Figured I'd get around to making one of these now that I have some free time (aka procrastinating to do assignments). This won't be too much of a build thread because at this time I'm not doing many mods to the car but hopefully as time passes I'll be able to get some more stuff done to it.

In June 2010 I was looking around to see if I could find any cheap 240's and found one in NJ for $900. Brought it back home, did a bit of work to it (clutch because I only had 2nd, 4th, and 5th, put the interior back together since it was stripped, and a few other things). While it was parked for the winter I was trying to decide if I wanted to keep it or not. It was during this time that I drove a friend's 1999 Miata and realized just how much fun I was missing out on. Sure enough I posted the s14 up for sale and sold it a couple weeks later for $3700.

The S14:
http://i611.photobucket.com/albums/tt194/paulsulja/1995%20Nissan%20240SX/IMG_7862.jpg
http://i611.photobucket.com/albums/tt194/paulsulja/1995%20Nissan%20240SX/IMG_6976.jpg

The same day I sold the 240sx I put a deposit on a 1991 Mariner blue Miata that was 4,000km (2,500miles) away in Santee, CA that I had never seen before and just had a friend that lived in San Diego go take a quick look at it for me. Bought one-way tickets for my brother and I and within a week I was flying out to California, in the middle of the semester. Got there and drove the car around a bit, everything seemed to look good so I went ahead with the rest of the purchase. After a bit of confusion at the DMV because the car's original title was lost, everything got sorted out and I was on my way, getting ready to do a 4-day drive back home in a car I had never driven. Everything went well on the drive back, other than running low on the oil after forgetting to check it for two-days, or 22 hours, of driving. More details of the trip can be found in this thread. First picture back in Canada at home:

with the Smurf's little friend:
http://i611.photobucket.com/albums/tt194/paulsulja/The%20Smurf/SmurfonSmurf.jpg

The first order of business after getting the car back home was to take care of the zipper on the top. The zipper itself was fine but the material around it had ripped. To fix this I had a friend of my dad's who used to work in upholstery sew it up for me and then I used "Shoe-glue" and some strips of material to cover it up and strengthen it.

Stitched:
http://i611.photobucket.com/albums/tt194/paulsulja/The%20Smurf/Stitched.jpg

Finished:
http://i611.photobucket.com/albums/tt194/paulsulja/The%20Smurf/Finished2.jpg

After finishing it I left it closed for a few days so the glue could harden. Unfortunately since the smell was so bad I couldn't really drive the car much in those few days.

The next thing that needed to be changed was the horrible stock steering wheel. Hated driving around with such a big wheel. It really sucked for any hard driving, and the new wheel freed up some room on the driver's side.

Removing the stock one:

Getting ready to trim the clock spring:
http://i611.photobucket.com/albums/tt194/paulsulja/The%20Smurf/DSCN0474.jpg

Installed! No horn button at that time because I got the wheel for free from a friend and he didn't have the horn button anymore.
http://i611.photobucket.com/albums/tt194/paulsulja/The%20Smurf/DSCN0479.jpg

The wheel is a 330mm MOMO Champion on a MOMO hub.

I then had the car professionally detailed by a friend of mine to take care of some of the oxidation on the hood and all the swirls in general. I was amazed by the results.
A 50-50 of my hood:

A couple weeks later I shaved the raised letters on the exterior lights just to clean things up a bit, here's a quick example of one of the taillights.
http://i611.photobucket.com/albums/tt194/paulsulja/The%20Smurf/03-After.jpg

I drove the car like this for pretty much the rest of the year until about September when I really started to get bored of the 4x4 ride height. Being on a university student's budget I got Racelands and regretted it shortly after. At this time I also picked up some BMW bottlecaps with good tires because my current tires were completely dead and really noisy around any corners that I took somewhat quickly.

Doing shocks and springs on my friend's NB while doing the coilovers on the NA:
http://i611.photobucket.com/albums/tt194/paulsulja/Snapbucket/F98371C0-orig.jpg

Here is how the car looked around September of 2011:
http://i611.photobucket.com/albums/tt194/paulsulja/Snapbucket/A6A36B6C-orig.jpg
http://i611.photobucket.com/albums/tt194/paulsulja/Snapbucket/39FB5327-orig.jpg

I got sick of not being able to handle as well at that height and hated the ride of the racelands so when I went to put the car in storage in November I took them off and sold them. Currently the car is sitting on jackstands without shocks or springs as I try to decide what I want to do with it this year.
http://i611.photobucket.com/albums/tt194/paulsulja/Snapbucket/0A967AC2.jpg

Some ideas I'm playing with for the car:
Take the rollbar off my NB and install it on the NA for the summer.
Sell the current shocks and springs on my NB and buy coils for the NA that both cars will probably end up sharing for now while I'm in school.
Buy some decent tires and just run on stock wheels for this year.

For coilovers I was thinking to keep the costs down to go with TEIN Street Basis.

Hopefully I can take this car out to some autox or lapping days sometime this season as that was one of the reasons I wanted it rather than my s14.

I'm trying to convince myself not to sell it in the spring because if I do I could probably end up making an even better profit than I did one my 240sx, but I think I would definitely miss it, and I would never get to see what I could've made the car into if I just held on to it.

Love that garage shot. I thought it was hard enough working on just one Miata at a time. ;)

I love Dasies but those bottlecaps look surprisingly good!

03-07-2012, 09:57 PM
It was actually a lot of fun working on both cars at once. Always nice to have a garage full of Miata's lol.

The bottlecaps really grew on me and looking back I kind of wish I had kept them. I might try to buy them back in the spring since I'm pretty good friends with the guy that bought them.

Car might be coming out of storage soon. Might put the rollbar from my NB in it as well. I'll have to see how much time I have to do the install.

But it's alive and seems to be running well other than a weird idle issue. Drove it about 10km last week just to get it running and filled up with gas. I just have to get the emissions test done and then registered again. Once I start driving it I'll probably want to start doing some more mods to it but we'll see what happens.

Here's a video I totally forgot I had:

Love the video...how the heck did you make her do that? AND, imagine how freaked out other drivers would be if you tried that on the roads.

Let's see you get this NA back in business. It's always good to have a spare Miata.

That's what happens when you give a Miata a little too much to drink:

I was about to pull the trigger on a new set of wheels for the NA but before doing that I needed to borrow the daisies from it for my NB because the tires were so dead on it and I just needed something to roll around on until I get new tires for the Heliums. That meant putting the heliums on the NA. I think it ended up looking a lot better, so instead of ordering new wheels, I'll just get tires for the heliums and run them on the NA.

Before I start driving the car again I want to lower it because the ride height is just embarrassing lol

Somebody has offered me $5k for the mariner. I'm not sure if I want to let it go or not. Thoughts?

