Firgured I would move this to the exterior section so folks can help answer this question.
Are the OEM Rear mud guards the ones that go below the bumper lines?
There are 2 types that made it into the USA IIRC. The first was from Japan (came installed on the cars) for the NA6

The second was also OEM but I think it was made in the USA, it was offered for the NA8 model. Notice it goes up higher on the rear fender.
Both are interchangeable

Very interesting.
The JDM pair look a lot better, imo.

I'm pretty sure that neither of these two types were ever installed at the factory at least for the USA cars. They were a dealer or self installed item.

I don't know if this is any help but my car came with two piece ones. About the same height as the NA8 ones phat posted, but above the bumper/fender seam it was a separate part.
Here's Kjman55's beautiful car with said plastics

Actually those are a combo of the shorter NA6 mudguards with an even shorter mudguard type of extension piece that was available through Mazda, which basically made them the longer NA8 mudguards - like Malibu Q wrote. M2 Incorporated used the really short units on their M2 cars.
FYI - I had the longer NA8 mudguards on my car and when I took them off, the upper section had rubbed some paint off of both quarters.
A pic of the ones I am talking about, and on my roadster.:
