Guide to 1st Generation NA Miatas all the models and packages

Now that the 1st generation Miata is starting to become more collectible (at least clean examples anyway) I figured it would be nice to show all of the available colors and options for our iconic and now classic Mazda MX-5 Miata Roadster.

Mazda Japan started a factory based "refresh" restoration program for the original Eunos Roadster in Japan several years ago, and now they are releasing some remade parts for our cars, which is great news for us NA owners!

If you are looking at buying a used NA Miata this thread is for you, here you can see all the colors and options available for each year of the NA Miata 1989 to 1997.

And if you have a question about buying one or one you own post it up, all the members will chime in to help. Since there are some other versions that had been released in Japan and Europe that we did not see in the USA hopefully some of friends overseas can fill in some blanks for us?

If you are looking for a quick reference to which models had what options you can print out this PDF file that has all you need to know
http://mazdaroadster.net/Miata90-97Specs/Miata90-97A3.pdf

As promised from my personal collection, I dug out ALL of my old magazines, and Mazda ads, I have scanned all but a few that are too large for my scanner so Ill have to take a photo and upload later.

This was the FIRST ad for the Miata that appeared back in early 1988 ~ 1989. This was when it was still kinda top secret, as the ad just gave some hints what what it might look like.

1989 Miata

Three Cheers for the Red, White, and Blue!

Miata that is.....

This was the first 3 colors introduced to Mazda Dealerships in the USA.

Classic Red
Crystal White
Mariner Blue

No, they are not special editions however they are the first colors to hit the streets in the USA and Worldwide, so surely they are worth mentioning.

This was the accessories ad, they had a HUGE poster in the dealerships that said something like "let's hear it for the red, white, & blue" I have the poster, I'll have to take a photo of that and post it later as well.

1992 Sunburst Yellow

The Sunburst Yellow was a $250 option and Mazda advertised that it used 3 coats of paint. This was not a special edition or special model in the U.S. however it was very limited as far as the amount produced.

Equipment: All Yellows came with the A option package: power steering, leather-wrapped steering wheel, alloy wheels, AM-FM/cassette stereo. Yellow hardtop and automatic transmissions were options. Most Yellows had premium floor mats with the yellow "Miata" logo, air conditioning, and limited slip differential.

Production: There was only 1519 Produced from December 1991 through April 1, 1992, with just 20 early models made in August 1991, 147 were automatics and 519 had factory hardtops. Sunburst Yellow is the rarest production color and was never used on any model except the Miata.

Base MSRP: $16,420 plus $350 freight, plus options, not including the dealer markup.

Brochures: The Yellow Miata was shown in the second 1992 sales catalog and also in a print advertisement (show Below). A Canadian flier showed their Black SE and Sunburst Yellow LE

This color Miata was so unpopular that most dealerships started leaving them at the docks. Now they are an extremely popular color that many folks are after!!

Way back in the day....

One of my ventures to get my hands clean from wrench-turning was to become a car salesman. That lasted less than a month. :frantic: But while I was a salesman I did manage to sale the first/only BRG MX-5 and a Used 944 Porsche that was on the lot. Not a lot of swindler in me. I believe that the only thing people will remember is that I was honest.
