I bought this car with the intentions of having a fun, clean and reliable daily driver. So far so good! Here's a quick little summary of what the car has gone thru so far.

Day of purchase.. 2000 LS stock aside from the 35% tint, grille, and Monsterflow CAI.
http://i45.tinypic.com/205pqmh.jpg

The first thing I got was a roll bar to make the car a bit safer. I also wanted a seat the held me in place better than the stock LS seats, so I picked up a pair of Corbeau Forzas.
http://i50.tinypic.com/wvtsht.jpg

Next mod was an Enthuza XR lightweight muffler paired with the RB mid pipe.
http://i46.tinypic.com/10p3kvm.jpg

I love the way it sounds!

Unfortunately, someone hit me while leaving a parking lot... the damage was quickly repaired and the next mod on the list was some Riceland coil overs.

Once the weather cleared, I swapped out the old top for a new black one.

I had a small chip turn into a giant crack on the windshield, so that was replaced as well.
http://i38.tinypic.com/2qtvjia.jpg

Then I went crazy and stripped the interior :roll eyes:

I've always liked Wats on Miatas, but I can't justify paying shipping to import a set just yet so I bought some XXR 513's in 15x7 et.15

Picked up a hardtop from another local Miata owner :) and ditched the soft top altogether.

The following day Chris, Rich and I drove to Baltimore for Import Alliance.

Shortly after moving down to South Carolina I decided to put some of the interior back in, because I'm heading a slightly different direction with the car now.

Nice build. I think the red carpet would only work if it went along with more red. If it was me, I would go with the red carpet, then dye the door panels and lower dash red, with a black center console.

morr
01-30-2012, 04:28 PM
George, I'm thinking black as well. It would be more subtle and work well with the steering wheel I plan on getting.

Caoboy, haha yep! I actually had tan carpet again for a couple weeks before this.

That's a good point. The only downside is that the center console separates at the shifter and the only way to remove the tan dash is by taking out the ENTIRE dash.

I had to pull up a picture of a tan 2000 dash to understand what you meant about the center console. It looks like you will need to change the door panels, lower dash, and center console together. Normally I would say that the red console would look odd, but the black seats should help break it up.

Removing a dash is not that bad once you decide to do it. With the help from a friend, I swapped the dash and carpet in my '93LE AND installed a rollbar all in one weekend.

Yeah I plan on having black seats even if I change them out. The only problem with removing the dash is that my car is my DD (and only car) so I gotta make sure I have the downtime to do it

You know, you could always go 93le dash and door cards as well.......

I was in the process of swapping NA cards in when my 99 got wrecked. The crash pads line up perfectly with the trim on the dash.

ChrisJuliano
01-31-2012, 06:01 PM
I love it! I would custom make some NA style door cards with cross stitched red leather, like a boss. I hate you for having such an awesome color scheme silver (and gunmetal) on red interior is absolutely PERFECT, so classy.

morr
01-31-2012, 06:47 PM
Skinny, I was originally gonna do an entire 93LE swap but my plans changed a bit. I might do the LE dash, but I'm thinking of doing custom door cards from an NA using the red/black theme.

Chris, you pretty much read my mind! Thanks, I've always loved silver cars with red interiors. It's pretty exciting seeing my plans come together :)

I plan on getting the same wheel Pacman99 has in his NB... Nardi Corn 350mm. I'm still debating whether I want black spokes or silver.

I usually have an opinion to give when it comes to options, but in all honesty your car would be sexy either black or silver (both go very well).

morr
01-31-2012, 08:28 PM
Skinny, where would you say your hands rested with that setup in comparison to the stock wheel? Further from the signal/wipers?

Chris, I am kinda leaning towards black just because I have that chrome mooneyes shift knob and that thing got smudged up pretty quick haha.

