1996 Mazda Miata - Oh Noh You Didn’t!

The fine Japanese art of masks, movement and theater are carried on JDMPalace’s Mazda Miata.

http://image.superstreetonline.com/f/features/sstp_1209_1996_mazda_miata/42600324+w640/sstp-1209-01+1996-mazda-miata+cover.jpg

Japan is a nation of traditions—and nowhere is this more evident than in the theater. We’re not talking about that new-fangled avant-garde 17th century kabuki stuff. Retreat further into history back to the 14th century and the Noh form. Yeah, Noh: the highly-regimented form that incorporates dance, costume, chanting, the jo-ha-kyu (or “beginning, break, rapid”) slow-to-fast stage movements and even the highly-polished floor surface that allows characters to appear to glide in their long costumes. But the best-known facet of Noh theater, to Westerns like most of us reading? The masks.

Masks were part of the Japanese theater tradition as far back as the early 7th century, starting with the now-defunct gigaku and introduced during the 20th year of Empress Suiko’s reign, and survived through the centuries. The Noh mask stems from the form’s all-male cast, necessitating anyone playing a woman, god, child, demon or ghost, pretty much everyone who isn’t a male in their ‘30s, to cover their face. Masks not only show what you want others to see, but hides what you don’t.

In the world of cars, masks are important as well. There’s no other way to explain the continued success of Mitsuoka, coachbuilders who try to turn Nissan Marches into early ‘60s Jaguar sedans, Nissan Cedrics into ersatz Rolls Royce Silver Shadows, and Mazda MX5s into swept-fender Jaguar XK roadsters from the mid-‘50s by switching a new front end (and sometimes other body panels) and plush interiors onto a perfectly good, existing, built car.

We bring this up because... well, look at this car. What is it? How old is it? It belongs to Sean Shokouh of JDMPalace in Folsom, CA and although it’s a fresh build, it’s a fresh build intending to look vintage. The Miata is old enough to be considered old school—summer of ‘89 puts it at 23 years-old, and seems older still when you realize the car it was modeled after—the Lotus Elan, which showed up in 1961. And enough time has passed that we all know the whole hairdressermobile image is so 1993. But the nose? That front end is serious vintage style: the exposed P700 headlamps, the open oval-mouth intake. It’s homage to a character type, something like a ’64 Ferrari 250GT Lusso Berlinetta, but it’s meant to be eye-flatteningly quick and dead sexy, whatever it is. It is not the face that this car was born with. It is...a mask.

http://image.superstreetonline.com/f/features/sstp_1209_1996_mazda_miata/38578376+w640/sstp-1209-03+1996-mazda-miata+full-view.jpg

And so we come full circle, with so many nods to the past it looks more like headbanging. Is carbuilding (on this advanced level, anyway) not theater? Are not theater events and the capabilities of a particular car both referred to as performance? And is it therefore any surprise at all that cars are occasionally given masks as well?

Traditional Noh masks are very light carved from blocks of Japanese cypress or hinoki, then given a base of crushed seashell and glue, which is finished with detail-painting in such a way that lighting and a tilt of the head can express a variety of emotions. Similarly, the Pit Crew Racing nose is a boutique outfit making Miata noses in Japan. It’s made from fiberglass-reinforced plastic and, like the Noh face coverings, it too is very light.

But the disguise goes beyond the mask: the costuming plays a role as well. Owner Shokouh reveals that the idea behind making a Miata that looks nothing like a Miata: it started with the roof. “The theme started as the vintage-look,” he tells us, “and then I wanted to have a little of both vintage and new—especially after I found the hardtop in Japan. Only five were made by the company in the mid-‘90s, and they’re no longer in business. This is the last one, and I picked it up from Top Secret in Japan.”

