I've been watching the Low Mileage Miatas on ebay for a few years now, they still seem to be holding a strong value IMHO.

Look at this Red NA with Black interior on ebay, looks great. Sold for $9,500 Its funny that you can buy NB and NCs cheaper than a low mileage NA. Just shows you how desirable they are even still in this crap economy.

Only 38K miles, Look how great the condition is on the Closed-Loop carpet is still in! Wow Looks like new! Not even a fray!

Love your NA folks! :slayer:

Miatas under 100k in my area usually go for no less than 5k-7k. Second they hit that 100k though the price drops in half. Its like a disease.

There are a bunch of Miata owners that are contrarian of this. But yeah, I agree; NA's have been on a price upswing for some time now...

This pisses me off... i want a beater NA to DD, and my main requirement is simply that it has a nice rust free body and chassis. Don't care about the rest. And i'm still looking at $3k for that, and i'm not paying $3k for a damn beater.

I have mine posted for $6500 with 100,000miles on it. In Ontario it's hard to find cheap miatas and since mine is a Californian car and in great condition I think it's a pretty fair price. Just waiting for the right buyer. There's Canadian cars posted for more than mine lol, maybe the value of rust is going up.....

How do you figure? As long as the "collector" kept things like fluids fresh its no different than any other NA on the road. The tires are probably the only thing that might need changing. Other than that it would probably run like a champ, these cars a bulletproof. I'm pretty sure this is Peter Warrick's old Miata (Owner of Miata World from years past) He actually had a personal mechanic that serviced his 12 or more Miata fleet that he was collecting over the years before he past away.

When I thought about selling my NA instead of the M3 last year, I was surprised how many people were interested in it. It was listed at $7000 firm at 150k miles and a known RMS leak + repaired lower rocker. No A/C, no softtop, hardtop only.

Only a handful of you guys that have been in the Miata game forever and a day will know about this guy and his collection, and most that know are from South Florida like me that have personal experience.

Emailed the seller, and confirmed my suspicions that this is in fact one of the many cars from Peter Warrick's private Collection!

This particular miata came from the Peter Warrick collection. Peter had approximately 32 Miatas - most if not all were in low mile, pristine condition.

Standard maintenance was performed by OEM and as a preventative clutch was replaced due to age.

I know from personal experience that Peter had a mechanic on payroll just to take care of his cars, whom I also have spoken to recently about his Miata collection. I met Peter a few times at the Eddie Accardi Mazda Dealership for the Annual Miata Only Car shows they used to have down there in Ft. Lauderdale. And I used to hang out with one of his employees and she was always telling me about the Miata Collection and how I needed to stop by and see the cars. I'm quite sure this car is worth the asking price! If I had not already recently bought a Miata I would be buying this one today!! grrrrrr Ask Joe at Rspeed he will tell you from when he used to live down there. Crazy how many cars he had. He even repainted a Miata in FHP Colors, installed a Supercharger and then Donated it to the FHP for when the FHP would visit schools and do promo stuff!! I have a spoof photo of me getting arrested by him and the FHP Miata from one of the All Florida Sunshine Sizzle Miata Meets. Have to dig that out now!! hahaha

The pricing is what the market will bear. There are people who will pay top dollar for these cars, if you you have the patience. I believe the Cash for Clunkers program took a LOT of used cars off the market, maybe not Miatas, but enough to thin the available vehicles. The point is supply and demand.

I bought my 1992 Mariner Blue in 2000 for $7500 with 39,000 mies on it. I looked for about a year for this exact car (mileage, options, color, LNC). Because it was a pleasure vehicle for its first 8 years, a lot of the seals were dried out and leaking within the first 2 years I bought it. To me, this car is still the best bargain of any car I have owned for what I have done with it and the cost to maintain. In almost 12 years and 130,000 miles of driving it, it has only left me stranded twice, both while the car was heavily modified.

I suppose if I was do it again, comparatively, I would be looking for an '04 for about $9-11k (increase of inflation over the last 12 years) with about 40k on it. Sounds like a great deal to me, considering the joy and reliability of my NA.

kung fu jesus
04-30-2012, 10:45 AM
On another note, if I sold my Miata, I still think it is worth much more above NADA or blue book. The modifications and maintenance are excellent and up to date. I will have a narrower audience of potential buyers, but I have the receipts and history to justify the price, in my mind. It would take me longer to sell it, perhaps, but the price is easily justifiable to the specified audience. I wouldn't make any money on the car, considering what I have put into it over the years, but it would certainly give me enough to move on to something decent.

I look at it this way; I would be more willing to spend more money on a properly maintained vehicle with quality modifications from an owner with a long history of owning the car vrs the same car from a younger owner with a short ownership history/more owners.

