KG Works - Dual Head Lamp Conversion (The Originator)

Designed to be mounted by simply exchanging units, so no special wiring is necessary, plug & play ready. These lights gained popularity when they were used on Mazda's Concept car the "M-Speedster" at the 1993 Chicago Auto Show by Mazda of America and have been very popular ever since. Since these are custom made they are produced at a rate of only about 5 sets a month, there is a 4 to 6 week wait after ordering. These lights can be installed in half a day even by an amateur. Introduced in 1993 by KG-Works (Original Design). Still available in Japan from KG-Works, (Special Order, Made-To-Order only) http://miataroadster.com/kg_works/kg_works_lowprofile_headlamp_kits/kgwlowprokit/i-1677250.aspx

The parking light mesh "Cold Air Intake" is also designed by KG Works and can also be ordered from MiataRoadster.com, Rspeed.net, or Rev9 as a special order item. Pictures from KG works ad in HyperREV-1 (1994)

KGWorks brand was established by a great fan of MIATA, in 1992.
The Company is distributing one and only selected products manufactured with a passion of representing "beauty of MIATA" and "craftsmanship."
We innovate products not to give its priority over business, but "embodied in improved designs and functions" and "manufacture products for what we want" are our committed themes.
Today, as a result our products go beyond meeting customers needs to fulfilling their desires.
There are many products which have been manufactured and imitated without any permissions.
"Replacement Top" by AMCO is our own design with repeated examinations by KGWorks. BSP "Lowprofile dual light kit" is also an imitation from the one out of four items we manufactured and exported to the States in 1993. However, a light from "M Speedster" in MRA Chicago Show model is the one we produced.
There are many other products such as "Wheel Spacer," "Hight Adjust Dumper" as well.
It may occur and increase to have our products imitations if we represent our site here but furthermore, I would like to introduce our products made by KGWorks.

Bodyshop Hayashi - Flush Type Lamp Conversion

Showcased at the 1992 Tokyo Auto Salon this was Jack Hayashi's cleaner than clean example of how to make a miata his own. This headlight conversion was probably the most expensive, but also the best designed even to date. The headlights look like fix mounted types but actually retain the stock headlight motors to raise the headlight housing from the rear to better aim the light output onto the road. This helps to compensate for the slope of the Miatas front nose and hood area. Whereas most low profile kits will actually make you lose a bit of your night time vision. He made 2 versions of these, first was a flash clear lid, and the 2nd version had the double bubble humps as seen below on Greg G's Miata.

Hayashi Body Shop also produced a retro tail lamp setup (out of production) however Barchetta & TRAP now produce the same versions.

Racing Sports Active - Low Profile Rectangle Type Conversion

Similar to other low profile designs, RS-Active uses a rectangle type light instead of circular ones. They made two version of these while in production, the main difference was the bulb and housing type. Another note: These particular lenses have a dichroic(?) coating on the low beam portion which gives it the yellowish hue despite being a normal white bulb.

Some notes from jnshk

- There were a handful of minor variations produced with slightly different housings (some had active cooling fans and heat sinks mounted on the housing, some had a dichroic coating on the lens, etc), and I think that there was a "version 2" variety which used an H4 bulb. If I recall correctly, Ric ultimately kept the v2 housings on his gorgeous Miata.

Here are a few images of my old RSA units for your consideration:

BrainStorm Performance - Low Profile Head Light Conversion

This was BSP's answer to the call for an affordable low profile headlight kit for the US Miata Aftermarket. Same design product as the as ones in Japan but manufactured in the USA. This was the 1st kit made available in the USA for Miatas, and was extremly popular. There was actually a waiting list for them years back (mid-late 90's) BrainStorm Performance had been based out of Georgia, and then moved out to California, not sure what became of them as the website is a dead link now. However other Miata based companys are now carrying the kits, and some members have even managed to upgrade the kits to HID.

Cobalt low-profile dual headlamp

Similar in design to the BSP setup, this version sits a bit higher and offer better lighting on the road, note: this kit does require you to cut a small section of your miata's engine bay where as the BSP version does not. But the lighting output is well worth it!

They use Hella 90mm H9 projectors in the low beams and 90mm H9 reflectors in the high beams. These can be converted to D2S pretty easily without any changes to the housings, at least on the projector low beams.

You can find these still for sale online at; http://miataroadster.com/moss_motors.../i-532757.aspx

Here are some photos from Revlimiter's Miata to show what they look like installed

Brainstorm Performance - Euro Fixed Headlight Conversion

This was the next version of BSP's headlight kits for the Miata. This would take about 15 pounds off your Miata, make your Miata more aerodynamic, (no more barn door air-brakes) however the light output was said to be less than stock output due to the slope of the Miatas nose. Most people that have this kit have upgraded the lamps to something with a higher output to help fix that problem.

