I'd like to start off by saying Happy New Year to everyone.

I finally have a neat build thread, sorta. Though I'm gonna have to warn you, once I get past all the old stuff, I will be lacking new content for a while till I save up enough for more parts.

Sometime during the middle of 2012, I decided I wanted to do a complete exterior makeover on Kayla. She’s been hurt/damaged quite a bit during the last 3 years I've had her. So it’s that time to fix her up to put a smile on my face.

I purchased my 96 M Edition (Starlight Mica Blue) back in December of '08 after totaling my first Miata, heh. I bought this beauty off of my step brothers co-worker. Shit was PRESTENE. Bone stock with an St May exhaust, Simpson Design tail lights, and AGX/H&R combo. What a cool guy, right? Back then, I thought to myself, "The hell is up with these tail lights and exhaust? Fuckin ugly". But I am so damn glad that I have learned about them and appreciated those parts. I still have the St. May, btw. Anybody wanna buy it?

Also, please excuse all the different edits throughout the thread. My ugly photography has changed a lot throughout the years.

The very first thing I did was swap over my Buddyclub seat, steering wheel setup and shift knob/shifter extender from my old Civic/first Miata. All was a must. As you all know, the factory NA Miata steering wheel is hideous. If you enjoy the look of them... eat a wiener. A few months after I bought Kayla, my brother brought my old Miata back to life and used that as his daily. Little by little, I kept swapping more parts over from the old to new.

Towards the end of March '09, what I thought had come to an end of Kayla happened. My brother and I had switched cars for the day because his car wasn't running healthy and I only had to drive 5 mins to school while he had to drive 45 to work. Being in a rush as he always is, he ran out of gas a couple blocks from work on a hill. After calling his co-worker for assistance, this dumbass in an older Camaro thought he could speed up and cut off another car to avoid my brother. He failed at doing so and rammed into the back of Kayla real hard. Fucker didn't even speak English and tried to offer my brother $20. After my brother shot down his offer and asked for all the necessary insurance information, the damn immigrant (don't be offended, please) jumped back in the car and took off. Wow... yeah. Police report was filed but of course, nothing happened and they never got caught. The damage to Kayla was pretty severe. To my surprise, she still drove straight and turned fine.

After dealing with my insurance, Kayla obviously got totaled and I bought her back. Weeks went by and I decided to keep her and take her to a frame shop to get the rear pulled. A friend of mine suggested a place in Montclair called State Frame. It's own by a dad and his son. Very nice people and they do great work. I dropped my car off the next day after getting an estimate and waited about a week when I got a call from the shop saying my car was ready. I was super excited but nervous at the same time when my friend was driving me to pick up my car. As we neared our destination, I let out a breath of relief when I saw how well they pulled my frame. I wish I took more photos of the after.

I went to YLM junkyard in Irwindale; they had a bunch of Miata's. I really hoped they had a junked Starlight Mica blue Miata with a fresh rear bumper. But I knew there wasn't going to be one. I had a choice of a white bumper and a Montego blue bumper. I decided on the Montego blue for it was a better match in color than the white. I also got my hands on a black finish panel, too.

Me too. Thanks.

A little after the rear end accident, I swapped over my RPF1's with 20mm spacers and sold the 6UL's later on down the road. Around January or February of 2010, the best deal in my life happened. I bought a hardtop for $300. It was such a risky purchase because I was still jobless at the time and I was left with $100 in my bank after the purchase. I reallyyyyy wanted it.

Sits way too low and will look funny with my cut rear bumper. And I have a plan for a new exhaust setup.

Fast forward to December of 2010, Kayla was involved in another accident. This one was a stupid accident and I wish it never ever ever ever happened. My front end was perfect before. You know how 90% of Miata's have the retarded dip in the bumper or misaligned headlight lids that won't sit 100% even no matter how many times you adjust it? Mine had none of that problem. I was driving down a street at night when I noticed an object bouncing towards me from the opposing traffic. The object was flying towards me so fast I couldn't make out what it was until the very last min. It was a fucking wheel! By the time it had registered into my head, there was a car to my left and a curb to my right. I had no choice but to slam on my brakes and yell "Oh shitttt!". The wheel slammed into my front bumper and bounced over a high school fence and disappeared into the night. My passenger air bag deployed, smashed the front windshield and smacked my passenger in the face real good. Lol. He was fine, btw. I filed another police report and went through insurance with the guy who's wheel hit me. My car was deemed a total lost again. Went through the bullshit of buying her back and called a mobile windshield service company to replace the broken windshield on Christmas Eve.

Where the wheel bounced off. Underneath the bumper skin, the support beam was super fucked up.

Misaligned my perfect front end fitment. You can also sorta see the hood bent up top towards the front.

