Hello all,

Is there a DIY on the site or does anyone have any experience with replacing the carpet panels?

Thank you

There is a company out of the UK that makes replacements for all years; I've seen a sample of the material, and it is the same as the cut pile in the later cars, not the loop from the earlier carpets. It comes in two sections rather than one for ease of installation and is priced reasonably. http://www.newtoncomm.co.uk/cars/mazda/mx5-eunos-series-1-1989-1997/

I am not sure if they come with instructions. I do know that if you use the factory one-piece carpet there is a fair bit more work required under the dash.

Telnet, replacing the carpet should be a pretty straight forward. Remove parts, like seats, center console, and any snaps or connectors that are holding the carpet pieces in place. The only difficult part is getting the carpet out from under the dash. You do not have to remove your dash, but you need to cut part of the carpet. Rremove the radio and you can get your hand inside the dash and cut down the center of the carpet that get's caught up under the dash (it's a small 3 inch cut). When you reinstall your carpet get a couple pieces of velcro (the hook side) and connect the cut pieces pack together under the dash, through the radio hole.

I hope that helps. Good luck.

Very true about needing to cut under the radio console. Even with the dash out, there a plastic snap holding the carpet in place under the heater core. Easier just to cut.

Be sure to use the right tool to remove the trim clips. Unless you are buying new ones. You can get by with using needle/nose pliers, but it's not optimal.

You need to pull the seats, door sill plates, door surround rubber seal, kick panels, center console, shifter, rear trim pieces.
You want to take out the bolts on the bottom of the dash support at the tranny tunnel.
Put the top up and remove the rear package tray carpet.
Remove the rear bulkhead carpet
Remove the main carpet. There are clips that hold the carpet to the door sills. There is a fastener under the kick plates, iirc.
There is a hidden clip under the heater core assembly dead center of the tranny tunnel under the dash. You can try pulling the dash, unbolting the heater core, and get to the clip, or take the heater core out.
OR you can bunch the carpet up at the front of the tranny tunnel, and give it a good hard yank. It should snap the fastener's head off, then you can pull the rest out.
OR some people will just cut it out, and leave the carpet under there...

When you replace the carpet, you will have to lift up on the heater core assembly while sliding the carpet into place. Work from side to side, carefully sawing the carpet into place. that upper clip is not needed, as the dash holds it down.

Hope this helps!

I'd recommend replacing the trim clips, honestly. At this point they're old, brittle bits, anyway.

I never knew there are an option for the NB. I seen the replacement for the NA in the past. I booked that site to my favorites.

I knew there was a euro source for NB carpet sets, no US anymore.

When Laying in the new set, it may be good to have a steamer and mild heat gun. it probably won't fit terribly well, but with the aforementioned tools and some well thought out cuts, it will lay in pretty well.

Paul, I cannot wait to see what your interior looks like when it is done! I think about it often.

Looks like Moss imports those same kits into the USA

You and me both! Ken (RetroModern) has been busting his ass finding laser cutters he can trust to do the work, and has sent me photos of the latest work, but I don't want to spoil the reveal... then, too, the seats are as yet untouched, so even when all the rest is in, I need to have the seats done. Might be a while before I post shots, unfortunately.

I've been thinking about the MS Type Fs I have--they are really quite comfortable even on long hauls, but don't use the adjustment at all. If I could find fixed, lighter seats that were just as comfortable, I'd be tempted to go for them, but so far I've not found a fixed bucket I like as much as the MSes.

found this one on eBay, looks interesting as they can do tons of colors.

Looks like they have sold several already in the past.

If anyone has experience with them please post up a reply, how long did it take to get it, how is the fitment, how is the quality?

I've been speaking with Newton Carpets and they offer a "square weave" carpet for some cars; it's not full loop (why is it so hard to find full loop, even for an extra premium??) but it is different to the standard cut pile.
