After being kinda lazy and irritated about my LSD, finally got my Revlimiter gauges done. I've got to admit, the oil pressure gauge was the most difficult. I found that backing off the needle just a tad will let it correctly; press it on all the way and the needle will "stick". While I was at it, painted the needles and put on the AWD needle caps I got from Rspeed two years ago. =)

I also noticed that with the blue bulb condoms, it's actually quite dim, enough that the needles barely, if at all, illuminate. So I just took the condos off. Probably will get LEDs to solve that problem.

Hopefully it will look like the avatar image at some point this year. I've just done the centre console cover, the rest is the standard stuff that came with the car almost 25 years ago.

Today was the 3 year anniversary of ownership of my car. Anyway, I lubed up all the door hinges and hood hinges, hosed down the passenger side of the engine compartment as the overflow hose somehow came off of the coolant overflow tank and blew coolant all over the place, then proceeded to give the ole' girl a good bath as it's been well over 6 months since I washed her last. And wouldn't you know it, a couple hours later we just happened to have a big, nasty thunderstorm come rolling through and dirty the whole car back up again. Son of a...

Removed my stock rad and upper rad hose, which is a pain because of my reroute. Then started trying to clean up the passenger side of the engine bay because the wires turned into a big mess last time i put the motor in. Very tempted to do a tuck in my engine bay and see just how much room I can get in there.

Was going to do some interior work but got distracted by the mess of wiring.

OK, so there has been something that has been bothering me a little over a year now. The JASS Performance low-pros are great. They look good and provide better than stock light output. But... the surrounds that come with them have been catching/binding on the rubber flaps in front of the headlights. Which, I have no idea what their actual name is, so that's what I've been calling them. So, I was going to try to get an extra set of the rubber flaps to trim and keep my stock flaps in case I ever needed to go back to stock. Well, I just couldn't take it any more. So I got to work.

http://i.imgur.com/yFecn7M.jpg

Here's what was happening and it had been doing so for a year. I just put up with it. But the noise it made had finally drove me to the breaking point that something had to be done. This is unsightly and makes a horrible noise as if something in your great new lights is breaking.

http://i.imgur.com/En0y8qz.jpg

Here I've removed the driver's side flap. They are held in by small push type clips. I was able to get my hand underneath and pinch the clips to push them out.

Before I started putting my hands in a possibly dangerous place, I removed the pop-up fuse in the fuse box by the wiper motor. It's listed as Retractor and is a 30 Amp fuse. I also had to unplg the connecter to the wiper motor to open the fuse box lid enough to get to the fuse.

http://i.imgur.com/hdzi9RN.jpg

Here is the piece that the headlights are catching on. You can actually see where the JASS surrounds have been rubbing against the flap in the left corner.

http://i.imgur.com/ovS5Ksv.jpg

I remember these little clips being mint at one point. All of the binding of the flaps must have broken them a bit. Though they are delicate as the years of sitting below hot lights makes them brittle. You can see what You've got to pinch to get them out.

http://i.imgur.com/6RCCEhN.jpg

I did a bit of eyeballing on this. I marked where I needed to remove some material with a sharpie then started cutting with a razor blade and pair of small scissors. I used a dremel tool to round the corners. No reason this can't look somewhat OEM.

http://i.imgur.com/Ui8PPDN.jpg

Had to do a bit of extra trimming on the other side. Remember, cut a little at a time and test fit. If you need to remove more, no big deal, if you have cut too much... well, not much to be done.

http://i.imgur.com/U54claL.jpg

Once I had done one, I flipped it over and traced what was removed from one side to the other. Still had to take a little more out of one corner of the other flap. Also pictured are the aforementioned tools used to do this.

http://i.imgur.com/ZhOsl2o.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/ddwUgdL.jpg

I wasn't sure if this was going to be enough. But after plugging everything back up and operating the pop-ups a few times, no more rubber flap binding! No more horrible noises!

Here's some videos of the lights in action after this small bit of trimming.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hxg-6Z-m_MI

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G4UyPKWd4jc

Hopefully this is helpful to others who have the JASS lights and may have this problem.

