View Full Version : Lazarus: Making Something Out Of Nothing

Well today marks the start of a new project. As some of you may recall I participated in a Chumpcar race last week with AR Auto Service's Miata. We placed 10th and were very competitive. This left me and a buddy, Martin (greddygalant) restless for our own clunker Miata. One week later I present to you our running $625 1991 classic red 1.6.

Martin and I will be keeping this thread updated as we slowly transform the car into a rough looking but capable track toy.

Specs:
-227k chassis
-70K junkyard 1.6
-70-80K mystery "lsd". Could be a Torsen. Owner seemed confused on what year it came from and it was too muddy for me to crawl under and see if it looked like a 1.8 or 1.6 near the axel stubs.
-Recent Alpine mp3/usb cd (sell for funding)
-NB Miata wheels with shot Les Schwab Ohtsu specials.
-Mom and pop shop cherry bomb exhaust.

Car is currently having issues firing up on its own. It started right up the night before on our first look at the car with a jump from a Ford Explorer. Today we had to resort to pop starting the car in the parking lot with the Ford. (sorry finish panel)

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m582/na6c93roadster/DSC_0609-2.jpg

The Idea: A budget Miata that can be loaned/rented out to friends looking to get a taste of track action. The car will be mostly comprised of second hand bits from my 1993, ebay/craigslist finds, and any freebee's we might acquire along the way.

As Martin mentioned, the 80a main fuse was our issue. Lazarus is now fully functional under his own power and runs quite smoothly. Idle is rock solid, oil pressure reads well, and the motor seems to run fairly quietly no serious lifter tick or anything. I've got some hasty photos of us wrenching on this scraggly beast late last night after class. In true red-headed step child form we put on a bunch of hand me down parts from my car on and he fired right up.

New-ish NGK plugs and wires.

Next on the list is fluids. Everywhere. Left over pads/rotors I have lying around and then begin the intense deep cleaning along with disassembly of the front end to asses damage.

Thanks! Hopefully we can make it an interesting read and see what we can extract out of the car using craigslist, ebay, and other used items.

We are in the process of removing as much unnecessary weight as possible and cleaning up the swimming pool of an interior. Thankfully no rust issues.

We will take a cutting wheel to the car Friday hopefully removing some of the trunk lid skeleton, door guts, hack the rear bumper up, remove busted rear finish panel, and try to fix our pax side door that won't open.

To buy:

Factory hood that is not pretzel'd like ours is thanks to the previous owner when we picked up the car. :fp:
Tractor/lawn mower/motorcycle battery
Water pump/timing belt service
vc gasket
cas o ring
Clutch slave
OE exedy clutch wouldn't hurt
ES arm bushings
Bilstein HD's
Tie rods/ends
Ebay coilover sleeve/spring (quintessential ebay coilover thread on m.net)
Rad hoses
Heater hoses
15" wheels
Pax front turn signal
HDHC roll bar/ miatacage.com cage depending on funds and where the car sits as of next spring.

To Do:

Inspect suspension- ball joints/replace boots & grease as needed
PS/AC delete
Properly gut the PS rack
Transfer over a set of my old end links with ES bushings
Install OEM swaybar ES poly bushings
Re-drill stock sway bar a notch inward
Trim factory bumpstops for new setup
Install hand-me-down Cobalt XR3/5 pads
All fluids
Temp. fix on the soft top window
Remove/reshape front bumper skin
Fix exhaust leak
Alignment session

An assortment of Cobalts I've gathered in various stages of life. Should keep the stopping department under control for next year. May have to purchase one new set of xr3's for the fronts however.
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m582/na6c93roadster/DSC_0655-1.jpg

Thanks to iRoadster we now have a good set of front turn signals on the way and Stoly hinted at a "care package" of sorts headed our way soon as well. Looking forward to more surprises and some Craigslist hunting this weekend!

I've got in mind to make stencils for everyone who sells/donates/or helps out with the car and place their mark somewhere on the body with spray paint. More interesting updates tomorrow.

Had the whole crew wrenching on the car tonight. We made some great progress.

Changed diff fluid with Redline
Finished stripping the interior
Fixed the broken passenger side door that wouldn't open
Removed front bumper skin to reshape and asses further damges
Removed fog lights and bumper crash pad
Removed rear spoiler
Purchased and installed a lawn mower battery (works great, light, and very compact)
First oil change

Gave the Mopar Combustion Chamber cleaner a go! This works wonders. Previous black piston tops are now sparkly clean.
1. We applied 1/2 can through the vacuum nipple @ throttle body while idling. Car tends to bog down but no issues.
2. Shut car off and remove plugs/wires
3. Evenly distribute the remaining 1/2 can into each spark plug whole thoroughly coating the top of the pistons.
4. Let sit for half hour
5. With plugs and wires removed "crank" the car over ejecting the residue out the top of the spark plug holes. (be sure to line the top of the valve cover with old t-shirts, shop rags, etc to keep the mess to a minimum.)
6. When no more liquid is expelled during the cranking process replace plugs and wires. Take the car on an easy drive until smoke is no longer exiting tail pipe.
7. Change oil and enjoy what seems to be new found power along with a smoother, healthier sounding and feeling engine.

