 20 gear wrenches for $43.

http://i.imgur.com/yVu2PORl.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/UBiaOBYl.jpg

So I went back home and lo and behold the 6 didn't fit in the space due to hitting the sensor.

During this time I had an epiphany. I had played with the wires of the sensor watching my laptop for any change and was baffled because nothing happened. And then it hit me. The temp sensor is a part of the injector harness. I plugged it in and it went to 72 degrees and held steady.

Now I had to deal with tightening the clamp.

So I tried to get a socket on the sensor just to turn it slightly. Well I did, but felt the sensor head start wiggling. But it moved. I got the gear wrench on it and then the clamp broke somehow.

I found the clamps Flyin Miata sent with their NB lower hose and put one on repositioned at a much better angle. I can now loosen it with a socket from the top if I move the coil pack.

http://i.imgur.com/rvx3m7sl.jpg

So finally I went to put the clip back on the sensor and I pulled it to make sure the sensor was clamped. And the internal part of the sensor came with it.

http://i.imgur.com/s3Io58Ml.jpg

Luckily I had an Oreilly nearby with a new one, so I went and grabbed it and installed it and then tightened everything back up.

All I had to do was button things up and start it. But then I hit another speed bump.

Well I had bought a brass 90 to use in my cold pipe so I could hook my IACV back up, and when I was installing it I needed it clocked a certain way. Well I went for an extra rotation and over tightened it. I couldn't get it out by myself using vice grips and channel locks. I tried for 20 minutes before giving up knowing I would only make it worse.

http://i.imgur.com/zgRy9GEl.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/sNKxf1Rl.jpg

So the next day I took it to a friend and with the two of us we were able to muscle it out, but it took some threads with it.

http://i.imgur.com/TKsMjVwl.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/9yX3PqCl.jpg

So now I'm going to get a pipe tap set from HF and hope that I can clean up/recut the threads enough to make it work. If not I'll drill and go up to 1/2.

And then once I replace the fuel o rings we should be ready.

So more updates.

I started off the morning re-tapping the bung, and then putting the pipe back on, and then buttoning everything else up. I lubed the injector o rings and then got ready to fire. It cranked and cranked and wouldn't start. I had no more fuel leak and it sounded like it could be timing. I decided to replace spark plugs to be safe, and it still wouldn't start. I feared I would have to mess with timing. Until I had the odd idea to double check my firing order because it was also a possibility.

I'm an idiot. I had quickly googled for firing order and must have found a 1.8 diagram. Once I found the correct 1.6 diagram it started right up and idled fine. I waited for a while for the fans to kick on and tried to burp the system but the thermostat didn't seem to want to open. I was running short on time and decided to make the short drive to the new house.

Finally complete and in the sun.
https://i.imgur.com/7Ki32a6l.jpg

On the road again...
https://i.imgur.com/R2tvxCkl.jpg

I took it easy on the drive but it felt great. Shifted smooth, heard my blow off a few times but kept it out of boost. And then my MS showed the temps rising. I turned the heat on and made sure my fans were on but it was still rising so I pulled into a lot and let it cool for a bit before resuming. As I continued I noticed my AFR gauge was showing super lean. I was worried and pulled over, checked all connections and everything seemed fine, so I limped it to where I had to go. It was nerve wracking. I had to take my 86 year old future grandfather in law to the doctor and couldn't be late. After his appointment (at which I was searching for all the various solutions) I decided to check the wideband wiring after the gauge wouldn't move at idle or with moderate throttle which was unusual.

Well, my wire seemed stuck and that's when I figured it out. My wideband wire had melted to the exhaust.
The AEM wire is like a million feet long, and I couldn't fit it inside the tombstone area, so I had run it to the engine bay. I guess it developed some slack and melted. Luckily it all comes out as one piece, and I will take it to a friend tomorrow to shorten it drastically. I will keep it all inside the car this time.

After the appointment, I still had to get it home. I drove very gingerly and very cautiously, and it made it. I hope the short drive with the car potentially running lean didn't do any damage.

