Looking for a shift knob about the same size as OE, but non-metallic on the outside. Not a fan of spheres, I grab from the side. Weighted would also be nice.

Tired of hot-to-the-touch shifters that are short, reflective, and clumsy. Simple and clean, preferred.

I had the privilege of watching him make one recently, really a lot of care & craftsmanship goes into it

For something less fancy, there's a bunch of delrin knobs out there.

the ms "carbon" knob looks nice, but its lighter than even the stock shift knob.

You might look for a Nardi wood SE shift knob from an NB. They have a great heft, are stock shaped, and are... wood.

There are a few delrin knobs on the market. I think some have a metal insert to give it a more weighted feel...

I have a Techno Toy Tuning delrin JGTC knob. I love it so much! It's light, reflects heat (my shifter turret gets extremely hot when racing, or on long summer trips in Texas), looks great, apparently doesn't wear out, and always is clean because it's non-porous

AutoExe CF Knob...I have one I'd be glad to let you test out...all time favorite piece...very close to OE shape and size, bit larger and NEVER gets hot...still has great weight and all...

awesome! I have a voodoo in there now. It gets hotter than hell and I don't like the feel on the shifts with it. My hand slips off too, sometimes.

Less lube usually helps with the slippage. :teehee:

Where's the fun in that???

I used the knob from my old 90 RX-7 and it was great. It's taller and heavier than the stock Miata knob. If it were in better condition I might still be using it.

It's the one on the right:

I also have one of the real old teardrop Voodoos, for folks with schwetty palms. :p
Still gets hot in the sun though.

In case anyone is wondering, the NB OEM Nardi wood knobs weigh in at 6.1 oz, 1 oz less than a stock NA knob.

Check out this listing on Ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mazda-Miata-MX8-or-MX5-Delrin-Shift-Knob-/200315703133?hash=item2ea3bf0f5d&vxp=mtr

And this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Delrin-Slim-Shift-Knob-Universal-10x1-5-Free-US-Shipping-/321402836794?hash=item4ad51a173a&vxp=mtr

I have several similar delrin knobs, I even made a few (but mine aren't that nice :?). Everyone around here really likes them. I have one on the miata, Chris has one on his 240, and we're threading the shifter on the e30 so we can put one on there. Delrin is on the light side, but I don't mind that. I like to feel the transmission working and know that I'm not jamming it into gear.

Same here. I ordered the Techno Toy unit in white.

I understand why people like short shifters, that feel, but for my purposes I prefer a longer grip that doesn't stain or limit how I grab it. I an not discrediting anyone's shifter, but the Voodoos are too heavy, too hot, too slippery for the street, and the action is vague. The longer shifter feels more precise to me and I can feel the gears engage. At the track, I am shifting rather quickly and I don't need to be reaching down any further to find the lever. Sure, extensions are neat, but it doesn't help when I am swatting back-handed at the lever. I also lose a little sensitivity on a shorter ball-type with driving gloves on. I don't like wood shifters because I don't need to split one by accident.

The white will be barely in my peripheral vision and will accent the interior well, too.

Update:

The Techno Toy shift knob does not fit the stock NA shifter. The taper on the lever versus the knob will not allow you to engage the treads.

Or what about the Mazdaspeed RX-8 urethane knob? It maybe a bit too spherical for you but it is taller and you can grip from the side.