I bought mine in '01 with 69k for $5900. In the 11 years I've owned it, I've beaten the living sh!t out of this car and it comes back and asks for more. I can't ask for more from my little Mazda, but I just don't see the point in a low mileage Miata.

These cars are meant to be driven HARD. And if you buy a low mileage cream puff, once you start to drive it. The whole premium you paid for goes away. And there's no point in keeping them as garage queens, since they're not rolling pieces of art...

Other people can wait/buy low mileage Miatas all they want, but if I were to play that game, there are better cars out there worth waiting for.

powellwm (123) Seller Notes: “This is an amazing find, the car only had 20 miles on it when I bought it, 6.9 miles added because wasdelivered on a car dolly. This car was never registered or titled when I bought it, I now have a clean AZ title for it. It has the hard top and all options for the year built. There are some scratches on the car and one small dent (shown in pic) on front fender. The interior is in very good condition with a little fading on the convertible top (shown in pic). The hard top has 3/4in scratch on the pass side (shown in pic) otherwise in very good condition. I have taken out the plugs and put Marvel Mystery oil in the cyl's and turned engine over by hand and it seems to be ingood condition (turns over freely) I have all the paper work for the car (owners manual ect...) the tires are original and are weather cracked the drivers side tires are in worse condition with some splits. I hooked up a battery and the pwr windows work but drivers side is slow so my need lube. door speakers are bad.”

1990 MAZDA MIATA MX5 ROADSTER. This is a true barn find, has been in storage for 24 years in an enclosed building but with windows causing some fading in some areas. The car was never titled or registered, never issued a plate. I have only titled the car in my name to prove ownership. The car didn't have keys when I bought it so had to have keys made. The car was originally sold in NV but when I contacted Mazda the dealer is no longer in business. I have some original paperwork on the car such as dealer pre delivery check off sheet. The car only had 20 miles showing when I bought it but 6.9 miles was added when it was delivered on a car dolly. This car is all original except windshield wipers, haven't changed or added any fluids. I have only had the car detailed and cleaned up. There is some fading on the inside of the convertible top, the outside looks like new! The convertible rear window is clear but with some bad spots but is original. The exterior is in good condition with very nice paint, does have some scratches on hood and trunk, There is a small dent in the pass front fender. The hard top is in very good condition with one 3/4in scratch on the pass side, the glass is in great condition. The only thing I've done to the engine is taken out the plugs put a little Marvel Mystery oil in the cyls and turned over by hand, it turns over freely. Missing the battery and antenna otherwise complete. The original floor mats and tonneau cover in the trunk still in original never opened plastic bags.
I hope this car goes to someone who knows how to take care of it the way it should be done, after all where are you going to find a 1990 car with only 27 miles on it? I also has the original factory build sheet and owner manual.

This is the part that I'm wondering about? If it spins freely, why not try to start the car up??? Seems it would fetch more money if folks knew it was a running car? Although he is getting a pretty penny for it as it sits now.

It was a smart move on the seller's part. If he fills it with fluids, attempts to start it and oil pukes from every dry-rotted seal in the engine (which is a risk since the car has sat for 23 years), he will have to rebuild it to sell it. And you have to rebuild that engine, to keep it's originality. Even then it's no longer "original". And then, you probably still only get 15K for the car. Maybe even less. The risk (and it's a big one) gets passed onto the buyer instead. It's probably gonna take a lot of work to make it drivable again.

^ that's just wrong! ...and well overpriced

I sold my 31k mile cherry mint 1990 Miata WITH factory hardtop, boot cover and original floor mats for $6000 back in October 2009

That was also the really bad part of the down economy, at least here, and 5 years ago.

IF this was a MINT example I would agree with the asking price,

however, the interior shows a LOT of sun fade in the rear shelf carpet, seats, and floor mats look funky.

the passenger side door looks like it has had damage

damage to the front bumper cover from improperly installing the front license plate holder :fp:

the engine bay looks more like a 100K mile car, yuck.

clearly a rust belt car, just looking at the engine bay I can only imagine how bad the undercarriage looks, probably rusty

I would say the only thing giving this car value is the low mileage, but I would not pay more than $5000 tops. that engine bay just kills it for me.

This BRG has been a "southern" car since day one. Originally purchased by a Kentucky man for his wife on May 11, 1991 (I have all service records from the beginning plus a lot of the original ownership paperwork). She drove it 32,000 miles over the next 19 years before selling it in late-2010 to a resident of Hendersonville, NC.

The second owner was a serious "car guy" and became an active member of the Ridgerunner Miata Club. Unfortunately, serious health issues forced the sale and the BRG moved further south when I bought it in March 2012. By the way, it is located in a north Georgia development called Big Canoe that is just north of GA 53 between Jasper and Dawsonville, GA.

