View Full Version : Used Wheel Picture - what is this ridge that I am seeing?

Can anyone tell me what is going on where the arrows are pointing? Anything to be concerned about? Repairable?
This is part of a set of wheels I am considering picking up for refinishing.

It's hard to tell from the picture, I would ask for a close up. It may just be a bad picture or a small knick that took a piece out of the lip.

OK, I got some close ups. Apparently it is curb (or gutter) rash. The one wheel has it on front and back:

I think this can be cleaned up but opinions/ advice are welcomed.

That's not bad at all and can be fixed fairly easliy

Nicks and dents can be repaired (sanded and/or polished)... but big, deep scrapes could possibly require re-welding due to the supporting function of the side.
As far as I can see on the photos, I'd say it's repairable (just start by sanding). I've had some nicks and dents in my "new" rims and managed to remove most of it.
If sanding doesn't work, you could always see a rim-professional for opinion.

looks like they drove too fast next to the curb and knicked a chunk off. i'm fairly sure a wheel repair shop could fill it in and blend it smooth or something, as if it never happened.

Personally, I would re-barrel. That hardware being rusty is not a comforting sign.

In New England, we call that patina, and folks up here spend lots of monies on it in our antique shops.

Good point on the rusty hardware. Might as well fix em right once. Disassemble, repair what you can, re-barrel what you can't repair, powder coat the center spokes, and fresh new hardware. Nice rims BTW.

I would personally stay away from them. A chunk that large taken out could have resulted in a slightly out of round rim that will never balance right.

Lots of wheels out there.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. New hardware (sans patina) would be part of the plan along with clean, repair, polish, and powder coat. Disassembly will probably be a major pain. I always has plans; sometimes bigger than my will to follow through. I think I'm going to give these a shot. Fingers crossed.

Edit: As I'm posting revlimiter, a respected cool head around these parts, tells me to stay away. This may be a futile learning experience but my patience for scouring the classifieds is unfortunately limited.

Yes. If I were to buy a set of wats like that, custom barrels/backspacing/widths would be in their future

I am gonna have to agree with this, that is a nasty gash, but If you do buy them I would rebarrel them like KFJ stated.

Well, it is just the one wheel that has the bruises. The other three look fine. I can have a lot more patience looking for one old wheel than I can looking for four.

is it that easy to get new barrels for them stateside?

Yes. There are quite a few manufacturers of spun shells. A couple in Canada, too. Kodiak, VRwheels, tunershop, just to name a few.

Got this from Kodiak:

We are no longer producing aftermarket replacement shells including BBS RS and RM wheels.

I honestly do not see much rebarreling going on for 15" wheels. I've seen a lot of talk but little in the way of real results. BBS seems to have some options. Maybe some of the bigger wheels have options. I see steel wheels being rebarreled and I see width or lip being added to the back of regular wheels. Refinishing, however, seems to be thriving.

My idea is to actually barrel swap if needed. We'll see if it works.

just checked and it would be cheaper to get the wheels in the size I want from Japan with 4x114 PCD and change the centers

George, there is a guy in Poland that does a lot of this sort of work. I also see a few others in eastern Europe doing it too. They sell them on a few BMW forums I visit from time to time.

George

I tried to look up anyone doing this in europe but couldn't find anyone... I'll have to try harder. Thanks for the advice!

EDIT: oh btw as far as I remember, RS8s are two piece so you can't change just the outer lip

Dandy

They are two piece (removeable face from a single welded barrel), correct.

I may be mistaken, but you can convert 2 pc to 3 pc. Besides the guy in Poland, there is a shop in New Jersey converting 1 pc wheels to 3. There was a set of BMW "bottlecap" wheels that were converted recently, caused a LOT of tongue wagging in the e30 world.

Yes, I was blown away, too. I have many questions about them, but I have to admit, the results are stunning! I wondered how stock NA daisies might look done the same way as 3piece 15s. :)

that's pretty impressive! I know I could have the weld between the outer and inner lip ground of, but I'd not do that... I'll get in touch with this guy to see how much would it be to widen my set. Thanks again
