Well, after spamming/ruining the respective NA thread (sorry guys!), I think it is time to start a new one. I would love to build myself a retro-inspired classy OEM+ NB2, and when searching for inspiration I came to realize that there are a handful of such NB builds around. So this thread is aimed to gather such info for future reference, in case anyone wants to go down that path.

Pfunk, RMCoachworks and Pacman99 cars are pretty awesome on that front, especially on the interior, and I am definitely borrowing elements for mine.

RM Coachworks demo car, that tombstone/radio surround and HVAC are so awesome!

On the exterior, I am thinking keeping it simple; Zoom fuel cap and repeaters, Watanabes in 15" with meaty tires and an R-package lip. Still debating on GV taillights on NB2's.

Just wheels and a drop but IMO looks great:

And a few more from a Greek NB2 (debating on flares, more racecar than retro IMO)

Retromodern's NB is one of my favorite NBs.

I think some NBs look great with 14s.

I approve this message.

It is definitely more difficult to achieve the "retro inspired" look given its more modern facelift but the few examples you sited it is entirely possible. :drinkto:

^^^agree it will take straightening some of the design lines to soften the sporty modern look of the NB. Pacman99 did it well in his interior. The banana type rims definitely straightened some of the exterior lines but the challenge is the front facia. The headlight shape is so modern. BUT nothing can stop an inspired enthusiast........can't wait to see your rendition!!!

I think a lot of it depends on what you call vintage. I'm not being cheeky here; what I mean is, the NA harks back to the '60s British vibe very easily, but I don't think the NBs do that as well. It can be done to an extent, especially if you're willing to gut and redo the interior, but the exterior, due more to the headlights than anything else, doesn't really go along. Think about '60s Euro cars and there are plenty of curvy ones to choose, but the headlights are still round. The NB is curvier than the NA (that's a good thing in my book) but I've not seen a new fascia for the NB I like. I always thought the Pitcrew for the NA was much better than the NB version, for example. The '70s interiors, such as the 240Z, would play well with the NB exterior. In fact, I'd first asked Ken to do hooded/angled gauge treatments for my plan but he couldn't make it happen so we worked with what we could achieve. Any advice I could give would be to have a crystal clear vision in mind along with areas you're open to compromising, and planning for quite a while before committing. I planned/made mental models for seven or eight years before really jumping in.

Wow, that's some response, thanks everybody!

Retromodern's NB is one of my favorite NBs.

Will second that, interior bits are lovely.

Pacman99 door cards and shorty console are on my list already ;)

Regarding exterior, I love the overall looks of NB(2)s. They are not 60's retro by any means, however a banana-style wheel (original watanabes for me please) and some other minor details would help IMO. I would love to see a car with Zoom fuel lid, Watanabes, Zoom side markers, Fastback hardtop, and maybe bullet-style mirrors, GV tail lights and flares. The only one coming close exteriorwise is Jeremy's (artcentermiata) Kimochi cruiser.

You're absolutely right, I have a list and would love to do an illustration of how I want it all to end up. Thanks for the advice! (p.s. your interior is what led me to RetroModern, and an absolute inspiration; I think I have every image available stored in my "interior inspiration" folder, so thank you!)

A few more pictures for today!

PFunk's awesome interior; gotta love the colour, switches, rings and HVAC controls as well as the Nardi.

An original inspiration for my gauges/needles/steering wheel. I already bought a NB1 gauge cluster to swap over needles (and experiment a bit). I think this is where I want to go, albeit with a satin black gauge surround (like Smac's on the following picture). Oh and what people, especially Adam, think about using black needles?

I know it is an NA, but looks absolutely stunning (using this as my desktop since Smac uploaded it).

I wanted that merlot fastback SO BAD(it is/was in Texas up near Dallas, iirc) but it was almost double my budget for a miata at the time. Not sure if he sold it or what but it was a sweet miata at a reasonable price. :drinkto:

I agree with you Chad, it has all good things going for it. Does it happen that you have any more photos of it? Not sure if I am exactly sad that you let it slip by, as we would not have your Warbird here, which is one of the best NA builds around IMO.