Cheers iRoadster. Dampachi approved as well. Will put these to good use soon as we gather some Bilsteins. If that falls through I have another evil plan..

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m582/na6c93roadster/DSC_0687-1.jpg

I was thrilled when Stoly messaged me saying he might have some donations to get Lazarus up to speed. I anxiously waited his "care package" all week and it just arrived. All I can say is now I am feeling the pressure even more to pull this car through for next spring and summer. Thank you for the goodies, Stoly. I imagine a number of them are hand-me-downs from Scrat. We will wear them proudly on Lazarus.

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m582/na6c93roadster/DSC_1003.jpg

Also really diggin the R.S. Aizawa banner! Next few weeks will be busy with dead week and finals. The warchest of parts will continue to grow until Martin and I have time to work on the car.

The first of Lazarus' tattoos have arrived! A friend will be doing some detail work to bring the red paint back sometime next month. Then these can go on! (Don't worry, I haven't forgotten everyone else who has contributed. You will go on the car somehow). Excuse the poor photo. It will have to act as a place holder for now.

Off to do some more wheelin and dealing on Craigslist so we can scoop up some Bilsteins this week!

Pedal rubbers! Thanks adamvanxxx. Believe it or not these are leagues better than what currently resides on Laz. Nothing that is..

Oh yeah. I removed the needles from all of the gauges but the speedometer. The rest will have to be set with Lazarus actually running. I just loosely put them in place for photos.

Enjoy the gauges! And thanks for letting me help out!

Last night I was with some buddies (Option5) as they were getting ready to hit the NW Toy Run this morning. Turns out Devin had an ebay resonated test pipe for a 1.6 sitting in his trunk and it was quickly donated to the cause. Now we will have to figure out what to keep and what to sell to fund other things.

Ebay resonated/Enthuza cat/test pipe.

Greddygalant has been mia this weekend up in Seattle with Mock Trials so I'm not sure if he has had a chance to get our Bilsteins yet. Hopefully will have some updates in the suspension department shortly and then go time once finals are over next week!

I was browsing for livery schemes for Lazarus in between studying this afternoon. I kept coming back to the Advan setup. Seem's easy enough to do without screwing up horribly. We'll see what Martin thinks.
http://i1196.photobucket.com/albums/aa418/givens13/ADVAN.jpg

The war chest is growing.

Thanks to Track Dog Racing, Stoly, and TurboTyla for the donations! Things will be busy around here soon as winter break arrives.

http://i1196.photobucket.com/albums/aa418/givens13/DSC_1021.jpg

Loot:
TDR/Stoly's package

ES bushings (need to identify which locations)
ES hyper lube
Brake/clutch pedal covers. (will mix match with adamvanxxx's donation to put the best 2 on the car)
2 front SS brake lines
2 RB endlinks
TDR stickers and a patch!

Turbotyla:
Ebay sleeves/springs. Sleeve diameter looks to be a little over 2" and from my reading should fit our Bilsteins well. Springs may be too short 5" but maybe we can find something creative to do with them.

Finally, water pump I grabbed off ebay arrived. $20 shipped GMB unit same part # Mazda offers for $60.

Had a buddy come over to see Lazarus in the flesh. I think he was skeptical of it being able to move under his own strength. We tooled around the neighborhood a bit and was able to experience the Revlimiter gauges! They are incredible and my photo does not do them justice.

well, I fixed the rear window, seeing as ours was decimated when we bought it, used rivets and some clear vinyl I had laying around, worked pretty well although I think I might redo it with slightly thicker vinyl, but for 2 dollars of rivets it'll do for now. Sorry for the crappy cell photo, I'm sure Nial can take better ones tomorrow

Finally home and showered. Phwew. Curly left us with the task of cutting the rear bumper and hopefully our work will not disappoint.

Other things we accomplished:
Mt90 trans fluid
Painting random bits
Lots of cleaning
Stomped on the wrinkled hood thinking we could make it fit. Nope.

Racing Beat links in.(Thanks Stoly! One of our stockers was really bent) We think our front sway bar is tweaked as well but hopefully that can be remedied with an RB unit later.

Martin and I got a number of tasks done tonight. First off, we had a suspicion that our front sway bar was bent. I dug out the oe bar off of Lexi and look what we found..

Sure enough Laz's bar (left) has seen better days.

Friday we spent some time trying to reshape the front bumper skin. I guess we need to give it another go. For now it's daintily held on but the car is starting to look the part! First wash and a holiday picture. (turn signals courtesy of iRoadster)
http://i1196.photobucket.com/albums/aa418/givens13/DSC_1096.jpg
Finally, we took Laz out on the road for his weekly drive. Reset the gauges to read correctly after our gorgeous new Revlimiter gauge plates were installed. Had some fun with a longer exposure.

