Always been too shy to do a build thread because my car doesn't go through significant changes regularly, I have meagre if even existent technical ability and my direction with the car has been casual and generic at best, but PhatMiata said it'd be peachy, so why not? Any excuse for me to photowhore my car that I lubz so muuucchh. :3:

So first, a little about how I came to have the Miata.

<--check them coords under my location? That's the longylatty for Guam. In a few words, Guam's like a tiny, tiny Hawaii with more stray dogs and ricers.

I moved here from Texas about 3 years ago and absolutely had to have a convertible. Coming from a Celica I also wanted to try out RWD. Oddly enough, a Miata was not on my shopping list. In fact, I actually spent months looking for a 240 vert, RX-7 cabrio, MR2 and nothing else. Guam being in no supply of any of them, made me change my plan and decide I wanted something with an A/C instead of an open roof.

So I went to a Toyota Dealership in search of an IS300. Of course that didn't pan out either, but I did spy something else in the corner...

http://img521.imageshack.us/img521/9105/56106935.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/521/56106935.jpg/)

Senator Judie Guthertz apparently came in a couple days before and traded in (one of) her Miatas towards a Lexus. 5Spd Base model + cheap paintjob + hard top for 7k. Might not be the deal of the century, but holy crap, I found the RWD convertible I've been searching for!

http://img844.imageshack.us/img844/8782/32556133.jpg

One drive and I fell in love with the car. To this day, I look at my NB and think, "Why don't they make cars like this anymore?" I was so stricken with the Miata I had to name her. So I think, "she's still gorgeous even after getting along in her age, she's been used by politicians, and I love getting inside her and going for a ride..." I had to name her after a porn star. Marina Matsushima: google if you're kinky and the kids are in bed.

http://img827.imageshack.us/img827/1985/mmgaldee060102.jpg

Anyway, Marina would be my daily driver and happy funtime car all in one. Not that unique of a decision for most young men, I guess. But anyway, I did everything with this car, I even tried my hand at legitimate, legally sanctioned drag racing.

http://img28.imageshack.us/img28/2270/d100205.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/28/d100205.jpg/)

It didn't really pan out.

http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/2270/d100205.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/3/d100205.jpg/)

I also tried auto-crossing. I spent most of my time getting lost and wearing out my brakes.

http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/6016/26988126032743309013768.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/9/26988126032743309013768.jpg/)

Yeah, so uhhh, motorsports wasn't really working out for me and Marina. In fact the only thing I could do competently was parking. Hard parking. (okay, that was corny and I apologize)

Anyway, I'm also a clubroadster member, so you know what got bought. It'd be more funny if it wasn't so sad.

http://img841.imageshack.us/img841/2937/22073239.jpg

I ran the wheels with unrolled fenders, 205/50's and stock ride height. One canyon carving trip gave me a whole bunch of this:

http://img580.imageshack.us/img580/7545/10554650.jpg

My car also looked kinda funny from certain angles.

http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/1483/49831791.jpg
http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/1299/67223397.jpg

But whateva', I do wuh I want. So I found a fender roller and a person almost as dumb as I am and we got to work on ruining the resale value and mutilating the car. This is the only thing I truly regret doing to my car lol. I admit it and consider it an important lesson along a hopefully far reaching path of automotive enthusiasm. Stay in school kids, do drugs sparingly.

http://img29.imageshack.us/img29/6523/d101211.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/29/d101211.jpg/)

The important part was that I could drive the miata properly again and continue our happy journey together through my stay on Guam.

http://img195.imageshack.us/img195/7103/d20110101.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/195/d20110101.jpg/)

However, mobility is overrated and I absolutely HAD to do something about how convenient my ride height was. These things popped up on the scene and well, I wasn't gonna get ricelands, so I was willing to guinea pig.

http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/3610/photo0006xv.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/59/photo0006xv.jpg/)

I think I was the first NB of any repute to ride on these judging by how many dorky questions I got in my pm box for months on CR.net.