If I sold it I would end up buying another na when I finish school and have money to drive both the na and nb at the same time in about a year and a half.

Not sure what the Miata market is like in your area, but that's a very healthy price for a stock one around here. These cars seem to get more valuable in non-rusted form the further north one travels, though. I've noticed a difference even between here (Boston area) and the Philly 'burbs where we used to live. My car would have been ~$1k more around here, I would estimate.

Little update:

Ordered Megan EZ Streets a bit ago and waiting on those to come in. Next is a front lip, either GV style or OEM r package. Undecided still.

May also order wheels for it but I'll have to wait until after I buy textbooks before spending more money.

Car might be getting insured and put back on the road for a couple months before winter comes.

Oh nice update! I can't wait to see the parts on the car!

Same here!

Ordered some more parts today. Smoked bumper lights that were for sale in the classifieds, decided on the r-package lip and ordered that. Will probably order some tinted turn signals as well in the next little bit.

Might also replace the cracked tombstone after I pay for all my books for this semester.

Playing with the idea of a KG Works spoiler again but I think I'd rather continue saving for a duckbill trunk lid after I order the wheels.

Thanks! I'll have to find some time where I can just take my time doing the gauges since I don't want to rush them.. So that may be one of the last things to get installed since this weekend will already be pretty hectic between installing the TEIN coil's on blackchicken's NC, getting the corbeau's into the NB, putting on all those little extras on the NA, and driving down to Ohio again to pick up the coils and maybe install them as well.

@Gene, just a heads up, the fitment isn't the greatest. I will need to do a bit of playing around to get them to fit properly... possibly shave off the back of the light or the bumper where they sit to get them a bit more flush..

Today I installed tow hook, smoked signals, smoked corners, and started to do the lip but found a dent in my front bumper that totally throws off the fitment. I'll need to take a hair dryer to it later and try to get it popped out. Also need to drill the holes for mounting it so I may just wait until the weekend to do that.

I'll post some pictures later since all I have are crappy iphone pics right now.

Got the coils on today... Tires are rubbing hard on the top of the fenderwell so I'll need to work on making some clearance there...

When I finished installing the coils I forgot to tighten to lugs before going for a test drive; luckily I was going really slow when it happened, but my driver's side wheel pretty much came off. But because of my ride height it just kind of stayed in place so I was stuck in the middle of the road until I got a socket to tighten the lugs back on..

Front lip still needs to be installed but ran out of time today.

Would that that be the motors overheating at different times or something else?

psulja
10-28-2012, 10:49 PM
i guess yours are just awesome because mine never does that....

Fixed.

It only does it when I time it right; also I think there is a manual adjustment knob on top of the motors; I adjusted just one side so there is a very slight delay which eventually makes them go out of sync like that. That might be part of it but I may be way off; I did that when I first got the car and didn't know what I was doing.

psulja

These will hopefully be shipped by the end of this week, and once I get them I'll try to get them to fit. Not sure if they will at my current height.

http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg493/ryank03/51254689.jpg

Also starting to plan out what I want to do with the car for next spring. It's either boost the current 1.6, rebuild the 1.8 in my NB and swap that in, or buy another 1.8 and build that. The thought of 13b crossed my mind but that seems like a lot of work lol. Or buy a '91 MR2 turbo and leave the NA slow for another year. If I build the 1.8 and swap it in I would have to wait another year for boost, or I could just have boost a lot quicker by turbo'ing the 1.6 for next spring, but then that'll be more work later if I still end up swapping in a 1.8, will also be more money spent, although I could recoup some of the money from selling all the 1.6 turbo stuff later.

Very excite! Insurance coverage starts at midnight tonight. Driving it tonight to drop it off for the emissions test first thing in the morning and getting the car registered tomorrow afternoon. Will be driving it until the end of the month or until it snows.

Raised it up just a touch in the front to stop rubbing the wheel wells. Drove it a bit, doesn't rub with these wheels and I don't scrape too much; other than my exhaust.

Also finished the license plate mount, might need some adjustments but it'll do for now.

Failed emissions... high HC and CO at idle. Still trying to figure out what it could be so we can make it pass.. Not sure why it is running so rich at idle..

Going to try getting it really hot before running it again, and maybe playing with the timing a little since those are free fixes. Then might get plugs and wires as a start.

:frantic: Just spent the past few hours driving around aimlessly enjoying the car after over a year of storage. It passed emissions! All we did was retard the timing..... A lot! And many back to back passes down the road to get the car really hot. But hey, I'll take it... Timing set back to normal afterwards, got the cars registered properly and enjoyed driving around.

The one on the right is the first try, the one on the left is after making adjustments, huge difference in readings lol

The height still needs to be adjusted a bit, but it will be fine tuned when the new wheels go on. They arrive tomorrow, and hopefully will be on by the weekend. I love the overall height it is at now, still easy to drive around town, scraping here and there but not too bad. But I don't think the new wheels will fit at the current height so things will need to be changed.

Damn Canadians... :P

The car looks awesome with those wheels man. Changes the whole thing! So what do you like more? The NA or NB?

psulja
11-15-2012, 06:53 PM
Haha, honestly, it's still a tough call. I love the way my NA looks way more. I like how much more comfortable the seats are. What I don't like is how slow it is, I can't corner at this ride height, and I've had cops follow me right on my back bumper the past 3 nights in a row on my way home..

Today I drove the NB to work because the NA takes forever to heat up when it is almost below freezing at 6am. When I got in the NB I loved that it was a bit quicker, much louder, and a blast to hoon around in. I missed sliding it around a bit this past week where I wasn't driving it. But I didn't miss the super uncomfortable seat lol.

But yea, I still can't decide which one I like more. If my NB was really clean and looked similar to my NA (but an NB lol) I'd take that. But then if my NA had more power and a bit more practical ride height, I'd take that. Pretty much i like both cars and love being able to choose which car I want to drive on a particular day. Although my bank account hates me for insuring two cars at once lol.

Was going to put the car back in storage today. Decided I wanted to keep driving it some more so that didn't happen. I think I'll keep it out until Thursday since Friday they're calling for some light snow and the car needs to be parked before that happens and they start to go crazy with the salt.

Started looking for 1.8 engines.. Found one that is pretty much a Miata skeleton with complete front and rear suspension and subframes, engine, trans, and diff but the timing belt was removed so I wouldn't be able to see it running beforehand.

But I may be going to look at a 1.8 engine in the next week or so that I found in Ohio that I may swap in. I was going to start ordering turbo parts for the 1.6 but I want the potential for higher power numbers down the road so I figure 1.8 is the way to go.

Anyone want a low-ish mileage 1.6?

Finally starting to plan out the actual "build" part of this car. Quick rundown of the plans; 1.8 swap w/ GT2860RS running MS.

