Join us for the Jzilla Trackdays before the Gap powered by Rspeed event on August 2nd at Atlanta Motorsports Park!

We will keep the pricing low as this is a weekday event. MX5's will take over Atlanta Motorsports Park before the annual gathering at Deal's Gap. This is open to other car groups but instructed group is limited to MX5 owners.

Novice instruction is reserved for MX5 drivers first and will be open to the public if it does not fill up.

NA/NB must have a 4 point approved roll bar. Please check with event organizers and staff beforehand if you have questions.

NC/ND may run with the stock rollover protection, but will be restricted to tires with a UTQG of 101 and higher. Below that, we require an approved aftermarket rollbar.

Instructed Groups are also restricted to tires UTQG greater than 100.

Registration ends on July 28, 2018 11:59 PM EDT

It should be a righteous jam we hope grows to become its own destination event. :) Ideally, we would love to outgrow AMP and see it turn into a weekend event at Road Atlanta. We think AMP is the perfect track for Miatas and one of the premiere roadcourses in the US.

Track dummy question...Is that wheel to wheel racing or timed?

Sidenote: I was going with a "Deuce" roll bar for looks but that seems to limit what I can do at track days. I have decided to now go with one that could be recognized by track organizations. It is more fun to drive than look at a car!

kung fu jesus
04-12-2018, 08:13 AM
Neither. HPDE is non-racing, non-timed.

You can time your own laps if you like. This is about education and testing your skills in the safe confines of a track environment in a friendly atmosphere. You will be on the track with other cars, you are likely to pass or be passed. This event, if you are in the instructed novice group, will pair you with an instructor who will help you familiarize yourself with the finer points of being on a track, improving your technique, answering your questions, and providing further instruction about primary performance driving principles. There will also be some casual group instruction to introduce you those principles. Some of these may include threshold braking, weight transfer, proper safety, passing and being passed, etc.

I encourage novices and intermediate drivers to ask for rides with other advanced drivers to see how they take certain lines. You can get a good feel for how certain modifications and skill enhance a particular car this way. As a novice, you can also request other instructors to ride with you later in the day to glean more information or tips.

HPDE is the introduction to advanced track activities like time trials/time attack, wheel to wheel racing.

Thanks for the detailed explanation. I do understand the concept of HPDE, I just did not know what your Atlanta event was all about.
If I can get my drivetrain sorted out I will probably try a HPDE at Waterford or Gingerman raceway as a primer. I can probably get away with a set of pads and good brake fluid to get started.

It would be awesome to drop the wife off with my daughter in Chattanooga and go to your event and the dragon.

Here are some videos of AMP from different Miatas to show what it's like to drive the track and what Jzilla HPDEs at AMP are like:

https://youtu.be/cerSKTI1aic

https://youtu.be/CklGBmn1eps

This is James Marcellana (aka "Jzilla") describing what his events are about. It is unique compared to those I have done, and he tries to model them on the camaraderie and fun of M@LSR.

https://youtu.be/WL_c_4sdfXE

I would be happy to go over any questions or concerns you have to help you decide! :)

Jzilla hosted an FRS/BRZ HPDE the day before their Deals Gap event last year and it was a LOT of fun! My only vested interest is to grow this event, give those of us east of the Mississippi a chance to experience the fun of M@LRS closer to a national Miata gathering. Autocross has been staged during previous M@TG events, but never the thrill of lapping the world-class tracks so near. Personally, I'd love to see this grow to where we can do it at Road Atlanta (hallowed ground for American motorsports). I think if we can, maybe with Mazda's forthcoming presence in nearby Huntsville, this could be a complimentary event to the M@LRS. :)

Awesome! Would love to see you there, Anthony! :)

AMP is not too hard on brakes, but there are two heavy braking zones. T1 and T6. I see 95-105mph going into T1 off the long front straight, ~70-75 into T6. Both are downhill.

Let me know if you have any questions. I may be busy at this event, but the car won’t be as much a concern as Charlotte was because I’ll be closer to home and it’s a place I know well.