If you place your palms on the wheel and extend your fingers flat youll just touch the stalks for the wipers and indicators, I always sat one click from all the way back. If you thrashed your car around on a spirited drive you wouldnt have to worry about accidentaly turn the wipers on etc

Made a little progress on my interior today. I traded seats with Rich (blu92). The plan is to have them reupholstered to look like the LE seats. The carpet's not installed completely in this pic, because I'll be taking it out soon enough for the interior makeover. Luckily, the Forzas fit his car fine with the NB Corbeau rails. His NA seats fit fine in my car as well once I swapped the original sliders from my stock NB seats.

So Rich (blu92) helped (and by helped I mean did all the work) me clean the throttle body/egr to try and rid my car of the CEL. He pulled both codes (the second of which I wasn't aware of) and it said the bank1 O2 was bad. So I'm thinking "great! more sh*t to fix!" Anyways, he got to work on the manifold for now. It was a pretty gruesome sight...

And the final result...

So, I made it about 10 miles before the CEL came back on. I haven't checked the code yet, but I'm hoping it's just the O2 sensor again. Either way, we're gonna probably replace that and do the vacuum line reroute mentioned here. (http://www.miata.net/garage/egr0902.html)

Shortly after finishing up my car Chris showed up and we took a look at his rear brakes. Long story short, we're gonna be having another "tech day" and be doing his brakes and mine haha. In the mean time here are a few pictures...

Nice build so far man. I've seen your car around on cr.net and in the cr calendar but I've never seen a build thread. Very tasteful mods. Did you ever get that deep corn? I'm on the fence between the 350 and the 330. Also how do you like the vent Windows? I've been looking at them for a while but I'm not sure .about them.

Thanks man! Didn't get the wheel yet. I've been taking care of preventive maintenance stuff lately. I love the new vent window. It's like having the AC on just a bit, but isn't overwhelming driving around town.

My next "fun" mod will probably be seats, because I can't stand sliding around in my NA seat. I miss feeling the seat hug me going around turns :cry2:

Seat shopping is tough. After sitting in ChrisJuliano's Bride rep, I think that's what I'm gonna get. It was snug, but it was super comfy and stable. I'd just be too nervous to spend all that money on legit ones and have em stolen.

Well, it looks like any progress is on hold for the time being. I listed the car for sale on Craigslist and have had a few people show interest. Been talking to a guy in Ohio that's very interested and wants to come take a look at it soon. No need to worry about me leaving the roadster scene... I plan to get an NA whenever I finally sell my NB :) I remember when I test drove a few before buying my NB that they just felt like they had so much more character. I know I'll miss my NB since it's my first Miata, but I'm ready to get back into an NA.

I'm leaning towards the red one, because it's the closest to a legit asking price. The white one is priced rather high, but it does appear to be in great shape. The black one seems alright, but I'm concerned about the slight gap between the hood and the passenger side fender.

Jim, that'd be awesome if you could keep an eye out for me! My first choices in color are BRG or Black (93le) but I'm open to anything. Price range is $5,000 tops. I'm hoping to have money to get a roll bar as soon as I get the car... assuming it doesn't already have one. As far as mileage, I'll go up to 130k miles tops unless the car is in really great shape. I'd prefer as close to stock as possible, but mods don't bother me too much.

Yea too bad.. The car is just sitting there in the garage while I'm in school and don't have any money for mods or insurance on it; would be cool to see it go to someone that would start modding it sooner.. Or it'll be my incentive to get a decent job after University so I can start work on it.

Yea too bad.. The car is just sitting there in the garage while I'm in school and don't have any money for mods or insurance on it; would be cool to see it go to someone that would start modding it sooner.. Or it'll be my incentive to get a decent job after University so I can start work on it.

Hopefully you find something decent though, even though I do like what you've done with the NB so far.

Dang :( Thanks man!

More realistically, here's this one with 84,000miles for $3900.. Not sure if you want red or not but this seems like a decent one.