http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/9219/d20110112.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/215/d20110112.jpg/)

Especially since I don't really participate in race events anymore. T'was the dawning of the age of herd porking after all.

http://img833.imageshack.us/img833/9219/d20110112.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/833/d20110112.jpg/)

But it was cool. Since everyone on Guam was still in the style of putting fart cans and park benches on Hondas, Marina broke more necks than she really ought to.

http://img444.imageshack.us/img444/5816/ryanx.jpg (http://img444.imageshack.us/img444/5816/ryanx.jpg)

The Guam ambassador to StanceNation even offered to shoot my car; Helen Keller fenders, XXRs and all. Nowhere being website worthy, but I appreciated the gesture.

When I first bought the car, the radiator popped after a month. I let some scumbag island shop fix it and they put in one from an automatic NB2 that was in a front end collision. It took a while to start leaking, but it eventually did. This time a friend and I decided to handle that shiz on our own. I shipped over a Mishimoto aluminium radiator and dropped it in during an odd weekend.
http://img856.imageshack.us/img856/8773/photo0055z.jpg

By drop it in, I mean hammer and ziptie the a/c core and chop up the stock fan shroud. Oh Mishimoto, you are a ballsy bunch of bastards for calling this "OEM Fitment".
http://img600.imageshack.us/img600/2856/photo0059o.jpg

It's okay though, it got in eventually and served me well since (until, as I believe StorminNorman predicted, the Mishi Radiator cap suicided).
http://img528.imageshack.us/img528/747/photo0058t.jpg

Leaky radiators are not the worst thing to have happened to my car though. Because of the amount of rainfall we receive on Guam, and the amount of incompetence found within the people maintaining Guam's roads, the newer roads on island have manhole covers paved every 15 feet and said manhole covers jut up an average of about 3 inches from the ground.

Well.. one night I didn't see one of these manhole covers...
http://img52.imageshack.us/img52/3231/photo0026lr110406.jpg

Snagged a PPF bolt on one of the little bastards and experienced a world of hurt. Third member was shattered and an arm broke off my diff housing. Good news was the frame was still straight. God knows how.
http://img269.imageshack.us/img269/4305/photo0027lr110406.jpg
http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/7748/photo0028lr110406.jpg

This is Guam though, so, uhhh, finding another 1.8 rear end on island? Not gonna happen. I ended up buying the entire 1.6 drivetrain out of my friend's dad's NA for 400 dollars. OUCHOUCHOUCHOUCH He ripped me off because he wanted to teach me a lesson about driving at a dysfunctionally low ride height.
http://img710.imageshack.us/img710/7022/d20110126.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/710/d20110126.jpg/)

We did the work with hand tools throughout the night and by morning my car was back in my hands, handicapped, but running as usual. So yeah, lesson learned about rideheight?

LOL.

http://img641.imageshack.us/img641/7113/d110609.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/641/d110609.jpg/)
http://img404.imageshack.us/img404/4633/d110603.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/404/d110603.jpg/)

A month later I swapped my 205/50's for some 195/45's and wound the coils downdowndown. Some might say I'm a masochist. Marina might say I'm a sadist.
http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/549/d110806.jpg
http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/549/d110806.jpg

I have to drop a direct quote of my friend's dad. "This kid breaks his rear end on a manhole cover and because his IQ is almost as low as his car, he goes and lowers the damn thing even more!" I blame the Acrophobia personally. I sleep better at night by reminding everyone that there are much, much lower Miatas. I especially enjoy telling my bodykitted Silviabros that.
http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/4412/d111017x.jpg

Well... after what happened next I ended up avoiding my buddy's pop for a good while. I think most would have called it inevitable, but I say I was jinxed! Wait for it...
http://img822.imageshack.us/img822/4945/d111025.jpg
http://img195.imageshack.us/img195/8696/37507027268716277028010.jpg

Ever get laughed at by a 49 year old man in short shorts walking a chihuahua on a leash? Yeah, that was the scene from the first time I saw my friend's dad after I cracked my oil pan. His catch phrase since has been either "told ya!" or "give ya $50 for your NB!"

