Okay so I'm convinced to start a build thread of my car, and if you guys have been looking at some "post your white/NA" threads, you'll so my car posted on there. The car initially had bigger plans but because of different priorities, things have changed a little.

My previous car before the red miata was a 92 Honda civic dx. It's the car that taught me many things, including wrenching and basic car knowledge.

http://www.matt-kwok.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/20100930-Matt-Kwok-matteg-05.jpg

The car that I have now is a 95 miata with around 180kms on the clock. (110-120k for miles?) I'm the second owner, and the car has never been into any major accidents. We checked with a paint thickness meter and all panels are oem specs except for the driver's front fender. We worked out a reasonable price from the original owner. I have to thank Beck from clubroadster.net for coming along and making sure it's a sound purchase. Check out his build thread here: (http://clubroadster.net/vb_forum/showthread.php?t=46859)

This would be the third miata in the family. First was a red 90 rust bucket that my brother owned. The second was a red 90 as well but that was later sold in pursue for the cleanest miata for myself.

A picture of the car when the original owner sent me before I went to see it:
http://img577.imageshack.us/img577/7005/imagenvd.jpg

Over the year, there are little things done here and there, but nothing major. The biggest mod was probably the flyinmiata frame rails and tein flex 7/6 coilovers. This car will be prepped for track but so far the setup is not proper. Then again I'm trying to enjoy driving and keeping it simple than building it to break records (my driving would probably not cut it either).

Here is how the car looks like right now:
http://www.matt-kwok.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/20120414-Matt-Kwok-miata-01.jpg

I like how the car sits right now. The rear will probably drop a little bit more with the roll bar installed. I spent countless hours researching on Xida CS coilovers and was pretty firm on buying them until a set of used good condition Tein Flex popped up in the used section on buy and sell. I know they're a huge difference but these will do for now.

Over the next few weeks I'll try to post more things on the build thread, as I'm usually busy with shooting weddings and cars. I'll try my best to keep this up to date!

tried plasti dip to see what the big deal is all about. painted my cluster cover so it won't be as reflective, and wow, these stuff scratches really easily. It's pretty much spray on rubber. Dust sticks on and really hard to come off. Oh well :(

This is very minor but i may as well post it up. My cluster was pretty scratched so I decided to polish it lol

Before:

After. The cuts are pretty deep so I did the best I could. :(

The cluster came out pretty good! It's crazy how something like that can get so dinged up.

Nice work! One of our more colorful mods (Yellow Yata) did up a nice DIY thread about polishing the instrument gauge plastic:

So the next thing I got are these gauge rings from Rspeed (http://www.rspeed.net/). Joe at Rspeed was great help replies quickly. He called me and I was very pleased with his service. Recommended for sure!

2 versions, the chrome and the diamond tooled ones

diamond tooled

http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/8077/20120420mattkwokrsgr03.jpg

these are the ones I end up going with. The diamond tooled ones look better in my car imo and so they're here to stay. I'm jealous of 1.6L owners with the better looking dash but i have to say these are pretty clean and definitely makes the car more classy.

update: went to pickup these yesterday. Bought them from cww180 on mazdaroadster.net

I'm still deciding if I should keep these because they don't go well with my car.
http://img69.imageshack.us/img69/6727/20120428mattkwokrsgr03.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/69/20120428mattkwokrsgr03.jpg/)

Second was this. I'm actually quite shocked of what I got from the mail.
http://img819.imageshack.us/img819/3039/20120428mattkwokrsgr04.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/819/20120428mattkwokrsgr04.jpg/)

And this is what he posted on the for sale thread:
http://img811.imageshack.us/img811/2333/roadster.jpg

I was not very pleased when I first looked at it. They're very beat up and not the exact ones he posted. I'm just waiting for cww180's reply now as he said he'll follow up for me.

rikaro
04-29-2012, 09:03 PM
so problem resolved with cww180. We settled it down and I end up keeping the set. He was very kind so I won't make a big deal out of it. May be I'll restore those badges. We'll see.