I reached out to AJ Schramm with a couple of questions about my rollbar and being ok for the event but I haven't heard back yet. Is this geared more towards beginners and instruction? This will be possibly my first event and not sure how this will go with all the information being thrown at me.

We are gearing it towards everyone, but we have instructors especially for novices.

The neat thing about an HPDE with so many Miatas, is you can get a chance to see and feel what different Miata configurations can do. If you see someone with a mod(s) you are considering, chat them up, ride with them in their car, get a feel for it, get real feedback.

What are your rollbar questions?

I read on Bethania's website that the M2 Sport meets SCCA Time Trial and Solo safety requirements when equipped with diagonal bracing. I don't have those. Will this be ok for this event? And as far as the "broomstick" test. I am not sure that I do fit under with the helmet.

What would you say the average skill level is at the different run-group levels compared to, say, NASA or SCCA?

kung fu jesus
05-24-2018, 04:20 PM
Our groups and experience levels compares favorably to SCCA and NASA

Novices (Green Group) are first-timers, or those who have run maybe 3 HPDEs or less (unsubstantiated history). No passengers except instructors. Restricted passing. We do allow Green Drivers to "bump up" to Blue, but only if they are vetted and certified by the lead instructors.

Uninstructed novices (Blue Group) have experience (a traceable history of events with Jzilla or from motorsportreg.com), allowed to have passengers. Prescribed passing zones.

Yellow are experienced drivers (10 or more HPDEs). Sometimes red drivers will slide down into red if it's crowded, or they want to do testing. I will usually run Yellow or Red depending on my duties that day. I will often run in Blue as a sort of "quality control" to make sure rules are being followed, or to watch for drivers who need help.

Red drivers are for very experienced drivers (W2W veterans, HPDE or TT vets). Most of the instructors are in red group, some may be from Yellow Group.

White Group are for staff members who have duties a the event where they may not have a regular time frame to drive. They can go out in any group.

AMP has FIA lighting (digital flagging) along with corner workers at stations. It also has CCTV that covered the ENTIRE track, so Track Control sees everything (and with AJ working Control, he rarely misses anything). AJ is the SCCA Competition Chair for this region. We hire him to oversee Track Control, very professional, excellent guy.

No passing in any groups without a point-by, we run a polite, gentlemanly program. :) No R-compound tires for novices. All Jzilla instructors are certified by the Motorsport Safety Foundation. This is something we require of our instructors, not all HPDE promoters do this. We also have a staff of professional safety crew on hand for the duration of the event (fire and medical).

Run two similar seats/harnesses or put the stock seat back in and use the OE belt.

If you choose to run just the raceseat and harness for yourself, that's fine too, but you cannot have a passenger.

It was one of the RX8s. Owned by a shop that wanted to prove the stock radiator could handle hard usage. Result? Overheated, coolant on the track, blown engine.

Here's a video of one of my sessions, I think the same one as yours. I suspect that there was something around T11 as well as it was extra-slippery, even accounting for rain.

First combined session

My comments:
The facility: AMP is a motorsports country club (with a base membership cost of $10000), not a motorsports competition facility. You can definitely tell the difference, from the lack of on-site food facility to the fact the main building contains a couple conference rooms and carpeting, but no large track map. The split paddock is a little odd, but the paddock itself is small enough it's not a huge problem. The single set of restrooms for us plebs is a little strange too. The on-site shop holds mostly driver safety gear, some misc. vehicle safety gear, nothing in the way of spare parts or typical trackday stuff - couldn't even sell me shop towels. The owner is a really cool guy, was nice enough to chat with me about seats (and their fitment into Miatas), and with a ton of racing experience. Racing Analytics is the on-site mechanics/tuning shop, with one focus on Spec Miatas. I hung out and chatted with them for about 20 minutes, and they did a no-extra-charge swap of pads and rotors on my Miata in about an hour without batting an eye. I'll be trailering the Miata back down to have them do some race prep work in the future.