Fast forward to April of 2011. My motor felt very weak and blew out tons of smoke. Luckily, I was able to land a job back in February of 2011 and started buying parts here and there. My friends dad was kind enough to let me store Kayla in their backyard. On my days off, I drove to their house to work on my car. One of the first thing I did was a compression test. Numbers were silly. If memory serves me right, cylinder 1 was at 120, cylinder 2 at 140, cylinder 3 at 60 and cylinder 4 at 130. My car was out of commission for 4 months. Because my job was only a part time job, I couldn't buy what I needed fast. I hit up Steve before he started getting serious with Project-G and asked if he had a spare motor for sale. Low and behold, he did! I went to check it out and bought it the next week. Thanks again, Steve! Parts were slowing coming together and I was itching to start the swap. I had also hit up Tig to help me source OEM parts from a Mazda dealership his friend works at.

Trailering Kayla up to my friends house.

I forgot when, but I had also cut my rear bumper. And I borrowed wheels from Paul and Cody while my car was down. Thanks again, guys! <3

With the money I sold the RPF1's, I ordered a set of Grid V's for temporary use. Sandblasted them the same day I got them and dropped them off to get powdercoated.

But at this point, I had a feeling my friends dad was beginning to get annoyed with my car still being in his backyard. Lol. I called Manny and asked if he would be willing to help me drop my motor back in so I could get Kayla out of there. Thanks again for the help, Manny! Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures of the motor install.

Picked up my tires from Online Tires in Cypress and got them mounted the same day.

Put my steering wheel back in. And I forgot to mention I had ordered a T3 extended hub and bought a DDM Works gauge panel from a member on here.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7070/6860452618_0bd8b59346_c.jpg

The next day, I went back to connect all the plugs and hoses. Eager to start her up, I didn't slow down to think while buttoning everything back up. The car wouldn't start and I was stumped. A few hours of search engine on CR and Google, I found a thread with a guy that had the similar problem I was having. Turns out I swapped the fuel lines on backwards towards the front side of the passenger. Car started right up after I switched the lines. I had the biggest smile on my face.

The night I brought her home.

Not much has happened to Kayla for a little while. Just drove her how she was after the engine replacement. Fast forward to November of 2011; I picked up a second job unexpectedly and was working 7 days a week. You may think I was making good money. But really, the total amount I got paid a month was like working one full time job.

A month or two into the 2nd job, another STUPID accident happened to Kayla. But what's odd was, I wasn't mad or sad about it. I just shrugged when it happened and told myself it was a good excuse to do an exterior makeover.

One day during work, my brother was super sick (we work at the same place) and couldn't work. The whole day he slept in the break room. At the end of the night, I left my car at work inside the shop and took his car instead since it was less harsh of a ride. I didn't want him throwing up in my car. Lol. The next morning, one of the techs moved my car out from the shop and parked it in the back where we park our customers cars. I have remote start on my car (now you know where this story is going). At the end of my day shift, I remote started my car to let it warm up while I cleaned up my desk. I walk to the back and see my car up against the edge of the bay door wall. *facepalm* At this point, it was no ones fault. I couldn't put the blame on the tech that moved my car because I didn't tell him I have remote start and to not leave it in first (I didn't install the neutral safety). Though I would say he should have at least put the e-brake up. That might have helped the car from launching forward. I'm just super glad my car didn't hit any GT-R's or Lambo's. O_o The accident damaged my passenger fender, bumper, front plate, and buckled the frame.

Thanks guys!

It's a wing party over here. I believe sometime early to mid 2012, I bought Cody's (coupeloop) old trunk and wing setup and slapped it on my car the same day. For those wondering, end plates and cables are in the works with Rob (ryokurob). So don't yell at me for not having them!

Shortly after I had purchased the wing as well as a few other things (will be mentioned later on in the build), I had a friend of mine help me pull my damaged frame (the time I auto-started and hit a wall). At the same time, I also took the time to repair my GV lip, somewhat.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8235/8385271471_060eea4dbb_c.jpg

The damage in the middle was from when I got hit by the flying wheel. -___-

As most of you know, Adam (revlimiter) hosted his Sharksgiving sale back in November last year for his custom gauge faces. I've always wanted one but felt the money could be used on something else. When Adam advertised his Sharksgiving prices to public, I immediately contacted him and sent money to him without thinking twice.

Adam's customer service is GREAT. Emails were responded very quickly and questions were answered clearly. With all the orders he was receiving, I knew for sure I was going to have to wait a week or 2 to get them made. To my surprise, 3 days later, Adam emails me saying my gauges were done. He even went as far as confessing to me that my gauges would have been finished the previous day, but the cutting machine ate the gauges so he had to start over again. It's awesome to have a seller give you every bit of detail about your order from start to finish. A few days later, the gauges arrived to me and I set it aside to collect dust.

