It's funny. I started looking for a 2nd gen MR2 waaaay back in 2006 when I was looking to replace my Miata with a new toy. I even went as far as registering on MR2.com and started asking questions about the car. I remember not being impressed with how heavy it was for a relatively weak n/a engine and I didn't really want to deal with a turbo.

Then I found out how hard it was to find one...I stopped looking.

Fast forward to May 2012 and I start itching for a new toy and I started seriously looking on Craigslist again for 240Z (I actually never stop looking for Zs). For kicks, I started searching for MR2s again and noticed how much they've come down in price. Although the Turbos were still commanding healthy prices.

The main goal was to find a hardtop. Again, all I found were targas or automatics.

About a month into the search, I saw this ad while I was vacationing in Banff.

Factory JDM 3rd 3SGTE engine setup (Ceramic Turbo), JDM 5spd w/TRD LSD, and TRD mounts, no coolant/oil leaks, doesn't burn oil/coolant, manual everything (except side mirrors), and extremely light hardtop model. Electronic Boost Controller, Exhaust Temp Gauge, and Boost Gauge, Cross-Drilled/Slotted Rotors, Ceramic Brakes (90% life on them), Adjustable KYB's and Eibach ProSport Springs. This was intended as a project/road course car that ended up being a daily driver until recent new car purchase. Needs paint and some TLC. No major engine issues. No A/C but I have most of the lines if needed, all interior is in place, headlight motors function correctly, and no seals leak in car. Original JDM cluster that came with engine but converted electronically to mph. Asking 4k OBO.

I wasn't completely sure I would even look at it, thinking I wanted to blow more money on a trip to Rio or Iceland.

On a whim, I answered the ad and arranged a test drive...

The good:
- No leaks
- hardtop
- manual rack, manual windows
- Turbo!!!
- LSD
- 5 way KYBs & Eibach springs

The bad:
- Exhaust leak
- needed tires, bodywork
- Horn is inop
- E-brake is inop
- Diff is loud

Then I drove it...It felt really good. I was hooked, but I wasn't sure I'd buy this one. So, I kept looking and test drove a few n/a models. Each car had a few issues and the n/a ones weren't significantly cheaper.

So, I dug into the history of the car and found the owner previous to the one selling it. Turns out that he is a well respected MR2 specialist and this was his track car, although it sat more than it did any racing. In the end, he sold it to fund a RHD example.

I originally wanted him to check out the car before making an offer, but Tropical Storm Debbie prevented that. I couldn't wait any longer during the storms and threw out an offer.

If he turned it down, no big deal. A day later, he came back with a counter offer only $200 higher than what I offered him. I tentatively agreed...

The day I picked it up with a friend and fellow Miata enthusiast, we stopped at the Previous POs shop for a brief overall look and piece of mind.

And then it was off to the paint shop. I really despised the multi-color turquoise and chose Porsche's Speedgelb.

Yep. Even if it was just a 2nd gen, it would have still been a pretty good deal. One of the N/As I looked at was priced at $3k and they weren't budging...I got this one for only a several hundred dollars more.

Anyway, here's how she looks today.

Thanks for the compliments everyone! It is definitely a work in progress, but it's getting there. Slowly but surely.

Ralph and Gavin, it's a shame you guys won't be in Sebring for Miatober...Speaking of September, Ralph, when are are you going turbo and are you bringing the Miata down here?

Gavin, we'll have to do a fun run sometime...

And I'm not entirely certain yet, but I think I'm seeing 15 psi on the boost gauge.

According to my financial spreadsheet , the turbo will not be bought/installed until Dec 2013. I will have both the FCM coilovers and the 949 15X8's by the end of August. I will have also ALL the maintenance taken care off by Nov 2012 (t-belts, seals, rollers, WP, hoses, front/rear hubs and maybe the radiator...

By springs next year; AEM, Toyota COPS, FM clutch/flywheel and most likely the FM "budget" Wildwood brakes...

As to when I'll take the Miata back to FL... I have NO IDEA!

Like what? I've never found them particularly hard to work on... some things might take longer than others, but none of it is "hard," per se. It's just nuts and bolts.

Sorry, that sounded like macho posturing, wasn't the intent. What'd you find hard? :)

Just the tight space around the motor. Granted I had an AE92 with a 4AGZE when he had his. I just liked not having to climb over the trunk to work on things. The clutch job we did wasn't fun at all.

Yeah, positioning with the storage space behind the motor can suck sometimes... pretty much have to do everything from the side. Beyond that, i find them probably the easiest car to work on that came with that motor.

The hardest thing with the MR2 is resigning yourself to the idea that you'll probably be pulling the motor more often than your used to to do things like clutches... that said, once you do it a time or two, it doesn't take much time at all. :)

08-08-2012, 03:30 PM
Yeah but I was just happy being able to work on my AE92 from 3 out of 4 sides. But the SW20 was always a car that I had wanted. Especially with the Wide body TRD kit.

I love me some All Trac though. I remember a neighbor of my friend had one and we used to drive by all the time just to look at it. It was white and had some red stickers on it. It may have even been wearing some RPF1s. I do remember the black soot on the rear bumper though.

Great times.

I suppose it's time for an update.

The good thing is that I finally sold the uber heavy IS300 wheels. I'm definitely glad because I felt that 17s looked too big for the car.

Anyway, I mounted up the R32 wheels in preparation for Sebring.

Thanks. The yellow definitely stands out! Though there are times I wish I went for a brighter yellow like when I'm parked next to a yellow Elise or a Victory Yellow C6. The Porsche Yellow is a tiny bit more subtle.

Then again, I'm happy with it. Yellow MR2s are very rare and the Toyota OEM yellow is kinda blah.

Austin took the ones going from right to left and the track photographer took the ones near the start / finish line.

Obviously, I haven't mastered the art of driving the car while simultaneously taking photos trackside. :)

Does the car run, does it have rust and is it a turbo?

I look at MR2s like I do with FDs, it's my opinion that they look better with the stock body...But if you can get it closer to 3k, that would be pretty tempting. Though I will say it looks even more of a project than the one I got!

You must teach me, Arvin.

This one was really easy. I'll bring my laptop and I'll show you in Miatapalooza if we have time.

It's not as bright as Ferrari Fly Yellow...But in some lighting situations it comes close.

The last three shots are my favorite. God I love this car.

I have favorites on page 2, 4 and 5...It's really tough to choose just 3 or 4 faves. That said, I do think my image quality is improving a bit. (hopefully)

You're pictures are amazing, Arvin. I'm too much of a novice to tell if they are getting better or not.

Just compare my photos from the first page to the last few I've been posting. Look at the sharpness and the vibrance of the colors.

Anyway, I went on a fun run yesterday...

Here's a teaser video (note, I'm still waiting on footage from a Contour, Iphone and 2 GoPro Black Editions...I also edited this on Movie Maker as opposed to the AVID Media Composer 6 I use at work)

Car looks good as always. Where did you go?

Are the photos warm? Or is it just me?

And yes, those pics are very much on the warm side. From looking at his website, he has a much warmer treatment than I what I normally go for, but the results are very nice imo.

Thanks. I honestly think I could do better. I'll re-do it again once rainy season is over.