Okie doke. Here's what we did tonight. Feel free to laugh, point fingers, flame, or give constructive criticism on our Bilstein setup. Again, the plan is to 1. Toss ebay springs (soon) 2. Purchase 6" 2.5ID springs 3. Seat the sleeve on the lower circlip not the oem spring perch you see in these pictures. 4. Add NB hats + associated hardwear. 5. Trim Tein stops if needed.

Starting off we are beginning to realize how much of this car is not original.. Things such as the drivetrain were a given as we found out from the owner and they have wrecking yard #'s. But our driver side suspension has certainly taken a beating as well. The Bilstein we removed was bleeding so badly, lower control arm was not original, ecentric bolts were a mishmash of hardware, and the removal process overall didn't go too smoothly alluding to bent pieces. (Oh and our seats must be out of a 1.8 as the seat belt receivers are attached to the rails.)

Lower arms free.
http://i1196.photobucket.com/albums/aa418/givens13/DSC_1113.jpg
Poppin them bushings out for fresh ES goodies!

Here is what it would take to perhaps safely run the Ebay 4.5" springs. Pretty hilarious.

http://i1196.photobucket.com/albums/aa418/givens13/DSC_1115.jpg
Notice there is maybe 1" of travel before the stop would begin making contact. We'll have to start gathering our new hardware but I think the Ebay + Bilstein combo will be a winner. Just a matter of new springs, hats, and some exploring.

Oh and thank you Stoly. We got the old cat off nearly at the expense of a socket. Test pipe + new + not so new exhaust gaskets.

I had some free time this afternoon and felt like being productive with Lazarus yet all of our parts and goodies are at Martin's house while he is out of town. So.. I scooped up Lazarus and brought him back to the garage for some more cleaning. Having misplaced my Griots polishes I dug up a very old bottle of some unknown clay like compound substance and had at it. Following to passes of this red clay I would wipe down the surface thoroughly, quickly hand wash the section in the garage and put a layer of wax down with a buffer. While probably not the most ideal product to work with I really didn't feel like going out of my way to put the spendy stuff on this car.

Turns out it worked just fine! Example of the trunk section I started on compared to the oxidized surrounding areas.

Anyways, after a setback working on my car this morning I came back to Lazarus with AntiochOG to get serious with the cleaning. Here is what we ended up with. Keep in mind the entire car started looking like the hood.

Martin was pretty pumped to see Lazarus looking like this when he got back in town. We're hoping the sponsorship detail from Gallagher Auto Spa should be able to take care of the rest and then some. Thanks again AntiochOG for the help and company. Hopefully your photos will grace our build thread soon!

Martin and I embarked on today's business not sure what to expect when we tore into the motor as far as upkeep went. We were pleased to find everything had been looked after quite well and the wrecking yard motor is a great candidate for us. Perhaps a little down on tq (exhaust leaks and large test pipe might be the culprit) we have a great drivetrain just waiting for some new life breathed into it.

First off, Curly, generously donated some daisys for us to borrow for a bit. This will free up our 16's to hit Craigslist for a sale.

http://i1196.photobucket.com/albums/aa418/givens13/DSC_1141.jpg
We've been given permission to paint them as we see fit. More on that at a later date.
Off we set on our water pump and timing belt job.

Accessory belts loosened and removed.
http://i1196.photobucket.com/albums/aa418/givens13/DSC_1144.jpg

Our greatest relief of the day. Our '91, which does have a wrecking yard motor, has been updated to a LNC 1.6. Phwew just one more thing not to worry about!

yeah, I was supposed to go but my grandmother's health was not at an ideal state and I wanted to stay home to keep an eye on her, so I figured I'd be productive while Nial was picking up our parts. T-belt job was a piece of cake, I took some time to clean a lot of things and sand and paint our exhaust heat shield with some high temp paint and I also removed the majority of the power steering including the pump, resiviour, and lines, just have to take the rack apart now and we'll be good to go. Valve cover is not on in the photos, just sitting on top to keep dust out of the motor, still have the to the CAS seal paint the valve cover a nice wrinkle red. Sorry for the cell phone quality of the pics, Nial is the man behind the great photos you all like haha

Just made it back in town. Autopower bar with a modified extra single diagonal for Lazarus is here. We'll need to add a harness bar and I think door bars would be cool. This bar is no Harddog or BossFrog but for this build and the price I think it suits us quite well.

I daily eBay coils and it's safe... if you don't hit any dips or bumps in the road. lol The PO ran them without bumpstops, so I coil bind if I hit anything going fast. Saving for real suspension as we speak...

With the AC and PS belts removed the car seems to have shed some parasitic power loss. Whether that's true or not it sure seems to run happier after the refresh we did. Our last bit of maintenance will involve an ebay alum. radiator of sorts when summer approaches.

Our next updates will hopefully involve squaring away the suspension (new springs, finish bushings, nb hats) and/or a new hood.

Our hardware store errands to get rollbar bolts, washers, nuts etc.. also allowed me to get going on my motor mount project. 2 hockey pucks each side. All thread, graded washers, lock washers, and nuts. My guess is these will fall between a hard poly compound and Delrin. Should be a great setup for just a few bucks.

Might be a bit until I actually get them in the car but I have all the hardware I need. Just have to cut the all thread to the appropriate length.

We noticed a few water leaks coming from the t-stat housing so we ordered up new hoses at AR. Slowly but surely getting the car in the right direction. Good news is the Miata seems to run much better after our overhaul the last two weeks.

I guess we could hammer them out a bit. It's probably a lost cause. Hoping to gain back what little chassis rigidity the car once had with the rollbar + a buddy's welding skills to add on additional pieces (doorbars, petty bar, possibly even a full cage). Not too overly concerned but just another awesome feature showing how abused this car is. :D

Doesn't matter. Just build bars going off of it that go higher and contour to the inside of the top and then down through the dash, into the dash bar, and then into the floor. You can build forwards off of it to the strut towers if you want too. Then of course rearwards into door bars and into the trunk and rear strut towers.

It's as easy as cutting holes through the firewall, sticking the bar through, then welding the bar to the firewall so it's sealed again. Doesn't the shop you intern at have a cage building shop that they always use? You could go ask those guys for tips on stuff like that as well as the pipe diameter and construction along with the way it should be bent.

Yeah we used to have our own guy that did beautiful work but he moved out East to work for BMW. I'll figure something out. Pipe diameter etc. should be no problem to figure out. BossFrog and Harddog list their specs and I'm sure there are SCCA specs floating around the internet.

Yup, the hardest part is going to be getting it bent properly. You're going to have to find a shop that has a CNC bender or rotary bender or order the pipes pre-bent.

One of AntiochOG's friends has a bender. Should be able to figure something out. Anyways here's what we did today. Got the rear section in. It actually looks good and the single diagonal adds some much needed testosterone to the Autopower.

It's actually kinda interesting. The alignment is so messed up that the car literally trips over itself due to the camber and toe. When turning at full lock left or right the car plows even in the dry as the tires fight each other in different directions.

Yeah we could certainly give a diy effort a shot. Thankfully we don't use the car to get around. We drive it maybe 30 mins a week or so just to keep a charge on the battery. I'm hoping to do an exchange for an alignment session at the shop I intern at in return for sporting the shop windshield banner. For now though the car isn't really presentable enough to strike a proposal with the shop owner. Soon perhaps! Just a hood, finished suspension, wheels and some more cleaning away from that point I think.

Patience paid off! I knew we could find a better deal on a hood if we waited. Spotted this sucker on Monday and immediately called on it. Tonight Martin and I ventured into the unknown that is Eagle Creek, OR.

After navigating the treacherous mountain pass (not really treacherous) in the trusty TDI Lazarus support vehicle we had arrived on a narrow Folson Rd. that didn't even register on Martin's phone. Expecting to be greeted by some inbreeding, tourist slaying, woodsman Martin and I swung the Jetta down the gravel driveway only to be presented with a rather tidy one room house and gara...

Never mind all that we got a hood! A 1997 Montego Blue hood in rather good condition for the piddly amount of $30. Turns out the elderly man had an sc'd Montego and autox'd regularly. We shared with him our project and began happily strapping the hood to the roof of the Jetta.

Martin banished me from rope tying to take a few pictures. Here's what we got!

http://i1196.photobucket.com/albums/aa418/givens13/DSC_1260.jpg

Off we went crisply navigating the treacherous mountain pass. Touching apex's, tracking out, and hammer down we made great time on our way back to civilization. We began to hear a noticeable thumping sound. So we took a break and noticed the hood had shuffled a good foot backwards.

Woo cooling system is just about stable! Tstat housing hoses arrived yesterday. Time for a ebay cxracing radiator and we can check this department off the list. Also springs should be arriving shortly! We won a set of 4 Eibach ERS springs on ebay. 400#/425#. 2 of which will be back up for sale to get the appropriate front springs we want.

Eibach springs showed up. Gathered most of the bits and tossed a rear set somewhat together when I got home tonight. I need to do some studying of nb hat hardware and see what I have and what I'm missing and how it all goes together.

Also need to grind off the oem spring perch tap so the sleeve can rest on the circlip. Other than that pretty pumped to get these on the car.

With the skill of a 14 year old girl I took the cutting wheel to the first shock mount tab. Scary feeling but it seemed to work out perfect. Ebay sleeve rests perfectly on the lower circlip now. Shock body could probably use some heavy duty tape to secure things up a bit and prevent any slop. This is pretty fun though. Have to finish the rest and then figure out the top hat situation next.

Good! I happen to know a lot about riding on bump stops

You'll see why you're glad you cut them in half when you bolt them on the car and you look at the shock travel when static. Say you have ~4" of shock travel and 2" is bump stop then your actual effective "spring rates" will be much higher than anticipated when cornering because you'll be riding on the bump stop. Some people tune for that though.

Yup. We ran just bumpstops in the front on our Chumpcar. :slayer:

I will definitely lob some off what I have. That said I'm very excited to see everything coming together.

Scooped up some Fat Cat Motorsports MCU shock mounts today from a part out I've been helping with. Also have my eyes on a set of unknown front and rear adjustable sway bars that came from the car. Hoping to get those as well. Starting to think this car might actually handle pretty decently.. Hopefully have some assembled pics in a few. Also trimmed the Tein Bumps down a bit.

Yeeehawww scored a free FAT fsb today. It's definitely seen better days. My guess is it's a Jackson Racing solid adjustable but I could be wrong. Just needs some cleaning and new paint. Suspension on a budget ftw!

Rushed photo but here it is. Also got a line on some Flyin Miata annodized purple rear shock mounts. Hoping to scoop those up soon. If that's the case we can return the NB top hats mbrown so graciously donated to us.

We are hoping to get the car out for its first track day on June 4 with Portland BMW club. We'll probably only run it a session or two depending on how things go.

Between now and then we need to purchase a radiator, alignment bolts, align, hand-me-down rotors from my Miata, old Cobalt Friction XR pads from my car, fix t stat housing leak leak and more cleaning/cutting weight.

Pretty do able list. We haven't had much in the way of updates as we've been busy with class etc but hopefully the new suspension revives some motivation to get the car prepped for June.

Ours aren't great but will do for now. I've foam-ectomied the driver side so it should hold us off until we find a bucket, get a harness bar welded in and transfer over a harness from my car.

Let's see we have parts from Bilstein, Fat Cat Motorsports, 949/AST/Xida bushing bits from Stoly, Ebay sleeves/perches, Tein bumpstops, Eibach springs and Flyin Miata shock mounts. Quite the mish mash. Car rides great in the quick spin we took around the block. Currently sitting way too high but we'll have to do more adjusting later. Looks tacky and obviously the center of the trunk is more flexible. Other than that no. Still latches fine and is certainly not going anywhere. No tremendous weight savings to be had but small things add up.

Core support is munched and I think it in turn bent the arm that raises it up. Bolt becomes loose every now and then it it slips a bit. Something to look into for sure.

I'm sure Nial will have better photos later, but I thought some of our supporters would like to see that we're keeping track of their contributions, I promise more stickers are to come once we get them made.

~$1500 later (including purchase price) we end up with this and it's going to debut at the Portland BMW Club's July 31 track day this Tuesday. This is about as budget as it gets. More so than Chumpcar or Lemons. Godspeed Martin. Come back with your shield or on it.

Used Cobalt XR3 front XR5 rear pads. Fresh fluids.

Quality fender work to make way for 15x8 Konigs.

http://i1169.photobucket.com/albums/r513/nialgivens/DSC_0313-3.jpg
In addition to the above, as of roughly 50pm today:

-The passenger side fender is fully bolted up and not swaying in the wind.

-The hard top is bolted in with four brackets instead of just two.

-The steering rack is now bolted down (one bolt was ~1/4" loose).

-The main cooling fan was found to be dead and ripped out.

-AC fan was installed and wired in as the main fan, hopefully being controlled by the stock ECU. If we ground the sensor wire the fan kicks on, so the only variable is the fan sensor, which we never had a chance to warm up the car and test. If it's found to be dead we'll leave the fan jumped on in the diagnostics box.

-Rear under tray was installed, Laz really needs the front one to optimize the cooling, it's a big gaping hole between the rear tray and the back of the bumper.

-Speaking of the bumper, it was fully bolted up instead of just zip ties.

-Power steering line was finally removed, cut, pinched, and replaced.

-A few other wires were cut and removed for some light weight savings.

I think that's everything.

2.2 up front 1.6 rear camber.

I was concerned with that as well. Curly ended up installing hood pins at the track (lol). Everything stayed secure. Fixing the bumper cover would definitely help though.

So a couple days ago Curly and I tore out the steering rack, properly depowered it, cleaned it up to like new condition, and then welded up some plugs for the line holes and I got the opportunity to learn how to weld. Just one photo for now, I do have more Gopro footage coming of my third session from Laz's track debut

Since the PCA lapping day was canceled we got to work on the Advan livery. It's obviously not perfect but gets the point across.

We also may have a dead lifter

Anyways some of us gathered at greddygalant's place and we set to work.

Naturally I spent most of my time standing on the car. (Ignore the missing pcv and hose. Our engineer decided to sabotage Lazarus and then piece him back to together with Galant parts.)

A moment of silence.
Sold them to a local red 96 miata owner, he was quite pleased. We got his wheels plus some cash in return. Just a $100 more and we can order some 15x8s
Here are the temps, I know they're ugly, but don't laugh too much.

2nd Lazfab track day early report: we threw a session away on what turned out to be horribly shitty tires on a cold wet track. Best time of 1:59, previous best from last year was 1:40. Threw my tires on (again!) and achieved this in the first three laps:
Well it's time I admit it. Lazarus is faster than Lexi. I had a blast driving that car around this afternoon. Only a few small things I would change but extremely impressive. My mind cannot compute the 1: 37.9 with a passenger, all season tires, old alignment and no seat/harness.

I got an unexpected PM a while back from the LazFab Team asking for my home address, etc. My sticker showed up just as I was leaving town for work so I didn't get a chance to put it anywhere until this evening. Thanks again and good luck in all your endeavours!

Also pictured is our awesome tow hook from arsenal!

Unfortunately with Laz's core support damage one bolt was all we could fit. Even without any though, it was much better.

It has beena while since we have seen an update with Laz. Glad he is looking awesome! How much money in total do you guys have in that project?

Let's see.
Right around 1600-1800 including the purchase price of the car, maybe a little less. We've done a lot of trading and selling bits here and there so it's difficult to say. Well under 2K though. Car was 625 by itself originally.

I'd like to announce that Garagestar has come on board with helping make laz into a faster and safer track car. Ken was kind enough to ship out a cooling plate, rear diff mounts, brake master brace, and rear tow hook. I have just unboxed the items, the quality is terrific and the fit and finish is great. So far I've installed the cooling plate which was a simple 3 bolt affair. More and better quality pictures to come as well as a full review of the brake master brace and cooling plate from Laz's upcoming track date on the 6th.

By the time I arrived this afternoon to help bleed brakes and what not Martin had already installed nearly all of our donated goodies. Thanks again GarageStar! Every little bit counts but this was a huge step forward for Laz.

Starting with the appropriately latchless version of the GarageStar cooling panel. Seeing as Laz rocks hood pins this was perfect. It hides our mangled core support, cleans up the bay a bit and hopefully directs a bit more air into our itty bitty stock radiator.

http://i1196.photobucket.com/albums/aa418/givens13/DSC_1078_zpsac26c32b.jpg (http://s1196.photobucket.com/user/givens13/media/DSC_1078_zpsac26c32b.jpg.html)

We then move on to the GarageStar brake master cylinder brace. This shock tower mounted brace prevents unwanted flex under pedal pressure. We are told to expect very reassuring pedal feel from those who already have braces of this nature.

http://i1196.photobucket.com/albums/aa418/givens13/DSC_1080_zps0bcdb686.jpg (http://s1196.photobucket.com/user/givens13/media/DSC_1080_zps0bcdb686.jpg.html)

With the addition of our front tow hook we had to have a complimenting rear hook. The GarageStar rear tow hook is a truly unique piece.

http://i1196.photobucket.com/albums/aa418/givens13/DSC_1081-1_zps4f18ea78.jpg (http://s1196.photobucket.com/user/givens13/media/DSC_1081-1_zps4f18ea78.jpg.html)

And the last mod, something we won't get to in time for Monday's track event, some delrin differential bushings. Lord knows Laz needs all the stiffening he can get. After swiss-cheesing his sensitive areas with an angle grinder and 230k miles of road use he's certainly been around the block chassis wise.

http://i1196.photobucket.com/albums/aa418/givens13/DSC_1085-1_zps03d4f92e.jpg (http://s1196.photobucket.com/user/givens13/media/DSC_1085-1_zps03d4f92e.jpg.html)

To Laz! To smashing SM lap times on a $2000 budget!

Have some updates: car went to ORP, epic off track excursions occured, did some NASA time trials, got a seat and a seat bracket from Kazspec engineering to go with an ex Porsche cup car Schroth harness. Welded a harness bar into the autopower roll bar. Car also is running mega squirt gen 1 pnp with a tune. Makes 115whp/101wtq on dynojet with MS, JR header, cold side intake, and a catless 2.5 inch exhaust with a spoon style muffler. Weighs 1890 full of fluids. Car hauls ass.

Making horsepowers!!!
Laz is such a trooper. He sat in a junk yard, got a junk yard motor, then we trashed it through multiple road trips, track days, auto crosses, and a rally cross. Two of those track days were on a very lean tune way over MBT on a MegaSquirt we installed in a parking lot. THEN we go to the dyno and he puts down ONE less horsepower to the wheels than Mazda rated this engine at the crank almost a QUARTER CENTURY ago. Amazing little car.*

New intake setup and new poly motor mounts installed. Gotta fab up some tabs to attach the headlight cover from the hood. Filter currently sits right behind a turn signal intake .,as you can see there is still a substantial amount of rally cross mud still in the bay.

Had the opportunity to do NASA time trials today, had the pleasure of meeting Savington and mr. bob bundy and his crazy fast turbo miata. First 3 sessions were nice and wet but the last session was dry and fun. Lazarus diced it up with Rover. Learned a few things :Hoosier sm6s are significantly faster than RA1s and I need to lower laz all around and dial in more camber. It was a pretty fair little battle with lazarus having a weight advantage that negated rovers hp advantage. Ran consistent 1:33s in the dry.

Also got some specifications thanks to the NASA scales and the English Racing dyno
WHP:115@6500rpm
WTQ: 101 @5250rpm

Weight with full tank and geared driver: 2047 w/o driver: 1897
LF:582 RF: 511
LR:507 RR: 446
L:1097 53.56%
R: 954 46.58%

Cross weight 1019 49.75%
Car could use a little weight on the right rear. PIR is a CW track and since that is Lazarus's home track it would help to shift some weight to the inside of the car for the majority of the corners. Overall I'm quite pleased with this season. I'm hoping to run stiffer and lower suspension next season for better camber numbers and hopefully pick up some Hoosier sm6s and hit 1:30 flat.

At the "ride height" pictured front has 6.5 degrees of camber :D obviously just seeing what full compression looks like. Based on the fender clearance I could fit a set of 15x9s with 225s with ease. Ride height will be closer to 949s race spec measured at the pinch welds looking at 3.75 up front and 4 at the rear.

A parcel showed up today from Roush Yates Racing, I opened it eagerly like a kid on christmas and found Laz's new oil cooler. Its a small Setrab unit that is a hand me down to Lazarus from some form of stock car racing. Other than a few scratches the piece is in fantastic shape, no dents or massive fin deformation, the plan is to mount it in the mouth of the front bumper in front of the radiator and attach some mesh to the air guid to prevent it from being hit by debris on the road or pieces falling of other track cars. Even came with a nice Roush Yates Racing decal.

lots of updates from the past few months
Laz is still getting a new heart, except instead of VVT kicking in there will be boost.
Had 15 minutes to play with the car yesterday, got an opportunity to replace on of the turn signals with lexan, there will be a projector mounted behind it for headlight use.
http://i414.photobucket.com/albums/pp228/sarukhan12/01fdbcc450ea2a3997d4e8e352dddbc1_zpsd608703e.jpg (http://s414.photobucket.com/user/sarukhan12/media/01fdbcc450ea2a3997d4e8e352dddbc1_zpsd608703e.jpg.h tml)

Update time, laz received an msm subframe, diff, one piece axles, and rear subframe brace today.
Out with the old

And in with the new

Yes thank you Richard, laz will be a nice NA/NB hybrid soon enough.
I think 200whp would be nice but I'll be happy with 180, I want midrange torque for coming out of corners more than anything, it should be nice with the stronger msm diff setup so I can launch control my way to glory.

Also got this little guy for the msm motor, its a 2.5 inch downpipe from pro tuning lab.

So this is happening.you can see the damage that laz sustained before we got him. Motor comes out soon, more goodies to come.

As mentioned before, motor has an 01+ gasket! thus reroute will not happen yet.
Some updates on the motor, we resealed the bottom and did a new rear main seal. Also adapted a 1.6 alternator to work properly with the 1.8 belts. This involved using a Garagestar 1.8 pulley, shaving the cage of the 1.6 alternator for clearance and removing the spacer that sits below the OEM 1.6 pulley. Lines up perfectly now and removed the hassle of control the NB alternator.

I also stopped by English Racing today and dug throuh their used parts shed and left with enough OEM and aftermarket evo intercooler piping to build Laz's IC piping.

Yeah, but good lord I spent 5 laps behind the gt3 without a point by the session before. Just super frustrating that advanced group drivers can't get their heads out of their ass.

Session 3 bumper cam, chasing down an exige s and watched a legends car lose what looked to be a portion if its header in the chicane.

135 drafting the c7 vette and gt3. 125 on the fast lap.
Installed an RB tubular front bar today, changed all the fluids and replaced my heater hoses and went to distilled water and water wetter, installed my oil cooler, and chopped a big vent in my hood. The oil cooler location will change in the winter when the air dam goes in but for now I'm copying Mr. Hydes location for now since his works well. The cooler is sealed against the radiator.

Red is the new msm motor with turbo setup, blue is the old NA 1.6. Numbers are uncorrected to prevent forum drama.

Mods are as follows
stock msm long block/manifold/turbo
Protuning lab 2.5 inch catless downpipe
OEM MSM catback with muffler delete
OEM Evo 8 intercooler, piping, and BOV
MBC set at 12psi
Gen 1 PNP with curly tune

Needless to say I'm quite pleased with the results, I hope to do rods in the future and shoot for 250whp with a better exhaust and perhaps 2 more psi.

