View Full Version : I'm stuck on what color to paint my car and would like your thoughts

Looking for input on what color to paint my car. The car is a daily driver but set up for the track and with an uncorked V8, large flairs and large nickle 5 spoke wheels there is nothing subtle about it. Right now it is black with copper bronze stripes. These shots are with the old wheels and no flares.

These are the new wheels.

I have narrowed it down to 3 color options.

1 Matte Black with semi gloss stripes. Like this but not so shiny of stripes

The stripe contrast would be more like this

2 Sun burnt copper pearl with pearl white stripes. Sorry no good examples here but this is the color.

That copper color might look better with a ghost stripe or maybe silver or off white rather than such a bright white as that pearl.

3 Dark blue with silver stripes.

I love them all but they are all so different. Matte black would be wicked, burnt copper crazy different and blue sort of normal. So what do you think?

I'd go with the orange color and a matching engine cover. Bit fat meatballs in white on the doors with V8 written in them. Go crazy man, have fun with it.

You already have attention with the loud V8. Do you want to class it up or keep it screaming?

Classy colors are blue and white
Attention colors are the orange and matte stuff

^^ That is exactly the problem. Which direction to go.

Matte black = Don't even think about it I take no prisoners. Appealing because the look would fit the sound and it is a hot rod in many ways so the hot rod matte look works.

Copper = I'm mean but approachable so let's see what you got. Appealing because at it's core it is a muscle car and bold colors and graphics are what muscle cars are all about.

Blue = I'm all grown up and probably won't waste my time. Appealing because as odd as this sounds my goal really is not look at me and with the classy look my wife would probably ride with me more.

The thing I really want is when I park out at the end of the row at walmart I want it so cool that when I walk up to it I can't take my eyes off it. I'm stuck because I think all 3 looks would do that and in their own way all 3 looks fit the personality of the car.

What I know for sure I do not want is red or cute.

My vote is the sunburnt copper color.. always loved that.. saw a 90 miata painted like that at SEMA and it was gorgeous!

As funny as it may seem... you're giving the answer yourself. You seem like a slaughtering-kinda type. Be dark, be matte, be the dark shim they thought they saw in their mirror, but ended up in front of them... eating them. :ninja::slayer:

Those photos don't do it any justice compared to how it would look in the sun.

After recently painting my Miata Laguna Seca Blue, I wouldn't have any other color. Super loud compared to my usual choice of white and grey metallic, but my god does it look good in the sun and in person.

I feel like matte/flat/satin looks better on older cars. I've also gotten to a point where I see matte/flat/satin cars as incomplete. I vote for that copper color. Let the car look as loud as it's engine sounds.

I think based on what you guys said and wife I need to drop the flat black. It's perfect for a 55 chevy and a lot of other cars but just kind of weird on a Miata. My son says don't try to make it something it's not and it's a fun sports car so need to be true to that.

I looked through all the color chips again tonight and there are so many great colors that would be cool but still like the blue and the copper best. So now it's just a matter of play it safe with blue which will be timeless or be a bit more daring probably get tired of the copper in a few years. I wish you could see that copper chip the photos above don't even come close to how cool it is.

I sure appreciate all your thoughts on this. It has been very helpful!

+1 for blue.

On NA's the metallic and mica colors were mainly blues and greens and darker colors.
That Cobra color will look OEM+.

The orange mica will make the car much more obviously custom.
With the scoops and flares and the orange it may evoke a kind of 'Corvette Summer' look, which I'm not so fond of.
Light, bright colors work best on a Miatas in solid or non metallics. This will make the car look race
A subtle pale metallic would be cool though.

Please also consider other darker mica colors with the silver stripes, such as maybe your original stripe color or maybe candy apple red.

Satin black on a nineties car will look 'ghetto' to most people, however good the finish is.

Just my opinions.

^^ truth to be told when I saw the shots you took of your car on the beach I took a serious look at yellow and white stripes! Your car is EPIC in every way. Love the black chrome wheels, love the color, the top everything.

Corvette summer is one scary thought! This color is way more burnt copper than orange though. Really not orange or red at all. It lays kind of like the stripe color on the car now but less green and much better.

Thing about red is I have owned and loved 4 red cars and at any autox or event half the cars there are red so I really don't want red.

I have owned and loved one dark blue car which is my donor for the Miata.

I loved that dark blue color for sure and it would make sense to paint it that color as a tip of the hat to the Camaro like I did the hood scoop. Blue is just so average and safe though...

I have considered non metallics but they seem kind of blah for a modern car.

Much to think about thank you.

I may have been a bit hard on the copper color. After writing my last post I googled the color but It is hard to tell what it's like, looking at speedshapes on the internet. If it's dark enough it may look awesome, but it's a more risky color than the blue. Maybe take my opinions with a grain of salt.

Wow that is ^^ much closer to what the paint chip looks like. The chip is darker than the shapes I posted but it's so hard to tell what it will look like in chips and photos.

I drove all over town today looking at car lots trying find a car that was close to the chip on the card and could not find anything. It's so weird because it is not orange, not red, not gold, not burgundy, not brown not like anything out there. Kind of makes me wonder if there are no cars this color because it's so nasty no one wants it...