From there, his game plan shifted. “My goal was to make a car which no one could recognize. I think the only giveaway is the door handles. The trunk is made by Garage Hundred One who is very popular around the Miata racing circuit. This one was specially made to accept the locking mechanism, and is the third one they have built so far,” Sean explains. Similarly, the rockers, the taillight treatment with a single round light replacing the Miata’s standard-issue flush cluster, the flush rear treatment that eliminates the bumper area, the Garage Vary hood...even the wheels, huge though they look, are fifteens all around. Never mind the camber angles: bigger wheels have been crammed into smaller spaces. All different pieces, all meant to give a Miata a splash of individuality, but together creating a far larger whole. It reminds us of the Noh theater tradition of rehearsals: do it once. (“One chance, one meeting,” the saying goes.) This way, a more organic whole is created, though the result is hardly improvised.

http://image.superstreetonline.com/f/features/sstp_1209_1996_mazda_miata/42600327+w640/sstp-1209-04+1996-mazda-miata+interior.jpg

And rather than covering it all in the latest iridescent day-glo flip-flop chromatragic hue, Shokouh opted for basic black. Think he wussed out? Hardly: black is about impossible to make look good and right to the naked eye, much less in pictures. Much like a theater in the round, it shows everything, and hides nothing. A two-stage PPG basecoat/clearcoat with five layers of clear come as close as a black car can come to glowing, and with the aftermarket bits make it look all-of-a-piece. Five layers of clear? “It was my daily driver for a while,” Shokouh says. The interior, meanwhile, is remarkable for the relative restraint and lack of any single component standing out; all work together to create a harmonious whole.

And look at the result. You’d be hard-pressed to ID it as a Miata right off the bat, but it takes that car’s basics—lightweight, rear-drive twin-cam fun and creates a whole vintage-style backstory for it. It’s a story that practically tells itself with one masked actor playing the titular role. The JDMPalace Miata project is not just theater. It’s (a) play.

We shot Sean’s Miata with a pretty stock engine bay but ITBs and a turbo are on the way.

Not just the front end, here is an über rare Pit Crew Racing center-exit exhaust.

This is stuff only the Old School Japanese fans can truly appreciate, most of those parts are impossible to find these days. Nice job on this photo shoot Sean! This is another well thought out build, wondering if we will see this at the Japanese Classic Car Show this weekend in Cali? It sure would be a head turner!

Thanks for the love everyone, In my vision the car is not finished yet, but at the same time I'm not sure If I want to change her much. I have everything to finish the engine bay. I think I'm going to save my turbo parts for another project and just finish her with ITBs.

Randy, I don't think they actually have class for Miata. I was planning to take two of my old schools which I have been working on, but not sure if It's going to happen this year.

IRTBs would really fit the character of the car. IRTB + turbo? Sure, that would be fun too. But ITB by itself would be more than enough.

If you ever wanted to swap out those red gauges, I know a guy who can make something cool. :)

wuh? No class for Miata? some of the first gens are already over 20 years old? How old do the cars have to be?

Adam, Thanks I'll hit you up for sure. Yep The original 1.8 is still in pretty good shape. I got a built motor, 6 speed, 3.6 geared 2way LSD Rear end, AEM, and rest of the goodies to finish the build. The only thing I have been waiting is stupid turbo which has been on back order for over 8 months now.

That's why after some thinking, I decided to start a new functional project with all of the spare parts I got. Put the Turbo motor in there and install the ITBs on this one.

Randy, yep no Miata yet. They added AE86 for this year so I'm sure Miata is next in line.

I know, not only that but also I didn't want to do a feature till I'm done with her. But they said they want to do the shoot while the car was down in So Cal, and when I'm done with the engine bay they post the feature. Then I get a call that they want to go with the feature and they need the spec sheet so I couldn't really say no at that time.

What the heck is going on with that interior? Checkerboard floor mats, aluminum, square quilted covered gauge hood and a gloss black steering wheel...So many different materials and textures jumbled together.

Everyone's ideas will be different in the way we build up our cars, I like Sean, will pray to the modification Gods for plenty of hate. :toomuch:

^ Phat, I'm not hating. But I am curious as to why he threw all those certain parts together.

The exterior is pretty well executed and everything ties together nicely. Then you open the door...And it's like he couldn't decide what material to go with. Which is very surprising considering how cohesive the outside is.

Do you have magazines lining up to feature your car?

It looks incredible to me. Very cohesive. I mean, even those metal eyeball vents look at home, and I've NEVER seen a car where those looked "right" in. It's an amazing interior.

The only thing that looks a bit off, in my opinion only, are the red gauges and modern head unit. And those are minor details.

