I'm trying to wrap my head around how this is done to a front bumper. It's probably obvious but I just. can't. understand. (pic stolen from oldcafe)

You mean the small holes for the aux lights or the blending of the factory miata parking lights? pretty sure this is an aftermarket "Clubman" nose, however you can probably do the same with a factory nose and some filler?

See this thread: http://clubroadster.net/vb_forum/89-...os-so-far.html He made his own Clubman nose

^ link sends me to hammerhead's profile and none of his threads have anything to do with what is being discussed here.

this one:http://clubroadster.net/vb_forum/89-roadster-projects/54463-my-eunos-so-far.html

I'd love the skill, and spare bumper to do this

If the link continues to mess up, go to CR and search for SMAC His build is titled My Eunos So Far....

i can really appreciate the project he tackled. barchetta bumper is something i'd love to emulate myself since there's no way i'd ever drop the cash on one. even if i had it to burn.

blending of the parking lights. On Rev9's blog it says it's a DIY clubman.

Correction: not seeing the info in his thread, hopefully he will update that here as well? Or if someone knows him maybe they can possibly ask him to update his thread? Thanks!

and skill. Don't forget the skill part. Tons of people have time and patience and ambition. But it takes heaps of all of those to acquire the necessary skills to have a decent looking finished product.

Edit: The bumper OP posted looks to be BRG, not black like Smac's

Correct. The bumper in the first post belongs to oldcafe and his roadster.

where do you get those mirrors?

They are Runabout M2s, there is usually at least one pair on Yahoo Japan auctions at any given time, contact Rod at Tetsuya Garage (http://mazdaroadster.net/showthread.php?565-***JDM-STUFF-FOR-SALE-Ver-1***) and he should be able to get you some. Otherwise, they pop up in the classifieds every now and then if you want to wait.
