What suspension are you using in your Miata RIGHT NOW??!!!

Stock Setup?

Aftermarket Spring and/or Shocks?

Coilovers?

Tell us what you like or dislike about it, if you are planning to change your system out what will you eventually get?

Oh yeah and POST SOME PHOTOS!

Here is mine, from the 1993 LE, factory Bilstein Setup

Uselessly in!

Stock factory original '91 shocks with 104k.
Stock springs.
Stock bushings.
Stock sway bars.

Needless to say, my "racecar" needs for me to land a job soon.

Fat Cat Motorsports Elite Coilovers. Front Springs are 600 lbs, rears are 375 lbs. WILL never have another Miata that is not riding on FCM's! LOVE THEM!

Tein Flex: 7K / 6K, no RSB. Even on full soft, rides a bit harsh* but overall handling is superb.

*As a point of reference: On my Mazda3, I have KW V3s at damn near full stiff and they're less harsh than Flex on the Miata at full soft.

Freebie FTW!!! Previous owner gave them to me with purchase of rollbar and sways.

Riceland coils

They'll work until I decide to spend the money on something else. Rides like crap, but it's better than the old worn out 17 yr old, 225k mile shocks that were in it.

Stock.

Which means Bilsteins, Mazdaspeed springs, Mazdaspeed front and rear sway bars with poly bushings.

Setup is overdamped and just kinda MEH in general.

^ Why don't you throw on higher rate springs and lower it to see how it changes. (concealer)

OEM Bilstein Sport shocks (10AE)
Ebay Coil sleeves/springs (unsure of spring rates)
FCM 46 36 bump stops
NB Front hats ISC Rear Hats
ES Poly Bushings

I like/ dislike my shocks atm. Handles very nicely, but all the vertical accelerations get annoying after a while of driving on bumpy roads. Aside from that, I'm very happy with my set-up for the money spent. I'm probably gonna keep it like this for a while unless I can get something substantially nicer for a great price that I can't pass up.

Money is a main factor, but when I do upgrade it'd be between:
>R-Speed Fortune Auto 500, > FCM Elite > Ohlins DFV

It's bouncy because of those lowering springs. You may be better of with factory springs, and adjust the Koni's height.

Like I said, a little bouncy. Its really when I go over dramatic bumps.
The yellows only adjust on the damper, not the height. The springs are also static, so those don't change either. I'll probably just adjust the damper on the shocks and it will take care of it. But I really don't mind it.

No way I'm posting a pic. PO painted the Konis black but it's peeling and the yellow is starting to show - looks awful. And dirty because I only clean the top of the car because I'm kinda lazy like that.

FM II complete with sways.
Car sits at 12.5fr and about 12.75r .

I can get over "most" speedbumps anywhere without dragging. I daily drive this and put anywhere from 3-400miles a week on it. IMOP its probably the best all around suspension out there thats easy to live with and is still a massive upgrade from stock.

Tein Basics with Fat Cat bumpstops and NB hats. Springs are 7kg-5kg. It's pretty good, but could be a lot better.
Lowering the rear spring rates and the FCM bumpstops help improve the Basic setup, but it still feel underdamped, especially on compression for the rears.
But it still works fine as a set it and forget it for being a daily driver/backroad stormer.

I really really love them. Driving is just more pleasurable with these in comparison to my not so worn out 40k stock suspension. I can't compare them to other setups since as I have never had any others. But for those that have ridden in my car, they have enjoyed themselves. they run setups such as Tiens mono, SS, and basics.

I set my ride height @ 12.25 Front and 12.75 rear. I have been told by must everyone that for optimum handling there should be a .5 difference between front and rear.

Car looks tight, and it'll look better once I get those 15X8 rims!

Well you have a .5 spread, which is good. I choosed that ride height due to the crappy OK roads. I will be moving back to Denver in the near future, and generally the roads over there are not much better.

I have driven all over Wake County, NC, your roads are pretty good over there!

I'm currently running 550/350 springs on SD valved Bilsteins with spec miata sleeves. IMO the best bang for the buck setup, especially if you can find a used set. I previously ran a FM/Illumina setup but found that too soft but quite nice for daily driver duty.

The main ones that concern me are at my townhouse complex. Taking them at an angle is the only way to get across. If I don't get the angle just right or if I have a passenger I scrape.

installed some Racelands a couple days ago. they're only for the time being until i save up and get some better coilovers.

does anyone know why they're squeaking though, and possible fix? i think it's the bumpstop thing. i notice it over some small bumps, and going in/out of my driveway. no rattles. no steering issues. seems all good except for when it squeaks; kind of annoying.

zoomzoomstop
10-27-2012, 08:09 PM
I'd be willing to bet it is just the lower bushings
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a228/Blaster50/zzxzra-set-34-04_1-1.jpg

did you get them new or used ?

used might require replacement bushings

if they are in good shape or new you might fix it by simply
loosening the thru bolt, wiggle shock around and retighten
also a shot of ‘silicone’ lubrication might help (no WD40)

iKhanh
10-28-2012, 12:28 AM
i actually got them used. but they're pretty new. the threads were clean, no damage. the guy i bought it from claimed he only had like 300mi on them. you think Shin-Etsu grease would work there? lol i have some still from when i was lubricating my windows.

zoomzoomstop
10-28-2012, 12:05 PM
OK so you are good with the visual inspection of the bushing, good...

I am not familiar with Shin-Etsu, but if it is silicone based it should be safe

my point mainly is maybe the rubber is 'tweaked' and maybe moving it will
cure your annoying squeak. Did you tighten the thru bolts with car jacked up (wheels hanging)
if so try loosening them, then put vehicle weight on and re-tighten them.
just a thought, and it is easy and free :)

I have even loosened them, jack car up, then abruptly released the jack so to make the car bounce
then re-tighten (sometimes it worked-sometimes it didn't)

iKhanh
10-28-2012, 02:22 PM
yeah i tightened them while the car was lifted. yeah i guess i'll try to get the car up and fiddle with it some more when i'm not lazy and when it's not raining lol. though i don't wanna "drop" my car and let it bounce. as crappy as these coilovers are, i'm kinda scared that it will bottom out.
