View Full Version : "Monty" WINS at NASA Infineon 4-Hour Enduro!

Epic 4-hour endurance race that included some rain at around the halfway mark. I had already been screwed by a full-course yellow to catch P1 during the rain and fell a full lap down with P1 needing to still do one more fuel stop. Post stop, I was still 30 seconds back.

With 3.5 hours down, I had to boogie to catch the leader in E3 class for the win. This is one of the craziest situations I had to push myself into for a win. Monty was long overdue for a NASA win and I wanted it bad.

And I noticed kung fu jesus slipping a Mazda Roadster sticker on my cage for good measure before I departed SoCal for the race. ;)

I don't think he punted me on purpose. It is racing, but at the time, I couldn't help vocalizing my frustration on the radio. I know Monty was a former Chumpcar and it is a little beat up, but I do not want to hurt it anymore than it already has.

By the way, thank you for helping me tow Monty to and from the race. After racing the 4 hours by myself I don't think I could have made it back.

Here's a good reason why I made up my 30-second gap late in the race, but it's the same reason why I got unlucky and had the gap in the first place (full-course yellow and got stuck behind the safety car).

Thank you sir. And fortunately enough, I had another day in a rain just last weekend at Laguna Seca. That time I was in Team 949 Racing's main enduro E1 car,Crusher, with Grand Am rain tires. It was like another dimension...

Great vid's Sonny. I'm always amazed at your ability to consistently drive the car on the edge but not lose it, even in an enduro race. Most people don't seem to push as hard.

I still don't understand the hand shuffling though, if I shuffled my hands that much my driving would be super rough.

It's Sonny's style. Some drivers shuffle a lot, some turn and stick.

That video in the rain looked like a lot of fun; great driving! Nice little slides in there too.

Part of it is because Monty's suspension is still not completely refined to my liking. The other part is what kung fu jesus says.

The trick is the desired result is the clock. If your lap times say you are fast shuffling the wheel, awesome. Fast while smooth, cool also. Just find a driving style that best fits you and your car's behavior that nets you the speed you require on command.

You know, I've never thought about trying to compare my times using the different methods. I've always been one to stick and go hand over hand when needed and I've never had any major issues with crossing over or anything like that. I never thought that doing it the other way could be faster, even if it doesn't feel faster. Next time I'm at the track I'll try to do some comparisons!