The track: I can't decide if AMP was designed by a sadist, or an elitist. It is a highly technical track favoring lower-powered vehicles. There is a huge amount of elevation change, and every other corner is a blind, off-camber, tightening radius turn designed to test your throttle control and vehicle weight handling. However, there is plenty of well-designed runoff and safety barriers that make an off-road excursion less scary than it might otherwise be. Quite fun.

The event: Almost all of my trackdays have been with national amateur competition motorsports orgs, so my bias of comparison slants towards that. First off, I have to say I was really disappointed by the last-minute changes to rules and schedules. Many people (including myself) were coming from several states away, and changing requirements last-minute is REALLY unprofessional. Any changes not forced on the hosting org. should be locked out AT LEAST a week before go-day. The ancillaries were very nice - coffee, donuts, stickers, pizza for lunch, giveaways, etc. Not something I would expect at a "typical" trackday event at all; and with a REALLY low cost of entry I suspect the sponsors were heavily involved in the final bill. The lack of paddock-wide announcements was a real hassle; keeping track of the run groups' orders was all based on the watch. This hurt especially when crashes and spills on track caused delays and re-ordering of run groups. There seemed to be a relatively low number of entrants, which was nice for keep the track clear and allowing movement between run groups. The sessions were set at 15 minutes, which I really feel is too low. Not counting the warmup and cooldown laps, I was seeing 6 hot laps, depending on traffic. I would have preferred fewer, 20 or 25-minute sessions. Driver's meeting seemed fairly typical, except going over instruction better left for the classroom (like flag meanings). Classroom instruction for the beginner's group was... odd, I'll say. Spending the first classroom session having the safety gear shop owner talking about safety gear, and not a driving instructor talking about driving safety issues, had me shrugging my shoulders. My in-car instructor, I have no negative comments with; but individual instructor quality always varies person-to-person. Once I told him my experience level he was happy to bump me up a group and really only had an issue with my habit of using lift-off oversteer to correct my lines midcorner (which I totally understand, it's not something a typical novice, or even intermediate on this track, should be doing).

Sig, thanks so much for your feedback! We had some unexpected issues arise and some of our changes were controversial, to say the least. They were made with safety in mind and they were not made flippantly.

The first sessions were 15 minutes, the rest were 20 unless an on-track incident occurred. When one does happen, we use abbreviated sessions to catch up to the schedule.

We post schedules and email them out. For run groups, their are flags posted at Pit Out and the Tower that indicate which group is on the track (red, yellow, blue, green).

There are also restrooms in the clubhouse upstairs, BTW. There is also *typically* a map at the bottom, near the clubhouse, facing the track, but I suppose it has been locked away because of the weather. There was one in the classroom, too.

I would like permission to forward your comments to the Jzilla staff so we can implement improvements for next year, but only with your approval.

Sure, I have no problem with it. I'd be happy to discuss more if there are any questions, too. In response to your responses: The posted schedule was fine, until there was an incident that bumped everything around. I wasn't the only person in the paddock asking who was going out when and in what order by the afternoon. I was parked right next to pit-out, so I ended up talking to the gentleman covering that station and yelling back up the paddock what was going on. The flags being posted at pit out for whatever run group was heading out next was definitely something that should have been covered at the driver's meeting :)

The track map placements is more of a facility thing than a Jzilla event thing. The drivers' meeting room/main room not having track maps I just found odd, but again, it's a country club, not a competition venue.

Here's a video of the session before the other one I posted. I think this was the dryest session I had all day.

EDIT: Fixed. This was the driest session I had all day.

Excellent work, Danny! Does the lower light and spray make it more difficult to capture the cars at speed?

I love the shots! Thanks for being out there. The spray coming off the cars gives everything a total different visual dynamic.

No actually! If anything it made it easier. Well not the rain, but the consistent grey sky helps because now you’re not fighting with shadows and having to shoot the cars from one side of the track based on where the sun is.