I am going to look at a 1.8 with around 80,000miles on it in Ohio this weekend. If everything checks out I should be picking that up in a couple weeks.

Swap parts list:
'94 1.8l w/ 80,000miles
FM 1.8 swap kit
Timing belt & water pump
OEM flywheel
Flyin' Miata level 1 clutch

Once the engine is in I will be putting on the turbo parts.

Boost:
Garrett GT2860RS
FM manifold & downpipe
eBay IC & piping
TurboXS RFL BOV
RX7 injectors
TurboSmart MBC
Oil & Water lines from ATP Turbo
Wastegate actuator from FM
AEM Wideband

I will be controlling everything with a MS2 built by Reverant. Still trying to decide between the Basic or Enhanced ECU he offers.

Looking to have everything ordered in a couple weeks with plans to do the swap and install the turbo over the month of March. Hopefully will be started tuning it before the end of March to get a basic tune set up for April so I can enjoy the car a bit before going out west for the summer again. Crazy build goal that isn't likely to happen is to have it done and running well enough to drive down to Miatapalooza for April 6th, but that goal might be a bit tough to achieve.

I'm sure I'll have some questions about things in the build that I'll post up about as they come up.

Yea, hopefully. And thanks!

Well since my NB is down right now the push is on to get the swap done so I can start driving this car. Tonight ordered my coolant reroute parts, FM level 1 clutch, and 1.8 swap kit from FM.

Will hopefully have the swap done next week. Will also be deleting PS while the engine is out and possibly AC.

Little update.. Got my clutch and swap kit finally so started doing work but ran into a few snags. First my flywheel wasn't ready for yesterday so that was on hold til today, but then when we went to install the oil pan again we noticed you can't install the pan without undoing the oil pickup tube meaning I need to go get a gasket for that. So tomorrow I'll go get a gasket for that (or make my own out of gasket paper), put the pan on, flywheel, clutch, trans, and drop it all in (hopefully!).

Also installed my rollbar with the help of some friends on Tuesday.

A couple nights ago I had some friends over and we wanted to get the car running. Drilled out the IM for the FM TB spacer, extended the rest of the wires i needed, installed everything that was left, went to start it, nothing! Seemed like either the timing was out or it was getting fuel. Sprayed brake kleen in the intake manifold and it fired up for a bit but died shortly after. Sprayed even more BrakeKleen in, went full throttle and tried to start it again, the brake kleen exploded, shooting the intake pipe across the garage and starting a fire in the engine bay and under the car. Luckily got the fire out before it did any real damage. Then after that checked the firing order and due to a miscommunication we had it backwards. Fixed that and it fired right up. Lots of ticking from the head but that was just because the engine sat dry for so long. Let it idle for a while and that went away.

Next issue came when we looked under the car and saw a steady stream of coolant coming down from the back of the engine from my reroute. Unsure what it was and tired from a long day of work we called it a night.

Today I finally got around to working on the car again. Filled the transmission fluid and was going to go for a drive around the block and just get the car out of the garage since I'm leaving for Iqaluit, Nunavut on Thursday. Well driving it around the block made me want to completely finish the car before I leave so that's what I did tonight.

Driving around the neighbourhood without a front end:
http://i611.photobucket.com/albums/tt194/paulsulja/Snapbucket/75B44D9F_zpsc9f14a32.jpg

Pulled the car into the garage again, fixed my coolant leak which was the fan thermoswitch, put the exterior all back together, put the interior back together after the rollbar install, and a bunch of other little things that needed to be taken care of.

Pic of the car all done waiting to be hooned in tomorrow when insurance goes back on it:
http://i611.photobucket.com/albums/tt194/paulsulja/Snapbucket/DEB8CB9F_zps1d1dfb0f.jpg

Finished engine bay with the 1.8 swap completed:
http://i611.photobucket.com/albums/tt194/paulsulja/Snapbucket/4EFC5216_zps26c04079.jpg

I'll see how things go tomorrow, I'm planning to get all of my clutch break-in miles done tomorrow. So far I absolutely love how the FM1 clutch grabs, so much better than a completely blown stock one. When I pulled my trans off there was a pile of clutch material in the bellhousing.

Well now that the swap is done I can start getting ready for the next part of the build. A problem I'm having is deciding if I want to keep building this car or start saving for the next car (Lotus Exige). I'd like to build this car at least to the point I have always wanted to with a turbo and over 220whp. Ideally I would push over 250whp but that's when a lot of things start to go boom. If I decide to keep the car a lot of parts will start to come in over the summer while I'm working up north to be installed over the fall and winter when I get back.

As of right now I have an FMII kit sitting at home with a Garrett GT2860RS that needs to be installed. All I'm missing is my MSII, oil return line, and boost gauge. That'll be installed for sure this fall. Then it's time to start thinking about what I want to do with the car. Either way it'll be sticking around but I'll either dump more money into it or put a nice downpayment down for an Exige and keep the Miata as it is with the turbo kit installed.

The car also badly needs brakes so I'll be looking around to see what kind of options I have. Considering installing the calipers I have left over from my NB with some decent pads and rotors.

Would also like to get a more functional wheel and tire setup but that's always a really tough decision so I'll see where I go with that. I love how the car looks now but it isn't all that much fun driving around when you're always in fear of killing your fenders while cornering.

I was also getting to the point where I needed a place to keep the car as well as somewhere to work on it that is close to home and warm in the winter. In the past I stored the car 40 minutes from home in my brother's garage and when I needed to do work on it I'd bring it home and take over my parent's garage. Didn't really like that so it was time to look for something new. I figured that the closest I can get to home is my backyard so we started planning out the new garage.

We currently had a shed back there but it was never intended to be a garage so it was obviously missing the door, insulation, electrical, drywall, as well as work benches.

Pulled the siding off and cut the hole out for the new door and moved the man door to the side rather than the front:

http://i611.photobucket.com/albums/tt194/paulsulja/Garage/garagedrywall2_zps76026e95.jpg

Paint should happen in the next week and a door will be going on in two weeks. After that the car will be moved in where it will sit until I get back from up north.

Dimensions of the garage are 16x20 with 10' ceilings. And I'll be going with a 9x7 door. The plan is to have the left side work benches and part storage and the right side completely empty for lots of room to work on the car.

So I'm considering getting some new wheels with a bit higher offset and some sticky rubber to put down the power I plan on making. Any suggestions?

So far I've been considering 6ul's, Konig Flatout or Wideopens. I love my current wheels but I need a more functional setup since I really want to be able to have fun with the added power.

Any thoughts of other options out there? Must be at least 8" wide.

