Hi there
i'm Gianni from Italy, someone here on the forum knows me
in 2006 i bought my mx5, a '91 v-spec brg in good condiction
in Italy were imported 150 units with p/s, p/w, hardtop, lsd and momo stering wheel in leather, the italian version did not have a/c, the wooden nardi wheel and gearknob and are not numbered

a few pics

http://i54.tinypic.com/16aa3cl.jpg

http://i55.tinypic.com/ibzb6r.jpg

My first intention was to create something classic
the first mods are
robbins 3 top windows
motolita mark 3, les leston knob and wooden hand brake
zoom sidelight, rear fog and fuel cap
oem tonneau cover
mcintosh stereo and amplificator
and a set of oem wire wheels bought in UK

http://i53.tinypic.com/149wjsy.jpg

http://i55.tinypic.com/2r1zi1d.jpg

http://i55.tinypic.com/23gxkdw.jpg

then plans have changed, thanks to the MX5nutz and cr.net i know the world of jdm culture and ...

a lucky find on ebayusa, a set of aerodramatics door opener (in metal)

http://i56.tinypic.com/s3hjlu.jpg

then i find a set of v_spec2 panel on ebayuk, not in perfect condition, but i have retrimmed, I had two spare seats in tan, and have used the rear piece in vinil for repair the panel :trigger:
and finaly i used a set of Rikamae vintage leather straps :worship:

http://i50.tinypic.com/30to38z.jpg

then I decided to change style, something more late'60 early '70 gt cars, for my interior
i started with instrument and between kg-works,AWD and RS-products options, i decided this combination
AWD panel, i have painted in satin gloss black because the written under the lights are totaly different from the italian scheme
RS-Products smiths type with short dial, veri similar to the old smiths and veglia-borletti instruments
and finaly a set of RS-Refine "binoculars" homemade in limited production by an japanese guy

i decided to change the wheel with a motolita mk4 in leather, the gearknob with KG-Works with snall mazda vintage logo on the top and Zoom hand brake

after 4 years of research, i have received this (thanks to James :worship:)

http://i53.tinypic.com/bjimj9.jpg

i picked up 3 smiths gauges: clock, vacuum, voltmeter and a black LHD crashpad

i think putting them in the TAN crashpad, but I tried to hole the black and distance the gauges of half cm.

I finally decided to fit into the crash pad in tan :

while work on the engine will start this spring,I dedicated myself to a project inspired from smac's thread
http://www.mx5nutz.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=57248&st=100.

one of my favorite jdm bit are the Zoom/RS console, but with this exchange rate the coste are prohibitive, about 600€ with ship and tax, a little too much for a piece of fiberglass with a panel of aluminum glued, and a pillow covered with leather

http://i43.tinypic.com/21o8rgh.jpg

http://i43.tinypic.com/nvqqvo.jpg

practice is inspired by the interiors of the GT Golden Age, like a cross between Miura and Elan

The first step is to build the frame

http://i39.tinypic.com/2cycfc.jpg

http://i41.tinypic.com/4t36tt.jpg

to understand the size, I overlap the oem

http://i40.tinypic.com/2cqjw49.jpg

http://i43.tinypic.com/2qbegwp.jpg

some adjustment because the part that is screwed to the console radio is wider than the rear

Then I applied the supports for the panels that I'm going to stick

http://i39.tinypic.com/21n1iy8.jpg

and finally the frame is complete wit armrest, next step glue the panels :trigger:

Ah as a coating, I want to use the leather of this vintage jacket or the tartan of my Belstaff on the rear

http://i40.tinypic.com/21cvyxk.jpg

then I went to the carpenter to take the shaped panels

http://i43.tinypic.com/zx6tud.jpg

http://i44.tinypic.com/11a98wm.jpg

Then I added a piece to cover the hanbrake like the original Zoom

http://i40.tinypic.com/20j06rb.jpg

http://i39.tinypic.com/2we9rmh.jpg

I went to the body-shop, to refine the support of the armrest

http://i41.tinypic.com/qy9474.jpg

http://i44.tinypic.com/54g4g5.jpg

http://i43.tinypic.com/3508cuv.jpg

this afternoon i started to recover the console with the leather

I collected the leather from taylor, to make the stitching and then recovered the armrest

http://i40.tinypic.com/1zwdwmc.jpg

these days I thought about doing something to the console radio

WOW! Love those seats!!! How are they to sit in for long drives? And, are the seat belts affected by the side lip?

Very nice but maybe it's just me. The quilt lines reflects too much traffic? Probably bring back the old center console and tombstone?

The center console is definitive but i think that the door panels are too over the top, i will change with the nakamae version (not qulted)

I'm not sure how you gonna tie the quilted pattern with the Nakamae seat center horizontal lines design. In the past the quilted pattern sort of softened the OEM look plus your artistic rendition of italian NA6 tombstone and ala Zoom center console appointed with tan and black leather which IMO became the focal point. Now the new seat lines is posing a challenge altho the grommets is blending with the Motolita and the extra gauges.

As to the door panels, well the lines are not blending well with the seat lines probably why it look over the top. So maybe a solid door card may accent the seats well.

Personally, the closer you can bring it the look of the interior in page #2 the more these seats will shine.

 Absolutely stunning. Do they specialize in Automotive, Marine or ? Any pointers would help as I haven't managed to track down any recommendations for company's in SoCal that are expert at this caliber of work but am convinced there has to be local options vs sending the LHD goods to Nakamae to have them perform the work or DIY with RedLine.

Peter, SOCAL has so many excellent upholstery shops, you should have no issue finding one to help you. Car shows are a great place to get references from car owners of work that impresses you. If you know the style/design you want, gather images and bring them to the shop(s) you decide to ask for a quote. The more they know what you want, the better they can help.
