Does anyone know where I can find an air intake system for my 1.6L NA? without spending $200.00. Much to my dismay I just found my intake was being held together by some cleverly disguised gorilla tape. I have had it for only three weeks so far and have had to replace a lot of parts just trying to get it running right again. This air intake system could end up breaking me if it costs to much. pleas help.

I said F-it and went ahead and took a gambol. I ordered my intake. http://www.carid.com/1993-mazda-miata-air-intakes/weapon-r-air-intake-283690.html I pray that it works. The F-ed up thing is that my car being a "97" but having the 1.6L power plant, makes it impossible to be sure of anything you purchase for it. Every store (brick and mortar or internet) has only the 1.8L engine in their computer systems for "94" and later model Miata's. So I have to enter my car as a "93" to get the 1.6L option. This makes things a little difficult to be sure that you are getting the right parts.

I have the same issue when browsing non-EU shops. One intake I saw that I liked its design, but I don't know if it actually helps gain anything is the DDM works one, with the heatshield

Pretty much anything that will increase air flow will help improve power. Having a heat shield helps a little bit more. The gains usually are not all that great. Nothing worth throwing a party over. But I cant even find OEM parts. Auto Zone and Napa don't have them. Every where I look it's all aftermarket kits that I find. So I have to gamble as to whether that parts will work or not. I live in Vegas! If I wanted to gamble I'd go to a casino. I don't like to gamble with my cars.

When I get the parts I ordered. I'll post if they worked or not, so others can benefit from my gamble.

Is your car a USDM or what? Post a pic of the engine.

I think USDM 94-97 miatas only had the 1.8l engine. Maybe yours was imported? You can select the 93 as an option for the engine, but make sure it's for the long nose. Just for the engine though. I guess your body, diff, axles and interior match the 1.8l options.

The OE intake will crack and leak at the accordion-looking part. I have had luck repairing them with adhesives and black electrical tape to bind them together tightly. Usually, you can find good used replacements cheap.

I cannot see your location from this device. On your previous posts, I just assumed you had a North American car with the 1.8.

Kung fu, My location is Las Vegas, Nv. When I bought the car i figured it to be USDM to. But my luck wasn't that good lol. What are the odds? Thanks Scratch, That would have been nice. But I have little time to get this thing running right. I'm down to 21 days on my 30 day tag. I have only 3 days in that 21 days where I can actually work on it. The more I dig in, the more I find that has been neglected. Makes me feel like I have a pendulum slowly working it way to my neck! It seems like I can do nothing to get out of its way. So I made a decision hoping that it was the right one.

Alright...looked at this thread again.

The second image, the emissions tag, that is under the hood, IIIRC.

I *think* what is happening here it someone replaced the hood on that car with one from an earlier model year. The other picture, of the engine, clearly shows a 1.8 motor. It also looks like a little overspray on the emissions decal near the top of it.

Project G in Los Angeles, could get you an OE intake, used.

The Title is in the mail. How might I confirm the engine size?

One picture of the valve cover will let you know. 1.6 letters are indented. The 1.8 has raised lettering.
You could also run the vin number through Mazda's online database

As per the pic, its a 1.8. Look at the intake manifold, peeps. Also, 1.8 has the CAS on the exhaust side, but the pic is really too blurry to tell. All US miatas from 94-05 had a 1.8 engine. Probably the hood was swapped.. Miata 101 people.

lol just when I start to reconcile the idea of having a European Miata KFJ steps in and ruins everything lol. 1.8L USDM it is. I am both happy and upset. The Air Intake I ordered was for the 1.6L. I guess I will just have to wait and see if it will fit or not. I'm hoping that at most I will only have to work around the top coolant hose.

It most likely won't work with your MAF.

I started wondering after thinking about how someone got a 1.6 to work with OBD2 electronics and the sensors needed to keep it happy (the ECU).

Thank you KFJ. GOOD NEWS!!!!! CARiD.com just E-mailed me. They say that the part I ordered is on back order from the factory. They gave me the option to cancel my order. I went to the WeaponR website and ordered directly from them a Carbon Fiber intake for $165.00 plus $15.00 shipping. I made sure that it was for the 94-04 1.8L engine. It was actually cheaper than the aluminum intake. Go figure. 2-7 days shipping. I'll keep yall posted. This is prety cool cause I saw the same one on Ebay for $235.00.

I got it to pass smog!!! But I still have a misfire. Does anyone have a line on new but inexpensive parts? I plan to get a project block in the future to build up. I'm not sure if I want to do to much after market upgrades on this engine. I just need it to be reliable for when my bike brakes down or the weather is really bad. I'm looking in to possibly having to replace any one or all of the following. The Cam Position censor, Ignition Coil, Mas Airflow Censor, Throttle position censor, so on ans so fourth. I haven't gotten around to testing them yet. I'm just trying to get an idea of how much I'm going to end up spending. Usually I wouldn't worry to much about it. But I was out driving it two days ago and lost my clutch. The clutch grabs wonderfully but I get no pressure in the pedal and cant put it in to gear. My son I bled the hydraulic system. The slave cylinder, despite an extremely slow leek that is only known because of fluid on the lower A-arm, reacts to the pedal being pressed and pushes on the lever like it should. So I'm guessing I have a worn throw out bearing (Clutch release bearing). With all the work and time it's going to take to get to it I'm figuring I should just get a clutch kit and replace all the clutch components. This is going to cost almost $400.00. Not to mention that I'm having some other issue with the cars idle dropping every time the coolant fans come on or when I turn on the A/C fan. I'm running out of funds fast atm and not getting much time to get more funds . Any info on where to get good parts cheap will be worth gold to me right about now. Thank you in advance.

Congrats passing smog!

Take that list of items you want to replace, and begin diagnosing them each. Most can be tested following the factory service manual. We have a link to them. With disappearing funds, you need to be sure before taking a shotgun approach to repairs.