Long story short. I've decided to keep the badges, but because they're so beat up, I am going to refinish it to make it look more unique.

so i got to work

The oem paint is no good so I probably have to strip everything down and repaint it. I have something in mind already
http://img52.imageshack.us/img52/8896/20120429mattkwokvs01.jpg

stripped till it's clean. Never seen a clear v-special badge haha
http://img137.imageshack.us/img137/762/20120429mattkwokvs02.jpg

another shot
http://img819.imageshack.us/img819/2116/20120430mattkwokvs03.jpg

and I painted it white!
http://img692.imageshack.us/img692/971/20120430mattkwokvs04.jpg

The front. I think the oven cleaner was too strong for the plastic, so it made a few hairline cracks on it. Oh well :(
http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/6236/20120430mattkwokvs05.jpg

it's going to look better hopefully lol

While I met up with my friends, they're all plasti dipping things so I got bored and did this:
http://img193.imageshack.us/img193/4568/20120505mattkwokmay10.jpg

They don't look all that bad. Makes the car look cleaner but I doubt they're legal hahaha

and a shot of the frame rails just because

shot the sunset
http://img832.imageshack.us/img832/9773/20120505mattkwokmay14.jpg

ps i'm still working on those badges. I think I'm stuck now because they're cracked and I don't want them on the car yet haha. :(

Been quite busy lately. Did a photoshoot for Vossen wheels, went to shoot for friend's track day and prepping my car for track. I'm trying to do as much update on the miata as possible, but hopefully those will come in the next few days... mean while, there are some pics from my friend's track day that you guys can look at.

so here's the update. I test fitted the badge on but I didn't really like it. I took it off again tonight to have it repainted.

got some new parts on the car too. Most noticeably is the hard dog hardcore roll bar. Wasn't fun to install but the difference was noticeable. The car is much more steadier on higher speeds.

New parts coming in too as we speak. Will keep you guys updated!

a really quick picture update:

This is the final look of the badge. I sanded it down and painted the back black. The ring around it is gloss black now.

And my grey roll bar. It's wetsanded and polished so it's shinny now :)

This might possibly the last things going to the car for this year. Over the past month I've been busy working on the car prepping for track day. Most of the things are done now other than the test pipe I have in mind, but I'm still deciding if I should or not. Track day was supposed to be tomorrow but the ugly weather said no. Anyway this is the "updated" version of the car. It's quite different compared to how it looked before.

Picking up the wheels, this reminds me of Slevin's shot, except with fake wheels :(

thanksJust a quick update on the car. Raised the car up and had an alignment done today. The best they could do for the camber was -2.8 front and -2.7 rear. Caster is still pretty crazy at 5. 0 toe front and rear. I'll track it first next month and then decide what to do with the alignment.

Power steering. Doesn't make any difference does it?

Doward
06-23-2012, 05:30 PM
Not exactly. Some people like less caster with manual steering to ease steering effort. But sometimes you have to sacrifice caster to get camber to match on these cars.

KAL
06-24-2012, 06:38 AM
I have a '89 with manual steering and i just had my adjustments. I asked for as low caster as possible, because of wide tires and making it easier to throw into roundabouts (and beeing able to catch it again ;) ). I got 3.8 (down from 6.7) and now i can't get more than 1.6 degrees of camber in front. Its really fun! FM states maximum caster for their setup (servo).

I've actually notice the car hopping a little during tight turns. I don't know what causes it. May be it's not enough shock travel in the front but I have no clue. I just follow Emilio's race alignment on his website but I'm a little off lol

so i'm missing tones of update lol. Nothing much has been done to the car other than mazdaspeed engine mounts, removed soft top and plastidipped my wheels.

Been out on (and off lol) the track on the 21st at the ridge motorsports park from turn 2. Fastest run of the day was 2:07 while i'm pretty sure I can run 2:06. It was wet in the morning and I was struggling to drive smoothly. Open diff is really a pain in the ass :(

Here's a video of my friend following me. He's driving a ek civic 4 dr with a k20 swap, re11. I'm on star specs.

New update!