If anyone is wondering why I didn't just remove the flaps and be done there, well, that is just lazy. And it doesn't look as nice either.

http://i.imgur.com/lkDr7tA.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/s6JyZc8.jpg

I like the way it looks, but I'm having to cheat to make it work. The rear bow on my top is completely wrapped by the top material. So I can't use the 3rd bow channel of the headliner as intended. Instead it's being pulled against and up by the rollbar. I'm going to run it for a little bit, see how it does. Also, instead of velcro (which I'm still unsure how that would hold the front of the headliner in place) I've tucked it into the rubber finishing piece up front. Everything seems to be snug staying in place. Time will tell if this stays with Betty.

I was planning on just replacing the head gasket but now I may do a full tear down and port it and get it planed. Do I patch the 1.6 back together as I rebuild the spare 1.8 I've got, or do I go ahead and clean up the 1.6 so I can sell it for more later? Decisions, decisions.

finally drove the car for the first time in several months, so i can pass my last emissions test (which i did). got home from work and put in the LED "bulbs" in the gauge cluster and my oh my, do they look great. i'll get some pictures soon but the blue color they give off, while nice, washes out the red paint on the needles because they're so much brighter than stock. i can still see the needles, but it's too bad it's not a bright red as it usually is.

plan for tomorrow, install my new shift knob before work and feel what it's like =)

I made a huge suspension update which altered the ride height and the stiffness dramatically!

.... by going from 15psi to 30psi in the tires ;)

As mundane as putting air in your tires is, it made my 97 ride like crap. Prolly gonna cut back to half that tonight. The fun roads here are too rough in spots to have go kart suspension(see:none) and super hard tires :)

If you are looking for resale value, I'm not sure it would raise your total asking price by the total cost of the porting, planing, polishing (why not), and bearings (why not). Unless, of course, you can do all that yourself or at a good buddy discount...

Yes. I am going to head to a local Pick & Pull to see if the three Miatas they had last Fall made it through the Winter. And if so... I'll see if they have a decent black dash pad. If not, I'll grab the one out of my Red '91, it's in great condition.

Moved the passenger headrest speakers to the driver side since both ds speakers were blown from PO. I understand that pretty much any 3" speaker can work, but I can't find much for selection under 3.5". My old standby Crutchfield apparently doesn't know my car even has headrest speakers :(
Anybody recommend good replacements? Hoping to spend under 50 bucks for a pair unless you can convince my wife... ;)

Also started building a wind blocker out of plexiglass but apparently didn't get the score it deep enough and cracked the hell out of it. Oh, well time to start over and maybe pull the wallet out to buy the right tool instead of a box cutter.

How did the install go with the leather gauge hood? I've thinking of getting one myself but wasn't sure if i could get it to look as good as yours!

Malibu Q

So I took the drivers seat out of my car today so I could work out how to take it apart. After it all went back together I wrote the following disassembly instructions:

3 Screws per seat: Star screwdriver
2 Bolts per seat: 14 mm spanner

On the console side, remove the central screw.
On the door side, remove the screw from the centre of the circle.
Bend the top down, expose and remove the screw holding the seat back plastic cover.
Remove the cover by sliding upwards.
This exposes two bolts which require removal.

I emailed the request to some sellers of seats on eBay UK that I would buy their seats if they could disassemble them for shipping.
One has replied so now I'm buying these. They were the cheapest ones too :)

I purchased this from eBay and it is a British piece, however, it's about 5 years old... I was always nervous about messing up the install. Truth be told, I over thought the installation. It was pretty easy. I used the spray adhesive (Super 77) instead of rubber cement. I also took my time. I stretched the leather out over the hood for a couple days... taking it on and off (before glue) so I could get used to how it felt, and lined up. It's pretty straight forward if you take your time.

Yep. Thinking about it, even though so many got in on it, the GV tails are still pretty rare when you get down to it. Seems like everyone has them, but the reality is that, what, maybe 100 or so Miatas have them? Say we're being generous with the production of the GV kit, say 250. The chances of seeing them in the wild is pretty unlikely unless you are at an event or otherwise highly Miata populated area.