But Lobo made it to the new home.
https://i.imgur.com/kNmrJC3l.jpg

Once it was home I jacked it up and removed the damaged wire. I'm lucky it's on the controller side rather than the sensor side if I do say so myself.
https://i.imgur.com/8qS3Nizl.jpg

But anyway, it seems like once I fix that I can continue working on the coolant, and hopefully Lobo will be healthy for a while.

At least yours is running. We're not quite there yet.

Corifto

So I took the harness to a friend to shorten significantly. You can see how short the harness is now, and how much excess wire is left. I'll be keeping the excess to use for a time when I switch to dash pods and need it longer again.

https://i.imgur.com/I689E9kl.jpg

I got home, plugged the new harness in, and to my dismay the problem persisted. So back to the drawing board. After a lot of thought and research, I believed I had shorted out the sensor itself and needed a new one. I ordered one on Amazon and thankfully it came earlier today. In order to swap them, I dropped my down pipe to gain access. When I did, a few droplets of fuel and a smell of rich gas greeted me. This was a huge relief. With the gauge reading so lean I was worried for the engine. But I think when the gauge shorted, Megasquirt was throwing fuel at it to correct the problem, actually running rich.

I swapped them out and sat for a minute before turning the key, hoping this was the time. The car started, and the gauge worked like a dream. For the first bit of idling, it was really rich, possibly due to the previous richness I mentioned earlier.

Now that I could actually see my AFR, I tackled the next problem, the air in the coolant system. I drained the fluids (was previously nothing but distilled water, and then raised the car and added a gallon of 50/50 and used distilled water for the rest.

https://i.imgur.com/fV72k7pl.jpg

Loving the Lisle funnel.
https://i.imgur.com/mLkWvGIl.jpg

All in all, the car idled for about half an hour, with at least 10 cycles of the fan. I never saw the level in the funnel drop significantly, but I did see some burping and kept adding a bit of coolant to the funnel. Positive signs are that I felt hot air blowing through the radiator and both hoses did get hot.

Allow me to say that I am more than impressed with my fan kit again. I set my fans to come on at 205 and shut off at 195. It would take a bit to build up to 205, but what had to be no more than two minutes to drop back down. It was astounding. After the round of cycles, I ran one more round setting the fans to come on at 210, and then shut the car off after the fans shut off. I let the car cool, lowered it, and let it run again while level, and everything seems great.

I didn't risk taking a drive just yet, but I do believe I once again have a well running Miata. And what's even better is that after running for 30 minutes straight, there was no smell of any various leaks, and not a single droplet of anything in sight. So I think I did a good job sealing everything up and putting the car back together. Can't wait to drive it again. And soon you guys will know why getting it running has been so stressful.

HarryB

Great news! Just one thing to keep in mind during tuning; pig rich, as unburnt gasoline rich, will actually read lean on the WBO; the sensor measures oxygen content, not fuel percentage. Rare, but can happen if you are quite off what's normal.

Alright, it's about time I filled you in on the details.

I had a deadline to get this car running. A year ago, May 1st 2017 was the first day the Miata broke down on me. It was also one of the first dates with my girlfriend and the first and only time she'd been in the Miata. So I wanted to take her for a ride in it on the one year anniversary of that day. And I wanted the car to break down, but at my control. I'll explain in a minute.

Unfortunately, leading up to yesterday the car had been having issues. I took the car for a short drive the other day, and it was idling high, and then also began overheating, as my fans weren't coming on. They had been cycling fine during the drive until I was stopping for food. I got it home and figured I'd mess with it the next day. After jumping the pins at the diagnostic box a couple times, I figured it was a sticky relay. For the high idle I checked my IACV for a vacuum leak. I plugged the hole and the idle dropped a bit so I am confident I have a sticky valve. I also replaced the IACV hose. The original ripped and I was using a very badly bent straight piece of hose. So I went to the backroom of the local Advanced and found a couple hoses I thought could fit or be modified.