From the time of the BRG's delivery from the dealer's inventory in 1991 to the present it has been garage kept, often under the Griot's Garage car cover shown in the photo album. The car has never been in an accident nor has it ever been abused. All "VIN" stickers are where they should be.

The BRG is equipped with a 5-speed, PS, PB, cold A/C, limited slip differential, cruse, power windows and the original factory hardtop. It has the "big nose" crank (TB and water pump not done - too early). I added "Jaspe" pattern Cocomats from Cocomats.com (I have the original SE mats in good condition that are included) and a Hard Dog hidden tow hitch (used only to mount a receiver hitch bike carrier).

The previous owner had Pilot "ignition sensitive" driving lights, a Bad Boy air horn and a Cobra WX ST 75 CB radio w/Jeff Anderson antenna "splitter" installed by forum member "JJHarrell" and others at the Ridgerunner Miata Club. The door speakers were also replaced during that time with ARC Audio model XXD 6029 units.

Everything works as it should. The car runs strong, drives great.

During my two year ownership period I replaced the spark plugs, replaced the inner (rubber) shift boot, dust cover and leather shift boot, replaced all cooling system hoses (OEM w/OEM clamps where needed), replaced the fuel filler hose and "breather" hose, removed the dash and refinished the dash top and instrument pod cover (had the tan-interior sticky dash problem), replaced the radio surround panel, changed the oil/filter (Mobil 1 5w30 on 3/10/2014).

Hector at RSpeed took care of the following for me: replaced the plug wires, valve cover gasket, CAS "O" ring, trans fluid, differential fluid, installed new KYB Excel-G shocks and Fat Cat Motorsports bump stops/boots, flush cooling system (3/10/2014).

During the past few days I had the exterior professionally detailed by Sullivan Auto Detailing (no affiliation) in Marietta, GA. The interior was brought to near-showroom condition by a friend who owns a professional auto interior repair business catering to Atlanta-area dealerships. In both cases the pros commented on how great my car looked and then proceeded to make it look much better.

Of course a 23-year old car is bound to have a few flaws. There are a few minor touch-up areas in the finish that are hard to see (and impossible to photograph). One such area is a thin 1-1/2" long strip on the real bumped above the exhaust pipe. The original owner scraped that area and then apparently used brush-on touch-up paint to cover the spot. That said the car is basically free of any noticeable exterior flaws (paraphrasing forum member Frank Reiss) - no dents and no hail "dings."

The other area worth mentioning is the radio. In August 1999 the original owner replaced the non-functioning OEM CD player with a Panasonic AM/FM/single CD unit. The installer of the Panasonic knew what he was doing because the unit is wired to an adaptor that plugged into the stock Miata harness - no wires were cut. It was my intention to either have the OEM Miata radio reconditioned by Jeff Anderson (adding mp3 playing capabilities) or buy a JDM-type radio surround and put in a modern double din head unit. At this point I'm going to leave it as is. The Panasonic works great, by the way, through the door and headrest speakers.

The link below is to the 50+ Photobucket album/slideshow. I think it covers just about everything that could be photographed.

Please feel free to send me a PM if you have any questions.

Best regards, Ed

This brings up and interesting question. If price and options were the same on both the 1990 Silver, and the 1991 BRG, which would you get? The 1990 is sure to have the short nose crank, where as the 1991 will have the long nose crank. Both are pretty scare, the BRG being more well known, but there aren't a whole bunch of silver Miatas out there either.

Another low mileage NA popped up on our local forum!!

1990 Mariner Blue Miata, 28k miles, 5sp, A pkg, A/C, $7900

http://www.mx5atlanta.com/forums/showthread.php?24119-1990-Mariner-Blue-Miata-28k-miles-5sp-A-pkg-A-C-7900

For sale is a 1990 Mazda Miata with just over 28,200 miles, the Mariner Blue color was only offered from 1990-1993. Car is in outstanding condition, it looks like new, no accidents, no rust, no stories. It has a five speed transmission, air conditioning and came with the factory “A” package which included: power steering, leather wrapped steering wheel, alloy wheels and AM/FM cassette stereo. The car has manual windows, factory luggage rack and includes the original factory floor mats and boot cover for the convertible top when down. The convertible top was recently replaced with a very nice black cloth (not vinyl) top with zip out rear vinyl window that is perfectly clear, no cracks or scratches. Falken tires are recent and in excellent shape with plenty of tread life left and all fluids have recently been replaced (oil, transmission, differential, coolant, brake and clutch). Belts and all coolant hoses have been replaced with OEM Mazda ones, (Rosenthal kit and yes, the Miata gods have already gotten their heater hose and water plug blood sacrifice), new spark plugs, wires, and air filter have also been installed. Receipts and old parts available. For those worried about it, the crankshaft bolt is untouched (pic in gallery), everything is tight and after much reading it was evident that the best course of action was to do nothing to it. Car runs fantastic and is ready for many more years of top down driving, ready to go anywhere. 60+ pictures can be found here (my apologies, interior kept coming out as washed out/purple in bright sunlight, it is indeed black and unfaded):
https://picasaweb.google.com/plindla...eat=directlink

Car is located midway between Nashville and Chattanooga (zip 37356). Serious inquiries only, please contact via PM and thanks for looking!