Fast forward to today, I finally had a free day where I felt productive and decided to man up and change out the faces.

How I received the gauges.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8072/8440723992_46fe946ed3_c.jpg

Opened it up to see how the packaging was; it was A+.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8230/8439632853_95571f45e4_c.jpg

Everything opened up.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8463/8439632769_9a116617a1_c.jpg

Then noticed this little note <3

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8360/8439632703_2fe1f51b8b_c.jpg

A very well written tip form and some Revlimiter stickers.

Random Domo's. Lol.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8330/8440723756_603733579b_c.jpg

Started taking off what I needed in order to get to the cluster. Was super scared I was going to break the cluster hood. I was able to breathe again when it came off without any problems.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8353/8440720024_4f7759bf1f_c.jpg

Out you go, ugly M-Edition cluster!

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8078/8439628933_1247e03ea6_c.jpg

Although the cluster hood didn't break on me, something else had to. I was wiping away dust and dirt from inside when a bottom tab for the cluster hood snapped off without any pressure on it. I was sad.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8086/8440719798_5b458d70c7_c.jpg

I brought the cluster into my room to start the surgery.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8056/8440719984_4b04c175f8_c.jpg

I was scared of breaking these needles. Thank God for those neat little blue tools that came with the gauge faces.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8328/8439628887_431d109d58_c.jpg

This needle target practice was funny.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8072/8439628853_0b52ce1f15_c.jpg

Another scary moment was breaking this casing for faces not using the stock 7 o'clock needle position. It's needed to allow light to hit the bottom of the RPM gauge face. I could have done a better job, but I didn't have any needle nose pliers as suggested in the instructions.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8501/8440719934_ba8ce9b031_c.jpg

The scariest task was the needle stopper. Thank God there were only 2 to do. I felt like my hands were shaking x10 more than they should have been during this process and I was sweating real good. I did fuck up on one needle (you can see it in the pictures, it's crocked). But I won't let it bother me too much.

Hi guyysss,

Two weeks ago, I was informed by my co-worker that Buddy Club is bringing their Spec II exhaust back for NA Miata's. They asked if I wanted to let them use my car for a quick test fit; I gladly obliged. I've always been a fan of their Spec II exhausts back in my Honda days. So I was pretty excited when I heard the new news. The test fit was spot on and is easiest to install in one piece due to the slip joint design.

"A racing spec muffler is a light weight and highly efficient muffler that is made to perform for circuit run. In its street version, to optimize torque in the low to mid speed range, it is equipped with an efficient middle silencer (resonator). Racing Spec Muffler were designed for high performance as well as meeting sound level standards. With its deep throaty tone, it echo's it racing linage.

Spec II is a specially designed system for competition use only. Its simple straight thru design creates an increase of exhaust gas velocity in order to improve efficiency. The middle silencer (resonator) on the main pipe is designed to maintain torque in the low to mid speed range."

Outter: 60mm
Inner: 57mm
Tip: 75mm
Weight: 13 lbs
MSRP: $599
Availability: 8-9 weeks

Here is a quick sound clip of the exhaust on the day of the test fit. Please note that the test fit was done missing a gasket and slip joint springs. I now have the missing parts installed on the car (not in/during video). Also, don't worry about all the smoke. I have a pretty bad piston ring. Burning a lottt of oil. Nothing to do with the exhaust. Lol.

Lol, thanks guys!

How soon before we see these on the car?!?!!!!!

I'm hoping to have the fronts mocked up sometime this week/weekend when I have free time.

I have all 4 wheels. But I was only able to obtain a pair of tires in this size locally. Everywhere else is backordered.

Since the cats out of the bag on FB, here's a shot Mike took tonight. I had originally wanted to install them myself so I could gain experience. But after fitting the fronts on a few weeks ago, I decided I'd let Mike do the rears considering he's done it many times and I didn't want them crooked. Lol.

Your car looks so functional. Just wondering if you track a lot or if that is just the look you were going for?

How she currently sits. Still LOTS to do to get it where it'll satisfy me until paint day.

Still lots to do that I still haven't done, yet. I'm hoping to pick up a daily beater this weekend so I can 100% focus on Kayla without having to worry about things that could happen on the road.

You need to see the wheel color in person to really appreciate them, they have a deep metallic sheen to them, almost like a rich butterscotch! Looks delicious!

Looking to buy new-to-me front lower control arms to replace my bent arms and pop these bushings in at the same time on the upper. Very slow progress from here on out.

Holy crap. Been a long time. Lol. Absolutely NOTHING has changed with the Miata. Logged on for the first time in FOREVER to hopefully gain some motivation. Sorry to disappoint everyone with no new changes!