The not so great hose (Looks worse in real life.

https://i.imgur.com/A2PGbcVl.jpg

The options.

https://i.imgur.com/BYDZ95hl.jpg

And then the final piece. Cut it down slightly to fit. Basically perfect.
https://i.imgur.com/TMOnAbAl.jpg

When I plugged the hole I also heard a vacuum leak from the removed Air Valve on the 1.6 manifold. I had used a 3d Printed piece that warped.

If you look close you can see the o ring peeking out in two spots.
https://i.imgur.com/YcUb3b8l.jpg

For a temp fix I removed it and coated it with Mazda Gray silicone, which is sensor safe and tightened it down, leaving it to dry overnight.

The next day I located a factory air valve and was going to install it and cap the lines to be safe, but the plate was on there good with the sealant, so I figured it was good enough to make the single drive I needed it to.

So nearing the time I needed to leave, I applied the final touch.

https://i.imgur.com/k4sf7XGl.jpg

To be safe, I decided to let the car warm up and verify the idle was ok and check to make sure the fans were working. Well guess what, they weren't. But I'll save that for the next post. It was 30 minutes until I was leaving for our ride to the surprise breakdown proposal. I had the secret photographer, the limo, and a friend to take my car home all set. But my car was overheating. Find out what happened on the next post.

Corifto
05-02-2018, 09:23 PM
I've made two posts at once, so check up if you think you're missing something.

So the fans weren't running and I was trying to fix it with no time to spare. I tried jumping the diagnostic box again but nothing. Just a click of a relay. I checked all the connections and wires for signs of problems and tried again. Nothing. The fan kit from FM has modified wiring, and uses a new relay as well as a circuit breaker that goes to the alternator itself.

After looking things over, I saw some corrosion on the posts and the rings were loose. I took them off and cleaned them with a brush and sander (after unhooking the battery of course) and then tightened it back up. I tried to jump the pins again, and nothing.

20 minutes til we leave, and I'm dirty and sweaty with non-working fans. I decided to put all of my eggs in one basket and hoped the breaker was the problem. I removed it from the equation and wired the relay straight to the alternator.

I hooked the battery back up, hoped to whatever may be out there, and jumped the pins again.

Nobody, and I mean nobody has ever been so relieved by the sound of two Spal fans coming to life. I made sure the car cycled once, and shut it down, closed the hood and jumped into the shower to prepare to ask the most important question of my life.

I was so unsure of the car, I brought the laptop and had her hold it so I could keep an eye on everything. It drove "great" considering the high idle, still around 1750-2000. And a little blip of the throttle made it jerk and caused the AFR to go wild, giving me a reason to pull over.

I asked her to come look and see the problem, and stepped back and took a knee. Ring in one hand and permanent marker in the other.

https://i.imgur.com/s4SIhfql.jpg

A few minutes of stalling later and she saw a limo roll up, which she didn't believe the first few times that it was for us. But it was.

https://i.imgur.com/xFuXnQel.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/OAXEdhTl.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/gNpouy8l.jpg

All said and done, it all went off without a hitch. Miata made it home, I'm engaged, and I can breathe again.

Thank you everyone for sticking with me through this. Now to take the time with Lobo to make him much better.

Sooo...

Lobo has been in a sad state. I've always been told to keep windows down in a garage, and probably should've taken into account the fact that my garage is not fully enclosed. Recently we fully cleaned our garage and opened space up. Then I realized that not only was Lobo very dusty, but the battery was dead, and there was mold.

Thankfully the mold wasn't as bad as it could've been. I rolled the car out, got some N95 masks, and a mold removal spray and went to town today, and left the car out in the Florida sun all day with the windows down to air it and dry it out.

I got a new OEM battery under warranty, and replaced some vacuum line that popped off the last time I drove it. (The proposal on May 1st) I will be getting a few things in order and hopefully I will start driving it again soon.

I just unplug my battery when my car is in the garage, got them to last a LONG time that way. I also use gel battery as well. The mold is sucky but fixable and from now keep some silica desiccant packs under your seats, and in the trunk, Florida Humidity can be a nightmare on cars if left unchecked. We need to hook up again man, I have not seen you in forever.