I was also thinking earlier that most people unfamiliar with Miatas wouldn't know the difference/take notice of the fact that the GV kit isn't stock. That only those that are in the know get it. I mean, if something is made and fits well enough, it doesn't look out of place to most. I was telling this to someone I know and they said all that mattered was that it made me happy. And it does. I keep finding myself walking out to the garage just to look at the GV tails.

Last week, I had the car rust checked. A few days later I had a short day of school and I was off work, so I decided to give him some loving. I started out by changing the door moldings. (Mazda dealer sold both of them to me for 130$ with tax)

The right side was pretty horrible.

http://i.imgur.com/bB75IDw.jpg

Last year I had some trouble with the sewing that holds the window, and it was starting to rip slowly again, so I attacked that next. I should probably take the time to figure out where the old sews gave out and tie them properly, but there's so many ends flying from everywhere I couldn't be bothered.
http://i.imgur.com/FPru4af.jpg

Then I sowed my shifter scrotum back on, because why not?
http://i.imgur.com/K7WKKSc.jpg

I then took him out for a ride, on my way to the car wash, when my radiator opened up like a tuna can. What an ungrateful little shit. Anyways, I had it repaired and got it back today. I'm satisfied with the new moldings and the mechanic's job. All is well in the end.

Grounded the fan as the fan switch had decided to give up. Also found that the Heimholtz-resonator was out of place, grinding against the belts. So we removed that. Also found a power steering fluid leak and a wonky fuel-tube. My cousins car in the front. Quite awesome piece of kit, getting some flare-action soon!

Next up will be removal of that horrible plasti dip. I'll try some WD-40 and a rug, as it comes of in microscopical pieces. That procedure might even involving washing the car :3:

Yesterday I purchased a suction cup camera mound and was attempting to mound it on the inside of the windshield. I got it stuck okay, but I couldn't get the Digital camera to point out level so I tried adding the extended arm, which required me to unscrew an allen locking bolt. I dropped the allen tool and it landed under the drivers seat between the rails and drive tunnel. I just recently purchased 2014 MX-5 so everything is pristine. I can't tell you how many times I've had to retrive at tool, or other object from under a seat. With my left hand I grabbed the allen wrench and as I pulled out my hand I cut the back of my hand on the razor sharp edge of the seat rail, nicking a blood vessel. When I saw my hand pumping blood in little squirts all over the plastic floor mats I was upset at myself for spilling my blood on the floor of my brand new Miata. I went to the ER because I could stop bleeding where they super glue the ¼ inch cut closed. When they asked who it happened I told the ER Doc, my Miata bite me!

Thats what my NC did to me.

its not scratched its hand machined... thats what I tell myself.

I fitted a duel feed fuel rail is preparation for boost and only 2 things went wrong! One fuel hose had a leak so when I turned the car over I had a nice jet of fuel aimed right up into the air not the end of the world as all I had to do was chop off 2.5cm's of hose. Looking at the marks the hole was made when me and the past owner pulled the hose off. Oh but the 2nd f**k up was totally on me... I stepped on and snapped the PCV valve so now I'm stuck till I can get another. I did start the car just by blocking the hose and all seemed fine but I wont be driving with oil vapor wafting around the car.

The single Borla came in Friday. Took all of 20 minutes to put it on. Perfect fit. Took it for a drive and as I've read, through tone deepens as it warms up. It sounds like a "proper" roadsters now! Moderately aggressive but not enough to be annoying to the outside world. Purrrrfect!

Changed the oil yesterday. I was in a bit of a rush since I had to leave for dinner about an hour and a half after I started the oil change. Normally that would be plenty of time, but the garage is a mess and I had to clear a space to get the car half in and then my jack doesn't fit under the car...needless to say it took a while to get the car in the air.

So I drained the oil, changed the filter, and then added fresh oil....except I missed a step! I forgot to put the drain bolt back in! That's what I get for being in a hurry! I felt like such an idiot!

I dont have pics of clutch swap but I do have pics of the wheel. The silver piece on side of wheel is not a turning knob its the horn button just putt on the side of wheel to show that center of wheel is not worn out.

Installed Teflon window guides. The original guides had disintegrated completely. Also cleaned and re lubed the tracks. Working like a new car now