That is very kind of you to say Harry but this fastback was/is well built. Oddly enough he also had a turbocharged NA that i was considering before i got my nb1, my first miata in 2012. The fastback was for sale when i wad looking at a NA in 2013...funny how that happened. Here is a link to the for sale ad:

Lots of really pretty stuff out there. The NB can definitely exude classiness, approaching The high-end makers of the 60s-70s, but it is a lot more work. I was originally going to plan for a Retro inspiration, but I think I'll just shoot for Classy.

Quality content, nice! I was discussing with Demon how rare it is to find an NB(2) with a Zoom fuel lid. TBH, I have seen pictures of one only, our own RotorNutFD3S' black NB.

Anyway, I really liked that fuel lid, it didn't disrupt the overall look of the car but people noticed it and complimented it all the time. That being said when I had the car repainted I threw the stock fuel lid back on (figured it might as well match just in case) and never swapped it back for the vintage lid, I guess it was just time for a change. What Slipstreem said is true too, I've seen the same lid powdercoated black on a black car and it looked great as well. Here's a couple more shots, in the last picture you can just see the lid, I think it's just the right splash of chrome.

Not sure if there's such thing as a winner...PFunk, Jeremy, Retromodern and others did a great job, but definitely this car is up there as well, as one of my favorites NBs. You are absolutely correct HarryB, there are several beautiful cars on this forum where I get my inspiration from especially to Adam of Revlimiter whose car is absolutely gorgeous. Thx to all the Miata enthusiast for my inspiration and my build.
HarryB, I would love to help anyway I can achieve ur build but sadly I don't have a build thread but do have lots of pictures [emoji3]
Let me know if you have any questions on what u see and I will do my best to answer your questions.
I will try and post some pics of my interior throughout the weeks as I'm looking to custom the centre panel console with more vintage goodies

... It maybe a little longer for this build as I get all my goodies from the US and currently the Canadian dollar for me has been at its ultimate low and looks to only get worse. Who am i kidding, I will probably buy parts soon in the new year [emoji3] just don't tell my wife [emoji12] LOL

I have ordered from Buyee a few times and they shipped very quickly and came in, in less than week. If it comes thru customs it can be held up like when i ordered from Jass Performance but they are in Estonia i think.

Where did you order from Tony? I ordered a few items off of Rakuten yesterday and received the order total (shipping is figured by seller after buying like Buyee), within 8 hours or so and paid it right away and received a shipping notification another 8 hours or so later. Hopefully will receive by next week. :)

kitster: I too would love to see a build thread on your beautiful NB. It is definitely more difficult to make a build thread after the fact but pics are the biggest part so even if you don't have the documentation to establish the time line I'm sure it will still be great. :drinkto:

Yup the rear definitely needs help it is too high/tall and kinda squared. a Shorin rear will probably flow well. A different side skirt will work better for sure. But the front does carry a big load of retro which looks better than a Pitcrew NA or NB IMO. The mouth has more command of being a Cobra. It really follows the curves of the NB. I am in LOVE lol.

I am really close on scoring an awesome deal on a set of 15" Watanabe/SSR RS-8's, super excited. Also decided to pull the trigger on a Zoom fuel lid at some point soon; Tony and Chad posting pics were a major influence! The reason I am posting though is to ask kitster (sorry for not knowing your real name mate) about the Cobra-style mirror. Found some on e-bay, but they seem a bit low quality. Also, how did you manage to mount it on the Miata windshield mount? I can CNC an arm, but would prefer an easier solution TBH...

mx54life
01-01-2016, 05:31 PM
Harry if that was the IL Motorsport Cobra sliding mirror then you may have to take your dome light down and replace the upper mount there. In my NA the uppermount is bolted where the rear mirror is at. It looks like on the NB that is the where the dome light is at. If you don't get an absolute answer wait till next weekend when I get back home and I will test fit it on my 99 to confirm.

The process I did was to keep the original base and welded the Cobra arm to it and sanded it and chromed dip or paint it if that's easier. Hope this helps.

http://i374.photobucket.com/albums/oo189/HarryBk88/60964_506696029363180_1791538603_n_zpse8dppsfi.jpg (http://s374.photobucket.com/user/HarryBk88/media/60964_506696029363180_1791538603_n_zpse8dppsfi.jpg .html)

Now I know these are F8s (and the only retro thing about the car is most probably the wheels), but I really really like it!

