View Full Version : What did you do to your NC today?

The NA and NB's have this thread, not sure why someone hasn't started one for NC's yet! I always loved these kinds of threads because it can give you ideas of what to do to your car after you see it done on someone else's car, or if you're a mod pioneer you can share your mods you did to show others. There's always something to do to your car, post up what you did to your NC today!

You need to move to a better neighbourhood amigo. ;)

Stuff I did to the BlackChicken lately? Let's see... rear diff fluid swap to full synthetic, full blackout on chrome exterior trim, had Canuck help me swap Piano Black trim to dash, and (just 5 minutes ago) powerslid my old NB around a corner on the way to McDonald's.

On topic: I ignored my car today. She'll probably punish me for it.

DIY oil change few days ago. Jack or put front on ramps, remove the metal stiffening bracket (5 bolts) ... some people call this the "access plate"... and it is straightforward from there.

Grumpy
05-15-2012, 10:45 AM
Does removing that plate really make a difference? I just go in from behind the drivers side wheel. I get a bit of slop but its kind of inevitable with being on ramps or jackstands, and with the filter being right over that metal piece. I have eliminates the mess from draining with a fumoto valve. So am not that far from a completely mess free oil change.

Picked up my Hawk HP+ pads for front and rear.. Getting ready for SOW in July

blackchicken
05-24-2012, 10:24 PM
Grumpy - try pulling the plate next time as I think you will like the greater access. It's 5 bolts so takes an extra minute plus you can clean the plate back to "new" when it's off the car. :)

Grumpy
06-07-2012, 03:39 PM
blackchicken, thx, may try it.
Today, picked up oem brake pads for install tomorrow. First replacement pads in 53k miles. I'm not driving hard enough I guess!

JonB
06-07-2012, 03:44 PM
I had about 30% pad life left when I replaced my pads before MRLS. That was with about 65k, lol.

i need to instal the freaking license plate, i got pull over 2 times this week so far, i think the excuse of "i just got'it on the may but the dint ship me the screws" its no going to work for a long time xD

Grumpy
06-08-2012, 03:58 PM
Front brake pads replaced. Didn't quite hit the squealers, but another canyon run or 2 and I would've. Rears are still good. I"ll probably have to replace them when it's time to do the fronts again, LOL

Johnnie

Swapped on my autocross tires. Forgot to check the brakes. D'oh!

Grumpy
06-10-2012, 09:02 PM
That's ok, hopefully they lasted you the day! how'd it go?
Forgot to mention, My
front tires are just about at wear bars. I can't afford new tires now, just paid for brakes! crap. no canyon runs for me for a while! That might explain the slight understeer I had on our last run though!

Johnnie
06-11-2012, 06:31 AM
Li'l Stinker kicked butt!

My co-driver was the fastest on street tires and 3rd fastest overall. I finished just outside the top ten at 12th overall, 5th in class.

Replaced rubber bushings on the rear bar with poly ones. I spent more time playing with the jack than I did with the actual removal and install. ( one of the hazards of having no garage, and no storage place for the assembled jack. LOL)

Johnnie
06-13-2012, 07:20 PM
Grumpy, what sway bar setup do you have?

Grumpy
06-13-2012, 07:55 PM
Yellow dot RX-8 front and rear, with the poly bushings in the back. I've got a bit of understeer, but am unsure how much is due to my front tires being at the wear bars. Once I get money and get new tires, I'll find out. If the understeer continues, I'll either press the rear bar and drill new holes (basically make the bar an adjustable one) or I may at some point get a red dot front rx8 bar that isn't as stiff, so it should introduce a bit of oversteer. I'd rather get the rear to step out a bit than the plowing I currently have.

Johnnie
06-13-2012, 08:22 PM
I was able to unlock more grip out front (thus balancing out the understeer) by dialing in more negative camber. More grip= faster.

Grumpy
06-13-2012, 08:39 PM
gotcha. I'm only running -1.2 in front and -1.5 in the back. It's a daily driver, no track or autocross, and I didn't want to worry about uneven wear. It's working so far in that regard, nice and even across the tread.

Johnnie
06-14-2012, 09:08 AM
I run about .4 more neg camber in the front than rear. Works with the big bar.

NC area needs more love. Today I did 2 things. Cleaned my drains as shown here (http://mazdaroadster.net/showthread.php?3835-Drain-cleaning-on-an-NC-with-the-Drain-TSB-done) and finally got rid of the haze (mostly) on the headlights. the headlight polisher kit worked much better than expected. I am not a huge believer in many of the diy things like that, but in this case, the kit I got at Harbor Freight worked well.

added a RAM mount for my phone. With my pt job requiring travel to stores in the new unfamilliar area, I am using the navigation a ton. Had 3 cheap mounts that all broke, so finally decided to get quality. With the ram mount being aluminum and rubber, it is highly unlikely that it will break. If I decide to change where I want to mount it, I can get a new mount point, and still be able to use most of the rest of what I have now.

Grumpy

That wouldve worked except I had the tsb done so there is a blue filter that was put in. I have at this point checked and cleared the drains (there was nothing in there that was blocking it.)

Grumpy
02-09-2013, 10:11 AM
I think in that case the culprit may be a reported hole covered by tape. It's located under the chrome plates where the hardtop gets attached. I'm going to be checking the cowl under the windshield wipers reportedly there's a hole there too.

So yesterday was. Have fun with the car day. I checked and the 2 holes were uncovered, the one in the front was the most likely culprit. I taped those up and then moved onto the chrome windshield surround I mentioned in my build thread.
I did the windshield while the paint was drying on my slightly car related project. 4 coats of black, followed by a sticker and 4 coats of clear on an otterbox.
