This is a post I’ve wanted to write for the last three years since I learned about the tech I’m now using. I’m SUPER excited to finally be in this place with my business that I can unveil this.

Generation 3 revlimiter Gauges now exist!!!

http://revlimiter.net/blog/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/DSC_2442-590x394.jpg

This is what I’ve been doing with myself for the past month or longer. My blogging and online posting has suffered. I’ve gone weeks without much instagram presence. I’ve not been around much at home either. But… it was for a good cause.

Gen3 gauges!!!

So what the heck does Gen3 mean?

My 3rd Generation revlimiter Gauges are made in a completely different way than the thousands of Gen2 and Gen2.5 gauges made between 2012 and 2017 (or the handful of Gen1 gauges made in 2011). The previous gauges were a composite material cut by a flat bed cutting robot. I changed materials a few times over the years, but the production was always pretty similar. The gauges were quite delicate and very vivid colors were never possible.

Gen3 gauges are laser cut from aerospace polymer and digitally screen printed to create a dial face that exceeds OEM quality. Using spot color printing, the gauges feature extremely vivid red zones and translucent black warning light areas. They’re also extremely tough and can be cleaned with water or chemicals. They should be pretty world-proof, but time will tell on that one.

Digital screen printing means small changes to the artwork can be done on a special-order basis instead of being locked into an existing physical silkscreen that can’t be easily changed. Sure, a true screen-printed gauge will have a slight edge in quality, but I’d rather be able to do special orders than lock myself into a huge archive of screen prints.

I’m confident when I say these are the best gauges being produced in the world today.

Gen2 above

http://revlimiter.net/blog/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/gen2-3-590x394.jpg

These are the JNC gauges that Sharka has been wearing for over the past year. They’re quite good and are one of my favorite designs. They feel very harmonious behind the wheel. I’m not in a hurry to change them to a new design.

So since I liked the design so much, it seemed like a no-brainer to do a direct apples-to-apples comparison between the Gen2 and Gen3 gauges.

I tried my best to have the same lighting and same exposure between the swapping gauges in my cluster.

Gen 3 above.

http://revlimiter.net/blog/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/gen3-3-590x394.jpg

It’s not immediately obvious what the differences are. I’ll try to sum up.

Gen 2 – true matte surface. No translucent blacks. No white inks. Blade cut on a machine after being printed. About 2mm radius possible error. Required hand finishing.

Gen 3 – OEM textured semi-gloss surface. Translucent spot colors. White ink. Laser cut prior to printing. About .3mm radius possible error. No hand finishing needed.

But a better comparison can be done by laying the gauges next to each other.

http://revlimiter.net/blog/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/gen2-v-gen3-1.jpg

http://revlimiter.net/blog/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/gen2-v-gen3-2.jpg

You can see what’s going on here a lot more easily.

The Gen 2 gauges look rather dull in comparison. I’ve made thousands of them. I’m very proud of them and they were always the best gauges I could produce. But with my new machinery…

Gen 3 has much better colors, materials, and accuracy. They actually exceed OEM gauge quality.

I’m really proud, you guys.

Gen2 lighting

http://revlimiter.net/blog/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/gen3-4-590x345.jpg
Gen3 lighting

The best and brightest lighting I was ever able to achieve was with my Gen2 gauges. The Gen2.5 used a tougher material that showed a bit better colors and was a little more resilient to moisture, but it didn’t allow quite as much light through.

The Gen3 material allows MORE light through than the Gen2!

As I said above, I’m SO happy to finally be able to use this tech and make these gauges. I’ve dreamed of this for at least three years.

http://revlimiter.net/blog/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/DSC_2448-590x394.jpg

Let me try to think of a few questions and answer them…

Yes – NC gauges are coming. I needed these tools and the knowledge and experience in their use before I could produce NC gauges. I expect to have some in my store in less than a month.

Yes – NA and NB gauges are here. Anything ordered in the past week or so has been filled with a Gen3 gauge. I have to update ALL of the photos and pages in my store to reflect this. I’ve done a handful of NA gauge pages at the time of this writing.

No – Civic/Suburban/Supra gauges are not out. But they might be in the near future. I’m hoping to be able to expand and fill more clusters besides just Miatas soon.

…. and that’s all I can think of.