I have insured the miata for the summer and now making plans on making the car faster this year. During the winter I've bought 2 cars (not like me! really!). The first one was a 1987 325e with is conversion parts on it. It has an LSD and boy was that fun! Eventually I sold the car because I was planning to insure my miata but bought a 318is the same night I sold my car. The 318is was not perfect either, but I've been ordering parts and fixing that up slowly. The only thing that bugs me with this car now is the open diff. There are plans for a factory lsd but we'll see :)

I wanted a jet black but this color is starting to grow on me
http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/6782/20130411mattkwok318miat.jpg (http://img16.imageshack.us/i/20130411mattkwok318miat.jpg/)

http://img40.imageshack.us/img40/6782/20130411mattkwok318miat.jpg (http://img40.imageshack.us/i/20130411mattkwok318miat.jpg/)

The first day when I uninsured the car I took off the trim pieces and prepped them for paint. Scratches on all four corners give you an idea of how careless the previous driver was. Cracked fog light and bent bumper but I'll address that later.
http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/6782/20130411mattkwok318miat.jpg (http://img132.imageshack.us/i/20130411mattkwok318miat.jpg/)

http://img90.imageshack.us/img90/6782/20130411mattkwok318miat.jpg (http://img90.imageshack.us/i/20130411mattkwok318miat.jpg/)

One rip on the driver's seat but it's acceptable to me.
http://img541.imageshack.us/img541/6782/20130411mattkwok318miat.jpg (http://img541.imageshack.us/i/20130411mattkwok318miat.jpg/)

So on to the miata..

This year's goal is to track this car and set some new time records (personal time records lol) The best time I've managed at the Ridge Motorsports Park is 2:06:xxx. That's on 205/50/15 star specs, xp10/8, tein flex and that's pretty much it (You can scroll back a few pages to see what mods was made on this car). The plan this year is to break the 2:02:xxx mark. May be a bit overshot but it should be manageable. The mods going on this year are:

-(waiting for stock) Hoosier R6 205/50/15 (or Conti race slicks, pretty much the same thing but harder compound)
-(bought) factory 1.8 torsen
-(bought) nb 4.3 final drive
-(bought) 1.6 clutch and fidanza flywheel
-(still looking for one) racing beat hollow front sway

How can this be an update without some pictures of the car? :P

Okay guys. So i guess it's time to update you guys. I ran a 2:06 last time from the Ridge. I just came back with a 2:04:38 which I'm quite happy about. I know there are still things I can do to improve to shave off more time. My driving was sloppy. My excuse was bad sleep (in fact almost no sleep at all) and for the whole morning I'm just cruising on the track. Track temp was low too with a few drops of rain so nothing was too exciting in the morning.

The day before. We all drove down at 7pm for 4 hours to get to our hotel. We usually stay overnight and track in the morning.

http://imageshack.us/a/img706/549/wb6b.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/706/wb6b.jpg/)

Okay, back to my car. When I get my 4.3 diff and torsen on, the next thing on the list is definitely stiffer front springs. The car could go hotter into the corners but the car is currently to unstable. Imaging going 170km/h into a corner and trying to brake hard for the next turn. The suspension is also tucking a lot, allowing the tires to make contact with the chassis. Xidas was on my list (so much to the point that i want to get the 949racing handling package with the sways and everything because I'm still running on stock sways.

One of the things I'm quite surprised is the brakes. They brake hard with xp10/8 on r comp and they brake and brake and brake and they don't fade. May be on a hotter day the brakes will start to fade.

I definitely want more power, but at the moment I'm just enjoying the car. More power will equal to upgrade in everything.

not much update on the car. Been daily driving it and nothing much atm. Trying to get my lsd with the 4.3 installed sometime in the next 2 weeks. Unfortunately I decided not to do it myself because I don't want to take the risk of having the car die on me due to my lack of experience in assembling it.

meanwhile here are some new pics of the car. Been trying to keep it as clean as I could.

