View Full Version : RE: Wonders of Plastidip

Has anyone else (besides me) discovered (and used) this stuff? It is available in spray cans in matte black from Home Depot and the like, but in colors via mailorder. It is actually a form of latex rubber, and completely reversible if you don't like the results. No pictures just yet, but I blacked out the front and rear Mazda logos and the front chrome grill surround. I am not sure how long it will last, but some folks say up to 3-4 years if applied properly. Heck some folks have done whole cars with it. Check out http://www.dipyourcar.com for more details.

I have had 2 cans sitting around for months. Bought it planning on dipping my emblems and wheels. Still plan on doing it but now I have to wait for warmer weather.

Yep, I discovered it. Doors were all the pumpkin orange color except for top part.

How thick does plastidip spray on? Can you do a 2 tone color on a single part without having the accent color bulge noticeably further than the base color?

It's thin stuff.

this looks pretty cool! how easily would this peel off? say if i were to spray my wheels. i have seen how it comes off, but i wouldnt want it to come off too easily. i guess i could try it. for 6 bucks and completely reversible, who cares?!?

Grumpy
02-22-2012, 12:58 AM
Just don't try to paint over it. Then its not permanent but its a bitch to take off.

diabeetus
02-22-2012, 01:04 AM
paint over it? like with different kind of spray paint? also, thats good that its a bitch to get off. i was imagining, that because its basically rubber(?), that even your finger nail would leave a wrinkle in the paint.

Grumpy
02-22-2012, 10:43 AM
Yes with a regular spray paint. Someone had wanted to test different colors on their wheels and put down a layer of plastidp first, then sprayed the color, thinking it would just peel off that way. It didn't.

awesome! good, fun facts. i need to get on this! i want to try my belt-line moulding on my doors. they are looking a little grim. i wonder if this stuff, will even help the seal? mine is shriveled a little, and this "dip", being rubber based, might do the trick for now. at least make it look better :ninja:

The stuff works pretty well. I used it for a few things on my NA. The two main things were the headlight surrounds and wiper arms. Here are some pics of the finished products. The wiper arms need to be done again because they got hit by the buffer during detailing.

http://i611.photobucket.com/albums/tt194/paulsulja/The%20Smurf/017.jpg

I have an extra can sitting around that I was going to use on my DIY hardtop spoiler, but that little project was put on hold since the hardtop isn't even on the car

Will be using this to cover up some of the chrome on the exterior of a friend's NC in the next little bit as well. That should look pretty good when it's done.

richterat83
03-02-2012, 12:17 PM
was planning on doing the headlight surrounds as well once they come in.

I've already done my wiper arms and worked great

psulja
03-02-2012, 12:21 PM
I was really happy with the wiper arms just because of how bad they were before:
http://i611.photobucket.com/albums/tt194/paulsulja/The%20Smurf/004.jpg

And the PO of my car was really careless when trying to apply wax so the headlight surrounds were covered in that nasty white residue.

Tekel
03-02-2012, 12:58 PM
For something like wiper arms I would probably use regular spray paint. Plastidip is best for temporary fixes so you can revert back if needed.

psulja
03-02-2012, 01:07 PM
What do you mean? It works fine over long periods of time. It also has a really nice finish that looks great on the exterior for parts like that. And when I have a can of this stuff laying around I'd rather use it than go out and spend money on some spray paint to get similar results.

Also used it on my brother's protege5 on the lower portion of the rear bumper (valence I guess?) and I did that over a year ago, it still looks like new even after a Canadian winter.

did both mine and my wife's Protege5's as well (although it didn't hold up to getting hit with the buffer)

psulja
03-02-2012, 03:04 PM
masking tape is your friend, you shouldn't be hitting any trim like that with the buffer, just like the PO did with my headlight surrounds. And unfortunately like my detailer did with my wiper arms (didn't really expect to hit them but it was unavoidable).

richterat83
03-02-2012, 03:05 PM
i didn't do the buffing, the wife took her car to the car wash and had them wash/wax/buff (first and only time considering they also stripped off all her clear coat)

psulja
03-02-2012, 03:08 PM
ahh, I guess that makes sense then.. Yea, I don't really trust any of those places, I get mine done by a friend that is a professional detailer that does really good work lol, it's nice knowing people.

If you want to plastidip your wheels, make sure you spray at least 2 THICK coats. Otherwise the heat will make it peel, and it'll fall apart when you try and take it off.

Plastidipped one of my 6ul's for a test fit on the car to see if its the look I want. Will be mounting a tire today. If i decide I like the look of the wheel and decide to make them my dd wheels, I will get them painted gunmetal. But for now I wanted an option to see it in person and reversible if I decide I want to sell them.

I don't think that'd be the problem (I didn't even clean off my badges before doing it). How thick did you spray it on? Make sure to do light coats.

I don't even know what you would have done to get that weird pattern in it.. So weird.

well i was gonna post earlier the reason, but he had said he already watched the how-to vids.

the reason this happened is because he was shaking the spray can back and forth instead of using long, steady, consistent paint strokes, going from the front of the hood all the way to the back in one pass.

im betting if the OP does a couple more coats with the above paint technique, it turns out a lot better

psulja
03-29-2012, 05:33 PM

Plastidipped my badges. Will get some pictures this evening. Biggest problem I had was I sprayed some layers to thick which cause it to puddle and fuse the plastidip on the emblems to the plastidip on the car so it all peeled up. Was alao a PIA to peel off in tiny areas such as on my mazdaspeed badge.

Tekel
04-04-2012, 09:52 AM
One thing I learned about doing this is do thin layers. If you spray a layer to thick, it will connect the dip on the emblem to the dip on the car and when you attempt to peel it off the car, it also peel the emblem.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7194/6897364754_2f2be34574_c.jpg

Here you can see where I wasn't able to peel it off in some of the narrow places. It is also peeling up around some of the letters because it was attached to the car and emblem. Going to respray it.
