I have always been a VW guy, always. Don't get me wrong, I have owned other cars along the way but have always found my way back to VW's with one exception, Miata's. I never really had a strong interest in Japanese cars even though I owned a few over the years and was stationed in Japan for a year in the Marines. What got me hooked was my friend Tim's 99 NB. He let me take his for couple of runs at a local auto-x in the summer of 2003 and that was it, I was hooked. I bought my first Miata, a black 01 NB the following year. I sold that one a few years later and moved on to a 95 NA. I really enjoyed that car buy wanted something with more power so I ditched the NA for a Mazdaspeed NB and promptly added all the standard bolt ons. The car was definitely quick but was missing the simplicity of the NA. My wife and I were expecting our first child in the fall of 09 so I sold off the Mazdaspeed to save us some money. I really missed having a Miata in the garage so I went on the hunt again for the cleanest example of an NA I could find. Right after my son's second birthday, I ran across a super clean 90 Mariner in Wisconsin. I took a ride up there that weekend and a deal was struck. I picked up the car the following weekend. The car came with full documentation since new, all receipts, everything. I am really looking forward to making it my own. I have been collecting parts since I purchased it.

These are unfortunately the only pictures I have so far but I will add more when changes begin come spring time. The car does have an original Sebring supercharger on it so I am satisfied with the current power output. The suspension is terrible though so that will be on of the first thing to be changed in the next couple of months.

RS meter panel
Revlimiter 1028 gauges
RS classic switch
RS factory stage knob and brake handle
Momo Protipo wheel / Dakei hub
Club NA Eunos horn button
!njoy door pulls

Nice set of cars you've had. That's pretty much the spectrum of, colors, body styles, and performance. Your Mariner looks super clean; leather seat too! I will subscribe to this, waiting for updates.

Here are some long overdue updates. I actually had some free time this weekend to get some work done so here goes.

First and for most was to replace the factory steering wheel with something that had a retro look and feel to it. I chose a Momo Prototipo wheel, Eunos horn button on a Dakei hub. I added a 20mm LTM motorsport spacer to bring the wheel a bit closer to me.

http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/ab347/GripDriver/Miata/db67958b.jpg

Next up was to replace the factory radio with something a bit better sounding that had an aux in input. I chose a JVC KD-SH 55. I like that the faceplate has a brushed metal look to it, goes with the theme I am after. I used a DDM works radio surround with two gauge holes. I used a VDO 15psi boost gauge and a voltmeter. The car is mostly street driven and I really didn't need oil temp/pressure. I also replaced both upper and lower shifter boots, installed a Beatrush shifter bushing from Rev9 and added some turret oil since there was none.

The factory door pulls were next to go. They were replaced with !njoy pulls and Zoom door pockets. The added interior room and storage and both welcome additions. The retro look is nice as well.

http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/ab347/GripDriver/Miata/162443d6.jpg

The factory fuel door was replaced with a BSP classic lid. It is identical to the Zoom fuel lid from what I can tell.

I have always really liked the Zoom side markers but just couldn't justify the cost. They look very similar to what some Italian cars used back in the 60's and 70's so I did some research on what I could use. I finally settled on a pair of Fiat 500 side markers. The bonus is they can be had for less than $20 for reproduction units. I think they do the trick.

Last but not least came the hardest job. I purchased a set of 1028 gauges from Adam / Revlimiter at least six months ago. They have been collecting dust till today. This for me was the most nerve racking job I have done but Adam's excellent instructions really go a long way in making the job look easy. I highly recommend his gauges. I also installed a KGW meter panel that was purchased some time ago from Medition. The result IMO speaks for itself.

http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/ab347/GripDriver/Miata/0d638aa8.jpg

Unfortunately, the gauge hood broke upon disassembly so that will have to be replaced. More updates coming soon, stay tuned.

Eunos trim installed with a Redline leather shift boot with white stitch. I also installed the ebrake boot as well.

More progress today. I finally installed the inner door handles from Randy's group buy. They are amazing. All I need now is to track down some metal door cups.

http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/ab347/GripDriver/Miata/db0ebb01.jpg

Door all back together.

http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/ab347/GripDriver/Miata/21a4c2cc.jpg

I also installed the Roadster sill plates at the same time, much better than the plastic versions.

Next up was the runabout mirrors, they really add that retro look to the car.

http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/ab347/GripDriver/Miata/a5830288.jpg

http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/ab347/GripDriver/Miata/32b33844.jpg

Jet Stream headlight cover was up next. The install was straightforward but the plastic shroud did need some minor trimming for a proper fit.

Last but not least was the rennmetal tow hook. Adds a sporty look IMO. I am no sold on this style yet so I may change it out for something else.

Adam's HVAC face plate compared to the original, quite the improvement I would say.

http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/ab347/GripDriver/Miata/4504d681.jpg

Center stack all back together, still waiting on my replacement gauge hood to be back together 100%. You can now see the RS Factory Stage shift knob and ebrake handle, RS classic switch, AWD HVAC face plate and aluminum vent rings and knobs. Big thanks to Rod @ Tetsuya, Max @ Rev9 and Adam @ Revlimeter for these excellent parts :) I think the interior came together quite nicely.

Next project up is a GV rear spoiler. I've had this sitting around for a while and wasn't sure if I was going to use it or not. I thought originally to leave it black but I'm going to paint it body color.

I had the Runabouts and BSP Classic fuel lid on my last NA as well, plus a few other tasty bits youve gone with. Your car is coming along very nicely!! A few details that seem a bit overkill to me are the blue painted centers on the wheels and having the Eunos and Roadster badges on the rear. Id stick with just one or the other of the badges personally (diggin the Eunos). Also, your car is crying out for TSI's, especially with the NACA headlight cover. Overall, very sharp!

The painted centers are what came on the wheels when new, they just happen to match the car :) I am planning on new wheels soon. I am considering TSI's, not sure which ones yet.

A couple of small updates. First and foremost, I have been a big fan of Revlimiter's retro window switches since they came out but my car does not have power windows. It does however have heated seats. I contacted Adam and asked if he was up for a custom switch project and thankfully, he was. I sent him my original switch and a few weeks later I had a retro seat heater switch in my hands built to the usual high quality Adam is known for. Thanks Adam!

http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/ab347/GripDriver/Miata/null-1-1.jpg

Secondly, I did manage to find a spare hour and install a replica R package rear lip.

That's it for now but more things are in the works over the winter.

Its a PCI bracket, the rear of the seat is probably 1/2" off the floor so its fairly low.

Thanks Matt. I have only seen that steering wheel once before. I believe it to be an old Benetton wheel because of the colored stitching. I was debating going with 1028 style mirrors but I'm still undecided. I think once I put the Wats on the car, everything will tie in together.

The powder coating really livened things up. I also installed a DDM intake today, what a major PITA. We'll see if it make a difference or not.

So lately I've been thinking of taking this in a different direction, undoing a lot of the retro touches for something more subtle. I'm still undecided though but I do know that I'm not happy with how everything looks at the moment. I have some deliberating to do.

Main reason I went in my 'M2' direction. People do a double take when they look over my miata - because it is a miata, but they cannot readily put their finger on the subtle differences.

Alright, time for a long over due update. First and foremost, I decided it was time for a touch of color on the inside. I purchased a set of Retro Modern door pull caps and modified them to suite my liking. I wasn't really happy how far out they say in their original form so I cut 1/4" of the back of each of them. I also replaced the set screw with a larger one for added stability. I added red Porsche pulls that I found on ebay for a splash of needed color. Overall, I think it came out great :)

http://i878.photobucket.com/albums/ab347/GripDriver/Miata/IMG_0176_zpsf5766518.jpg (http://s878.photobucket.com/user/GripDriver/media/Miata/IMG_0176_zpsf5766518.jpg.html)

Next up was the exterior. I've had the M2 mirrors on the car for some time now and have grown tired of them. It ws time for a change. I have always liked the the M2 1028 mirrors so I got a set with correct non slotted bases from yahoo.jp and long with wide angle glass to match. I still need to get the correct hardware, I'm using the runabout bolts for now. Overall, I'm happy with the look so far. I'm also thinking about changing out the fuel lid for something else or even going back to stock. Not sure on that one yet. More to come...

Always a fan of this car. Door pulls look good with the splash of color . . . this has me thinking. While I'm a fan of the runabout mirrors, I do like the body colored M2 1028 mirrors. They should mesh well with your body colored TSI's.