Wow that does look much better, and I actually like the textured finish! Its more OEM+

Once I get the car sorted out in the move ill have to order a set for my Miata. Excellent work Adam!

I'll update this thread as I get updated artwork in the store.

If you order gauges from today forward, you will probably receive Gen3 gauges! I've got about half of the designs already ported over to the new printer. I just haven't had a chance to update the pix on my site yet. I'm working on the more complex designs like Fallen and DOGE right now. Once I have those working, I'll have the NA and NB pretty much sorted.

Prototipo NA (http://revlimiter.net/store/gauges-prototipo-na.php)
Designed to work with a smaller than stock steering wheel. These work well for anything from 330mm to about 300mm. If you've got a 280mm or smaller wheel, you'd probably benefit from doing a special order and rotating the scales a bit more.

Stirling NA (http://revlimiter.net/store/gauges-stirling.php)
Inspired by the 40s and 50s racing cars, especially one driven by a Sir Stirling Moss.

Amazing! I love it when people always try to improve and move forward rather than settle on what they already have achieved.

Do you think these would justify a new order, even when someone has a set of fully functional set of your previous gauges?

The textured finish really pops and matches the gauges seen in the NB and later clusters. They really glow when installed.

and thanks!!

Totally up to each owner. Of course, I'd love to make new gauges for everyone who already has a set. But the earlier gauges should still work fine.

Thank you sir!!! And yeah, I'm really proud of the side by side comparison. I need to dig out some Gen1 gauges and do a torture test on some old Gen2/2.5/3s to show how each holds up.

So glad I haven't got a set for Misfire yet! Super excited! Congrats, Adam! :drinkto:

Thank you!!! Yeah, I'm glad you held off too. And NB HVAC will be coming shortly. :)

I can in some cases. The colors are vastly different on the new printer. For example, I've been working on my Fallen gauge set for over a week now and still have not recreated the colors to my liking.

I could probably re-create some custom gauges from the past but the cost might be enormous.

I donno... yours are one of the finest sets I ever made. You COULD upgrade that beautiful set, but I'd not be after you to do it.

Yup! Prices for everything remain the same. The material cost is similar, so I don't need to raise prices on the gauges.

Awesome! And the NB HVAC news make me happy, as I was just about to order a set from RS Products (which I will not). Is it possible to have "ghost" high-beam indicator in a creme tacho?

Props man. One thing that always made me nervous was how delicate the printed surface was on the Gen2 gauges. It would seem these new Gen3 gauges shouldn't have any problems with fingerprints and the like.

What about needle stops? Does installation still require removal of your existing needle stops and super glueing them onto the new gauge faces? How many times can you do this before the needle stops are worn out and looking haggard? I'm thinking about updating my Gen2 M2-1028 style gauges to a new Gen3 style.

Adam is the best when it comes to his relentless pursuit of perfection for product quality and as many of you know first hand, has an unrivaled approach to customer service.

When I'd heard Gen3 gauges were on the horizon I knew I'd have to wait a little while longer to swap gauges in the BRG. My set of Gen3 Fighter gauges arrived and are in. What can I say. They are exceptional. The detail in real life has an even bigger impact than the pictures show. Since my potato (and its operator) take terrible pictures I won't blemish this post with my jpg's but will post em up in my build(s) thread.

RevLimiter knocks it out of the park. Again.

It really depends on the gauge design. Most of my gauges do not allow the beam indicator to stay on the tach face since the corner indicator mod makes that unnecessary. But if the design allows room for the huge high beam silo without covering any numbers or scale, then yes.

It's been about 3 years since I forced customers to glue a needle stop onto their gauge face. The "new" dials have a precision cut hole in the face to allow you to poke the stopper through. That's been the norm since around 2014 when a local shop started carrying the gauges.

As for fingerprints, gloves still need to be worn with the new dials when installing. Greasy prints on them will still show and it's still hard to clean grease off. But unlike the previous ones, these CAN be cleaned.

Hmm, maybe you have older gauges than mine, none of mine had to be glued. You just pushed them from behind and they clicked in place

Yup. The last few thousand customers got those too. :) Much easier to install and far less destroyed gauges from glue incidents.

awesome work Adam!

NA HVAC panels are indeed being upgraded. I've got a few Gen3 ones in hand now. I'm not sure if I'll take pix of the new ones since HVAC panel photos are ridiculously difficult to take... But yeah, they'll all be Gen3 ones once I blow out some of my Gen2 stock in an upcoming sale.