Importing a car into Canada is actually really easy, I've done 2 cars so far and haven't had any issues. The part I'm not sure about is importing a car into the states after it's been exported once already. I'll let you know what I find out about that.

oooo, you're in luck, taken from here:
http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/trade/basic_trade/importing_car.xml

Re-Importing A Previously Exported Vehicle
A vehicle taken from the United States for non-commercial, private use may be returned duty free by proving to U.S. Customs that it was previously owned and registered in the United States. This proof may be a state-issued registration card for the automobile or a bill of sale for the car from a U.S. dealer. Repairs or accessories acquired abroad for your vehicle must be declared on your return and may be subject to duty.

So you can re-import the car duty free. I have all the paperwork from when it was in California so you have all the proof you need. Let me know if you're interested and we can definitely talk. I'm not sure if I'd be able to do a trade since insurance on 2 cars is a bit much (unless I sold my NB too), but I don't mind holding onto the car for a bit if you'd like to buy it after selling your NB, like I said, it's just sitting in my brother's garage not going anywhere.

Well, I've had a few people show interest in my car. But the most serious buyer backed out, because he needed to sell a car to justify picking up mine. I've been trying to not look at NA's too much until my car is gone, cuz I just keep getting bummed when they sell haha. Yeah that BRG was gone in a few days... not surprised though it was a pretty good deal.

I did talk to a random motorcycle rider yesterday for a bit about my car. He said he was looking for a car to track, took my number down, etc. So we'll see if he shows any interest.

As far as updates though, I ordered some HPS pads from Boss Performance and they should be here in the next few days.

So, my fuel pump decided to die at a meet the other night. Thanks to blu92 we were able to get it started and back to my house. It was definitely the most convenient time it could have happened though since we were only about 15 minutes from my place.

I had another local guy show interest in buying my car, but unless he buys it I'm gonna put a hold on selling it and take care of some little maintenance stuff. I'd hate to turn over the car to a new owner and have stuff go wrong for them right after buying it.

Quite the random turn of events today. I got an offer to trade for a Black 95 with 81k miles, Rotas, and Racelands (only 2k miles on them). The owner is in Rhode Island, so we're gonna meet halfway, and assuming all is well, we'll do the swap plus a bit of cash. Here's what it looks like...

In regards to the fuel pump issue, I picked up a new one tonight. Gonna pick up blank rotors, fuel filter, and fuel strainer tomorrow. My pads from Boss Performance should be here in the next few days.

I wouldn't be worried about [power windows, in fact, I would prefer them. I think power or not, they can all bind, and need adjustment/lubrication. Good job finding a trade. Make sure you document your trip and swap.

Well, today was (super frustrating) but somewhat productive. I'm just relieved to have finally done something since I've had this stuff for a couple weeks now. It took me about an hour to get just the driver's front pads and rotor off. That sh*t did not wanna budge thanks to PA winters and rust! Here's the old stuff vs. the new: NAPA blanks w/Hawk HPS (courtesy of BOSS Performance).

Miiiight need to get more PB Blaster tomorrow though... I'm just stoked to finally be doing this stuff on my own (with some help from Rich on the phone haha). I was always too afraid to work on my own car (being that it's my only car) but I'm tired of paying people for simple jobs.

edit: The coolest thing that actually seemed to help the most was a tip I read on M.net. Someone mentioned that the "T-screw" that holds the scissor jack in place can be screwed into the rotor and then used to pull it off the hub.

Nice job Morr! Also...(it may be to late now) before you reinstall your discs, rub a small amount of anti seize on the back of the inside of the rotor, so it doesn't get stuck next time.

It's been a little while since I updated this. Firstly, the CEL came back on after fixing the EGR. But as I was hoping it's just for the O2 sensor. I'm not worried about that, because I have a few replacement sensors to try. We finally got around to getting the rear pads and rotors on. I had also purchased new (to me) calipers. After a ton of sweat and cussin' the rear pads, rotors, and one new (to me) caliper are on. Pretty much everything on the driver's side was f*cked. Took like an hour and a half just for that corner. The pads themselves had fallen apart...
http://i46.tinypic.com/2zdwtns.jpg

The caliper was seized up because when I had a shop do my brakes last year they clearly didn't know about how to reset the ebrake and everything. So we got it set correctly and got the new caliper, pads and rotor on the driver's rear. The passenger side caliper was fine.
http://i49.tinypic.com/w2xbr.jpg

And we tested Rich's hitch for MATG. Less than a month, I can't f*cking wait!

