sorry im very late on this i barely decided to make a build thread now.

first things first I LOVE BLUE BLUE BLUEEEEE

I grew up racing since i was 5 my dad used to race clubs with his 72 rx3 I believe. Willow Springs, Button Willow, Laguna seca etc.

I kept my own budget at 3 grand.
Since I grew up around Mazdas I felt that a Miata would be the perfect match. Rx7s were unreliable, and as a first car it might not be the smartest choice.
E30s which was my first choice did not quite carry on, it was just a hype phase. I did finally settle with the Miata.

I came across this 1992 Mariner with a stunning 89500 miles.
MARINER BLUE miatas are pretty rare in LA craigslist in my opinion

Build started late October of 2011
The only flaws were the vert top, window was definitely shot and the front bumper previous owner told us someone backed into him.

so about 2 weeks later me and my dad were getting aggravated with the dumb vert top water seeped though easily.
My dad found a hardtop from a 99 nb nardi edition dark green was a salvaged car.

I first wanted to start off with necessities tires, top, engine oil, etc.

Since we got it, tires were shot so around the same month I got the hardtop I found a guy on craigslist.
Me and my dad were like might as well look into getting new rims since we didnt want to buy a first set of
new tires for the stock daisies and later on buy a new set of rims and buy another set of tires.

The guy on craigslist was selling a set of Rota RB 15x7 offset 35.
Dad knocked it down to 250 if I remember correctly so about 530 with tires mounted.

Mazda was served with a class action lawsuit back in the late 1990s because the airbags on the NA6 cars would not deploy in accidents. I got a check cut for both of my Miatas. I also crashed one of my Miatas on the hwy doing 70mph, slammed into the concrete barrier wall. I was wearing my seatbelt, not a scratch on me, but the poor car took a LOT of damage. So if you want to do some research on the internet you will find that the airbags DONT work, so just take that crap out, just MAKE SURE you cut out the ripstop in the seat belt though!!! I used the money Mazda sent me back then for a Mazdaspeed steering wheel from Japan, hahhaa

As long as the steering wheel still works you can probably keep it for a while, I think you might start looking for a new Aluminum radiator as the stock plastic ones from Mazda always crack and fail. That would be my next upgrade on a 20 year old Miata, make it more reliable first and then do the fun stuff.

Here is a list of radiators to choose from that will fit your car. Go to a local Miata meet and ask the guys what they are using, get some actual user feedback, or even create a new thread on this forum and ask folks what they are using.

Nice looking car and looking forward to watching more of your progress! Your comment on Miata rarity in LA threw me off though. Whenever I have searched for Miatas in the past its always seemed as if 90% of them were in California and Florida. Sounds really odd to hear someone say theyre rare in LA,in my experience there are boatloads of them out that way.

I sold it to a guy that completed a full top notch paint job himself and the car ended up looking fantastic. HE sent me this pic when it was completed. I was damn near close to offering to buy it back!

You need to shave the inside to get that dimple out I think. It looks to me like your fender got pulled. If you use a real roller you could get that rolled back in pretty easily.

take the springs off of your shocks, then reassemble the suspension. Put the suspension to full compression and youll see where/if youre rubbing. then you can set your bump to stop right before that. I have 15x8 +20 with 205's with a MILD roll, and I dont rub, even on the track.

For sure. I didn't even get a car until I was 18 and into my senior year and had no budget to speak of for modding.
I wish I would have been able to get one of these cars back then, but NA Miatas were still basically considered a new-ish car back in 2000.

i dont get why i would get a ticket for that since most cars now dont even have side markers

AntiochOG

That's because they are integrated into the headlight. You are required to have an amber reflector on the side of your vehicle in front and a red reflector on the side in the back.

...I think you might start looking for a new Aluminum radiator as the stock plastic ones from Mazda always crack and fail. That would be my next upgrade on a 20 year old Miata, make it more reliable first and then do the fun stuff.

Here is a list of radiators to choose from that will fit your car...

I was also going to recommend getting a new rad soon, your's is quite brown! I would put that at the top of the list unless there is something else that we don't know about that the car desperately needs.

car is running strong but im sure that radiator is done soon

so annoyed with the airbag light so I bought some 3 ohm resistors wired it up and it still blinks... Now I removed the resistors and plugged the two airbag connectors directly to each other and the light disappeared. Am i doing it right I feel like something will short long term. According to some forums 90-93 you can just connect these two wires directly. My guess is because earlier models ran only 1 airbag.

What did you have to do to make the short throw work?

I had to shave the pin that came with the spacer which was only a alan bolt. Its the pin that goes on the notch of the shifter and also the bushing I had to shave it so it doesn't touch the pin on the spacer. I wish I took pictures.

i was lucky enough to own a lathe so I can grind down the alan head with ease to fit the notch.

Because of the short throw install a whining noise in the trans occurs in high rpms, but its normal hence the harder bushings.

I love you, and your car, but an R lip would have been a better choice. You have a good, classic vibe going on. The GV lip is very aggressive. Still looks good, no doubt.

And I fucking LOVE your wheels in black

Wow. This is a really awesome build especially considering you're still in high school.
You're leaps and bounds ahead of me as far as mods go.
Keep up the good work!
