This thread will be for the people too lazy to make a DIY thread or it's too complex to make one. Show off the cool trinkets and parts you made or in the process of making for your car. I'll start:

Just made these today. Theses one or two minor things I need to do.

2011!

Gauges. :)

I made my first set of gauge about 10 years ago. It was VERY D-I-Y. Nowhere near as finished as the set you see above. Quite rough by my current standards and something I'd not sell now. But I was very proud of them at the time. The How-to can be found here. (http://revlimiter.net/mods/gauges.php)

My current gauges are made with the help of about $2000 worth of machinery. They just barely qualify as DIY now days.

Mine doesn't really count as a DIY that much either. I used a cnc lathe haha.

S2000 Start Button (NA version)

Another mod I did a bunch of years ago. I was, as far as I know, the first guy to put an S2000 start button in a Miata. I wrote up a big how to page (http://revlimiter.net/mods/s2000_button.php) which is still one of the most popular pages on my site.

A little switchbox I fabbed up out of the useless cubbyhole and a piece of plexiglass. I sprayed the inside flat black and masked off the icons with letters you get from the hobby store. Then I wired some green lights in so the icons light up at night.

I had a spare broken console, so I hacked it up with a dremel and hacksaw, then used a propane torch to "weld" the plastic back together (and developed some real nice burns/callouses on my thumbs during that project!). I used a very small amount of Bondo to smooth out the place where I had cut-and-joined it together, then painted it all black. The most recent addition (the lip at the bottom edge) was done with some "Rapid Fix" glue and scrap ABS plastic. This was MUCH EASIER than using the propane torch to bond the plastic together.

I actually have a thread of the process on another forum or two. I will try to remember to transfer some of that data to MazdaRoadster this afternoon.

Lots of talented folks not getting a whole lot of props such as Dustin's gauge/start button panel, MX5's awesome trunk amp setup and many more before in this thread.

Just wanted to say that even though it may seem lukewarm in here, we're all taking note and appreciate your hard work, attention to detail and efforts photographing and posting here.

So many of these posts need their own DIY write ups because the ideas are so good.

Anyway, good work to all, keep it up. We're watching.

Here is a circuit diagram that I scribbled when I designed the shiftlight I posted earlier. I made some changes since then but I don't remember what exactly. Honestly if that's not enough info on what to do you probably shouldn't try making one. You should probably have a bit of a background with electronics and related equipment. My first one burst into smoke lol. Luckily I am a physicist so I have access to a lot of electronics equipment that helps a lot when making something like that.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v651/Xekueins/1.jpg

And for the headlights. I have since changed the pivot arms since the way I described in this thread broke. I just shortened stock ones the second time around.

diy shorty console. I did this by cutting the console with a dremel and cut off wheel. Then using a pencil torch to heat the plastic and bend the part that holds the switches down. Once that was done it was assembled with plastiweld. I still need to hit it with some bondo and then sand/paint it. It's going to have to do for now though as i've got other ish that needs done.

the thread pitch of the support bolt is a pretty generic size for cameras, so i'll get something with better video quality someday!

Low-cost DIY BlendMount for my ScanGauge

3958

3959

3960

*Please ignore the aluminum bracket wrapped around the top and back of my ScanGauge. That was part of the previous mounting solution and I was not going to be able to remove it without a lot of trouble, so I just left it attached.

$4.56 - 6436K72 (McMaster-Carr) - Two-Piece Clamp-on Shaft Collar, Aluminum, 3/4" Bore, 1-1/2" OD, 1/2" Width
$2.90 - 93505A197 (McMaster-Carr) - Aluminum Male-Female Threaded Hex Standoff, 1/2" Hex, 1" Length, 1/4"-20 Screw Size
$6.62 - 98511A621 (McMaster-Carr) - Lightweight Aluminum Socket Head Cap Screw, 1/4"-20 Thread, 5/8" Length, Plain Silver, Pack of 10
(you can save some money by using a normal screw here)
$7.13 - 06484 (purchased locally) - 1' of 3M "Dual Lock" heavy duty velcro
(I highly recommend this over traditional velcro, as the adhesive used with this velcro should not sag/melt when it gets hot in the sun.)
Piece of scrap aluminum angle bar that I had on hand (it should be pretty cheap at your local hardware store)
1/4" lock washer that I had on hand (again, this should be inexpensive if you don't already have some)

Drill and tap 1/4"-20 hole in shaft collar.
Cut excess threads off end of standoff.
Apply loctite and insert standoff in collar.
Cut angle aluminum to length of Scangauge, use heat (optional) and hammer to flatten the aluminum from a 90-degree angle into the desired angle.
Mark and cut notch for data cable.
Drill 1/4" hole for bolting to standoff.
Cut and attach velcro to bracket and to ScanGauge.
If desired, mask velcro and paint bracket.
Mount shaft collar on mirror neck, mount bracket on shaft collar, attach ScanGauge to bracket.

it's a 2 piece part. wait..... that IS an ignition trim ring, right? like this one:
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_64tN-NXMHUc/TOkLMvlq6jI/AAAAAAAACko/GwKSL4kdfj0/s1600/button4.jpg

Or am I taking a totally wrong guess?

