View Full Version : HKS VPC + SAFC2 + 20V ITB = Instant Hell

Decided to make this for kicks..and as a update page that might help or DETER someone to this setup one day.

****i'm not an idiot..just a cheapskate..i know the MS is miles better but i got my VPC and harness for 150 years ago....the SAFC2 was 100...Also, I dont want to invest time in building from scratch nor do I want to spend $600+ for a full PNP...perhaps one day once i get sick of this bullshit (if i dont get it right/solid)..i might****

I've used the VPC on my carbed 1.6 miata with zero issues....except that carbs suck balls..why? will not start when you want, the engine bay will always smell like fuel and countless bull shit I got tired of.

Now installed the VPC on my 20v ITB and it starts all the time, runs DECENT but by playing with rail pressure and going lean on both gain and idle knobs on the VPC...still running rich like a pig.

Dropped rail pressure from 50psi to 38-40psi..I even fouled all the plugs and led to 1 cylinder not firing...i can attribute this with low vacuum due to the ITB's...before i installed the ITB's i tested the VPC with the stock intake and it ran just like stock..

So a little investigating and found that my ROM on the VPC is from a dammed 300zx. WTF...It's insane it worked just fine on my carbs as it was just using MAP for the ignition tables and not firing any injectors..

Just ordered the proper ROM chip and will see if it even arrives...

I will be installing the SAFC next with just HI-throttle..***might wire up the 20v TPS for fun***..as it's only a few wires to tap on the VPC harness...
Upcoming mods to be installed if I get this solid will be my HKS 256/256 cams and Adj Gears...

Again cheap and stupid..but fun :)

how did figure out if your chip was for a 300zx? and how did u manage to order a rom chip? new?

ROM was marked VH001B, basic google search came up with ROM for a Z32 TT....I ordered it from all places AMAZON...will it come? I have no idea..they have channel partners worldwide so its a possibility it will be fulfilled. Delivery date is 3-4 months from now...In the interim, I will augment the MAP signal with the SAFC and lean it out severely under 3500rpm

It gets better.... If it's the VPC i'm thinking it is... it's made to work in conjunction with a PFC FCon, not an SAFC.

Do research.

VPC + AFC has been used on 500hp+ Built supras and DSM's. I don't advise people using this setup at all..this is just informational and I have my reasons why I went this path as stated in the first post.

I've done the research, and my statement is still true. ;)

I'm the owner of a complete PFC setup.

I think we're just bitching about semantics at this point though.... but i don't see why HKS would purposely make something for use with an Apexi device that didn't exist at the time the VPC was developed. :P


Either way.... car looks beautiful!!! And keep us updated, i love reading about these old HKS boxes, they were way ahead of their time. :)

You might know this, though: Were the chips for the VPCs different based on modifications done to the car they were created for? Or were the chips just generic by model? The PFC chips were never meant for stock vehicle, and you'll often find more than one chip per model of car. Didn't know if the VPC worked the same way.

I don't know much about the VPC since my car can't use it. Voltage range on a VAF is too far different than traditional MAF.

VPC roms were programmed for each car hence different roms were built. i.e. Toyota Supra with 550cc and 440cc injectors..different rom..

The Voltage range on the VPC is 0-5v....standard range that the AFC can intercept and modify :).

I have a PFC as well..BNIB for my future SR20 Swap....HAHAHA.... that's another story however....

Yeah, the VPC plays fine with SAFC in regard. I'm saying a VPC doesn't play fine with my car itself, because the VAF range goes up to 12v. :(

Installed SAFC...was cake
yellow: airflow>>intercept vpc output
white: airflow>>intercept vpc input
green: rpm
brown (towards ecu), black: ground
red: ign/power

set to FL-8 and 4 cyl..changed ne points to mirror more lean under 3k...fired right up and already set HI-Throttle to pretty much lean the shit out under 3k..ranging from -50%-25%
a little hiccup right now from 3-4000 as the current map jumps from -25% to 0 in that range...(more experimenting and probably wideband down the road).

result of all this..less richness at idle (currently at 1000-1100)...works as advertised :)

Small vid...decent run..but killed my coilpack in the end i think.....stupid bank that fires 2-3 killed has very weak spark and intermittant... ended up getting towed home :)...thanks to AAA PLUS!!!...coilpack and ignitor testing up next...back to the junkers.

In other news...running a bit better with the SAFC leaning out across the board...really have to invest in a MS3 soon for the COPs upgrade.

played with my multimeter...coilpacks i swapped with another and same..weak firing of 2/3...checked out ignitor..
oc1 pin 47.8 @200 ohms
oc2 pin 47.5
ib1 1.858 @2k ohms
ib2 1.909

checked both brown/brown yellow wires from the ecu..both were the same..so ECU should be good
wtf....stock parameters are at 500-600 for IB1 and IB2...Ignitor shopping i go with my multimeter :).
hypothesis..since i was running rich and reused the fouled plugs...could have put too much strain on the ignition system..maybe?

retested my old ignitor...
ib1: 708
ib2: 786

the readings were stupid off due to a dying battery on my multimeter :)

new ignitor
ib1: 588
ib2: 580

so yup definite fucked up ignitor...plugging it in later and re-testing.

Burned my ignitor and for some reason the VPC will not output any voltage anymore.....transformed into junk....so bought and built a MS1 v3 board.



Hopefully save some work for someone one day...then its worth it posting and typing this shit.

Brains last revision...basically missing the PWM idle circuit..which i mistakenly added as per his FAQ on miataturbo...

No real need for it since not many people use Low-Impedence stuff..but it can power other relays as well....it is also good to know that once you go HI-Res..this whole feature shit is useless.

ok back to my build..

building the MS1 was surprisingly easy..
Capacitors, then resistors, then diodes, then misc shit.

THe hardest ones to do will be the Q series with 3 small CLOSE pins. **do not drink coffee when doing this series..your hands will shake too much.***

****I am still missing the one jump (js8 and ground) for a .1 Capacitor for HI-Res and adding 370ohm resistors for the more efficient spark circuit****

Building the PNP harness from a hacked old ECU and software install next..will be using the 20v TPS and tuning off the combination of MAP/TPS only..no alpha-n for me.

Here is an interpolation of my Fuel VE map..wonder if anybody else ever got theirs running...If so, please do share your map so I can compare.

Ended up tuning using Map Only...No TPS for now.

The two sheets are from MT ..I credit it to whomever created it..not mine!