Update:
Got my 4.3 and torsen installed. The car feels very different from the 4.1 and open diff setup. I was still getting used to it but the unfortunate happened. The motor had rod knocking noise and so I had to pit. I was quite surprised. Oil was filled up to the top line and I was on star specs. My R comp wasn't even on yet! Had to get the car towed 360km back home. :(

Any input from anyone experienced with track and miata motors? The track does have some high G corners but I read on many forums that people never had a problem with it. What does spec miata run? I'm trying to figure out something so I can prevent it next time. The motor is fully stock.

Here's a video of me attempting to chase my friends in the exige and e36 m3 before the motor died.

I just want to give you guys an update since it hasn't been up to date here on mazdaroadster.

I've been busy with work so I had no time to work on the car. Now I have a week of free time so I'm going to do as much as I can.

So far I've sent the motor in along with the 949racing damper, and Boundary Engineering V3 oil pump. It'll be balanced on oem BP6D crank and rods/pistons on 10.5:1 compression. I know you guys would be like "wtf why no forged internals!?" and my answer is that I wanted to keep the car relatively stock. I guess it's sort of OEM+

I wanted to do a quick review on the Boundary Engineering oil pump. I'm actually quite stoked to get this piece. It's one of the nicer pieces in the build and I do want to show you guys what you are getting if you do decide to buy.

I really don't think there's a nicer pump with billet gear when it comes to this for our cars. It's also reasonably priced and I bought it for a piece of mind. I know eventually I can go for a crazier build with this pump if needed. It might be a bit overkill for my build but I'm not complaining :)

The one I bought is the Stage II pump:
http://www.boundarypumps.com/mazdafordmercury4cylinder/stage-ii-oil-pump
It was necessary to buy the Stage II oil pump for the VVT motor.

The box. Well packaged and shipped quickly

Unboxed. The pump sealed in a plastic bag.

Overall I can't be more impressed. 10/10. It's being put together by my engine builder so hoepfully no more problems from here on. I was told that the motor was previously failed was largely possible the fact that the last guy who assembled my block applied too much RTV which resulted in low oil pressure. Lesson learned :(

I also did some cleaning today. I don't know how you guys do it. It seemed so easy until I started cleaning mine. I used Simple Green with pressure washer. I should've used the Easy Off oven stuff. The PPF was the easier one to clean than the tranny.

PPF Before:

Now I have a question: Do you guys clean off ALL the dirt and grease before spraying the tranny or just do your best?

Too much RTV where? On the pump face or the oil pan gasket?

For cleaning, I do as well as I can with the time allowed. Thus drives my friends nuts because I usually wind up with 'surgically clean' stuff. EZ Off is great for cleaning the bell housing, but don't leave it on to dry. Wear gloves and glasses too.

I had that sitting on the shelf in the garage. Simple Green was still okay. Wasn't that bad but I spent 3 hours scubing

I started doing some cleaning and painting today but I noticed my starter motor is missing a bracket. It's the one connecting to the bracket in the front here. Necessary to buy a replacement?

A little heartbreaking to see how the last guy worked on the car. Missing pieces here and there.*f'k

I know the NB starters will work on the NA motors. They are lighter and smaller. The third bolt doesn't match up, but people say it still works fine. I just replaced mine stock for stock when I rebuilt my motor two months ago. I figured it should be put out to pasture for it's 20+ years of service.

Woo hooo i ordered something that I wanted for a very long time. Will post update once I get it!

Still waiting for engine to come back so I guess there's not much to do other than to finish up installing gauges. I am working on something a little different tomorrow. Will update!

Here's a newly edited video from 2013 track day. I miss it dearly so hopefully I can make it in September for the shake down.

All the current photos are uploaded to google and not imageshack so these should stay :)

I've been advised not to reuse the oil cooler because the metal bits might still be inside and is next to impossible to clean it out. Does anyone know where I can source a good one? I'm hoping not to rebuild it again haha :(

I can't help with the oil cooler, but was there any evidence that described how the rod bearing spun? Which piston rod spun? Just curious.

