Didn't realize I was without a Build/Story thread, anyhow this is more of a "my Miata history".

Here is my Miata story, errr history, in a nutshell.

This is/was my first ever Miata, and me the new to Miata fresh outta the Military (1994)

the 1992 Special Edition

Here is a photo of it "before" I modified it.............

https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2919/14094115543_0692d38021_z.jpg

...............and here is how she looked right before I sold her.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8167/7535876482_c44f0e5efe_z.jpg

Look close you can see the FET CATZ MSX lights I mounted behind the parking lens and moved the blinker to the outside corner of the lens. And also running FET CATZ XLD lights in the mouth, this way I could run at night without the pop up air brakes.

Parts installed:

Rod Millen Side Skirts
Rod Millen Rear Skirts
Racing Beat Front Bumper
OEM Hardtop
OEM Rear R-pkg Lip
OEM Eunos Front Emblem
OEM Rear Roadster Badge
OEM Rear Eunos Badge
OEM Chrome Valve Cover from Japan
OEM Rear 3 Pedestal Wing
Robbins 3 window Top
GAB 8-Way Adjustable Shocks
Eibach Racing Springs
K&N Intake Kit
Split-fire Silicone Spark plugs and wires
HKS Super Drager Cat Back Exhaust
Hollowed Cat (hahahaha)
BrightLogic Smoked Tail Lens Covers, I repaints the insides to get a custom look
Racing Beat Style bar (yes I know, i know :blaugh2: )
15"x7" SSR Schumacher Wheels (Rare these days)
Panasonic CD player (removable face) and 6 Disc changer in the trunk
Alpine Alarm system

I really liked that car but wanted to start a new project with the 1.8L Motor, so it was time to find a slightly newer NA model.

1991 Miata A-package (my inner rice stage)

Here is "Booger" the 1991 Beater that I had wanted to do a ton of stuff too, however it had the bent/crank issue, a strange electrical bug, the infamous crystal white flaking paint problem, and too many other issues for me to keep dumping money at it. I got a Garage Vary Kit (pre-fast and furious era) and put that kit on, and some nice SSR Type-X wheels, but the guy that re-painted the car did a horrible job, so this car just ended up pissing me off, it was later parted out and then I sold the car to a SpecMiata driver that had a motor but needed a new car.

The original GV bodykit is still here in Florida 30 minutes from me along with some widebody flares it will be getting. (waiting for that owner to get a New NA so he can create a build already)

So I was on the hunt again for another White Miata.

the "other" one :fp:

another 1995 M-Edition I bought in Jan 2011 http://www.flickr.com/photos/phatmiata/sets/72157626537527651/

I got another wild hair up my bum and bought this 1995M you see, it was a garage queen and needed nothing!

I got a good price on it and being 100% original seemed better for a build, I like a blank canvas.

1993 LE Miata with 8,800 Miles. Supercharged by Mazda Dealership and One Owner car!

Original paint, panels, soft top. Original Bilstein suspension, BBS wheels. Has the full red tonneau cover, red boot and some swag (key chain, owners letter and books). Oh yeah.... original Bridgestone tires as well (ha!). Hand washed only. Okay, so for the purists, its not unadulterated but it does move out quite a bit better than stock. Sebring Supercharger AND to really tweak the fundamentalists, it has a pin stripe. Its vinyl, so easily removable. Everything else is stock and working. Cold R12 AC, quick windows, fast working power antenna, all back lights on MSSS work (CD has been checked and works), cruise control works, power mirrors work like new, etc..

As time permits Ill be upgrading the 1995-M and enjoying 1993LE, or maybe Ill just sell one but what a toss up, have not figured out what to do yet?

I have a TON of cool parts I want to install but just have not had time with the kids.

Here it is when i picked it up early this year. Nice thing to wake up to in the morning eh?

crappy cell phone picture.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8001/7523813602_d1961c20d2_z.jpg

So far the only thing I have done with the 1993 LE was install some new tires.

Falcon Azenis 615K's 195/60 -14's got these from a friend in the local club who had them less than a month and upgraded to 15" wheels/tires.