1991 Mazda Miata jm1na3517m0201521
4,353 miles
$16,500

Here is a rare opportunity. Up for sale is the lowest mileage first generation Miata currently on the market. It's a 1991 Mazda Miata with 4,353 documented original miles and has always been garage kept. All options available for the year including the pricey hard top are here. As expected, the car is absolutely in showroom new condition with no issues of any kind (mechanically or cosmetically.) It still smells new inside. The original factory bar code stickers still remain on the center console, rear package tray carpet and convertible top boot. The factory convertible top window still has the original protective slip paper on both sides of the glass (which was removed only for pictures and is now back in place). The factory convertible top boot is still sealed in the original bag with the factory bar code decal in place. All factory panel VIN tags, safety/information decals/tags are in place and glossy new. All factory books, service records, factory paperwork, original Mazda window sticker, original Mazda purchase invoice, lug lock key, 2 keys, factory plastic Mazda wallet key, original Paul Miller Mazda license plate, frame and original front license plate bracket are included. Also, the spare tire, jack and tools have never left the trunk and are still in the factory Mazda covers (see picture).

History: The car was originally purchased from Paul Miller Mazda in Lexington KY in 1991. The car spent the majority of its life with the original female owner in Kentucky. The rest of the time was spent in one of Texas's largest personal car collections of 400+ cars. The cars in this collection are serviced on a schedule by a staff of ASE certified mechanics. (A/C blows cold) No mechanical issues whatsoever, just a fantastic like new 4,353 mile car. Now is your rare chance to own a documented 4,353 mile piece of Japanese sports car history which will do nothing but increase in value. Don't let it slip away!!

That is a myth, if it is started every week, and driven a little they are fine, mine has 9800 miles and runs like a champ. I do start mine every weekend, and drive it up and down the country road near my house.

Agreed. Purchased mine with just over 60k. And it was just fine. Only 1000 Miles put on it a year by PO. He had it for 12 years. Rest of them came from 1st owner.

Some people simply don't understand how to sell a car or just aren't that motivated.

It is absolutely mind boggling in this day and age that people are so stubborn and/or lazy to take a few pictures upon request and upload them to one of the many easy to use and free online photo hosting sites.

There is no excuse for a lack of pictures on any ad.

Celebrate the 26th Anniversary of the Miata with the Legend. Introduced to the world in May 1989. While many have been made, very few exist like this one. This mint example was one of the first Miata’s ever made (Built May 1989!!!). This low mileage car wears its original paint and original top. More than $8K for a 45K 1990 without a hardtop. Man, this is getting foolish!

Bring a Trailer seems to be the online auction benchmark for the upper end of the market.
It will be interesting to see what these two different, but both exceptional Miata's go for over the next few days.
(We need a word for plural Miata, maybe Miatai !!)

Low miles, adult owned, and garage kept are just words that you should not apply any value to until you have seen a car in person.

I've seen too many Miatas being sold with those words only for their actual condition to not match.

44k mile MSM? Don't give a shit. I know of a 25k mile MSM that was described as pristine by the previous owner. The man had an odd definition of that word. It was also garage kept, but that didn't make a difference. I can say so much more, but it's best I don't.

And early completely stock NAs going for $7k+ and they aren't even special editions ('91 BRG, '92 Black & Tan, '93LE, etc.)? I don't know what to say, but I feel like they have no business being priced, let alone selling that high.

Low mileage is nice, but only when the condition lines up. Otherwise, condition is king and low miles alone is a sucker's game.

I was watching the Mecum auction and my impression is the market has tanked. Cars were selling for 10-15K less than I would expect. The Miata market seems to be increasing in value and I'm not sure why. 8k for a red 90? That's a 6k car with hardtop. Really odd valuations.

Those things tend to go in waves with years of the cars.

The people who drive the prices up are wanting a car they dreamed about when they were new, but unable to afford. And they now have them money to spend on an example that is as close to that ideal as possible. That would now be the 1980's and 1990's YM.

The last wave of buyers is getting older and is wanting to sell the cars they bought to scratch that itch. So now the cars from the 60's are loosing a bit of value as the hoarders let go to fund their retirement dreams.