The center piece turns with the key, while the larger piece is mounted to the outer part of the lock cylinder. I used a thin scraping of silicone glue to hold it in place.

my center piece came off at some point and vamoosed.

Freaky Roadster
07-27-2012, 04:23 PM
It certainly is an ignition cover plate. The centre on the one I made sits in a recessed section on the back, no way can it fall out. It's for a friend and should fit nicely by just using thick double sided tape or glue.
If you have some digital calipers or some way to measure for the missing piece I'd be more than willing to turn the piece up or maybe make another of my design if you like.
Bear in mind I'm in the UK

I've been watching my IATs get outrageously hot lately due to the TX Summer heat & humidity and the mostly short, frequent, low-speed trips I've been making in my daily routine. For a few days I just drove around with the barn doors up, but that started to irritate me, so it was time for yet another project...

I started off with Adam's fantastic DIY write-up (found here: http://www.revlimiter.net/mods/duct_install.php) but instead of the carbon fiber duct I picked up a fiberglass piece from The Chassis Shop (http://secure.chassisshop.com/partlist/5731/ -- Model# C42-017). It turns out that this was a good thing, because I found that the OEM headlights are more restrictive in usable space than the Moss lopros. I had to hack up the duct a bit to fit (notched and bent it to follow the curve of the lid some) and I underestimated my clearance which meant adding a bit more fiberglass at the back as well.

Based on some of the info provided by Adam and also for visual balance, I folded the lid back and under to reinforce and make the rear edge more three dimensional.
http://www.somethingsquare.com/temp/project_fail/duct_headlight_lid/963_0460x.jpg
http://www.somethingsquare.com/temp/project_fail/duct_headlight_lid/963_0465x.jpg
http://www.somethingsquare.com/temp/project_fail/duct_headlight_lid/963_0466x.jpg

Fiberglass and I have a very antagonistic relationship, but I'm satisfied with my efforts this go-round. I'm not proud of my fiberglass work, but I am satisfied with it.
http://www.somethingsquare.com/temp/project_fail/duct_headlight_lid/963_0463x.jpg
http://www.somethingsquare.com/temp/project_fail/duct_headlight_lid/963_0464x.jpg

I still need to smooth everything up a bit and then paint and assemble. I also plan to add some filler to smooth the back edge of the lid where the air will pass through.
http://www.somethingsquare.com/temp/project_fail/duct_headlight_lid/963_0467x.jpg

Not exactly a smooth start, but I think the worst of it is behind me now.

iRoadster
08-02-2012, 01:52 PM
Quite a bit more comfortable. There's somewhere for my knee to go when I'm waiting a stoplights and whatnot.
I'm a small dude too, so I'd imagine this would be even more beneficial for bigger Miata owners.

I still need to find something to cover the hole for the door pocket though.

I also want to find some better nylon. The red is alright, but the weave could be better IMO. But then again, it was cheaper than a soda.

Figured I'd follow up on my headlight duct lid:

http://www.somethingsquare.com/temp/project_fail/duct_headlight_lid/963_0503xc.jpg

http://www.somethingsquare.com/temp/project_fail/duct_headlight_lid/963_0504x.jpg

Unfortunately, it was not as effective as I had hoped. There is too much distance between the ducts and the intake, so while they do let air flow in, there is not adequate circulation/flow-path to get the cooler air to the intake. All it does is cool off my cruise control vacuum pot. :P It should come in handy once I go turbo and relocate my intake though.

tsingson
08-26-2012, 01:32 PM
Would the rivets disrupt any flow over/through the duct?

jnshk
08-26-2012, 09:09 PM
I've thought about that too. It is possible that they may disrupt laminar flow (I think) and make the duct less effective, but I don't think they will render the ducts useless. The naca duct triangle windows that I had a couple years ago really flowed a large volume of air despite having rivets that attached them. I think that the duct is in a high enough pressure zone that if pressure inside the engine bay could be relieved then they would flow very well.

I decided to make a disappearing license plate bracket, because offset mounts look gross.

Virginia law clearly states that the plate cannot swing, so I carry a 90* piece of steel and some duct tape to "fix" it on the spot if the law has any more problems with my car. For shows or whatever, I can stick something in the grill to hold the license plate always up.

I cut the aluminum piece based on a CAD drawing (Cardboard Aided Design) to dodge things in the mouth area. If you couldn't tell, I used only a drill, tin snips, and a dremel to make this. It bolts up to the white plastic bumper. I chose to cut the license plate a bit shorter vertically so that it would clear the grill without being right at the front of the bumper. It's all held together with stainless steel rivets.

As much as I'd love to claim credit for the idea, it was inspired by a Thompson Automotive product. They want $30 + shipping. This cost me $12 for the stainless piano hinge, I had all the other rivets and bolts lying around. But mine sits further back and seems to fold up flatter because there's less material and I cut the plate a bit.