This is my 1st stage to a vintage look for my 2001 SE. I made new door panels. They're flat like NA. I used 1990 NA door card tops, which I stripped and reupholstered with some foam in it. The cards are actual door car material for custom work. The electric door switch is hidden under the vinyl padding in the top of the driver's door. The wood is African Mahogany, which matches the steering wheel, e-brake and shifter. Figuring out the wood type was a bitch.

The door handles have been deleted and old style Porche canvas pulls are used instead. It's hard to see the strap in the pic because it's pointing right at you

The aluminum bezels I had cnc cut and then I sanded from 60 grit to 800 grit after filing the edges round. Then I polished with a drill and buff pad. The bars are finished the same. They're just 1/8''x3/4'' aluminum from home Depot. I used the bars to cover the transition from wood to vinyl.

Next step will to cover radio surround with real African Mahogany and delete the console. 2 paddle switches will be used for the window switches. The console will have the wood on it as well. I think that no console and the flat door cards will give it a nice retro rod look.

Agree with Peter, it looks awesome! Two questions if you do not mind; what are the trim rings on the HVAC panel and vents? Also did you find an appropriate plug for the toggle switches or did you cut into the OEM wiring loom?

kitster
05-17-2016, 02:20 PM
Thank you Peter and Harry!

Harry, the HVAC knobs were custom made on a lathe.
The vent rings are the typical vent rings that u can get online through Moss, Goodwin, R-speed etc.

Harry can u kindly clarify about the toggle switch. Are u asking about the plate it's on? OEM wiring loom?

I will help where I can. Thx again gentlemen !

These are pics of my hacked shorty console. I made it from a black 99 piece. I then covered it in vinyl, using leftover African Mahogany, from my door panels.

I laminated the shifter and radio surround with a single piece of wood. No difference in grain. The black plug on the end is an USB plug.

Inside the radio surround I acquired a rare JDM piece that replaces the air bag switch. I used marine rocker switches for my windows in that. The panel also has a light which I'm going to hook up a temp light to go on at 230. I think this compliments and completes my retro look for the interior, as it matches the factory DeNardi wood perfectly.

Unfortunately the Marred LX1 has been discontinued and Marred is making an aluminum seat tbat will replace it. Robert, the new owner of my previous 97m, was so impressed by my high praise of the LX1 he got one of the last ones and loved it so much hunted down a second for the passenger. Robert is a thin guy, I'd say a 30" waist if I were to guess, where as I'm fat(42" waist) and it fit me so that is a good range of sizes. What sold me was it got you lower than any other seat while retaining sliders.

The thing is that i really like the warm light of the incandescent ones on the left, and also the contrast between the left and the right more cold, more white..LED in fact...
When i received it , my first thought was to change them directly to have one homogenous color, but then i think i get used to this and more than this i start to like it as it is ;)

LOVE the wheel / shift knob / ebrake handle, especially the rich color. What is this? Now that the NA is a racer, I desperately need more vintage styling in my NB (shy of doing a full dash conversion.)

I love my 2002 NB8C very much. It has all the safety and comfort features I need. I'm slowly altering its more modern look to harken back to 60's era.
I was very, very fortunate to locate a billet grille from Mike at Miata Kingdom who had the last of the hand made grilles done by Glen Swensen of Roberts Auto Sport in Phoenix. If ever you find one don't hesitate to buy it. You'll be impressed by its quality.19577

I went with a retro-modern approach on my interior. I got rid of most of the exposed plastic and replaced it with leather or fabric covered surfaces, but used modern spacer mesh for the covering. The simplified interior, center console delete, flat door cards and chopped dash center, are reminiscent of older, more open cockpit designs. A classic Nardi leather steering wheel and chrome parking brake pair with a modern Raceseng hybrid shift knob. The doors have Porsche-style pull loops and retro-style switches under the dash control the windows.

I've added a few external changes to bring my NB8C closer to the classic look I'm hoping to achieve. From Jass Performance the Chrome/Black LED Side Indicators. The chrome luggage rack from Racelands. The Zoom Engineering - Retro Racing Fuel Lid and the superb REV9 Runabout M2 Mirrors.1990919910199111991219913

I think it is as easy as swapping the two wires to the light.
Here is how I would do it..
1. Disconnect the two wires but leave the ground wire attached to the bulb assembly.
2. Turn on the lights. Use a test light to check which wire is being powered.
3. Take that powered wire and touch it to the each bulb assembly wires one at a time. One wire should yield a brighter light than the other. You should attach that wire to the dimmer bulb wire.
4. Now attach the other wire that is remaining.
5. Hit your brakes and see if everything is working properly now.