I have a DD beater, he has an OTT show car. Just because I have a differing opinion doesn't mean you have to attack me. (fyi, I don't read import rags, so features don't mean much to me)

I just took a look at the first page again and I have to disagree. Is it more restrained than most show cars? Probably. But that doesn't mean make it vintage or cohesive

I consider your car to be tastefully modified and more cohesive. Oldcafe from the UK has a wonderfully vintage style interior and is a great example of a cohesive interior. A bunch of rare parts thrown together doesn't make me fap just because they're rare.

I still think all the different materials don't particularly mesh well. But YMMV.

When did I attack you? I can't read my last post back to myself in any way that makes it sound like an attack. Sorry to offend?

One thing is for sure, it's a good car that can polarize opinions. Cars that everyone says "yeah, that's nice" rarely are worth the rubber they're rolling on.

Yes the car was actually featured in September issue of Super Street.

About the interior, It has a lot my own personal touches and what I like. The Steering wheel; I fell in love with the feel and design back in 04, and pretty much I run it in every car I want to go with aftermarket steering wheel (I have it on 4 of my cars). The hood; it matches the door panels and to me it's enough to not make the car look like a tissue box. The floor mats; they were the only ones I could find at the time since the red/black were on back order to match the gauges. The head unit; I actually have a decent sound system in the car, amp inside the trunk, 8" sub between the seats, components inside the doors and rear satellite speakers right by my ears :) so I needed a head unit I can use my iPhone and actually sound good, don't forget this was my daily up to couple of months ago. The gauges; I wanted something a little different. I have always liked the idea of wild gauge colors in super cars so I thought why not so I had to special order the gauges from AWD.

This project started out of no where. I had no intention to build this car and all I wanted to slam her and be done. It started growing so fast I didn't even know when it got here. I actually ended up getting another back up car since this one was getting to the point I couldn't drive it or it was just not comfortable for long drives. Since the start with the slammed look, the car was out of old school category right away. So I wanted to build a car if you see it in the street you couldn't tell what you are looking at. I almost thought about shaving the door handles since they are pretty much the only quick give a ways. But I actually love the handles. All of the interior pieces to some point have been touched to blend in with the satin look of center console since it was my main piece. I had to take the chrome off the eyeballs, and get them in satin finish, I made the SS shifter and shift knob from scratch, make my panels out of stainless and go on ...

The car is to the point that either you really love it or you just going to hate it. I'm cool either way since I build every car I own to my own taste, either something I have always wanted or something I have seen on some other car and I'll try to make it better. I really liked how everything on this car came together. All the parts are from different manufactures, inside or out so I'm really happy how I was able to make them work in my own vision. Thanks again for people who made these online communities since I have to admit, without Forums this car wouldn't be here.

It had nothing to do with me or my car. Just the fact that I don't have magazines lining up to feature my car doesn't minimize my opinion in any way whatsoever.

The way you came out with that made it seem like you had to have a bitching car to critique any part of the car.

I never said it was a bad car. Too many people build show cars just by throwing as many rare parts into it as possible or modifying things for the sake of modifying. That's how I felt about the interior.

It's almost like the same feeling when you open up an engine bay and see 5 different colors. Maybe it works better in person. It certainly works for the owner. But I don't have to have a feature car to believe otherwise.

This miata is made by a real enthusiast, with a good seletion of rare parts, but personally I do not see a specific line
i think that the Pit Crew conversion works only with the complete kit, with only the front end, the rears seems too imbalanceed even if you mount the GV panel, Zoom rear light or the Trap light, in fact the best PC are the democar and mitycal "creamy" japanese
In this case the combination of the P700 with eyelids, the Trap lip,and the BBS, remember me an old Karman-Ghia coupè with the wheels and the spoiler of an old Golf MK1, too german style
The rear end with Zerbino HT, short bumper and Trap light has something of gothic, the interior have a good potential, the Nielex console and the seats are the best bits, but the steering wheel, gear lever and the german eyeball are terrible
I repeat, the car has many valuable pieces, and I hope that nobody is offended by my comments, I just think that with some modifications, could become one of the best Miata

Dislikes: Wheel setup, the fact you want to turbo it. I say IRTBS or carbs for this machine.

Car is looking very nice. I remember when you first showed up to the Vacaville meet. It was crazy watching a car that low roll through.