Come out to one of the east-side meets, ill give you a ride, it feels great man, you would love it!

Pretty much do have everything planned out, just waiting on a few more items from Japan.

That and I need TIME, when you have 2 kids and a fulltime job there is not enough time in the day for the car hobby.

But Ive been sneaking in more time for the Miata. :carwash:

Club drives, thrives on Miatas

These fans of the Mazda roadster are counting the days until they set eyes on the new model.

http://www.fagerquist.com/miata/mod/randy.jpg

Tampa Bay Times
Published April 8, 2005

If you're not already looking forward to Tuesday, you're probably not a Mazda Miata fanatic.

For members of East-Side Miatas of Tampa Bay, Tuesday is huge. That's the day they'll finally get an up-close look at the newly redesigned MX5 Miata.

They'll not only get to look at it, but they'll get to ride around the Tampa Bay area with a 2006 Miata. It's not yet available to the public, and in fact the Miata that's coming to Tampa on Tuesday, enclosed in a Plexiglas box, is the same car that caused a stir when it debuted recently at a New York City car show.

"They put it on the back of a firetruck and they're driving it to cities around the country," said Randy George, the co-founder of East-Side Miatas of Tampa Bay. "One of the things we're doing is to caravan around the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater area with it."

George, who lives in Riverview, founded the club with a friend named Mark Jones in 2000. George had recently moved to Tampa from Jacksonville, where he belonged to a Miata club, and immediately saw the need for a similar club in Tampa.

"There was a club in St. Petersburg, but there wasn't one on the east side of Tampa Bay," George said.

The club that George and Jones envisioned was a little different than most. No club officers, no official nonprofit status, no formal meetings, no dues. Just a bunch of people who love Miatas getting together to talk about cars and whatever other subjects come up.

"Our motto is: "Come for the cars, stay for the people,' " George said. "When you have dues and things like that, it's too much trouble. And too much work."

It wasn't hard to find other people looking for exactly the same kind of club. George and Jones started leaving cards under the windshields of Miatas they saw parked around town. We've got this club, the cards said, and it'd be cool if you'd join us.

Lots of people did. Today, the club has about 120 members.

And even though it's much more informal than most car clubs, East-Side is a particularly active club. Club members meet every Wednesday evening, from 5:30 until 9:30 p.m., at the Chick-fil-A on Waters Avenue near the Veterans Expressway. On a typical week, there will be 15 to 20 Miatas there.

In addition to the weekly get-togethers, the club hosts monthly activities. It could be anything from an autocross or tech session, in which members help each other work on a particular mechanical project, to a barbecue or a canoe trip.

Part of the reason the club is so successful, members say, is that the emphasis is on fun and social activities, with a minimum of time spent on business, record-keeping and finances. When there's a club activity that costs money, members either pay their own way or pass the hat.

There's also an eclecticism to the club membership that appeals to members.

"For me, it the diversity, that's what makes the club special," said Jacques Gee, who joined three years ago. "When I was in the military, I was into low-rider trucks, and I was in a club for that but it was mostly young people. In ours you can find anyone from grandparents to teenagers. There's lawyers and accountants, people I wouldn't normally encounter in day-to-day life, and now I see them every week, and everybody gets along."

Club activities tend to start with car talk, Gee said, but that doesn't usually make up the bulk of the conversation.

"After about 10 or 15 minutes we get away from the cars and talk about everyday life," Gee said. "We talk about who's getting married, who's having babies."

The Miata, obviously, is the common bond among the members. What many members say they appreciate about the roadster is that it combines the sleek styling of a classic sports car with mechanical reliability. George said that several members have turned to Miatas after getting fed up with the constant repairs that their European sports cars required.

"I kept seeing Miatas and I finally bought one, almost on a whim," Gee said. "After I drove it for a while, I said, "Man, this thing is bulletproof. It just doesn't break.' "

It may not have the horsepower of some other sports cars, but it's plenty fast enough for most owners.

