View Full Version : The Lightweight Wheel Thread (≤13.5 lbs)

I'm looking for new wheels for my Miata for the summer and thought it would be nice to have a thread for functional, lightweight wheels for road and track.
I'm looking for "normal" offsets that doesn't take a lot of work to fit (and maybe even for me to use here in Norway )

The usual suspects (from Good-Win).

http://www.good-win-racing.com/miata/images/items/KONIG-WIDEOPEN-SILVER-RIMS-WHEELS-15x8-+20-4x100Miata.jpg

Konig 15x8 WIDEOPEN - $99.95
+20 offset
13.6 lbs

6UL 15x7.5 - $149.00
+42 offset
11.5 lbs

http://www.good-win-racing.com/miata/images/items/Enkei%20Racing%20RPF1.jpg

ENKEI RP-F1 - $179.00
15x7
+35 offset
9.8 lbs

http://www.good-win-racing.com/miata/images/items/Team_Dynamics_Pro_1.2_Silver.jpg

Team Dynamics Silver Pro Race 1.3 - $129.00
15x7
+25 offset
13 lbs

http://www.good-win-racing.com/miata/images/items/konigbl.jpg

Konig "BRITE-LITE" - $89.00
15x6.5
+38 offset
12 lbs

So, do you have any? Maybe some hidden treasures? What about discontinued wheels? Or pure racing wheels?

There's always the OEM option from Mazda:
Standard NB or even NB Phoenix Enkeis are well below that weight.

Id be looking at the Enkei RPf1 14x7 +19 or +28. At 8.6 pounds, best choice for lightweight and being functional.

ATS Cup LE
it's the forged limited edition of the normal Cups.
they only came in 7x15" ET38
but they are just about 12lbs heavy (light)

http://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_images/3/2788/1801/31968400086_large.jpg
http://h8.abload.de/img/felgesauberzn4596.jpg

they do look almost the same as the normal ones, but when you compare both of the versions you'll see that the LE don't have that edge on the outside, and the dish isn't as deep as the normal ones that came in ET20 and ET25.

they are often on ebay.de

Wow.

8.5lbs rpf1 and a ~15lbs t1r = 24 lbs per corner.
Which is about 10lbs less than most 15" tire and wheel combos (~33lbs).

1994 m edition wheels. 14 x 6 & 10 to 10.5 lbs each. They were polished and clear coated from the factory. I had them powder coated and polished lip.

I would imagine a +23 is heavier since it's pretty much like adding an inch thick spacer, higher offset the part of the wheel that meets the hub would be smaller/thinner no?

That is assuming the face/barrel construction are the same i guess

ARGH. I hate you for posting this! Next season I'll be switching from my illegal 205/50/15 Z1s to 185/60/14 ZIIs. I was really hoping to not give up too much time as a result of switching to stock, lighter wheels. Fingers crossed you're not going to post that switching from blown, 100k factory original shocks to koni sports isn't going to help my times in a different thread...

Care to elaborate?
Like I said though, this is holding all else equal and the only part being different as the part of the wheel that meets the hub. If the difference between the two offsets is amount of lip or the concavity/convexity of the spokes then the higher offset may not be lighter

There's the D-Force LT5 that's a 15x7 right at 13 lbs. Available in 25 and 30mm offsets. Available at Vorshlag (http://www.vorshlag.com/product_info.php?cPath=123_126_151&products_id=480).

But if you're up for a challenge, this 15x10 Weld with a 6.25 backspacing weighs in at 12.15 lbs and barely peeks out from the stock fenders when set at zero camber.

I've seen prototype carbon wheels at PRI for the last 2 years. One company was doing a 16 inch version but in a 5 lug pattern. I asked them if they where going to look into making a 4x100 pattern and they said no.

Anyone ready to drop such heavy coin on wheels wouldn't balk at having hubs made for them, I suspect.

Traklite started out as a rep company and now they have some of their own products and I find this one interesting. It is spec'd VERY Miata friendly:

Traklite Gear

Exclusively manufactured using Flow Forming technology which it gives characteristics similar to those of a forged wheel. This permits a dramatic reduction in wheel weight while enhancing structural rigidity vs. a standard cast wheel.

Volk CE28N 14x5.5 +36 or +46 (6.39 lbs)

^not my car

Was just Google searching some wheel pics and this came up... it's MY car!

(or was... about 5-6 years ago)

A sub-24 pound wheel & tire package that still has 195mm of tread is a good thing on a lightweight Miata. I'm presently at another 25-pound wheel & tire package... but I did it with 10.8 pound hollowspokes and 14 pound 175/70 all-season tires. Just as light, but severely lacking in grip, feel and steering response! (but, amazingly "not bad" for street use once you get used to it)

Cool, good current info. I would do the 175's, but I just hate that theres not many sticky small tires. I just obtained some used hollows. 10.6lbs. And was planning a 22-24lbs combo. The other day I did the spares for a few miles and they did amazing on broken cement, was this your experience as well?
