Roby wasn't exactly sure what he wanted or what he was looking for. That is until one day as he was flipping through one of his Japanese magazines he saw the Nopro demo car. Right away a light switch went off in his head and he knew that this was the wide body kit that he wanted for his Miata. After doing more research and talking to his guys at RSpeed, Roby's dream was quickly crushed as he found out that the kit wasn't for sale and that it was just a prototype overseas. Most people would give up after hearing news like that, but not Roby. Roby demanded that the next kit made by Nopro be for his car. After going crazy for a couple months, Roby finally got his wish and demands answered. After waiting a couple months Roby had the only Nopro kit in the Country.

Next it came time for the installation process. With all things good, come a little bad here and there. Installing the new wide body kit wasn't going to be as easy as Roby and the guys thought. Since the US Miata and the Japanese Miata are slightly different, the kit would have to be customized to Roby's car. This slight set back was no problem for the crew at Dallas Collision. These guys were up to the task and were ready to show the Nopro body kit who's boss. Installing the kit wasn't the only problem. If Roby wanted the kit to work he would have to upgrade his Miata with 2001 projector beam headlights, the inner fender would have to be trimmed, and the side markers would have to be shaved. After six long months the process was finally complete and Roby had his wide body Miata.

There is no particular reason why we haven't featured a Miata in several years. We just haven't come across one that has totally blown us away. That was until we met Caleb Roby and his decked out wide body Miata. This car just screams for attention and it literally pulled us in as we were walking by it at the NOPI Nat's last fall. As you can tell Roby's Miata isn't your average Miata, as a matter of fact it's not your average import car. Roby told us that he purchased the car just over four years ago from his dad. He wanted to start a new project, and this car was the perfect candidate. Before Roby ever got his hands on the car, his dad had already installed a Hard Dog roll bar, a set of Eibach springs, an aftermarket exhaust system, and a set of TSW wheels. Roby was happy with what his dad had done to the car, but it didn't satisfy his craving in anyway. Roby's dad didn't get off to a bad start for what would one day become one of the most outrageously clean Miata's we have ever seen.

Roby told us that four years ago he would have never imagined the car to look the way that it does now. He also told us that when he was building his Miata he wanted to make sure that it looked mean and aggressive. He knew that peoples mentality was that the Miata was a "girly car" and he did everything in his power to make sure that his Miata wasn't "girly". This mindset helped him to build one of the meanest looking Miata's around.

After acquiring the Miata from his dad, Roby became involved with RSpeed, a local Miata specialist in his area. This was exactly what Roby and his Miata needed. After spending time with the crew at RSpeed and going over what they wanted to do with the car, they finally came up with the perfect game plan on how to turn the "girly Miata" into something unique. The first thing on the agenda was to add some extra power and boost. The crew at RSpeed installed a Jackson Racing supercharger, headers, and an upgraded timing control box. They also added a Split Fire coil on plug ignition set-up, and a custom intake for some extra power. For some extra bonus points Roby got himself a Japanese carbon fiber radiator cover.

With the Miata being a drop top, Roby knew that the interior of his ride had to be impressive. Once again he called upon the help of RSpeed. An IL Motorsports chrome dash kit is used to blind the driver and passenger as they sit comfortably in a set of ultra rare Bride Pro 2 racing seats, matched up with Bride sliders and rails. Roby wanted to add some more bling to the mix and got himself an AWD gauge cluster, which can be seen hiding behind the MOMO net steering wheel. A set of MOMO tuner pedals can also be found inside the Miata's cockpit. To enhance the audio in his ride, Roby installed an Alpine MP3/CD player.

Most guys and gals start building their projects from the outside inward, but not Roby. Roby wanted speed and interior style first, and once he was satisfied with what he had, it was time to deck out the body of his Miata. And boy oh boy did he go to town on the exterior of his ride. Roby knew that he wanted a Japanese style and feel to the exterior or his ride. Like most of us Roby wasn't exactly sure what he was looking for. At first he sourced out a Garage Vary front lip. Next he got a set of Japanese tail lights, which enhanced the rear of his car. He also added a BSP classic fuel lid. With the car changing right in front of his eyes, Roby decided to get rid of the TSW wheels that his dad had installed on the car. Out went the TSW wheels and on went a set of spark silver Volk GT-C wheels, matched up with Toyo rubber. Roby was pretty content with how the Miata looked at that point, but that didn't last very long. Just like every car addict, Roby wanted to take his Miata to that next step. The step we here at HCI like to call "insanity" occurred.

The old wheels that Roby's Miata was rocking were now way to skinny for the new fenders. Roby was once again in desperate need of wider wheels. Since the Miata uses a FWD offset and bolt pattern, finding the correct wide wheels was nearly impossible. Roby turned to a good friend of his from Main Stream Performance for a custom set of one-off wheels. After doing some serious research and taking measurements for the front and rear of the Miata, Roby and the crew came up with the perfect set of Forgeline wheels. The custom set of SX3R 3-piece Forgeline wheels made for Roby's Miata came in a gunmetal finish, and featured a polished lip. 18x10.5's in the front matched up with Falken 245/35/ZR18's and the rears are matched up to a set of 285/30/ZR18. The cars center of gravity is brought down via a set of Ground Control fully adjustable coilovers and Bilstein shocks.

Besides the Ground Control and Bilstein goodies, Roby wanted to make sure that his suspension components were all up to par. His Miata is also equipped with a set of Jackson Racing front and rear sway bars and supercharger stress bar.

After all this hard work and determination to build the meanest Miata around, we figured that Roby would be content for now. Boy oh boy were we wrong. Roby told us that in the near future he plans on upgrading his brakes with a big brake kit, and possibly doing a custom turbo kit. He also told us that he is always looking for cool Japanese parts, so some of those are for sure in the not to distant future. Roby wanted everyone to know that without the help of his father Steve, RSpeed, Main Stream Performance, Wheel Source, Dallas Collision, and all his friends that he would never have been able to turn his "girly Miata" into the wicked street machine that it is today!