"I tell people, the horsepower doesn't matter if it's sitting in the shop all the time," Gee said.

Miatas have stayed essentially the same since they were introduced in 1989, but the 2006 model has some significant changes. Mazda has gone from a 1.8-liter engine to a 2.0, boosting the horsepower from 140 to 170, with a six-speed transmission replacing the old five-speed. There's more leg room inside, and powerful-looking fender flairs outside.

"I can't wait to see it up close," Gee said. "It looks good in the pictures, but a lot of cars look good in pictures and don't look as good up close."

What car did you have in this picture?

Mine is the white 1996 NA, far left corner with Japanese plate (you can only see the headlight, :fp: ), standing next to my NA is none other than 93MIMI, my brother from another mutha, aka Gee Money (he was driving that red NA with the white GV nose, it had a GReddy turbo and ran on 93 Octane blended with Toulene gas. That car was over 300hp and ran like a scalded dog on the highway. :toomuch:

The far right Yellow NA is Dennis' miata, he had that Miata at 650hp  Then sold it and now has the 800+hp NB  which he is selling BTW

the girl in the photo is Amanda, she also had a GReddy turbo on her Mariner blue NA, I think she still does, she moved to Socal.

In the back row you can see John aka Hammerhead, Nick, Fergy, Casey w/his wife, and Brett.

I did get these Bellof Lights recently from Japan. :ninja:

I have some other stuff but would have to take recent photos for you guys, just sucks none of this stuff is installed yet. Life gets in the way you know, and i'm very picky with parts, I will buy it and then realize it won't work with my overall theme for the car and just end up flipping it later. But im pretty sure I will stay with these lights. I tried to get the Bellof Lights from "Mild7" (Luke) when he was parting out his project miata, but I was too slow, however I did manage to grab his NoPro kit. Not sure what Ill do with that (maybe racecar?), as I've been thinking of building a badass street car, and also a wicked track car.

I just came across this Merlot on Minkara. It made me think of what direction you might want to go in with your car. I know it's real tempting to go with dark tan top / interior and bronze wheels but I really like what this guy has done with the polished CE28N wheels and rollbar and Runabout mirrors and clear side winkers. It goes well with the lighter tan interior and Merlot colored seats.

I love this thread and the Belof Headlight kit. A small suggestion Randy. The Merlot paint will look better with a very light tan interior. It would make the car look very elegant. and clean. There was a NA in Europe, I think it belonged to the Buthermotorports.com website back them with this interior color combination. It was sick!!!!!

I have two bodykits already here from Japan. Problem is since I started this forum ive been dumping more money/time into it than what i had planned, as well as 90% of my free time is spent with my kids, so I dont have much time for the Miata, its pretty crappy actually. LOL All these cool parts are just sitting here collecting dust. (insert sad face) But Maybe when the kids get a bit older I will have some more free time. As for right now its a mental build in my head, and I have just been ordering parts that i think might work well for later on.:punchface:

Randy, maybe you could dedicate one Saturday or Sunday a month for your Miata(s). Have a couple of us (Tim and I possibly) come over and give you a hand on some little projects here and there. At least that way, you're still devoting the majority of your time to your family as you should, yet still getting something done on your car every once in a while with some friends. God knows I could use some time out of Lakeland. Just a thought... :drinkto:

Randy.

When you are ready, organize a barbecue meet at your place and invite some of your friends to help you but I know from my own experience nothing beats the joy of doing everything yourself. I am still curious is you are going to order the Murakami trunk lid, with that front bumper you have in now the car will balance better plus the look of it is sick in my point of view. Anyways, I am happy for you and your project and I will follow up this thread to see the outcome of your build.

Take care.

Most likely the M2 will be the classy street car, and the NoPro will be the track duty car. My problem is figuring out which to build first? Once I go all in I will start a separate build for that car. This thread is just more of me acquiring parts first until I'm ready for the build, I would like to just have everything ready to go and do it faster this time, I really hated waiting on parts, so this time I'll just get everything I need first.