Barchetta Rear Tail Lights

These are actually the Hayashi Tail Lights, once Hayashi stopped making them Barchetta took over production with permission from Mr. Hayashi, they made these as a "Limited Production" item originally, however I believe they still produce these on a made-to-order basis. I had a set of these on my Miata and loved them! You will need to set up a separate reverse/backup light under your bumper, not hard to do.
(Zoom Engineering sells white backup lamps BTW)

Bellof Low Pro

I have very little information on these and would love to have some more. I got my set second hand but unused from a forum member who was parting out a car he'd never finished building. As far as I can tell, they're extremely rare (at least here in the U.S.) and were only produced in limited quantities or for a very short period of time. Build quality of the kit is good and they look fantastic. Very low-profile rectangular shape suits the face of the NA well.

Pretty sure they're made in Austria.

BSP Low Profile Bi-Xenon conversion

I think this is the first succesfull hid conversion for the BSP low profiles

So heres my car fitted with the projectors. I had to use the inner because there wasnt enough room on the outside. Now only i need to find some other lens that will fit in the outside. These are the original brainstorm lenses.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v280/Vincent1988/2011-12-30120401.jpg

The projectors itself are Morimoto mini D2s projectors, The front lens are rear backuplights from jokon. These had the perfect shape i searched for. Pretty simple, cut open the back of the jokon lens slide the projector in, and custom made "housing" for weather sealing.

Also had the cut the original BSP units to fit the projectors because the didnt fit trough the hole where the sealed beams where. But all together these things are amazing.

Not my pic but this is the cutoff of these amazing projectors.

When the weather is getting better is will make better pictures.

Here is an example hoe it will look like. I will make a picture myself soon

i really like the look of low pro headlights but dont think i wanna spend 500 just yet. i have seen the stock NA headlights that have been moded to only come up half way..
how well do the lights work after that? as far as brightness. pretty much what im asking is.. will i still be able to see at night?
and how hard is it to mod the lights in this manner?

thanks,
Corey

Are you referring to "sleepy eyes" where the stock popups are only half-up? If so, then you need to be aware that the headlights are not "functional" as headlights in this position. (How could they be, since they are pointed at your bumper?) This effect is achieved to let fresh air into the engine bay, and when the headlights are needed they must be returned to full-height.

(How could they be, since they are pointed at your bumper?) This effect is achieved to let fresh air into the engine bay, and when the headlights are needed they must be returned to full-height.

ooooooooohhh :stupid:

Adding a couple more shots of just how nicely done, the RS Active lights are, closeup. My set has the high beam bulb coated instead, so it beams out yellow instead on high beam (more like a fog light). Driving lights are clear beam and not yellowish as some have noted on the internet.

Yes, I'm using OEM Mazda NA fog lights. They are rarely seen in North America, though they were a dealer installed option on the early cars. They are easy to find in Japan and in UK and Australia where a lot of JDM cars are exported.

I can chime in on this one, as I have had the Phase 6 lights as well as the current Phase 7 lights. They are definitely heavy compared to traditional sealed beam and ecode headlights. The headlight motors have no issues raising/lowering them, but I have found that headlight "shake" (from the car's vibrations and from hitting bumps) when the lights are up is a bit worse than otherwise. I think largely it's due to worn hardware and components allowing more flex than there should be, since the passenger side doesn't flex much at all but the driver side shakes a lot. It's a little bit annoying, but it's not to be unexpected from a car that is 16+ years old.

Well, I bit the bullet and purchased a set of the Trucklite Phase 7s. These are the best headlights that I have owned so far! Headlight shake is a bit more noticeable but not terrible - as you mentioned jnshk, probably has more to do with worn hardware than anything else. Expensive headlights but worth it as a fair portion of my daily commute is on unlit rural roads and now, I can actually see what is up ahead of me and on the sides of the road without blinding oncoming traffic. The high beams are an absolute revelation! Now, every bulb on my car is an LED...so far, so good!!

Hmmm... Those look to be about the same size as the Fiat assemblies used in the Morettes, wonder if they mount the same way. I've wanted to upgrade to something that looks like that for a while. Just something else on the to do list.

They will fit(smaller ones). I looked into it when I used to have my Morettes. Esqueleto uses the Hella lamps. They are super expensive so I never went that route. Rallylights.com sells Hella Lights. They are the 8405 Series.

