Mazda Concept Vehicles at SEMA 2012 :
Miata Super25 & Special Edition CX-5's

Derek Jenkins, the Director of Design for Mazda North America, takes us on a tour of the Mazda Booth during SEMA 2012. Let's take a look at the cars that have been designed for the show.

The Mazda Super25 is a supercharged 20th anniversary MX-5 concept. This car is poised to take part in the 25-hour endurance race at Thunder Hill. Basically it is a Spec Miata Hardtop with a full roll cage. The rims are a limited edition Volk TE-37 wheel out of Japan. Upfront is a custom light pod to help illuminate the track at night. The 2013 MX-5 has a new more aggressive fascia along with a lower spoiler. On the inside there is a custom suede Sparco race seat with 5-point harness and a Sparco steering wheel. The MX-5 is an already great track car to start with, Mazda just wanted to show that this car can compete in a major endurance race with little modification.

In addition to the Mazda Super25, there are 3 special editions of the CX-5 crossover.

The first one is called the CX-5 180. The idea behind this concept is that in southern California you could go surfing in the morning and skiing in the evening. This is played out in the graphics package that shows a topographical map of Big Bear on one side and a map of Point Dume on the other side. The graphic package plays out on the inside along with denim blue leather seating surfaces with contrasting stitching.

The Mazda CX-5 Dempsey was designed for Patrick Dempsey. This model is actually a turbo diesel CX-5 imported from Germany. Patrick is into road bikes and the CX-5 has everything a rider could ask for. The graphic theme on the crossover is based on a custom road bike featuring matte black, graphite gray, and fluorescent red. The 20-inch wheels look great and the Thule cargo box on top provides a nice amount of utility. The interior was overhauled to match the exterior.

Lastly we have the Mazda CX-5 Urban. The basic idea here was to take inspiration from a kind of harsh urban environment and implement them into the design scheme. You can see the many facets of design thanks to the paintwork. The faceted work contrasts the lines of the CX-5. The wheels are sized 22-inch wrapped in 295-series tires with widened fender extensions. The finished product exudes a very stealthy and aggressive feel.