As I'm still aiming for the retro modern look, it was time to replace the RFP1s for something more classic. I've always like the look this style brings. These are Rota RBs in 15 X 8 +25 and fitted with 205/50. No scraping either which is a bonus.

Looks great! I see you lost the headlight surrounds (more vintage!) and billet grill (maybe less?). And what are those new seats? :)

I'm an NA guy but have always wondered, do NB owners ever think about removing the nose badge?

HarryB

I have removed mine, but nose looks empty without it. The NB one is much better as it is smaller, but I have some Revlimiter goodness to be installed.

wilko53

The billet grill along with most of the good gear was removed when I put it up for sale. I'm slowly putting it all back together as it was and even better. On a side note I had purchased a low, 50Km NB8C and decided to sell it instead. Its Titanium colour didn't do it for me. Still, I added 14,000Km in 5 months and made a big profit.
The seats are MazdaSpeed that even came with NB rails. Super expensive but extremely comfy. As much as I love them, I'm unsure what to do with the interior. I could keep these and use white or gray on the door trims or use the seats I got from a UK 2000 model Icon. I like the look of the Icons seats with separate head restraints. I have the entire parchment interior I could use. It's a dilemma.

As I said, I love the look of the separate head restraints. It's more in line with the classic look. I have all of the mahogany trim as well. I think it would go well with the black exterior. The trouble is I would need to swap the earlier NB8A door trims and centre console for NB8B ones. These weren't available in Australia.

HarryB

Hm. I like the parchment interior, but I am partial to it. On the other hand Mazdaspeed seats are more "race" and 90's period correct than retro. That being said, I might be tempted to re-trim in the same parchment leather as the original seats and use them. Or sell them for a profit, and re-trim the NB Icon seats if needed (drivers' one looks "tired")

And please start a build thread :)

Now that we're in "lock down" I may have time to do a build thread here. I do have one on MX5 Internation and "Sooty" has his own Facebook page as well.
If I could obtain the parchment door trims and centre console for the NB8B, I would use the Icon seats, which as you said, need recovering.

Damn NicolasN, I don't think I've ever seen that front end on an NB. That looks amazing!

Slowgoing, but got my center console carpet in, and stereo relocated to the glove compartment. It's nice to have music again after...6 months?

It was a dilemma I had battled with for the longest time. Do I forgo the MazdaSpeed seats in order to utilize the parchment interior with the Icon seats with the separate head restraints? The answer was, why not have both. I was able to get a Garnet Red 2003 model, a colour that would look truly fabulous with the complete parchment interior. This colour combination wasn't available in Australia so some international purchases have to be made. I can now focus my retro ideas into this new build and my Brilliant Black can take on a a more sporty look.22203

It's been over a year since I got my Garnet Red and started the process of turning it into the classic look I have always wanted. I still have more to do with the exterior but for now the Rota RBs, Runabout M2 mirrors and Zunsport grille will do.

The interior has all been swapped out, from the carpet, the dash, door trims, centre console and of course the Nardi wood trim. All this was sourced from overseas over time, as the local updated NBs didn't come with this parchment option.

@wilko53: How was the fitment on the CM taillights? Looking at getting just the housings for a custom taillight setup. This would be taillight housings number 3 for the project and would like them to be the last ones.:fp:

wilko53
08-31-2021, 02:17 AM
When I received the Carbon Miata LED tail lights I was quite happy with the fitment. I had heard that Carbon Miata products can be a bit hit and miss. I chose the carbon not the fibreglass for a better finish even though I may get them colour coded now that I've put them on the Garnet Red.
I wrote to Marc at Carbon Miata with some constructive criticism that I pass on here.
There are a few installation recommendations I'd like to make.
1. Supply the securing nut
2. Waterproof tape to block the holes left exposed by original mounting points.
3. Provide a grommet to seal around the wiring loom.
4. A rubber seal around the tail light
5. Make sure the rectangular reflector is squarely positioned. One of mine wasn't.
6. It may be too late to change the mound but the area where the screw attaches could have been bigger.

All that being said, I'm very happy with the look and function.
Mine were supplied in December last year.