A guy in Japan did the exact same modification. He used custom brackets to mount the Hella lights to the Morettes.

Oh man, that looks great. Thanks for posting that info! The options on the rallylights page is a little confusing at first glance, I'll have to take a more in-depth look later.

I've been using Cibié H4 headlamps since early '70's. These are European Code lamps. Standard 60/55watt bulbs. They come up on eBay now and again. And on Amazon; http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008DQV88Q/ref=pe_850140_124470460_em_1p_0_ti

You can't go wrong with this set-up. Sharp cutoff with a 15° rise to the right to illuminate the right hand side of the road, and the mirrors of overtaken vehicles.
(for off-road use only of course.)

phk, digging the Cibié H4 headlamps :slayer:

bogart, I like both styles, the beliefs are insanely hard to find, nice score!! I have some bellof lights here, but have not found a set of the RS-Active to play with yet, waiting for a buddy to sell me his RS Active so that I can compare them both side to side. The light output looks to be a lot better on that bellof in your photo though.

comparing the bellofs to the rs actives, the bellof have a much better beam pattern. i just happen to be selling the rs active setup

Hey Phat! Paul here.

Hey this is the type of Head light kit my Bro has. I was wondering if anyone else has them and if they still have the instruction Manual. He misplaced his and I would love to make an attempt to install them for him.

Thanks

Brainstorm Performance - Euro Fixed Headlight Conversion

This was the next version of BSP's headlight kits for the Miata. This would take about 15 pounds off your Miata, make your Miata more aerodynamic, (no more barn door air-brakes) however the light output was said to be less than stock output due to the slope of the Miatas nose. Most people that have this kit have upgraded the lamps to something with a higher output to help fix that problem.

Just received these beauties, first thought I had bought Zoom Elan taillights. But I found out they are actually Bodyshop Hayashi's. That is a good thing right? Only one problem, one of the trimrings is missing. Since I had mistaken this set foor the Zoom version, I thought this wouldn't be a big issue, since these are still being produced. Does anybody know of a way to get these rings?

Hey Patrick I have these exact set and I just have my rings rechromed. I don't think they are still produced. I was actually thinking of refitting the Zoom Elan lights and rings into these housing if I did not get a good price from the chrome shop.

I was thinking the same, but don't know if they would fit. But maybe there is a way to copy the other rings.

We could ask folks that have the Zoom for the lights dimension. I strongly believe it will fit. Maybe much cheaper than have someone make a set of rings. I can ask Ken of RetroModern if he can make a set and how much. I really want the rings to be squared cut.

Let me know what you come up with. Not in a hurry, these lights will be part of a new build. But since I'm in the process of buying a new house, that could take a while ;) I know these units use Nissan lights, and the Zooms don't.

I hear you. IIRC the Zoom lights are Nissin lol.

Bumping this for reasons. :whistling:
--PS NB tail options are hard to choose between--

Unrealted, for now, question... Has anyone with an NB (specifically NB2) converted their headlamps to LED. I'm quite interested. The plug and play kits look a little nicer than the mess you have to go through to install HIDs. SUPERBRIGHTLEDs has a nice kit, but I'm not too sure it would work with my intake setup. https://www.superbrightleds.com/moreinfo/front-fog-light-bulb/led-headlight-kit-hb4-9006-led-headlight-bulbs-conversion-kit-with-flexible-tinned-copper-braid/2214/5001/. Eventually, I think a full LED conversion would be nice.

Debating on baking/painting the headlamp buckets. While they are off the lenses will be refinished as well. I thought about color matching, but would hate it to turn out ricey. I think black buckets would stand out a little too much, though they look great on the ND. ND has a tiny hosing, which may be why. Yellow lenses do look pretty nice, I just don't know how that color would be for actual driving.

I looked into a different headlight housing setup, but there aren't any aftermarket ones that look fantastic.

DO EEETT! Black headlight housings look so much better on the NB.

I kinda like it! Here she is with the running lights and and halos on. The halos are really very noticeable in bright sunlight.

Add in some halogen high beams (I think I'll need to get some H1 LEDs for the high beams, too.):

Yes, I realize that running with 6 lights on is illegal in most places. I haven't hooked up the auto-dim feature yet, but I may later. I want to drive with them at night and see what effect they have on both my ability to see the road and whether they seem to bother oncoming traffic before I decide. Honestly, the only time I would ever have the high beams on would be in the absence of any other cars anyway, so I'm not too concerned about it.

All lights on with the turnleft signal activated:
