Hey guys. Wanted to go ahead and start a new thread for us since the previous one was so damn long. I'll post the next meet information here. Great meet tonight. Looking forward to the next one. Maybe we can do a cruise somewhere next time.

Yes, cruise sounds good. In case anyone is interested, Cars and coffee (https://www.facebook.com/CarsAndCoffeeCaryNc) is tomorrow. I'll be there.

BTW, we talked about ATE Super Blue being outlawed at the meet but, it seems to still be very readily available. I picked up a couple liters from Rosenthal. Not that it matters, type 200 is the same stuff and it's not going anywhere.

I was on my way home from dropping my wife off at the VA in Durham and I was on 147 doing about 70mph and I came upon a Ferrari and 911. The Ferrari moved from the left lane to the slow lane because he was doing about 65mph. Well, when I passed the 911 who was in front, the old man didn't appreciate me driving 70mph so he tried to swerve into my lane to try and slow me down. Well, when he did that I swerved towards him (but I stayed in my lane, he crossed into mine) and scared the crap out of him. I don't understand what his issue was but it pissed me off. I figured that he and the Ferrari were headed to Cars and Coffee so I didn't want to have to break out my "tools of mass destruction" bag at the meet.

Anyways, I was thinking about scheduling the meet on Sept 18th, which is a Wednesday for Starbucks at 7pm again. Let me know what you guys think.

Close to the mib date. I should be able to attend on weds, but that's a while from now. James might need a hand or 2 pulling out the engine again this weekend. I have a lot of things to do and probably can't help. Should be easy and straight forward since the rear main is the only thing getting replaced.

TOMD = "tools of mass destruction" I like!

Sorry buddy but the show has been cancelled. Lack of display.

Oh yeah, I painted the wheels. The color is way lighter than what was on the cap.

Nice. Had the same problem when I painted mine both times. The "argent silver" was darker and flatter than on the cap, the second color was far brighter than on the cap.

tsingson
09-10-2013, 08:46 AM
I actually hit the wheel up with more plastidip to use as a "primer-like" coat and then hit it up with the spray paint. The paint stuck to the dip like glue. It was pretty amazing to see how well it worked.

Two times in less than a month of have pulled my Miata motor. First time was a swap and second time was a rear main seal and bending on transmission tunnel to allow for obx header to fit. I should have like level 10 shade tree mechanic skills now.

When I was in my teens we had a local town that all the local people would cruise basically bumper to bumper traffic for just a few short blocks. would see all sorts of vehicles out. it was fun from what I remember of it. When I got married and moved away from NC and came back I learned that the town had made it illegal to cruise . Except for one weekend out of the year. Its called mule days and its in Benson. I know what mule days is and I am in no way interested in that aspect of Benson but the cruising I enjoy. last year the wife and I took the Miata. This was even before I had it painted so it was beat to sgit and I still took it. Mule days starts sept 26 so what ever that weekend is. just putting this out there is all. its basically sitting stuck in traffic for 2 hours with top down looking at strange people beside you who are also stuck in traffic lol. Usually its where the wife and I find people we went to highschool with.so what you think. Wanna go get stuck in traffic ?

tsingson
09-19-2013, 08:00 PM
I left California because traffic sucked. Well, actually it's ridiculously expensive to live out there but still traffic sucks.

I'm going to watch the ALMS race at VIR so I wont be at cars and coffee this month. The miatas are usually pretty spread out. The lot fills up fast so get there early. By 8:30 every space is full so I usually try to get there by 8.

Edit: Just thought of this, I know a lot of the regulars at cars and coffee and most of them are going to watch the race on Saturday. Attendance might be a little light this month.

Pyr0monk3y
10-02-2013, 07:15 PM
ALMS was boring last year. Corvette had no body to compete against and there were several bad wrecks resulting in long full course yellows. The reason I'm going is to watch the MX-5 race in the morning and the IMSA GT3 cup. VIR is super slippery in the morning so the mx-5 cup will be more like formula-d if it's anything like it was last year.

Thanks. I'll try and get some video for you. A couple weeks ago a friend of mine flew his FPV plane over the track and got some cool footage. We're debating on whether or not anybody will mind a little r/c plane flying around over head during the race. They probably will...

Last year I brought my slow motion camera with me and got this. Just a Porsche getting a little sketchy in oak tree. One of the corvettes wrecked a couple laps after this, there may have been some oil on the track. Didn't catch it on camera.

Nice dab-o-oppo lock there.

Two things for the weekend...There is supposed to be a euro car meet at the Art Museum this weekend, haven't looked up the deets, but when I went there last Saturday for the Porsche exhibit, there were many, many nice Porsches of all vintages in the parking lot. The exhibit is $18/ea IIRC, and worth the price, IMO. The parking lot and other (main) building is free, so get yo culture on! (The Rodin collection in the main building is pretty good) Secondly, for you BMW homers, there is an Octoberfest BMW meet at Bimmer Performance Center in Raleigh. It is near the shop Mikael works at. 11am - 5pm. There is a Miata spec builder down the row a bit in that complex, BTW. Optional $10 donation goes to the RMH charity. Address is 3200 Spottswood Street Suite 102 Raleigh, NC 27615 (https://plus.google.com/103670572410903609260/about?gl=us&hl=en)

Are those Diamond Racing Wheels? Hard to tell from the pictures; it looks like they have bolts circling the wheel face where it meets the barrel, are they multi-piece wheels?

They arn't diamond racing. I originally thought they were a two piece wheel but they are welded and have the fake rivets added for looks.
Im thinking they came off a truck of some sort and were re-drilled to a 4x100 pattern (the smaller pattern).

well, The motor I just put in IN MAY is smoking like a skywriting airplane. Blowing out a quart per 2 weeks. The delrin motor mounts are making me hate riding with the hard top on. No soft top, no covered parking, and uncooperative weather are forcing me to keep the HT on. I think I have a bad tie rod end, as the car is pulling hard left. It has more places without paint than with. The interior is the only place that I truly like, minus the obnoxious NVH.

Just starting to think that it might be cheaper to keep the parts I want, sell off the car, and buy a 95 or something. Putting in a fresh motor will probably cost more than what I can find something with better paint. I dunno, just kind of depressed about it all.

Pyr0monk3y

I feel the same way sometimes. My car is such a beater that I feel bad for spending money on it. I'll probably do an engine/tranny swap over Christmas break. I burned over a quart of oil in one day at the track and 2nd gear is really hard to find when downshifting.

I saw some 91-92 Miatas parted out on Craigslist today from A & A Auto Salvage in Selma. They have a good engine for $375 according to their site, as well as a transmission for $199. I'm eventually looking for some spares, but can't do it this week.

I may call them on a rear finish panel, mine's cracked and needs replacement.

Andy, in terms of the transmission issue and potential swap, what about a transmission rebuild as a multi-part tech day extravaganza. I mean, doesnt everyone want to rebuild a transmission????????? (slight sarcasm)

Sounds like a good idea! I have a spare transmission somewhere. I'm trying to decide if I want to dig into it. Rebuilding a transmission is a ton of work.

My main dilemma is whether I should rebuild my 1.6, swap in a different 1.6, or swap in a 1.8.

After looking more into the roll bar I purchased. It is a m1 bar. So now I'm going to need a new top. I'm not complaining because I have hated my glass rear window top anyways. By the time I get the stuff needed I will probably be installing in the middle of winter.

TimTim
10-22-2013, 06:38 PM
My super unprofessional opinion is to go for a 1.8. But I suffer big time from the "If youre already there you might as well (insert additional costly mods here)" syndrome. Im becoming a big fan of the VVT motors, but on the other side of things the NA 1.8's have some neat options like the exhintake mod with a timing bump to give a bit more. Ive wanted to do this but cant convince my dad to crack open our 97's head for a science project. If you want to go big OEM style Ive seen complete Mazdaspeed pull outs with turbo, accesssories etc for seemingly fair prices.

Speaking of transmissions, I have some unopened Redline MT-90 sitting around. I was going to use it in my RX-7, but then (sadly) sold the car.

I've had this stuff for about 10-12 years, but is it OK to use (shaken, not stirred) or should I just ditch it and get some new product?

Also, does anyone have a good parts source /numbers for that shift boot /insulation repair? I have a warm console issue (not that I mind with cooler weather).

Hey guys sorry I've been quiet; still out of town until tomorrow. I have the tools we would need for the install it will be a 14mm socket and an Allen head. The brace is the current FM unit. Most Important to me is going the install on as flat of pavement as possible. I'd hate to torque down that bar on a tweaked chassis. I don't think I want to dial in more unibody preload haha

First clip is a Hero 1, second clip is a Hero 2. Both using built in mics. Hero 2 has holes in it's case for better audio.

I'm very underwhelmed with the video quality from these cameras. Sure, it's 1080p, but image quality and resolution are two different things.

I'm thinking about buying a camera soon. (both gopros belong to my brother) I'm looking at the Drift (http://driftinnovation.com/camera/). It has a larger lens which I'm hoping will translate to better image quality.

No, but thanks for the suggestion!

I was actually near Anthony's old residence, found some Vietnamese restaurant in a strip mall full of Asian and Indian restaurants. I was seated next to another caucasian, so I didn't slurp the noodles as loudly as I normally would. :).

The owner saw the e30 and sat down at my table talking about his SL500 and the issues he has with the electronics in the gauge cluster. i couldn't think of any MB specialists, but now I know someone who does, didn't think of it at the time.

got the large pho with rare beef and loaded it with jalapenos, sriracha and bean sprouts. Ordered a rice paper spring roll too with peanut sauce. Man, I was hungry!

not the best I've had, but I didn't care.

Now I need to find a good place for bun cha gio and a Thai place for rad na. If I could find authentic Szechuan that serves white fish in red sauce, I'd be happy for that, too!