A few laps from BMW club,
some highlights include:
Lap 4: single tire lockup braking into turn 10 with a nice bobble towards the wall
Lap 6: fast lap of 1:26.3 in traffic
Lap 7: 1:26.7
copious amounts of fun sliding the majority of turn 6
You'll see during the video that at one point the insulation pad that is intended to keep my right leg from burning on the trans tunnel falls off and slides under my feet, shortly thereafter one of the HVAC pipes falls of and rolls about on the passenger floorboard.

A few small updates, on Monday we will be swapping in an MSM 6spd to replace the vocal 5spd that is currently sitting in Laz, at which point Laz will have a full MSM drivetrain.
I also added some +5 braking stickers courtesy of Singular Motorsports, you can see their brake ducts peaking out from behind my massive 1.6 brakes. Thanks Ryan and Sean for the great product.

I plan to run the 1.6 brakes until they can no longer last a 20 minute session of hard driving, at that point like curly mentioned it'll be little bbk up front and 1.8 rears.

Small update, added street cred prior to 6spd swap.

some more updates

Did some test fitting of 11.25 inch lotus elise brake rotors with 2 piston AP racing calipers, the rotors are significantly thicker than any Miata bbk kit rotor Ive seen. My wheels clear them easily so now its just a matter of making a bracket for the Miata hub and boom, no more melting front brakes for laz.

The car in the photo is a Lotus 211

So this last extended weekend was a real torture test for laz and myself. Started out Friday night attempting to break in a clutch the night before a track day, also had to mark my shift points on the speedo since laz still doesn't have a functioning tach, needless to say topping laz out in each gear on farmland back roads at night was exhilarating.

Saturday morning saw NASA time trials at PIR, action photos and videos to come but the car was great, ran consistently in the low 1:26s with a best of 1:26 dead on a 90 degree day on worn out tires. For reference Bob Bundy was running in the 22s, I had a nice battle with a 420whp conti slick shod evo 9 driven by my friend Jason.

Here is a shot my friend Molly took in the paddock of Laz hanging out.

http://www.miataturbo.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=124279&dateline=1411523463 (http://s414.photobucket.com/user/sarukhan12/media/10665696_10203791545161417_4022219794544595319_n_z ps3687339d.jpg.html)

car was good until I melted the 1.6 brakes and had caliper seal failure.

http://www.miataturbo.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=124309&dateline=1411538732 (http://s414.photobucket.com/user/sarukhan12/media/10622703_10204338001559159_6950748796749065864_n_z ps87edcc90.jpg.html)

that's the pad between the rotors, one of which was cracked.

Threw a new set of front calipers, rotors, and pads on it and drove out to Oregon Raceway Park that night.

ORP has some nice clear gas right at the track, here is laz filling up, again, video to come soon

First time to ORP post MSM swap, ran a 1:56 dead as my personal best with lots of time left in the car, had a good battle with Brian Kelly and John Mann and was within a second of their best, the session that I had clear track I also had a passenger. Again, laz was great and had no issues, went out on my newly mounted 225 rs3 v1s on my street set of FFD wheels at the end of the day and did a 1:58, car is a blast to slide around on street tires. Drove home that night.

Next morning was BMW club track day at PIR. it was only about 70 degrees outside, lots of the local hairdressers showed up, here is a photo of Laz and curly's smurf on my street FFDs

went out in the morning, did my personal best and broke into the 1:25s, I think with fresh tires and better brakes this car has low 24s in it. I managed to go through 50% of my new front pads in 6 total sessions between ORP and Portland. Unfortunately after my fast lap I saw the temp start to climb and the charge light came on so I killed it and trundled into the pits. This is what I saw.

even though laz was down I had the pleasure of driving curly's car for a session, was good fun, oregonmon's car for a session, and my student's chevy 350 swapped with a 4spd Miata on archaic suspension and stock brakes for a few laps.

Great great weekend spent with good friends. Looking forward to fixing laz and bigger and better things next season.

The car has come so far, a year ago I could not have fathomed it would be here. Thank you to all the forum members for their support throughout the build, and for all the vendors and sponsors including AR Auto Service/Adrenaline Racing, Garagestar, FFD Motorsports, Singular, Kazspec Engineering, and Im sure others that I am forgetting. There is much more to come.

Have a few exciting winter projects in store, including something very similar to this.

A pretty big update, Lazarus now has a welded in half cage with door bars done by Russ at Racetech Fabrication here in Portland OR. I plan to paint it white, here are some shots of the cage. Just driving the car back home the change in chassis rigidity is instantly noticeable.

Took the car out for one last time today, ran the RS3s instead of the hoosiers and did a 1:26.8 personal best on street tires which Im pretty sure is the fastest street tire Miata around PIR. Car was flawless with the exception of the brakes which was to be expected, those are on the list of upgrades for winter. The cage helped chassis rigidity to no end, the MCS are really able to take advantage of the stiffer platform.