How are you liking the performance of your RS Active Headlights?

speedypenguin

Grip Driver
09-19-2013, 04:21 PM
I haven't driven the car yet with the new mirrors but I hope to do that tomorrow so I will report back on how well they perform. I still have not replaced the RHD headlights with correct LHD drive lights so the performance is a little lacking but I rarely drive at night. One of my many projects to do yet.

Well, it's been while since I posted an update so I figure its about time. I was putting some parts aside over the winter for a spring project and finally managed to get it all done. I apologize for not having pics of everything. First and foremost, I really needed to get rid of weak, 1.6 open diff. I sourced a completer torsen swap more than a year ago from a local Miata recycler. The install for the most part went smooth aside from ruining one wheel hub trying to pound the axle out. I sourced a replacement from our Mazda store. I also installed Garage Star diff bushings as well. Next up was the front end. Both tie rod boots were split so I chose to use R Package tie rod ends, no issues there with the install. I also replaced the ball joint boots since they were in bad shape.

Next up was a replacement for the radiator since I was still running an OEM one. Goodwin had a sale last year on Koyo's so I picked one up. Install was very simple and I topped it off with a Maruha radiator cap from YJP. I installed Mazdaspeed motor mounts to replace the originals at the same time.

While I was under the hood, I found a nice, polished fuse box cover from Top Miata. Looks great!

Next up was a little interior work with a Sazaire dress up kit, I installed the ignition lock cover and glovebox lock cover. Adds a bit of class I think.

Last but not least, I've been keeping a keen eye on YJP for the correct center caps for my Wats and finally managed to find a set after over a year of looking.

Overall, I am happy with the results, I still have a few things left to do this summer so more updates coming soon.

I have had a set of needle caps sitting around for over a year and since I had some spare time, I figured I would finally get this done. They did come on a set of NB needles so I had to separate them and glue them to mine. All said and done, the whole job took less that two hours (thanks to Adam's gauge face instruction's once again!) and made a nice change I would say.

Started working on removing the supercharger to fix an annoying exhaust leak from what I think is a blown gasket. Hopefully the header isn't cracked. All was going well till I reached the point of the belt tensioner setup. What a POS the original Sebring setup is! I got very annoyed very quickly and shelved the project for the time being. I ordered a TDR tensioner last night so I'll resume once I have that in had.

I managed to get one project taken of the list. My wife gave me a few hour break so I was able to install the Cappuccino washer bottle thanks to to Revlimiter's and YellowYata's instructions. All went as expected except for one thing thing. The early cars like mine apparently are missing a hole from the right side of the firewall. I ended up drilling my own hole and eliminated a bracket. Other than that, install went very smoothly. I think it added a nice improvement to the engine bay.

I finally have had a chance to get started on redoing the instrument cluster. I bought several item's from Adam months ago and since my second son was recently born, everything was put on the back burner till today. I had originally bought a set of Adam's 1028 gauge faces some time ago and those were fine till saw a set he had designed for another customer for his NB. I asked Adam if there was a chance to adapt these to an NA configuration and thankfully, it was able to be done. Here is about as far as I have gotten today, hopefully I'll have a bit more time to get to these tomorrow. I also installed Adam's lenses too since I was at it. More to come...

Looks awesome. Did you paint your needles?

they are indeed painted but it wasn't by me, I'm terrible at intricate work like that.

getting there slowly...

Took a break for a while as I got back into riding motorcycles. I picked up a project bike so the little time I did have went to that but now that weather is starting to turn, I am starting to refocus my attention.

Still have more to do but at least this is a start in the right direction.

Nice looking first gen Suzuki SV650! One of my favorite bikes (I had a 2002, I hit a deer with it). I have a KTM Duke IV 690 and an '03 SV1000N now... but the weight/tire size/balance/ergonomics of the 650 are hard to beat. Suzuki is finally bringing it back for 2017!

Liking the front end on the Miata, too... Clubman nose is a nice piece.

Thanks, I've wanted an SV for years and I much prefer the curvy to the pointy. The new SV is nice too!

Getting closer still, lights are all wired in and working but still a few more things to go. Front tow hook and license plate will both be gone soon.

Looks great. Did the lights come with the bumper or did you source them somewhere? I've been looking for beehive lights with accessible-from-the-front screws.

They did come with the bumper but they are Land Rover defender 90 lights. You can find them on eBay for a decent price.