----

Since my plans always seem to be changing with this car and how i want to go about the build, right now it looks like FM2 kit with the gt2560 will be going on once i get home in about a week. I'll get the car tuned (dyno time planned already), and I'll be going to a somewhat local drag strip to see how it does with the small turbo. May try to squeeze in a lapping day as well before the car goes into storage.

Over winter I'll be installing the rest of my drivetrain and the bigger turbo. May start putting parts together to build the motor as well so i can start making real power.

Ran into a couple issues today with my rad hoses. First the upper hose with the reroute and the FM intercooler pipe didn't want to fit together so I did the revlimiter fix. Then I never got a lower rad hose with my kit for some unknown reason. I guess that's what I get for buying used. Bought a random rad hose that looks like it might work after some cutting but we'll see.

Also, picked up my MS today! Hopefully get that hooked up and start looking over the tune that was loaded on by Dimitris tonight as well as finish bolting up a few other things. Will likely post an actual update when I finish in the garage for the night.

Got a bit further on the car today. Hooked up the driveshaft and all the other shit under the car as well as all the connectors other than the TPS, IAC, and IAT. Since the motor is from a '94 and I'm retarded I didn't get the connectors from the 1.8 TB for the VTPS and IAC so I'll need to find those somewhere and wire them in. Also swapped injectors and installed the IC and all the piping.

Also, since I did a coolant reroute so the coolant goes through the back of the engine now and each cylinder gets even cooling I have been using a rad hose from an Escalade for my upper rad hose but that gets in the way of my IC pipe that comes up to the TB so I had to rig something up to get it to fit. Got a rad hose from some Oldsmobile as suggested by Revlimiter and cut it up a bit to make it fit and then did some more cutting later to make it fit even better.

Then the old lower rad hose used to run right where the turbo inlet is now so that wouldnt work. Found a random hose at partsource that looked like it might work, cut it up a bit and installed it.

Still need to pick up clamps for all my rad hoses.

Before:
http://i611.photobucket.com/albums/tt194/paulsulja/The%20Smurf/IMG_2268_zps23e269ff.jpg

New hoses, the one I used for my lower rad hose was $11 rather than the $50 FlyinMiata wanted for a lower rad hose.
http://i611.photobucket.com/albums/tt194/paulsulja/The%20Smurf/IMG_2270_zps237b90b6.jpg

Guess I haven't updated this thread in a bit. Soldered connectors on and hooked up the TPS. Was getting messed up signals from the TPS fluctuating 10-20%. Checked the voltage and on a full sweep I was only getting a range of 4.3-4.8V rather than what it should have been with 0.2-4.8V. Bought a new TPS, plugged it in, had a bit of a better range and a more steady signal but it is still fluctuating between 1-3%. Could possibly be a grounding issue; not sure though.

Installed my DP as well, wired up the wideband and boost gauge, just need to T the boost gauge into the vacuum line going to the MS.

Fixed my coolant leak that has been there since doing the 1.8 swap on my copper inlet pipe for the heater core by taking a 10mm socket followed by an 11mm and hammering them into the pipe to round it out after it got crushed removing the old hoses.

Got the car idling well and finally took it out for a drive to fill up on gas. It seems to drive well other than the bucking from the TPS sending fluctuating signals. Should get some solid tuning time in on Friday and then sometime after that it'll be time to build the exhaust since I'm currently just running an open downpipe.

No pics since last time, will hopefully snap some tomorrow.

Haven't posted in here because I've been too busy driving the car :frantic:

Drove it over to my friend's place where we would start doing a good look over of everything and hopefully start some tuning. On the way there the car died. Sure enough, I must have forgotten to fully tighten the nut for the ground on the alternator and it back off leading to a weak alternator and a dead car at the side of the road 5 blocks from my friend's place. Jump started, drove over, jacked the car up to check the alternator when I found that. Fixed it as well as a leak at the TB, set the timing, switched over to MAPdot based accel enrichments and rolled the car out of the garage.

We were both really impressed by the base tune Dimitris loaded on the MS before sending it to me. Everything looked really good, other than needing to add more fuel up top, which we figured out why we needed to do that tonight. One of the orings on my 550cc's got pinched during installation and was pouring fuel out. Progressively got worse to the point where today the car smelled horribly like pure gasoline lol. And I got 50miles out of half a tank of gas. Stole an o-ring from my oem injectors and it was all good.

Current kills include my friends built Jetta which he thought would walk me, an e39 m5, and came very close to beating a modded audi b5 s4 which ran low 13's in the quarter mile. Going to rematch now that I've fixed my boost leak from the BOV.

Boost is soo good.

Also bought a manual boost controller. Will be raising the boost to about 13psi or 14psi this weekend.

Hopefully I can sell my spare turbo and the wheels that are on it right now to get some new wheels to make it out to a lapping day before the end of the season. Looking at getting these:

Adjusted boost a bit to 13psi, just below what I was running the night we were tuning for more boost.

PB, last run, didn't want to do anymore runs after it because I beat the guy I was trying to beat and didn't expect to even hit the 12's today. Plus nothing broke and I still needed to drive the car back home 200km.

So not much to update in here as the season winds down. Currently planning out exactly where I'm going with the car and it may be a long road in front of me.

Took the car out to Woodward, you Michigan people will know what I'm talking about, and had some fun. It was kind of cold since and not too many people were out since its the end of the season. Got to run an S2k, modded del sol, 2013 subaru wrx, e36 m3, r32 GTR, and possibly some other cars that I don't really remember lol. It was supposed to be a night of racing Cobalt's but they all backed out when they heard i ran 12's. Anyways, that list of cars there is added to the kill list of this car  All of that was done on around 13.5psi. Not posting any of those videos here though.

The car might have one more night of fun left in it for the season before I park it in my garage and start pulling parts off it again.

Also, got my tombstone radio surround with a radio blanking plate, and ordered some little things like window guides and the antenna delete from ROADSTERTECH lol. Going to start ordering some more parts in the next month or so to keep me busy over winter.

So I'm sure some of you saw my "Value Inquiry" thread on pretty much my entire current setup. Looking for some opinions here.

The end goal for this car was a built motor, big turbo, etc, etc, to go in over next winter, aiming for 400whp. Why? Because I want to see just how far I can push a Miata. Now Danny George's setup is back up for sale and could get me to to that end goal of 400whp a lot sooner. As in, this season. But I have a perfectly running setup right now that'll do 12's all year and be a lot of fun from the very first day of spring until the fall (unless I blow things up). Going with the new setup means having down time and going through the headache of re-tuning everything and dealing with any little kinks. This could mean downtime as far as up until June.

I also need to to remove everything from my car and sell it to help fund the new build, and then the rest would be paid for by my tax return.

Also, I need to keep in mind that I still need to deal with my current brake setup and wheel/tires which could be up to another $2000.

