2002 license plate light stays on?

I just bought a 2002 miata and the license plate lights stay on. They are unplugged right now but what would cause the problem and how to fix it??

Close the trunk.

Could be that the switch inside the truck panel is stuck. The switch itself is located on the latch system and is behind it. Could be that your missing a screw that holds it in place or it loose and its out of adjustment.