Was a tough few months with the Miata down and waiting for the dealership to bring me a new oil pan (really shoulda checked Autozone since they apparently ship to Guam). I ended up buying a freaking sweet Chevy and really shitty Honda in the meantime. Picture very related.
http://img641.imageshack.us/img641/5521/photo00332.jpg

But there's no car like a roadster. And it was a day of much rejoicing when I finally got Marina back.

Sorta.

While she was at the dealership, they left her out back in the sun with no tarp and the garbage guy backed into her. Hell was raised.
http://img713.imageshack.us/img713/3088/d120106a.jpg

The parts that weren't smashed were burnt up by the sun to the point that the paint cracked and looked like it fell into a tornado of sandpaper. That mixed with her new raised ride height.. Marina had seen better days
http://img41.imageshack.us/img41/6974/d120122.jpg

But you know, I bought the Miata for how it drove and, well, I was just happy to be back behind the wheel of it. I decided to focus less on riding dirty and build my car like a normal person.

The first thing I did was tackled the dealership's failure to reassemble my car properly. The retards neglected to bolt the header back together and I was left with a raspy, poppy exhaust noise paired with fumes galore.
http://img856.imageshack.us/img856/7361/d120217.jpg

Instead of, you know, just fixing it, I decided to buy some ricey "ceramic" header from OBX off fleabay.
http://img843.imageshack.us/img843/3710/42770733208278350652410.jpg

Nice right? No. This thing's a piece of shit. Mishimoto needs to step up their game because OBX is the new king of bad item fitment. There was just so much wrong and my friends and I had to waste so much time and effort just to get it in properly.
http://img838.imageshack.us/img838/1305/42526033208322350648010.jpg

On the bright side, I got this GarageStar radiator cooling panel and as if it were mercy from the car gods, it fit perfectly and looked beautiful every second of the way.
http://img338.imageshack.us/img338/245/d120325.jpg

At some point my friend decided to outfit his Civic with a massive audio system and he accidentally ordered two head units. He gave me one for a song and I swapped out my old, basic Clarion for it.
http://img585.imageshack.us/img585/3084/d120411.jpg

Things were going great for a minute. Kinda weird having my Miata on guam and nothing bad happe-

Teenage girl with a cellphone in an SUV on a rainy day going down hill in traffic.
http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/5559/d120301.jpg

Mangled my rear bumper and scratched up my front end as she pushed my car into the Civic in front of me. At this point I had only gotten it out of the shop from the garbage truck issue for all of two months. I could have choked the poor girl right on the spot.

But.. I guess it was kind of a blessing in disguise as the body shop I chose to have work done on it were willing to do a full respray for pennies more than what her insurance gave me. They did a C+ job overall I'd say, but it looks fine from afar, and certainly better than what the sun had it looking like from the dealership.

http://www.super-magic.com/humansirkme/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/IMG_6015_lrd_120425-2.jpg

Bes part though? They cleaned up the fenders.
http://img109.imageshack.us/img109/1440/d120429.jpg

Yeah, I couldn't help winding it down so I could tuck a teensy bit of rubber. But.. this time I'm not entirely unprepared.
http://img696.imageshack.us/img696/1440/d120429.jpg

BLAOOWW. Skidplate. StudioxBoldmove. Piece is solid, install is easy and no shady washers for engine mounts necessary. It does have some drawbacks. Well, one BIG drawback.
http://img404.imageshack.us/img404/1440/d120429.jpg

You can't be slammed on this skidplate. Well, I guess you can, but it'd be more stupid than usual. It's weird to throw sparks when I'm not even close to being as low as I used to be.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wvCLvOtto2k

The only way it can clear your subframe and pan is by hanging extra low. This plate is probably better suited for cars that see a functional height and are on track duty. Oh well, I already bashed this thing to the point where the only way I can get it off is to cut if off, so I'll have to live with it.
http://img542.imageshack.us/img542/5071/d120526.jpg

If you were paying attention to that video you'll notice something weird about my alignment. I may not be slammed, but I'm still dumblow and a car key away from the ground, yet I have no rear camber.
http://img812.imageshack.us/img812/141/d120412.jpg

Oooh, ahhh, drift alignment with an open diff. Wow. lol Looking at trying to snag a pair of adjustable FUCAs or modifying a stock set of A-arms; I'll see how that goes in the coming weeks.

As for right now, Current status is inop. My CAS and/or MAF went out and now the car won't start. Should be solving that problem by next week and hopefully I'll be able to organize a good photoshoot this month.

What a great story. And I think your fenders gave her character, not those fancy fixed ones. I'm sure the guys at the shop were thinking, "wtf! These kids and their race cars".

Aww naw, I never have any logical reasoning behind the names of my cars (with the exception being the VagWagon, my 89 Civic WagoVan, named from a friend's inability to pronounce Wagovan)

What a great story. And I think your fenders gave her character, not those fancy fixed ones. I'm sure the guys at the shop were thinking, "wtf! These kids and their race cars".
LolZ, if it's any concession, it seems like I've already re-ruined my fancy, fixed fenders!

http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/426/d120624.jpg

Owchowchowchowchowch. Yeah, maybe need a bit more camber. That or arch gap. Definitely need new tires now though.

But anyway, I got her starting again after what seemed like a forever of down time. My CAS was the culprit and after pulling it off, it looked worn, like it was sanded by something. How the hell? I also changed my suposedly bad MAF sensor (per a fancy code reading off of a buddy's laptop)

[imagine if you will, I didn't lose the cable for my phone and could post the picture I took of my bad CAS with it]

The new CAS got it starting, but the new MAF would cause the car to run all kinds of wrong once it got warmed up. I don't even know what the hell anymore. Thing is, with the old MAF, if the temps under the hood got hot enough the car would die out intermitently. Buddy suggested this was the result of heatsoaked coilpacks. Yeah, okay fine. On my list.

[imagine if you will, I didn't lose the cable for my phone and could post the picture I took of two MAF sensor assemblies side by side]

Of course, my car isn't content with just breaking one or two things at a time, so... riddle me this! What's stiff, black and can't stay errect without packaging tape?

...

What? Gross, no, ewww; I mean my passenger window. Stay classy, pervert.

http://img855.imageshack.us/img855/426/d120624.jpg

That just happened, like, so randomly. I haven't gotten the chance to take off a door panel and fix it more appropriately, but it looks like I'll be dumping more money into the Autozone volcano.

http://img406.imageshack.us/img406/426/d120624.jpg

So ere' she is as she sits as of this mawnin'. I plan on ringing up Guam's only pathetic Mazda dealership tomorrow to see if they maybe have the bits I need to get her running straight and maybe they won't suck me dry like the honda dealer tried. (lololol@800 dollar brake booster for my Civic). After that I'll finish up my S2k button install, get an overdue alignment, maybe get around to rebuilding the shifter with the kit I bought weeks ago, wash the car and give her a proper photoshoot with fires and explosions and tattooed skanks in bikinis.

Once we're done misbehaving, she's going up 2 and a half inches for some GoProXBackroadsDoriftuXPHUCKDALAW fun. I dunno, I saw the canibefrushastance websites doing that thisXthat stuff and wanted to try it.

Because these threads are no good to me without pictures, I was withholding on updating it until I either A) found my cellphone connection cable or b) bought a microsd card reader (figures my laptop has a slot for every other media than the only kinds I use, MicroSD and CompactFlash)

UNFORTUNATELY

This will also probably be the end of this thread. =( I'm getting the heeeeellll off this rock and sadly I can't swing the 3 grand it would cost to get my NB from here to Texas. It won't be my last Miata, you can count on that. I've owned more comfortable cars, cars that got better mileage, cars that weighed less, cars that were easier to drive, and cars that even hauled more ass, but Marina had that certain je ne sais quoi.

But enough sappy stuff, let's recap what I couldn't show over the past few weeks.

That MAF I changed ended up going back in the box as a waste of 90 dollars. Car just couldn't hold a warm idle with it no matter what, so what I ended up doing was just relocating my supposedly faulty MAF to near where the stock location was if I didnt have my ebay intake.

http://img812.imageshack.us/img812/8940/photo0102x.jpg

That combined with the new coilpacks solved errrrrything. Oh and much thanks to my fashion victim here. He's like, the personification of Miata.net and uses his old man powers to fix my car every other day (he's not really that much older than me or the other miata guys on island, we just like saying that he is because he's always scolding us for how we mess up our cars)

http://img195.imageshack.us/img195/3685/photo0121v.jpg

In any case, for the first time since I bought her, Marina was now capable of safely making long, hard drives (yeah, Guam is like 35 miles long, but it's 35 twisty curvey, uppy downy city miles). She looks happy to me. On a side note, here's a photo from a test day where I lapped the island. Had a burrito break at a gas station in the middle of nowhere. (pro tip: use your alum radiators to warm your burritos!)

http://img713.imageshack.us/img713/2820/photo0123a.jpg

After that, it was on to tackle the shifter and finally rebuild it for that fresh, clean feeling.

http://img707.imageshack.us/img707/4448/photo0096h.jpg

So yeah, uhh, this was all that was left of the stock shifter assembly: a ripped, cracked, torn destroyedificated mess.

http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/9506/photo0116xm.jpg

http://img194.imageshack.us/img194/6622/photo0117fu.jpg

So we threw the new pieces on and I also used a 5Xracing aluminium shifter collar for good measure down the line.

http://img832.imageshack.us/img832/6744/photo0118c.jpg

Of course I HAD to dip it in that purple syrup. Matches my dorky crown royal shift boot for all purple errytang. Fun fact about buddy boy, he works in the USAF's non destructive testing and I convince him to help me with my car because it's fly like an airplane. HAHAHAHA I FAHNNY JOKE GUY

http://img694.imageshack.us/img694/9830/photo0119k.jpg

But of course, Marina doesn't like behaving so she couldn't leave things well enough alone and had to break some shit. Guess what I can break when my under carriage is protected by a beefy steel skidplate. Did you say the skidplate itself? Bingo! I apparently had been bashing it in so hard it pretty much pancaked itself against my subframe and eventually the two front mounts straight folded over and broke off. I can't tell if it sounded as bad as that time I broke my diff housing and the driveshaft started polishing my exhaust, but the nose from dragging the plate at 50+ mph was a Paul Walker moment with no laptop to tell to shutup. (Pictured: A friend's ingenious method of getting his gigantic, freakin jack under my car. In case anyone freaks, no that's not from my car lol)

http://img62.imageshack.us/img62/3097/87240691.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/62/87240691.jpg/)

Forgot to take a picture of it, but even scarier than everything else was that there were impressions on the inside of the skidplate from the bottom of my oilpan (!!!!!!!!!!!!). Yeah, if you gotta throw a plate on your car and you slam, just go ahead and lift your motor and weld that bitch on, you can't even modslam with these bolt on pieces.