Wife thinks silver stripes not white with either the copper or blue and I think she is right on that.

I find the thing is, that there are countless shades within any one color. I think blue is a perfect example, from deep royal, to electric, to baby, they all elicit different feelings. That being said, think of Baby Blue, you might not see it as a car color, but, then think of the Gulf themed race cars of the 60's/70's.

My pick is a Kandy Kolor, like the Redline Hotwheels of the late 60's.

I am going to tell you to think about the colors that best suit your personality and preference with the shape of the car in mind. It is a reflection of who you are and how you wish people to perceive you, so maybe take a step back and look at some of your favorite possessions; clothing, personal electronics, shoes, whatever.

Consider how those items evoke a certain response everytime you look at it or compliments others have offered when they saw it. Consider your personality, ask those closest to you how they perceive and like about you. It sounds corny, but it will help you associate with a color you may not have looked at.

Personally, I like to stay with solid colors, usually more towards the cooler( temperature-wise) or neutrals (silver, grey, white, black). I like the simplicity of the shape to speak for itself. If I chose a metallic, the shape has to have the form that allows the metal flakes to pop the highlights and accentuate the shadow pools. That is just my preference, though. Simple, understated, timeless. I also try to think about how a color will age, making the choice seem dated in a relatively short time. I also try to avoid colors that aren't flashy, but maybe unique in a classic way.

In the long run, you have to live with it long term. A bright, blaring color may make people stare, but sometimes you just want get a cup of coffee and enjoy a drive without drawing everyone's attention...that's what the V8 rumble is for. :)

Hard to see here but there is a point in the mid to dark section of the fade that is really close to the copper color. No wonder I like that copper color I love that drumset and it reminds me of lots of good times!

You are also spot on that the grays and charcoals are timeless and always easy on the eye. I agree on the flashy cars attention thing. I have had a couple of cars that were very flashy and it could take a half hour to get gas because it drew so much attention. Problem is I want it to be so cool I can't take my eyes off it but that just draws a crowd when I don't want it to...

Not too worried about the color being dated. Odds of it lasting more than 5 years before it is painted again or some other major renovation are slim.

Very helpful post thank you. Back to the paint chips again!...

It's a good looking color but I learned something along the way. There was at least one car in each lot that either my wife or I said wow that is a great color and everything that wowed us was either deep to dark blue or burgundy to maroon. Nothing in the copper / gold family ever wowed us.

So now I am thinking the blue with silver stripes is the way to go. This is the color I'm thinking.

The other thought I had was staying with gloss black and doing gold stripes.

The black might look a little more mean but the blue is a great color. Thoughts?

As a stripe color, consider a champagne gold, like on this Gran Turismo Mazda Furai

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v258/Exotic118/Gran%20Turismo%205/MazdaFurai.jpg

It would tone down the Sun Burnt Copper a bit and tie in better with the interior than silver.
I think champagne would be nice with the dark blue too.
Not so on black, where the stronger gold as on the examples you posted, looks better

Black will be easy to repair.

The orange is Prowler Orange on PPG 9700 Black.

I had already planned to do my wifes '92, 9700 with (vette) Atomic Orange R pack stripes.
I already have the paint but not the time to get it done ;)

Hey there ^^ is a combo I had not thought of. That is pretty sweet and that thing is killer with the wheels and bar the same color! You do very nice work!

Humm I wonder what that copper would look like as stripes on black. Damn too many options!!!

Funny you mention that! Black and champagne was also on my radar but I had not thought about it against the copper or blue... but that is a great idea for sure.

I showed my wife the shots of your white stripes on yellow tonight and she and my daughter both liked it a lot. This may just come down to spinning a bottle!

This just might be the ticket. Going black saves painting the jambs and if I use the copper for the stripes I still get the unique copper color I like with out it being way too much of a good thing.

Hard to picture what this would look like because in normal light it's not so orange. Wow it's hard to take photos of pearl paint!

I really appreciate that prowler orange on black shot Rogue, it opened up a whole new world for me!!

I still like the blue with silver. If you are keeping your wheels in the nickel finish then I think that would be a killer combo with a nod to the Camaro past. A retro style stainless steel gas lid would be a nice finishing touch.

Your welcome, it sure gets a lot of positive attention.
Fitting for something with that V8 rumble.

Nice! Rogue how much paint did it take to do your Miata? ^^

Dunno, I buy 9700 by the gallon….
All the Brilliant Black Miata's I paint get 9700. (unless customer wants to keep PZ)
It is pure black, not the typical Mazda color with 2 drops of white that makes it creamy.
When you see 9700 next to a PZ is certainly noticeable, but alone just looks super nice stock.

Well I landed on a paint color but not by choice by iffy body work. My flares look great in primer but I doubt I can get them good enough for black and I know I am going to have cracks sooner or later in the body work. So I have decided to go with white because that hides a world of problems. Then to add distraction to it blue stripes front to back and red GS stripes on the drivers front and pass rear fenders.

I really think this paint combo will make any blemishes in the body work less noticeable.

I think the flares and big wheels on my car will help but I can't figure out why it dosn't look as good on a Miata as it does on a Cobra.