Thanks! Yeah I have. I actually bought some of the red spray, but just never got around to it. Plus PA has a law that at least one of your reverse lights needs to be white so I'm trying to figure out a way around that... I was thinking maybe tape a few thin lines horizontally on the reverse lights and just spray over them. So then when I do back up the light will still appear white, but any other time they'd thin enough that you don't notice them.

I am still looking for a drivers seat. Right now I have removed the cushion from the bottom and put a softer seat cushion that sits me lower and just covered it in black fabric.

Ah gotcha. Yeah I was going to go with Status seats in red until I saw these pop up.

Yeah I was planning to get new coils or a shock and spring combo, but I wouldn't install them til spring anyway.

Still waiting on my center console, door sills, and seats. I'm just stoked to see my interior finally coming together. I'll probably paint the lower dash black soon when we have another day of nice weather.

My center console and door sills arrived a couple weeks ago along with my seats :)

Here's a crappy instagram teaser shot of the seats. I just ordered my Flipside Custom brackets, so I'm gonna wait until everything is here to post pics of the entire interior.

The next major thing do aside from maintenance items is paint the lower dash black, but I'll have to wait for a warm day to do that.

Slightly relevant post. Here's a pic I took this morning of my OEM replacement radiator. This happened a little over a year after it was put in.

Ouch! That sucks. Going OEM again or are you going aluminum?

morr
02-16-2013, 10:40 PM
Well, I was thinking maybe OEM from a vendor with a good warranty or just spending the extra money and getting a good aluminum one. For others' sake, I'm hoping I just happened to get a "bad one out of the batch". I'm beyond "budget building" at this point and don't mind spending money on quality performance parts, but I was hoping to just get another OEM unit and do my timing belt/water pump stuff all at once.

I'll probably do some more research on aluminum rads and go from there. I'm not looking for top of the line as this is just my DD with the occasional spirited drives, but if I have to spend a bit more to assure that I won't need to worry about it for a long time it'll be worth it.

02-16-2013, 11:07 PM
Yeah if mine starts to go, I will do an aluminum one and just get it over with. Something about plastic and heat doesn't sit too well with me.

morr
02-16-2013, 11:23 PM
Yeah it's one of those things that I figured I'd like to have a higher quality part, but since I don't track my car yet I figured I'd be fine with an OEM piece. But I guess I'd rather have something that's capable of handling more than what I'd put it thru.

edit: My long-term goal is to pick up an NA to turn into a retro inspired/comfortable DD and have my NB as more of a classy track car if that makes sense  I want to keep the full interior (LE carpet, lotus seats, etc) but focus more on having it run efficiently and be comfortable for hours of seat time.

Speaking of which, I did recently notice an M-Edition for sale at a private lot on my way to work

Plastic endtanks=no bueno. I kept on bursting OEM radiators at the track until I decided to just upgrade to aluminum if I ever break one.

morr
02-22-2013, 09:56 PM
Yeah, I'm probably gonna be ordering an aluminum one just to be safe. I'll also most likely hit you up for a quick release or some other goodies once I get my tax return :winky:

Sounds great, just let me know!

It's not the end of the world to get one with plastic end tanks, but with repeated heat cycles they WILL rupture over time. It just depends on how hot you get it up to on a regular basis. Most of my Miata's I drive hard pretty regularly so plastic end tanks have never survived long. For an M.netter type daily who never sees AX or the track though, it would be more than fine. I'd much rather just get an aluminum one and forget about it.

Will do! Well the sad thing is, I didn't really push the car until MATG and it was overheating well before that. Surprisingly, it only overheated maybe three times on the Dragon... because I was in 2nd or 3rd gear near redline for so long. Driving home was a different story. I couldn't go above 45mph without it overheating. That was with the heat blasting on '4' the entire time. So a 9 hour drive turned into a 12 hour drive, and boy was it miserable. I was sunburned too, so I couldn't even hang my arm out the window for some relief

At this point, aluminum is overkill for the type of driving I do (mainly DD with the occasional spirited drive) but I'd rather have something that's more than capable of handling what I do and not have to worry about it with another OEM replacement. I figure worse case scenario I'll have a good warranty if the rad were to crap out on me.