Stressing over finances isn't worth it. had this conversation with Tim at C&C today. I'm not a survivalist nutter, but I don't think we are out of the woods, economically, by a long shot. There is a reason I drive old cars...they are paid for and easy to maintain. I got over trying to impress people a long time ago and started thinking practically. It is especially scary how delicate the economy is and people can't wait to get back to how it was pre-'08. It's insane. I'm happy renting and socking away what I can. Thanks for the suggestions. What if I do away with the tabs altogether and make brackets? I'm thinking thin sheet metal riveted to the bumper and bolted to the same location as the broken tabs. That way if I hit something hopefully I can just bend the brackets back in shape.

I installed my alarm. It did not have a start on it but I did install it with starter disable and it activated the power door locks.mine was a complete wire in job no relays to plug in.

I cannot remember where I went online but you can go online to find out the color wires you need to use along with where they are located within the car.

I was hoping that someone had experience with the smart start as it has a few more wires than the typical alarm because the module has to be able to send a receive messages regarding the status of the car. I could do it if it was basic but as I was going through the harness with the diagram, there were a few more wires that I have absolutely no idea where they go.

Put it in the CRV, not the Miata. I had installed a clutch override clip in my NA, all three of my BMWs did not have a clutch interlock safety switch. There are a few occasions I had forgotten to take the car out of gear without using the clutch and it bumped the car forward. My first e30 bumped forward into a brick wall

Personally, I wouldn't put a remote start in a manual transmission car either.

Any of you RDU people having trouble with your tires touching your fenders, or potentially touching from planned suspension or wheel/tire changes in the future, I have an Eastwood rolling tool on loan and a heat gun.

You coming over to roll my front fenders ? I rub on sharp turns when accelerating from a stop. and of course railroad tracks if I'm driving to fast

doing it just to have it done would not be a bad idea

Damn man. Looking good so far. Question, how is your availability for Tuesday or Wednesday during the day? I am off starting Saturday and I was going to hit the fog lights up and get the mounted on the stock brackets and didn't know if you were available during the day those days. Let me know. Thanks!

I ordered a new top with vinyl rear window and premimum rain rail attached. And I ordered brand new spring cables for the top. I noticed on my last install I did not attach the bottom corners of the top to the car. I've been reading instructions of how its done and find it confusing but I hope to figure it out. my plan depending on weather is to put on new top and install rollbar over holiday weekend.

removing the roll bar by yourself is a colossal pain in the ass. I't's like an extended car-hugging session

kung fu jesus

Loosen everything first. The bar becomes a bit spring-loaded if you work a corner at a time.

too late for that. just a matter of trying to hold the nut under the car, and loosening the bolt in the trunk. pretty awkward

LOL! Oh yeah, that! I think I just wedged or clamped a wrench on the one side wile I worked the opposite side with a ratchet.

Demon I Am

Yeah, I got it, finally. Wrench kept jumping off, so it was a constant stop, reset, go, repeat.

I have time to roll a car or two this weekend.

I'm interested, our E30 needs some fender clearance work. I'd like to neaten up my fenders a bit too. I might do some painting this winter.

Steven, you think that heat gun can get my exhaust pipe soft enough to bend it upward slightly?

a blow torch might work better

Yeah and I have access to neither.

Torch. I have the torch, I just need to find it and probably get another 1# tank. Though I remember seeing it recently. Where do you want to bend it?

Just where we can move he tip upward closer to the cut section of the rear bumper.

Gave Andy's car a nice roll and subtle pull. No more rub! :)

Thanks again!

I just replaced my fuel filter and took a test drive. Big imporvement! The motor doesn't stop pulling at 6k anymore.

The only rub now might be the fender liners, but they will self clearance against the tires.

Demon I Am

How long does it take to roll the fenders, if the car is already in the air with the wheels off?

kung fu jesus
11-23-2013, 01:02 PM
Bout an hour per side

Demon I Am
11-23-2013, 01:26 PM
Cool. Maybe we can knock mine out sometime sooner or later.

Since I removed the rollbar for now, do you think I should use some filler bolts/washers in the now-exposed holes where the bracers were?

kung fu jesus
11-23-2013, 02:30 PM
I would. A good rainy day driving around could put water in places you really dont want it, like the wiring harness in the tunnels.

Anyone know any good upholstery shops around the Raleigh area that doesn't charge an insane amount of money to redo a seat? I need to get my drivers seat recovered at the very least, been debating between taking it somewhere to get it done or buying a katzskin seat recovering set and doing it myself. I have a friend that has a mustang and the katzskins have been great on his stang. Unless some one happens to have a decent shape tan leather NA driver seat sitting around they want to get rid of lol.

Those pics make me want to take a road trip to the mountains. I may just have to settle for driving up to hanging rock state park for few hours one day.

If you find somewhere before I do let me know lol. I have just really never had anything that I worried to much over having the seats and such reupholstered in before, but I plan on keeping my miata for a very long time life permitting.

We could always do pilot mountain in a day trip, the roads there are pretty nice an it's super close compared to the actual mountains.

That is in the same little chain as Hanging Rock, that whole area is very beautiful. Our all the state parks I have been to so far Hanging Rock is may favorite.
