View Full Version : SNOW! Whos driving their miatas in the snow this winter?

ChrisJuliano

Its snowing as we speak in PA, cant wait to drive the miata in the winter! I did all I can to try to prevent rust since my miata has never seen a winter ever, and was purchased with low milage (57k), so I will be washing mine every week and sprayed a protective 3m rust prevention.

What are you doing to your cars for this winter? And whos driving theirs in the snow?:D

I bought a 4WD Tacoma, to replace my now defunct 4WD Cherokee XJ, to avoid such a predicament. My Miata most likely got some snow prior to my ownership, since it was picked up by yours truly in Indianapolis. With that said, not on my watch!!! :nightmare::cold:

I'll drive mine in the snow if we get any this year. Usually it's only an inch or two once or twice a year. They don't salt the roads here so I don't have to worry about that.

ChrisJuliano
12-29-2011, 07:03 PM
So jealous! They salt the hell outta roads here. Constantly driving hearing it hit up into the fenders 24/7 literally.

AntiochOG
12-29-2011, 07:06 PM
They just sand and gravel here. It's annoying and it lingers on the roads for months causing rock chips, but at least it isn't corrosive.

ChrisJuliano
12-29-2011, 07:11 PM
My miata is rust free, literally cant find a salt sized grain of rust on it at all so we will see the effects of it after this winter, then next year I might buy a beater miata as a DD, and this will become my track/weekend car.

I wouldnt mind sand on the roads:D But it would do absolutely nothing in the amount of snow we get.

I'd drive in the snow if I could, but we don't see much snow here in Florida. I used to love driving in the snow when I lived up north though. One of my favorite snow cars was a '84 Camero with a 305 and a 5-speed. Wheeeee!

Arrgh, this! I hate it when they gravel the roads. It sits around waiting to chip your cars paint and windshield and it never gets cleaned up.
It was 53 degrees here yesterday. I repainted my steelies that wear my snow tires. They were getting dusty. I fucking love global warming.

here near Milan (i live 170metres over sea level) we can have from 0 to 10 days/year of snow... this is seems to be very warm we had 8-10°C more than the standard temperature in this season. maybe in Gen or Feb will snow... i want to test my GV lip and feel like Homer Simpson as Mr.Plow...

It was an amazing trip. Beautiful weather, almost no traffic and the picture is taken on a 1.8 mile strech. Was also fun overtaking new suvs and family saloons :stung: Driving the miata without studded tires, abs or any other electrical assistance really gives a good feel for driving on snow and ice. The limit is really in the fingertips, after i got used to it, that is :)

That's a nice stretch. Like Chris hinted at, we're used to road icebergs, ice potholes and dumb people.

When I had my mk4 jetta the front bumper was PERFECTLY designed to take big ass ice chunks and not do any damage because it was bent back at a 45 degree angle, I had a big ass skid plate on the car too so the ice chunks never bothered me I would hit LITERALLY backetball sizedd ice chunks off semi trucks and never was worried (nor did I care car was slightly beat) but this winter is going to scare me so much since my miata is stupid clean haha. Hopefully this winter ends in no broken parts:)

ChrisJuliano
01-03-2012, 12:08 AM
Just got back from going out to eat then going drifting after. (in a legal environment of course;p) I must say just on the way to eat over 10 tow trucks passed me in a 30 minute drive, and I got stuck in traffic due to 2 cars sliding off road and flipping, it was one of the worst snow storms and roads I have ever seen. With 2 blizzaks up front, and 2 i-pikes in the rear I was going the speed limit which was over double what other people were doing and I was just cruising not even sliding at all or doing anything sketchy. So for all the people who say miatas in winter is a bad idea, if you have the proper tires it handled far better than my mk4 jetta in the snow. The same propertys that make it predictable in the dry make it very predictable in the snow.

I love my miata SO much more :D All my fears of winter are now gone and it is actually a very fun experience! Just gotta pay attention to other drivers and always keep aware and its a very safe winter car.

Ice storm warning now? Great…
Got a good foot of snow, now with an unhealthy layer of ice on top. It's like a freakin' snow creme brulee, but nowhere near as good. My house is one of the few left in the neighborhood that has trees around it too. Fuck.
We've already has one big ass branch come down on the roof. Plus my idiot brother already used up all the firewood. So when the power goes out (which it most likely will) we're pretty much screwed.
I'll probably be able to get my car out of the some time next week. It's pretty much knee deep here. I'm pretty much over this now.
I barely even got to drive my car around in the snow at all. It's was either too little, and now it's way to much.

If it were the norm, then I'd probably get used to it, but this happens maybe once a year here. I can't leave unless I walk since nobody will plow the roads in my neighborhood.

Hooray, I have power again after four freakin' days!
Got about 14 inches of snow here over about a day and a half ('round last Wednesday), that then turned to freezing rain and put about a quarter to a half inch layer of ice on everything.
It was like walking through a creme brulee, which I've had to do everywhere lately.
Some places it looks like bombs had gone off from the amount of trees on the ground, and the power lines got taken out with them.
My car has been stuck in the garage for a week. The road crews are assholes around here. Everything is basically plowed, except my neighborhood and there's been a foot of frozen slush keeping me from leaving.
I can get out finally now, I think. Needless to say, I've gotten a bit of cabin fever.
I made a pretty serious Lego castle while the power was out.

Quick video from Friday night before I got hit, don't mind my intake, it's really annoying in some parts of the video, I tried to lower the volume on some parts because of it:

Yea, but I was quoted $800 from the bodyshop so I'm going to bang it out from the inside w/ a friend and just get it looking decent. Might even try some of those suction cups.

My MSM's 3rd Winter.

I use the Stock 17" MSM Wheels, with Ruber Band Blizzak Tires.

First year I am lowered though. So far, it has not been an issue since Chicagoland has not had much snow. Traction is not an issue though.

It looks SO funny with those Giant Wheels. They are pretty good for the snow though, the heavier weight seems to be good to keep wheelspin down.

I don't remember how much I paid for them, but it was not that much... I think. They are on their third winter and there is still tons of tread left. Been VERY happy with them.

looks awesome stumpy

Thanks, it is not bad for Wintermode... :)

havin fun sorry for boring video it looks super slow but it was actually alot faster than it looks and I suck so couldnt get much angle at that speed:fab:

Just turn in more and use more throttle to get a better angle, just not too much so you don't spin. But after you spin a couple times you'll get a hang of it and be able to hold it more sideways for longer.

After fixing my dent from the last time going out I think I might be ready for some more snow to go out again, definitely staying on my own rather than a bigger group this time though. Don't need what we nicknamed the "Asian Sensation Drift King" sliding into me again as he tries to "rear enter" in a parking lot going the opposite direction of everyone else.

Got the damn pricktease of snow... enough to make drivers freak (irrationally, of course) but not enough / not cold enough to actually stick to anything but the medians and lawns. Weak.

Finally got some pictures taken of my car with a real camera playing in the snow. Waiting to get them all but here's one of the ones I got, not the greatest shot but it'll do for now. I have no idea how to use any photo editing software so this is straight off the camera.

Agreed.

We had three inches of the white stuff, here in CowTown this morning, so I drove my '02 4X4 Taco to work. That's the reason for it's existance...