Any opinions? Keep the current setup and enjoy 230-250whp all year and do the build later for more money (focusing on brakes and suspension this year), or part out the current setup and bite the bullet on all the power in the world with significant downtime this season?

I<3flippyheadlights

Thanks for chiming in Gavin. I want the car to be fast, not just quick. Right now it is only quick. At the same time, I don't want to rush things and cut corners like suspension, brakes, tires, safety, etc.

I was almost dead set on purchasing the new setup but I've been really thinking hard about it, and I'm not sure the rest of the car is ready for that step. But all that power is really tempting. Still going to sleep on it a bit.

Any other opinions? Seems pretty dead in here lol.

There is a good chance I would have a lot of downtime this summer with a few headaches while trying to sort out the tune on the new motor/turbo. Also, there would be fab work involved in the drivetrain swap which would slow me down a bit.

Realistically, if I didn't do the swap, I could have the car back on the road middle of April since that's when the roads start to clear up from all the salt. If I did the build it'd be June/July and I would miss any track days in the spring time.

Beware of monster motor set ups, they require monster everything else. Much of which you may not think you will need, but you will probably need to make everything work right.

Personally, I think you can find a lot more speed out of your current set up. There is a ton of speed found in the chassis itself, and once you find it, you will have not only a faster car, but a more reliable car than one with a monster motor set up.

Once you have honed your tuning skills in both motor and chassis, will you get the most out of a future monster of your dreams.

psulja
02-20-2014, 09:40 PM
Well the thing about this setup is it is a complete pull-out from a running car with all the supporting mods that went into that car as far as drivetrain goes.

But I do agree with you on the point of a lot more being able to come out of this setup. I think if I leave it as is, and spend time making adjustments here and there, and adding some power and a sticky tire I could get closer to my goals with this setup. And if not, at least learn a lot along the way. Right now I feel my limiting factor is the stock internals of my motor, but a stock motor, setup right, could still put down some good times in the 1/4.

I always try to say my car is more for street fun and the occasional lapping days, but realistically it is for street fun and drag racing most of the time (although I want to get into lapping this season). I'm at a 12.83 right now, if I could get deep 12's out of this setup that'd be awesome. Ideally I'd like to get into the 11's but that is a long way away, or so it seems to me.

I was thinking on this more yesterday. I got rid of my supercharger because 130/140 HP wasn't enough. I bought a turbo for a goal of 200HP knowing there would be down time. In the end, I know the downtime will be worth it. It is the same way with you. You want to be faster, and if that is really what you want, then do it, man. You only live once. If you can do it responsibly, then you should just do it.

psulja
02-22-2014, 12:39 AM
Thanks for all the input guys!

11's is not as far as you might think.

It feels like a lot. The way I feel right now is that I would need a built motor with over 250whp to break into the 11's. Or do you think I can find a second in the quarter mile elsewhere? I'll be getting tires to cut down my 60' since I was doing a 2.00 for my fastest passes.

The very first thing I'm buying with my tax return is either a drag radial or slicks and skinnies, followed by a new set of wheels and tires for the street. I will also be getting swaybars and replacing all my bushings. I know I need to find a way to stop my diff from moving around to eliminate wheel hop, but that may have to wait until the drivetrain swap.

I also plan on running meth in the spring, just to get familiar with tuning with it for later down the road.

I'll either be getting pads and rotors or a BBK as well, but have not decided on that yet.

What are some other things you would suggest doing to help get the drivetrain and chassis to a point where I'm cutting down my times significantly?

Also, a dyno tune should finally be happening.

Using the online e/t calculator looks like I would need roughly 250whp for a car that weighs 2187lbs just to crack an 11.99. Realistically, my car weighs more than that so I'm going to need more power. I meant to get my car weighed this fall, just never got around to it; that'll definitely be happening in the spring.

How long do you think a torsen will hold up to 400whp and slicks though? Also transmission wise. I may have missed it but i dont know how long the stock trans and diff will take that. Road course is one thing but hard launching and shifting on a 1/4 mile strip is another ball game. Id go the upgrade the other parts of the car first route personally. Sweet car either way!

The Torsen is very strong the bearing caps that hold the Torsen are very weak. They are made of a weak metal that will disintegrate with very little wheel hop destroying your expensive diff. I learned my lesson well. that's why I made these: http://mazdaroadster.net/classifieds.php?p[mshow]=listing&p[id]=differential-billet-bearing-caps-for-torsen-kaaz-os-giken-26736

The car will be getting a complete TII drive train when it comes time to go for big power. Already have the transmission, just looking for a diff now. But not in a rush for that really. I'll likely just do my supporting mods to get the entire car up to par so it can handle and slow down when it's making significant power.

If I were you, I would run a 22 or 23 inch tall slick on a 7" or 8" wheel. You will notice that the wheel hop will be pretty much gone. That is enough tire to easily get you in the 1.6 60' range. For every tenth you pick up in 60, you gain 1.5 - 1.75 tenths in total ET. If you are going to have a dedicated set for the drag strip, then I would definitely get a pair of front skinnies as well. It will shave off some time.

Personally, I would look for an open diff and have it welded. Torsens are more for road coarse duties, and are known to fail at the drag strip. I have gone 1.7's on my diff many times, and have not had any problems. It is a very inexpensive way to solve a problem and it works. Stick with the Miata diff for a while, the RX-7 stuff is just not necessary at this point.

Next, you need to work on your tune. You can start at the dyno to get you in the ballpark, but make your final adjustments at the track. Timing is usually where most lost tenths are found. Drag strip tuning can be a little hotter than what you would normally run for track day events. Just remember to switch tunes when you leave the drag strip.

The bottom line is you need to spend as much time at the track as possible to get a feel for how your car works. It takes a lot more practice than many people realize to get the car to work properly at the track. You will also get a better feel on how to tune the car. You should never go to the drag strip and not make some adjustments to your tune. It is not just driving practice, but tuning practice as well. That is one of the reasons I think it is a little premature to make big set up changes, when you really do not know what your car is currently capable of or have the experience necessary to make the car work.

I think you can get in the 11's with what you have. It will not happen overnight, but it has been done with other similar set ups as yours. Take your time, practice, and make small step upgrades as you go. When you stop going faster, is it then time for the big upgrades.

What do you think of these for tires?

Rear tires:
http://www.summitracing.com/int/parts/mnh-mhr005/overview/
Rear wheels:
http://www.summitracing.com/int/parts/crw-11380410500/overview/

For the front wheels I think I'll use a couple of donuts/spares for wheels but am having a lot of trouble finding skinnies in 14".

I hadn't thought of swapping out for a welded diff, but that would be smart so I'm not concerned about blowing up my torsen at the track because that'd be pretty upsetting.

I plan to spend a decent amount of time at the track, but not sure how much will actually happen. There are at least 4 track days our local club has that I'll likely definitely attend.

miata2fast
02-24-2014, 11:47 AM
The tire is a good choice if you do not mind running 13 inch wheels on the back. I personally would stick with a 15 inch wheel so you can run larger brakes for road coarse duties if you so choose to. Summit probably does not list it, but M&H has that exact height available in a 15 inch version. I run Mickey Thompsons that are 22" tall on a 15" wheel.

Same goes for the fronts, there is a 22" tall skinny available in 15". That is what I recommend.

As for the wheels, no way in hell am I going to chase after the fastest times using steel wheels. Don't go through all the trouble with skinnies only to throw half your gains by using heavy wheels. Contact Bogart Racing to get a light weight wheel. They have affordable options.

Once you get the wheels, tires, and rear end all sorted out, you are going to love how much faster the car goes.

psulja
02-24-2014, 12:42 PM
I will get in touch with Bogart to see how much it would be to get a set of wheels made. The specs I'm giving them are 15x8 for the rear and 15x4 for the front. Obviously 4x100. And am I correct in giving them a 5.00" backspacing?

miata2fast
02-24-2014, 03:01 PM
They built a set for me, and may have a record of it. It's been so long I can't quite remember. They will take you through the steps to get the wheel back spacing right. I would also look up what other manufactures are doing that regularly fit wheels on Miatas. For mine, I took careful measurements so I could fit the tallest tire I could for when the time comes for me to do so.

My wheels are 7" wide on the back. Not so sure you need an 8" wheel. Bigger is not always better. You want the lightest combo you can get that will get the job done. An 8" wheel with a 26" tire is enough to put you in the 8's. Do you plan to go that fast? If not, step it down. In the lower ET bracket, the smaller wheel and tire will go faster.

psulja
02-24-2014, 03:18 PM
Okay, I'll wait and see what kind of quote I get from them. Once I get a response to my initially inquiry I'll see about dropping down to a 15x7 for the rear.

Looks like spending on the car is going to have to take a bit of a cut from what I was planning this spring. Tuition wrecked me way harder than I was expecting so now I'll be focusing on the essentials for getting the car driving on the road, and fun enough for a lapping day. Looks like my list is down to

- Front sways & endlinks
- Pads, rotors, and SS lines
- SS clutch line
- 15x9's w/ 225/45's for the street
- 3" exhaust
- Battery
- EBC solenoid
- door bars
- frame rails

Should be ordering parts within the next three weeks and the car should be ready to come back on the road once spring comes. Hopefully that'll be mid-April, depending on the weather.

Slicks, skinnies, racing seats, and all those fun things will happen later in the season.

Gonna change the brakes tomorrow.

Bought an exhaust. Kind of.

Bought another TPS, 3rd times the charm maybe.

If I can get the IC piping figured out the car might be back on the road in a couple weeks and that'll make me motivated to play with other things like EBC.

Was pretty much ready to rage quit on this car after tonight. I'll see how things go tomorrow; if no better than tonight it may just stay on jackstands for a while.

Wrapped things up on the car yesterday around 8:00pm. Made a new IC pipe that would work better with the reroute rather than modifying the aluminum rad. Installed my clutch slave and SS line, bled that. Brake pads and rotors at all 4 corners, and a bunch of other stuff.

Pulled it out of the garage after jump starting it. Drove it around but then went to burn in TunerStudio at which point the car died. Battery was the deadest. Bought a new battery.

It was all going fine until today at 4pm when I noticed I had very little brake pressure and the low brake fluid light came on. Headed home to see what was wrong with it and get more fluid until what I was almost certain was my 5 speed breaking.

To top it off my FM downpipe broke just after the flex portion.

It sounded like marbles coming from the trans in 2nd and 3rd, and a little bit in 1st but I was pretty close to home where I wasn't pushing the car at all. And I realized later that I still had perfectly good driveability in those gears, other than the sound of marbles. Thought I'd drop the trans and have a look except I'm stuck on the two top bolts and decided to walk away from the car for the night before I ruined my back anymore.

If I don't have any luck tomorrow I'll just do the tried and true way of pulling the entire motor/trans together.

I feel like its not my transmission that is blown up but rather maybe a flywheel bolt backed out. I just hope my clutch isn't destroyed.

I'd post pics but I've been too busy and frustrated to even bother taking pictures.

Well after buying some more tools to get the job down I finally got the transmission out. Pulling a transmission out of a miata on jackstands solo with a hurt back and a hernia is something I never want to do again. Not only is my transmission broken, my clutch is toast as well after a burnout went badly. What we suspect happened is the transmission input shaft broke between the two burnouts, so when I went to do the second it was caught on the missing tooth, when I popped the clutch for the second burnout, rather than the power making it to the wheels, the trans wouldn't spin and the clutch did a burnout of its own. It all seemed okay until the following day when the transmission completely failed.

Also pictured is my broken downpipe.

That being said, since my transmission is toast and my clutch with about 4000km on it got destroyed because of it I'm not going to get a new clutch or another Miata 5 speed. The car is staying in the garage for another few months as I try to get some money together and collect parts to do my TII drivetrain swap. I was hoping to do that next winter but since this happened not even 24hrs after getting the car out this season I may as well take the necessary steps to eliminate all weak points. No point dumping $500 into a setup that is just going to explode again when I can spend a bit over $1200-1400 and have a bulletproof drivetrain with the only thing left to upgrade being the engine. Unfortunately, I just paid off all my school loans so there isn't much money left for car parts so it may be a while before anything happens.

Went to Cars & Coffee with a friend in his e36 m3 on Saturday and couldn't take the entire not having the car out with all this nice weather. Also ran into another friend at C&C who had a 5 speed and a BNIB clutch disk, bought the transmission and got the clutch for free.

Got home at 10pm, jacked the car up, installed the new clutch, transmission, and then put my torsen back in which I just removed to sell as a means of funding the TII swap. Started at 10pm, and finished up around 4am, but my car is back on the road!

Although it may be time to start taking it a bit easier on the car for a bit until I have more TII parts ready to go in. Almost turned the boost down today but decided against it; I'll see if that's something I have to pay for in the next couple weeks lol

Thanks guys, maybe we should start a pool taking bets on how long this thing will be running before I blow something else up.

It's actually a frankenstein clutch setup just so I can have the car running. I don't expect it to last but if it does I'll be happy. It is a 1.8 flywheel w/ a 1.6 spec stage 2+ clutch disk, and an FM level 1 pressure plate (1.8). Still doing break-in miles to try to help it last a few weeks longer, but pulls have still happened because its just way too hard not to lol

Well it finally happened. After 6 years of driving I got pulled over for the first time, which led to me being handcuffed and put in the back of a cruiser for the first time. There's actually a video of me in cuffs behind the cruiser with the Miata at the side of the road with driver's door still opened from being pulled from the car from an acquaintance that was driving by at the time.

But all good now, got the fines reduced to 99km/h in a 50km/h zone, expired tags, and failure to surrender current proof of insurance. I'm still going to meet with the prosecutor to get that knocked down a bit more. In Ontario, anything 50km/h+ over the speed limit is usually a roadside license suspension, your car getting impounded, and a $2000 fine under our "Stunt Driving" law. The cop originally was going to charge with with Dangerous Driving which is a criminal offence. But with my clean record and me co-operating really well he admitted that'd be unfair to me due to the situation. He also encouraged me to go meet with the prosecutor to try to get the fines reduced some more. He actually turned out to be a pretty cool cop after he calmed down from the original arrest when he actually locked his keys in his cruiser while he was busy shouting at me.

I went to pass a civic that was going 10km/h under the speed limit, once I got beside him he stepped on it so I downshifted and finished my pass. Unfortunately I didn't see the cruiser parked deep in a driveway behind me, but luckily since he was behind me he couldn't radar me after I was in front of the civic so he got me at 128km/h rather than what I was actually doing.

So yes, you gotta pay to play and no matter how good you are at spotting cops and getting away from tickets it'll eventually catch up to you. I wasn't going to post about the incident up in here but I don't want someone to read this thread, see all the hooning that goes on and think you can get away with it. There is a cost, and its a pretty big one. I've had the car out for 3 weekends this season, between broken parts and fines its cost me a minimum of $500 each weekend of driving it.

I always said before it even happened, I had never even been pulled over with how I drive but that it was going to happen this year and that it'll be a big one. I actually said I'll be going well over 50km/h the limit when it happens and the cop will be hiding at the side of the street where I can't see him and won't actually know he's after me, meaning I'd have no chance to run. All of those things happened.

Well that day in court went way better than I ever possibly imagined it to. Met with the prosecutor and he asked what I wanted to happen with my tickets. I said I'd like to see 2 of them dropped and I'll pay the more expensive speeding fine because 3 tickets makes you a high risk driver for insurance companies but I'd rather pay the province than my insurance company. He said, well you don't want points on your record right, I agreed and he made me his offer; Drop the speeding and license plate sticker charges completely and leave me with only the expired insurance slip ticket with a higher fine. The higher fine was still way less than the original fine of all 3 tickets and I now have no points affecting my license and I don't think my insurance company rates for the expired slip ticket which means I shouldn't have an increase in premiums.

I still can't believe I went from being caught on radar at 85km/h over the limit to not having a speeding ticket at all. Especially with all my expired paperwork.

Same thing happened to me. I was driving the cop stopped me for speeding in a 25mph zone. When he ran my license it was expired due to my insurance notifying the state I was driving without insurance. The fact is I had turned in my tag and never notified the insurance agency. The cop issued 4 tickets and attempted to arrest me for driving with a suspended license. He also wanted to impound my dad's car. Luckily my ex-girlfriend lived like two blocks away from the incident. I called her and she drove the car home. The day of the court hearing I arrived late to the hearing, the guy before me was sentenced to a 6 month probation and like a $1000 dollars fine. I was next, expecting the worst so when the judge asked about my case, I proved I had surrendered the tag before the insurance notified the State. The prosecutor moved to enforce the remaining tickets but the judge denied the motion and sent me home dismissing all the tickets. It was one of the luckiest day in my life. I left that court shouting like a madman....

Well after a weekend of drinking my sorrows away and thinking about what i want to do with the car I still haven't come to a final decision lol. I've been planning out a build for this car for the past few months that I wanted to do over this winter but I might leave the car off the road for the next while now and just start that build now, at a much slower pace.

Unless I find a cheap, good condition, ready to drop in 1.8. Otherwise I want to just take the time to build the entire drivetrain to as close to bulletproof as possible. I'm sick of transmissions, diffs, motors blowing up every few weeks and I don't want to turn down the boost.

Anyways, here are some pics. I'll get better carnage pics when the motor is on its way out.

This happened while taking a coworker for a ride because he was ripping on Miatas and didn't believe a gay little 4-banger could be as quick as I said it was. His mind was blown. Then shortly after, so was my motor lol

Where it happened, you can see where it goes from happiness to sadness very quickly:

that's a bummer man. Hope it comes back better than ever. Do you have plans to make more power or just build up the rest of the drivetrain to handle the power. I have to agree that people are surprised on how fast these cars are even with my supercharger and then i tell them i have only 140-150 horsepower(really need to dyno my car) so all my friends have never even been in a really fast miata

Bought a flat-top intake manifold which will be getting ported and polished when everything goes to the machine shop.

Car will be leaving my place in about 3 weeks to get work started on the TII Rx7 drivetrain swap. Hopefully by then I will have bought my new turbo and fab work will be started on a custom, equal runner length, true twin scroll manifold as well as my downpipe. Before the car comes back home after the fab work I`ll hopefully have my IC and new throttle body so work can get started on the IC piping.

So a slight change in plans for the build. Rather than building my motor now while I`m getting things fabbed for the drivetrain swap at Glease Manufacturing and then bringing the car back again for hotside side fab things in the winter I`ve decided to get all the fabwork done at the same time to save myself a tow.

This means in 3 weeks the car is making the trip to Glease Manufacturing so we can start work on the complete TII drivetrain swap and the building of my tubular manifold, downpipe, and possibly IC piping.

Today I pulled apart the rest of the car so its ready for its trip.

Had a heater core leak when I first did the engine swap so that padding under the carpet on the driver`s side was stuck to the floor and has started to stink. Will clean that up later when I`m bored.

Pushed it out of the detached garage to power wash everything and have to keep it in the attached garage for now since the other one is full of car parts.

I`m hoping to be able to buy the new turbo from Fab9 in the next couple weeks if I can finally move this FM2 kit I have sitting here.

Been a bit since stuff has happened. Mostly been buying parts and planning things out. Anyways, the car is now at GleaseManufacturing where mounts for the drivetrain swap are being done and the manifold and downpipe will be built. I've already bought the turbo and a few other goodies but when I actually find time to go to Fab9 to pick them up I'll post pics.

As of last night my car has a transmission again. Well sort of. The mounts are built and the Tii transmission bolts into my car with the mockup motor. Some trimming needs to be done on the shifter hole on the car and the slave cylinder needs to be modified and bolted up; but the big part is done.

Next up is mounting the Tii diff which has been impossible to buy. I've tried to buy 3 or 4 different ones and things always fall through. Paid for another one this week and that should be on its way to me soon. Once it gets here it'll be getting installed.

Looking good. I've got a question for you on the mounts. Are they only welded on three sides? I'd be concerned that it isn't enough. Have you thought about doing plug welds on the fourth side for added strength?

psulja
10-11-2014, 02:13 PM
Stiff motor mounts should take care of any twist from the engine that would cause added stress to the trans mounts. Plug welds aren't all that useful on sheet metal. Considered doing a plate on top for added strength but after looking at it this should be strong enough.

My 6speed is about to explode anytime now, I never considered the TII tranny but looking at the pics if should be piece of cake with my Boss Frog transmission mount.

The pictures are unclear but what type of bellhousing or mount are using to match the block?? Also the shifter location can you put more pictures please??

Thank you man

It's an adaptor plate I got off MT.

Will take more pics next time I see the car but it's 40 minutes away and I only make it out there when there's stuff that needs to get done.

You also need a custom clutch disk, driveshaft, etc

So a little bit of an update.

Finally found a Tii diff, unfortunately it is an s5 diff rather than an s4 so it is not the clutch type LSD. Oh well, I wanted to get the mounts fabbed up and didn't want to wait around anymore. I'll still try to find an s4 diff and then this diff will become a spare.

Diff is now mounted in the car, next is installing the hubs I got today from MonsterMiata since MiataRoadster stopped making them. I also need to take measurements and have a driveshaft built.

Been kind of quiet around here. Been waiting on progress on the manifold and DP before ordering too many more things but then I got impatient.

Ordered all the engine things:

- Wiseco 83.5mm 8.5:1 Pistons
- Manley Forged H-beam Rods
- ARP head studs
- ARP main studs
- ATI Harmonic Balancer
- ACL RACE bearings
- Cometic MLS Headgasket
- Boundary Engineering Street Oil Pump 2 shims
- Supertech Intake Valves
- Supertech Exhaust Valves
- Supertech Dual Valve Spring Kit 63lbs
- Supertech Valve Seal Set
- Gaskets - Oil Pan, Crankshaft + Front Seal, Rear Main
- Gates Complete Water Pump + Racing Timing Component Kit

Finally made it out to do some work on the car last weekend.

Made the cuts to fit the Stage 2 Fab9Tuning intercooler and mocked that up. The pulled the rear hubs, just waiting on my wheel bearings to come in before putting the new hubs back in.

Couple more small updates, just finishing up some loose ends while waiting for progress on my manifold and motor. Just waiting on the EFR vband flange to show up for the manifold build to start and last I heard the machine work was completed on the block earlier this week, hoping for that to be done in a few weeks so assembly on the rest of the car can start.

Cuts made in the transmission tunnel for the TII shifter to fit because of the longer transmission.

http://i611.photobucket.com/albums/tt194/paulsulja/Miata%202014/10917746_10152696990673541_881684142_n_zpsbb87f151 .jpg

Someone brought up that the mounts on just the bottom side of the car for the transmission might not be strong enough, so with the entire theme of this build and overdoing everything we went back and added bolt on plates from the top side to give it a bit more strength. The original mounts probably would have been fine but while we're in there may as well do this as well. Doesn't hurt.

http://i611.photobucket.com/albums/tt194/paulsulja/Miata%202014/10928729_10152696990653541_1475241238_n_zps9b916f9 7.jpg

Then there was an issue with the starter. The way it mounted to the adapter plate meant that the trans would need to be removed to change the starter in case it ever failed. Rather than dealing with that a helicoil was added to the adapter plate to allow for easy r&r of the starter.

http://i611.photobucket.com/albums/tt194/paulsulja/Miata%202014/10928043_10152696990633541_1929488678_n_zpsfb40358 1.jpg

Then the power steering delete on the rack was cleaned up. I did it really ghetto last time since it was a last minute thing when I was putting the car together and I just had the lines crimped and twisted. Not like anyone will ever see this but its a bit cleaner

http://i611.photobucket.com/albums/tt194/paulsulja/Miata%202014/10893682_10152696990643541_709671537_n_zps12b382c4 .jpg

New hubs were installed with the axles. Pretty tight squeeze with the bigger axles so the exhaust is definitely going to have to be modified.

Your manifold looks awesome but wouldn't it make more sense to build a methanol/e-85 set up capable of delivering the fuel demands for your ultimate horsepower build? There are fuel pumps out there and injectors capable to make this happen without the need of additional band aids.

It's the flange bolted to a jig meant for building the manifold on. The tubes going to it are for the gasses so it is back purged during building. The proper way to build a manifold

So there is progress on the manifold! I'm really excited about this as its been a few months in the making. What started as a one-off manifold built by Glease Manufacturing is turning into something much more than that. After talking with Bryan of Fab9Tuning.com a few times about the lack of manifold options for EFRs out there he mentioned how Fab9 was looking to offer something to the market so I introduced him to John of Glease Manufacturing and that's what brings us to the next few updates that will be posted in here.

Can't thank Bryan from Fab9tuning enough for all the things he has done so far in helping this build come together. If you guys need anything for your Miatas send an email to Bryan and I'm sure he'll be able to hook you up. There's a reason Mr. MattMan, myself, and many others keep going back to Fab9.

Here are a few pics for now.

quick question

Is this a standard TiAL inlet flange or a Tial exclusive design for EFR turbos? The reason I ask is because most my research so far is on Garrett turbos, and Tial. I admit I don't much about Borg Warner turbos.

psulja
01-27-2015, 06:47 PM
It's a different flange for the efr. If you don't know about Borg Warners efr line of turbos you need to research it before you buy a Garrett

Hyper
01-27-2015, 07:41 PM
I am already set on Garrett. I know EFR turbos spool better due to their gamma titanium made wheel design. For the new turbo kit I am presently building I want to use Tial's new .52 turbine housing which is only compatible with Garrett turbos. What's the A/R on your turbine housing?

And you don't need to go nuts and run an EFR 7163 like me to run it since the 3 EFR sizes that are commonly used on the Miata (6258, 6758, 7163) are built on the same frame. So this isn't just for high horsepower builds. Get a 6258, make really good power with awesome spool all while having a super sexy engine bay.

So I ordered a good chunk of parts last weekend that should be showing up soon as I get ready to put the car together.

- 2 Mishimoto baffled catch cans
- Innovate EGT
- ID2000cc injectors
- Walbro 430lph fuel pump
- Fuelab 515 FPR
- Snow Performance Meth injection kit
- Setrab oil cooler

I know the injectors are big, but I don't want to run into the problem of possibly overworking ID1300's so I figured I'd give myself some headroom. And from what I'm read, the ID2000's linearity is great and shouldn't be too much of a pain for tuning. Plus they're right around the same price for either one. Although there's always the possibility that I've made a terrible mistake.

Car should be moving to a friend's garage closer to home this weekend at which point clean up and prep of the car will start and hopefully the engine will be ready shortly after that.