Well, not gonna risk another oilpan, so no more armor, no more lowness. Raised the car and threw some 18's on dat bitch.

http://img849.imageshack.us/img849/6994/d120717.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/849/d120717.jpg/)

Jokes, jokes. On the lighter side I decided to try on women's underwear, err, rather a friend of a friend got some aero for her Mazda3 and left it at my buddy's shop. We thought we'd have a laugh and see how well it mounted up (spoiler: not at all)

http://img707.imageshack.us/img707/203/photo0103p.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/707/photo0103p.jpg/)

For good measure, picture of the girl who owned the lipkit. I like my build threads spicy and irrelevant.

http://img214.imageshack.us/img214/2052/18851120386698297593970.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/214/18851120386698297593970.jpg/)

Anyway, since I was on a roll concerning fixing things, I figured it was time to tackle the ignition cylinder! I did this the same way I solve all my problems: by ignoring it completely and ejecting it from my life with an angry exchange of words and late night drunken phone calls to remind her she has my favorite sweater that I really don't give a shit about, but still want back. Ehhhh... With some wiring diagrams, my rent-an-electrician, and Revlimiter's blog bookmarked on an iPad, I tackled my S2000 button install.

http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/5167/d120729.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/268/d120729.jpg/)

My Rent-an-electrician kept reminding me that his daily rate is usually more than just a bag of Wendy's. I also reminded him that I normally don't roll fenders in Home Depot parking lots at 12 in the morning, but you know, it's whatever.

http://img803.imageshack.us/img803/5167/d120729.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/803/d120729.jpg/)

We had to wing it on the rocker switches for ACC-ON, but luckily my homey's girlfriend is not just a cutie, but a significantly more competent electrical engineer and a fountain of advice throughout the day. I asked if she had a sister, but she muttered something about dishonour and liberal arts degrees.

As you can see above, we also tackled another project. Since we felt like we were on fire with the spiffy as hell start button, we'd try to retrostyle my broken window switches. Instead of aluminum I used a bit of carbon fiber though (RICER NO RICING).

BUT ABANDON ALL HOPE, REVLIMITER FORSAKETH THE NBs lol. Kidding, but a couple blown fuses and zaps later we took care of it. I wish I could pin it out for any of you NB's wanting to go to heavy duty switches, but I pretty much let my friend do all the work while I posted weird messages on his facebook wall using his iPad. I did snap a couple shots of the wires though and maybe you can match colors or something.

Well, with everything all tied up I put the car up for sale locally and some muscley guy with a Body-kitted Hyundai Genesis coupe insisted he will buy it this week. Before I showed it to him I took it to get detailed. An hour later this popped up on a friend's facebook feed. They're not even in my village lol.

Shit seriously brightened my day even if my car is, like, higher than it's ever been since I put the coilovers on.

But anyway, I know I said there'd be explosions and babes and awesomeness, but, well, I'm lazy. In any case, I took some parting photos along my favorite driving road. Hope you like em.

And well, that's it. Won't be doing anything as dramatic as a THE END (or maybe ~fin since I'm a hipster), but just keep an eye out for my next Miata.

LTB: Houston, TX area - Clingy NA with daddy issues, a phat 7" rear end, and is down to get sideways on the first date.

Great story (stories), about relationships, tragedy, triumph, and adventure. I am a little sad thinking this NB alone on an island. Thanks for sharing, and I look forward to you "doin" Texas.

I can't believe you are leaving her behind! 3000 bucks is totally worth it! YOU MUST NOT DO THIS TO YOUR CAR!

lol, stoooop, I feel bad enough about it as is. the ironic part is the money i was supposed to be saving up during this last year on island that could have allowed me to bring her to texas half went into maintaining and modifying her. lawlz

Kinda bums me out that my "build thread" didn't even reach half a dozen updates. It's fine though since the guy who's supposed to be buying it is willing to give me my asking price and let me keep my wood Nardi Gara, so my next Miata will definitely have a little bit of Marina in her and I'll have a great start if I can find an NA for a fair price.

I'll be polishing her this afternoon and I might just take a few more goodbye photos afterwards, the shots above were kinda just extras from a photoshoot I actually did for someone else's miata.

This one's named Ashley and she's got a stripped interior, semi-tucked bay and a turbo; she's gangstaaaa.

This makes me so sad. But at least you will have a piece with you. The pictures look great.