IMHO black cars are the best option for a color change if you aren't stripping it to a bare chassis. A black engine bay and on an otherwise silver car would look mighty fine to me.

Although doing that to an LE might be blasphemous.

I have been on and off the fence with this one so much lately its painful, it's keeping me up at night.

But that Auto Transmission just kills it for me, I would have to swap all of that out for a manual. Which is doable, but would cost more money on top of whatever I'm going to have to pay. And I would also have to sell the '93LE to pay for that car since its on eBay I'm sure it will hit 6500+ mark. Oh and my vacation is about the same time as the auction close, so its just crappy timing.

Alright, I'm chiming in. I just bought a '94 Laguna Blue from TX with 57k miles on it. It is an A package with no cruise, and has window cranks, but it has ABS brakes as an option. I bought it because I always wanted to throw my custom red '95 M seats and other custom stuff into a Laguna. I have a '94 black B package car with 28k miles currently with my seats in it. The idea was to change things out a bit. After poring over the car, it isn't as clean as my black car, so I'm selling the Laguna. I am in the process of making it as nice as possible, and it will be. I mention the blue because I have put my red interior into a Mariner Blue car, and that was pretty awesome, this would be better. Randy, I think you should go crazy on the next build, with your contacts and drive, it would be easier for you. How about Sunburst with the LE interior, very Lamborghini. Problem is I cannot bring myself to modify this 93LE, its just too nice of condition, showroom in fact, the leather seats still smells new, this car is just flawless all around.

Some of you are shortsighted. The car in its unmolested state is worth way more than a modded car and doing a mod would easily remove half the value of the car. Remember, original cars are only original up to the point someone changes it. It is better to sell the car to someone interested in a pristine, low mileage car and take the monetary profit to apply to mods - not that phatmiata is in need of more parts. Heck, he could sell what he has, buy an NA and put the rest into a college fund for his kids. I'd say sell it and get a car that doesn't play with your conscience.

afc2112
06-08-2013, 09:45 AM
The value only matters if he's not going to keep it. And unless he wants to make that mistake again, ANY Miata he mods, he'll probably end up keeping it.

Aside from flares, everything is reversible. So what's the deal as long as he keeps the original parts?

And if he's really looking for a Silverstone to molest, he probably shouldn't get a super low mileage example where "reducing the value" is still a problem once he mods and drives it.

It's a never ending cycle if you're going to be that anal about it.

After we removed all the 10mm bolts we soon found out this stinking pulley won't come off unless we remove the front sway bar. Ugh. Looks like I'll pick this up later.

I still have to put the kids to sleep and make a list of the other parts I need to get this back to 100% OEM

But at least the charger if off!!

I have been contemplating a very similar setup for my 92 miata. I am still undecided as to what I will do engine wise.

It's a great system, lots of linear torque. This system only has 9000 miles on it too. The only reason I'm selling it is because folks that want a low mileage car generally want them 100% bone stock.

Yes I plan to sell the kit, its a pretty awesome kit, and it is exactly how the Miata SHOULD have come from the factory! Let me get the car back together, and Ill let you guys know once I am ready to sell.

This kit only has 9000 original miles on it, so its basically brand new, and the nice thing is if any of you guys take your cars to the vintage, or classic car shows this is considered a "period correct" modification, and yes they judge on that too!!

This week will be crazy as the printers called and said the shirts would be ready on Wednesday, (they got backed up on orders from bollywood and some other local convention), but once I pick up the shirts I will be focusing on getting those orders out too!!

Busy busy week ahead!!

Here is something cool I found tonight, so you can read up on the specs of the kit.

Andy, this is the bolt-on and forget about it setup 165 hp, no piggy back, or other mods needed, just bolt it on and you are done. The only time you would need more in the way of engine management, etc is if you go over 6psi boost. I ran this at the stock 6psi boost with stock exhaust, header, cat, etc. And it was pretty damn fast!! And the whine of the charger is just too cool...........

Lake Okeechobee is probably not a go for me, just too busy with other things this year, I will try but no promises..........