After reviewing Adam's excellent lighting comparison, I'm left with one (I hope) simple question:

Why no pictures/examples of white/clear Gen3's with OE bulbs/green condoms?

I should have asked this prior to Sharksgiving, but here I am.

If this is an oversight, and you have the time... any chance you have some Version 1002's you could demo this with?

Thanks, sorry for the terrible timing, I'm sure you're busy. -Matt

No chance of this until many months from now. Sorry. I've not even been able to answer my custom order emails. There's dozens sitting. There's over 100 in the queue. There's MANY more standard orders than that in the regular order queue.

They look pale green and pretty horrible. Sorry... just not too great with the stock condoms and white lighting.

Every time I see a new set I can't believe my eyes because they just get better and better each year!!

This is the most accurate possible homage to the original M2-1028 gauges as possible. It took me years and 4 full redesigns to get this level of accuracy.

In white lighting, same as the original M2 gauges.

Ok now you have me thinking I ought to upgrade. I probably have your Gen1 M2-1028 mph gauges. I never paid attention and didn't realize the M2-1028 had white lighting and not green. Did you just take the bulb condoms off or are you using LEDs for these pics?

Kyle,

UPGRADE RIGHT NOW !!!!

The new Generation 3 faces are light years ahead of everything else!!!

What can I say here, Adam @ Revlimiter.net is THEE MAN when it comes to custom gauges. I have seen his work on some other nice cars in the bay area, however this is my first time seeing his brand NEW Version (Generation 3) gauges in person. Wow, this new version is just spectacular in person, with the wrinkle finish, richer colors, better lighting, and more depth in the numbers, and a more durable material he is using now, its just crazy how great these look!! :frantic:

All I can say is do yourself a favor and go buy some Revlimiter gauge faces now, dont think about it any longer! If you have older REV faces, or Dewa faces, just sell them and buy his new version, you cannot go wrong!!

I tried to take photos of mine, but heck even Adam's photos dont do these faces justice, you really have to see these in person!! Thank you Adam for such a great product for our Miatas!!

My first custom set was printed this weekend and is safely in the hands of UPS. Too excited to wait and get them installed before sharing.

It started with two core elements. An Omega Speedmaster I received as a gift linked to an incredible project I worked on over twenty years ago at the very beginning of my career. It’s the only watch I’ve worn since…

That and critically for me, finding a way to incorporate my brother Dan’s initials so we could really make this a tribute to him. He had an incredible attention to detail so there was a lot between the two elements we had to work from.

Adam and I did a ton of back and forth to talk about the details and I consistently was blown away by his different ideas. His design time was over six hours and I can’t be more thankful that he put up with all my feedback and suggestions along the way.

The center of the Omega has a guilloche pattern that I never imagined Adam could even possibly recreate. But of course he did. He actually did before I even had the chance to ask him if such a thing was possible. The font for all the dials is perfect. Speedo and Tach both mirrored the numbers on the watch face down to the slight yellow tint that the luminescence gave. The gas, oil and temp gauges pull the same font from other parts of my Chronometer. The Oil gauge at the top mirrors the top gauge on my Chrono down to the red numbers and specifically how the markers are denoted. Fuel and temp also use fonts from the letters and numbers of the smaller gauges on my watch. I asked Adam to design the gauges to accommodate my AWD metal overlays but given the finished product I don’t expect I will ever cover up the Speedo and Tach given how they turned out.

I could not be more touched by these. For me, they are perfect and to Dan I am certain he would have been very proud. Proud and excited that someone like Adam was out there to be able to tackle a project like this with such incredible results.

Adam has also kindly added them to his custom gauge page here. He remains one of the best contributors to our community, a dear friend and an incredibly talented human being. Thank you again and a million times more Adam.

Quick update as I finally got them installed into my own cluster. Adam’s work is unrivalled and the Gen 3 gauges raised the bar to another level. Having had the privilege to collaborate on a very personal design with him was amazing. Any expectations I may have had were blown away and I couldn’t be happier.

That guilloche pattern raises the bar to the next level. These are like 50 billion times better than the cheap white indiglo gauges that were predominant in the 1990s when our cars where new. We really have come a long way since then thanks to Adam.