I remember (vaguely) some racers in the early '00s with FWD BP-powered racecars, like Escort GTs, Protege LXs, etc., would chamfer the oil passages on the crankshaft because of oil starvation issues at higher RPMs or lateral G loads. It's been a long time since I discussed that but I seem to recall the pump was cavitating? The only Miata-related oil pressure change I have discussed with racers was a dip under hard braking. I installed a static baffle in my sump when I rebuilt my engine this year for some protection.

As for forged internals, I have the same opinion. The stock pieces work quite well unless you are running higher than stock RPMs or power levels. Even then, the times I ran F/I, I didn't have issues in the stock engine. This lump was designed for F/I. It made little sense to me to add super-duper internals on an engine that sees more street use than track.

For less than the price of forged parts alone, you can be build a very nice hopped up engine on stock internals.

I got a replacement oil cooler so that should solve the problem.

If I remember correctly the engine builder said bearing damage on cylinder 1 and 4.

finally time to work on it. I had a crazy summer that I had to work every single day till now.

Engine being put together. Will update more soon :)

I know I haven't been keeping this thread updated. The truth is, there's so much going on in my life for the past year that I put the miata at a pretty low priority. However, there's going to be some new updates soon.

The car is currently up and running, and it's going through the break in process with the new motor right now.

I've been away for more than half a year but I just wanted to come update you guys with the miata. I still have the car and I have been driving it daily now for the past few months. I'm slowly cleaning things up after the swap.

Restored a momo indy steering wheel over the winter but didn't get to keep it on the car. I still prefer a softer leather wheel :)

This is probably one of my favorite upgrades on the car. Lotus elise seats with Ryokrob seat rails. Pre-probax isn't as comfortable as the probax one (I have sat in both for long distances) but the seat i got has lumbar support. Top upgrade as I always feel cramped inside a miata so this is a game changer.

Did a track day in July at the Ridge Motorsports Park. If you've followed my thread, I've been going to the same track at around 2013, but the motor died on me so it was parked for a bit (and rebuilt twice. story of my life.) I went back this and was hoping to beat my previous record, which shouldn't be a problem because I have more power now. However, a certain area of the track has been repaved so it runs a new configuration. Most cars are generally 1 second slower than their previous layout. I ran the same 2:04 flat on a really hot day so it's promising that I could get it down to the 2:01s. The VVT engine also requires dyno tune so i can get the most out of it. I was running at the same pace as a 01-05 vvt miata on the straight. I'm now running re71s instead of ra1

The car currently develops an oil leak from the front. I suspect it's from the front crank seal. I'm am crossing fingers hoping that it's not the BE pump as they previously sent me a size that the front crank pulley wouldn't even go on. Otherwise I believe my engine builder didn't install it properly. It was fine for the first 2000 miles of breaking in but starting to leak when I drove the car down to the track track on a hot day. Now it was leaks whenever i park. Otherwise the car is pretty reliable.

I hope that sums up what happened in the past few months. Not a lot but I'm glad I get to drive the car again.

Unfortunately it may be the Boundary oil seal; they have been reports of them using cheap Chinese seals for some reason, which is weird to me. In any case, it should be a straightforward job replacing the seal, although a bit tedious as it requires the timing belt to be removed. I would monitor it and go from there.

thanks for the advice. I'm going to do one more track day before replacing the seal. I have the supermiata harmonic pulley. I just hope it's not too difficult to remove without the specialty tool from 949racing

Wow. Your Te37vs look so good on there!

Glad you're back to enjoying your roadster. What are you doing about seat belt harness for the track day and those seats?

I still have my spg that i swap over. I could've do the harness mod on the seats but i would rather keep them looking the way it is right now.

Hi guys!

It's been a year since I've updated this post. I just wanted to say that the car is still with me. I've been thinking to sell it for the longest time to buy the car i've always wanted but this car has created so much sentimental value that it would be a tough sell. Plus I'm still buying new parts for the car as we speak!

Here are some photos of the car from earlier this summer. I've done only 1 track day and 1 autox event, and would love to do more but the work life has taken much of my summer.

front crank seal from the Boundary Engineering pump. Replaced it with oem mazda seal and it doesn't leak anymore.