Also, did you really let the swaybar stop you? 4 bolts on the mounts and drop it, you don't even need to touch the end links

No just lazy, tired, and ran outta time.

My man Jeff (MadCRX) came over and asked "what's up with the Miata?"

I says "nothing, just tired after work etc etc." so he bust out the tools from his trunk and we took off that SuperCharger pulley.

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/05/15/u9uvuzum.jpg

Had to remove the belly pan and then these 12mm bolts so that we could get some movement on that sway bar.

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/05/15/my2y7y4y.jpg

We did not have to fully remove the sway bar, just loosened the bolts enough so we could wiggle the pulley attachment outta the way. Just needed wiggle room.

And it's off, and in only 10 minutes, LOL

Car looks amazing considering it's age.
If you planned on only doing 'bolt on' stuff to it, I would say keep it and store every little thing you remove (to put back on later).
But if you do not want to modify an original LE, I can understand not wanting to hang on to it.

It is man, it really is............., all the hoses still smell like fresh rubber, and a lot of the parts under the car all still have the paper Japanese part number tags, hahahha, and the interior is just insane, your nose is immeditaly taken over with the small of fresh leather, I feel like I am 21 years old again whenever I drive it. The prior owner never drove it in the rain, garage kept, under a car cover, and only washed it by hand. I have been doing the same with it, just pampering it, the only think I had done was get new tires as I did not trust 20 year old tires no matter how low the miles.

But I have the modding bug again, and if you guys only knew how many parts I have laying about, my wife is mad because I have the Nakamae seats next to the bed, hahahha. Hence why I would like another Miata that I can play with and mod.

Went to see an R-Package for sale today.

I just got done looking at this Miata. It was $4950 last week. Now all the sudden he wants $5900 because someone told him it's and R-package. WTF. I ask if there is any wiggle room on the price. He says I "might" come down on the price by $200. I said well your CAS is leaking, and the timing belt probably has never been changed judging by all the dirt/grease. The front bumper has orange peel from being resprayed. The hood emblem was upside down which made me look harder. I checked the top for leaks and the plastic window is browning and cracked with clear tape covering the holes in the clear window. Rear parking light looks buckled , another sign of damage. Rear has orange peel on the paint so the car got crunched. Looked underneath and the frame rails have been repainted black. Hummm guess I will pass on this one. Guy thinks it's super rare because it's and R-package. So not willing to come down on his price. I says well if you plan to track it that's great but it's not a collectible. It's just a red Miata. Let me know when you lower the price lol

I always wanted to convert a black NB to red interior, use Randy's seats, and complete Nakamae parts to complete the interior. I think there was an NB that came with red door panels it was OEM option in Europe, or simply use Nakamae door panels as option no. 2. Basically do a 93LE conversion on the NB, that would be really cool.

This exhaust came from Japan, and spent a few years in Florida with me, then visited Stoly out in Texas for a couple years, and now its back home with me again!

Zoom Zoom !!!!! :slayer:

props to Adam for super awesome packing.

A 5 minute clean up with some Formula 88 and she looks as good as new!

"IF", and that is a big "IF", if I can get my RED Nakamae seats back I will sell the TAN Nakamae seats……. and maybe the full 1991 BRG / TAN interior

I will give up quite a bit - and have recently - but the red Nakamae seats aren't going anywhere. :P

Btw, Randy is now the new - and hopefully final owner of my NOS Mazda OEM red LE full carpet set that I had hoarded for just over 10 years. LOL.

Congratulations, Randy-san!

Okay time to get serious on the '93 LE Street Car build.

Decided to sell the '95 Merlot so I have one less car to worry about

Drove the car to my buddies place, it really rides & handles awesome with the racing beat springs, racing beat sways, AGX 8-ways, and EBC Red Brake pads, it is AutoX ready!!

We snapped these photos of the 95 Miata before I sold it

This is a great angle, the color is so nice in daylight, but even nicer at dusk/dawn

Interior is a solid 9/10 it's even upgraded to the "Closed Loop" carpet vs the "Cut Pile" that the NA8 cars had