So I'm pretty f*cking annoyed right now. I ordered my Lotus brackets thru Flipside Customs on February 12th. Hadn't heard anything by February 21st, so I emailed Rob. He said they were done and should go out that weekend. I emailed again on March 2nd asking for an update. No answer, tried calling, left a voicemail, etc. March 6th, Rob finally responds saying they should ship tomorrow. He assured me that they would come with all the mounting hardware needed. On March 14th they finally arrived. I did not receive all the mounting hardware. I'm moving to South Carolina on Saturday and have no way to mount my seats. I emailed them telling them I'm missing parts, but honestly don't expect to get an answer for a few days. I don't even have enough to at least mount the driver's seat.

I'm just going to go to the hardware store tomorrow and try to get what I need. I'm so f*cking annoyed with these people. Needless to say, I will never do business with them again and suggest others avoid them.

Nah, I'll be passing thru closer to Charlotte (got a buddy that lives there). I'm sure I'll visit him from time to time, so I'd be down to meet up then. Yeah the move should be for good. ^Absolutely! Minor update: Ventured to ACE Hardware today to get some bits and pieces since Flipside Customs dicked me over, again. I have to mess with the fitment, but here's how it's looking.

One more with the door panels/console. I need to do some minor tweeking to the panels too, because the handle is off and the BOSE speakers interfere with it sitting flush. Can't tell from this angle tho! Haha. You can see where the handle is slightly off...

Redundant interior update: I got the passenger seat in. The brackets themselves have some fitment issues. Idk if the bottoms of the Lotus seats are different year to year, but my sliders force certain parts outward making it difficult to align the holes to where the bolts go to hold the seat to the floor. Also, you have to jam the handle for the slider up and down for it to slide and then lock again. The reason being that the shape of the seat comes in contact with the slider mechanism itself. Oh well, it still works.

I just needed to get everything "in" the car before I head down South again tomorrow. Once I get there, I have quite a few things to do...

-Radiator
-Attempt to raise front end/get alignment
-Tires
-Fuel Filter
-Plugs/wires
-Remove remaining tan carpet under the dash
-Paint lower dash/window switch black
-Remove BOSE speakers/adjust door panels

Woops, sorry treeafodo thought I replied. The seat doesn't hug my hips, but I was more concerned with the shoulder bracing - which is perfect IMO. I was also worried I'd slide a bit on the leather, but the seat holds me enough that I don't move around. Keep in mind I'm a smaller guy... 5'8" 140lbs.

Weren't we looking at getting the konig spooled in the same color? I'm still undecided on wheels, but I like the price, weight, size, and look of the spooled. And do you plan to get a rollbar?

Thanks! Yeah they're not nearly as bad as my Corbeau Forzas were. I just got down to South Carolina (drove straight thru) and they were comfy the whole way. My only real complaint was that the inflatable lumbar support slowly deflated. Idk if mine could just use tightening or maybe they just aren't meant to hold air for 12 hr seat time

But for the lack of actual "padding," I found them great, because the general shape allowed you to sit however you wanted (straight up, slouching, etc) and still be comfortable.

Nice man! I haven't read about these tires. I have my eye on the Azenis after I wear these out but I am open to others.

I read several reviews online that sounded pretty good. A lot of them mention that the tires aren't great in the rain (which my buddy told me about - and I expected based on the tread design). The main selling point was seeing how well they worked for ChrisJuliano when we were at MATG last year.

Good tires, I had them on my Mazdaspeed, you'll like them :)

I sure hope so! I'm sure they'll be a million times better than my Kumho AST's that are worn to sh*t. I'll give them credit though, they've lasted a long time. I just wanted something a bit stickier :fab:
